I've been shopping at this Fresh Market since it first opened years ago. Even though I usually visit the Willow Grove location, this one was closer, and I was craving something sweet. There desserts are good and you get a slice of cake for your birthday! This visit, I picked up a slice of chocolate cake, a personal apple pie, almond pillow cookies, and their sea salt & vinegar chips. Let me tell you those almond pillow cookies are soooo good! They were definitely the highlight of my trip. What I also love about Fresh Market is the value. I spent only about $22 for several treats and snacks that will last days. These days, you can easily spend $16-$20 or more on just one dessert at a restaurant, so this felt like a great deal. The staff has always been friendly, welcoming, and knowledgeable whenever I've shopped here. The store is well stocked, clean, and there's a convenient private parking lot, which makes stopping in easy. One of my favorite things about Fresh Market is their weekly meal deals. They often have family dinner specials that include an entrée, sides, and even dessert for a great price (I believe they're offered on Thursdays). They're definitely worth checking out. They're chicken salad used to be great but now it's over salted and and they use way too much pepper. Their egg salad tastes like pure mustard. It was almost inedible. I was embarrassed to serve these to my guests so I had to redo the chicken salad and just skipped the egg salad entirely cuz I didn't have time to do anything except throw it away. Their sandwiches are HALF Of the meat and cheese that they use at other fresh markets. It's like two slices of bread, one slice of meat, one slice of cheese. For $9 for God's sake. Sometimes the people the deli don't even look at you. If they're doing something. They know you're there. They know you need something. They could at least say "I'll be with you in a minute." read more

I live on the Hill and remember when they first opened. The prices are EXPENSIVE. The selection is limited to the most costly boutique brands. Spices like salt & pepper can go for $10. Vinegar averages $15. The have few sales. Some of the butchers can be rude. It is clean. I rarely shop there because I can't afford it or they don't have what I want like normal cat food. You don't go there for staples or basic supplies, its for gourmet cooking and upscale dining experiences. I prefer the co-op that can be expensive too and has less options because they are so small but they have better sales and more user friendly basic items on the cheap. We don't do our weekly shopping here. This place is like a fine restaurant only reserved for special occasions. Of course that's because of me and my spendthriftiness. I once left here with a $215 bill and my cart wasn't even full. So why then does this place still get 5 stars in my book? The food is so damn good. The selection is so damn big. They have an entire coffee bean section. Which is funny because if you've seen the joint it's not that large. Comparatively speaking. We've hosted a few in home parties and gotten their sandwich trays. These are so excellent. Like who raves about a sandwich tray?!? Order one for your next gathering. You'll get it. I can't leave without grabbing some premade sushi. Just can't. THE CHEESE SECTION. We got a ham for Christmas and didn't have to do anything but heat it up. It was amazing quality. Awkward encounter with what may be store manager. I came in at 8:30pm and she was standing outside the store. Told me "just so you know we close in 20 mins." Didn't even say hello. I said "I know." When I came outside quickly, I hung around to see if she said this to other people or just me. I counted at least 3 other guests (white men) who came into the store AFTER I did, as I type this from my car, and she didn't tell them "just so you know the store closes in 15 mins" and instead gave them friendly greetings. Super uncomfortable. I think this person may need sensitivity training - I would be curious to know how Black staff feel working in this store because I know I didn't feel great as a Black shopper! We are new to The Fresh Market and have bought their homemade chicken salad from the deli. I must say, their chicken salad is the absolute best we have ever had, including our own recipe. Mind you, it not fancy or gourmet in any way, but the favor is hands down the best! We have since bought the chicken salad many times and it never fails. Thank you, we will certainly give other items a try. As far as the service goes we have had a great experience with all levels of staff members. sorry to leave a bad review, the store is otherwise fine, but that overwhelming strong smell of rotting garbage this place has has got to be addressed. this is not a one time thing, i go here every now and then out of convenience and it smells this way every time. as soon as you walk in you are hit with a smell so nasty it's shocking that this is allowed for a grocery store. the back section of the store near the meat almost has me gagging. i fear that this is unsanitary. otherwise, food and service and all of that are fine lol read more

They have rotisserie chickens on sale for $6.00 on Thursdays. However, they are usually sold out. I got a rain check and I go by there on Saturdays. Sometimes on Saturdays, I can use the rain check. Oher times there are no chickens. It's not worth the trouble. read more

Great selections, ample parking, fresh baked goods, quality meat, cheese and sea food, everything you need, in a local store, plus customer service can be hard to come by in grocery stores in philadelphia, look no further for quality people and ingredients. I enjoy being able to have a friendly conversations with the clerks and anything I can't find someone is always available to answer quick questions, and even help you find what you need. You have to keep an eye out because things put in their displays are often marked incorrectly. 3. Today I called to see if they had a specific item. Perhaps my expectations were too high for this Fresh Market - quite frankly, I was disappointed with it. I had not shopped in one before, and was expecting a more high-end experience all around. For me, the Acme will remain the chain-store source for many routine product purchases, while the Weaver's Way Coop or even Whole Foods locations offer much more in terms of specialty and bulk food items. Yes, they do have convenient off-street, private lot parking. But if you have the option of driving, I'd wonder if you wouldn't choose another destination for food shopping. As I walked in the door of the impressively spacious market (just the opposite of the cramped Mt. Airy Weaver's Way), they were playing the Beethoven Op. 11 trio. And by the time I was half way through the store, it was the Archduke Trio. Okay, 5 stars for the classical Muzak. At the same time, however, their stone-like tiled floor is rough surface for a shopping cart, resulting in a lot of clatter. Was this a design oversight, or did they intend to deter shoppers from moving their shopping carts quickly through the wide aisles? The fresh greens and vegetables were limited in variety and quality. I thought the cheese selection as well lacked variety and depth. They also label many of the cheese/dairy items with a per package price, without a per pound label, so calculating per pound price is not so easy when the package is an odd size, such as 7 ounces. I found it frustrating to have to take the time to do the arithmetic in comparing the prices for various cheddar cheeses, when I wanted the cheapest one for my homemade mac n cheese. (Note: I did not attempt to compare specific prices with other markets, but I wasn't struck by pricing that seemed to be clearly a bargain.) And while I had read about how friendly the staff were, that welcoming spirit seemed to have worn off during the first week that the store was open. There were no friendly greetings from the employees. For now, I don't see much reason to go back, but perhaps this store will get better after it's been open a while. read more

For the most part this is a decent supermarket with a good selection of things including more specialty and gourmet items you can't always find at other markets. But there have been a couple of occasions where I've purchased items that were expired and had not been removed from the shelf (in particular the yogurt). However the lower rating is mostly due to the customer service I experienced. Chestnut Hill gives the feel is a small community. I grew up here and know that the shops and associates that work in them are typically friendly and engaging. That's what makes Fresh Market's customer service feel out of place. It seems that some of the cashiers don't know what truly good customer service is. On two separate occasions one cashier, I believe her name is India, didn't have the best attitude at checkout. She was on her phone right in front of me as if I wasn't even there. She also carelessly handled some glass kombucha bottles I was purchasing and but several heavy items in one bag. I had to interrupt her from her texting to ask if they could be double bagged. This really rubbed me the wrong way. As someone who's in customer service it's so important to try to be engaged during checkout with the customer. I get it we all want to check our phones. But for the short few minutes someone is purchasing their items you should be off your phone and doing your job. read more

Like most folks, I waited til last minute to grocery shop during this pandemonium. I found myself in this boujie neighborhood grocery store and could not be more grateful. The size of the store is basically the size of your average dollar tree and not gonna lie, the prices were too high for basic grocery needs but the actual choices were superb. Nothing off brand or cheap. Only the best of the best. There was still lots of fresh meat and poultry at the butchery on a Sunday afternoon during this quarantine. I was expecting crazy shoppers, but no the opposite actually. My first impression was they were playing classical and jazz music. A lovely environment. Small and fast lines too so I was in and out in 30mins. I'll definitely be back if there's another quarantine in the books. read more

This is a gourmet market. I often run here for the seafood lasagna that's housed in their refrigerator/ freezer section of the seafood dept. it is very good and comes in a ceramic baking dish. The market it's is ok staff is ok as well. I've never been asked by anyone if I need help. I often times have been wondering around looking for an item to no avail. It is clean inside and they often have things that may not be found in your traditional markets. It's in my neighborhood other than that I wouldn't go out of my way. While I am a big fan of Whole Foods, this place is great when you need a few items and you want to be in and out of the market. Limes are never long and the produce is extremely fresh. Prices are somewhat reasonable but you certainly can't do your full grocery list shopping here. read more

This is one of the nicest Fresh Markets I've been in so I'm surprised by the bad reviews. The only reason I knocked off 1 star is because the employees working the floor were rude and dismissive on 3 occasions when I asked a question. I think management should try to correct this as the store itself is really nice! The seafood counter has a great selection and is very reasonably priced. I also thought the packaged goods and freezer section had decent sales going on and prices overall were reasonable. The parking lot is on the smaller side but did not present that big of an issue for us. Going after work around 5-6pm on a weekday could be crowded though. read more

I came here on a Sunday morning and it was pretty quiet. I was staying at someone's house and the host offered us almond cookies from here. In general I like this store, which is clean and spacious and usually the staff is friendly and pleasant. Today I had a not so good experience which lost them a star. I got an email yesterday promoting their new freshly made pretzel roll sandwiches. I went in on a miserable rainy day specifically to get one of those sandwiches. The staff at the deli counter had never heard of them. I asked him to see if he could find any info. He checked with the store manager who said they had made the sandwiches the day before and only had one left. Why promote something if you aren't going to have it? And "sitting in the deli case since yesterday" is not "freshly made." read more

I am surprised this place doesn't have better reviews. I have found the people to be very nice. The meat/seafood department is excellent. I live in nearby Mt. Airy and come here a lot to get meat to grill. We also frequently take advantage of the meal of the week which typically has an entrée, side, and desert for a very good price. They will have all the elements together and there is a recipe card you can pick up. The bakery is also very good. I agree with the commenters that the produce selection is pretty bad. This does not bother me, however, because we have a ton of good options for produce in the area. We have 2 weavers ways, A&N produce in Germantown, and Produce Junction in Glenside. For everything but produce I find myself coming to the fresh market a lot. I find the parking lot to be very convenient. With the layout of the store I can zip in and out very quickly. I have also never had to wait in a long line which I appreciate. read more

OK, "Fresh" Market---you gotta pay attention to sell-by dates. A couple of months ago I bought a frozen pizza that turned out to be about a month past its sell-by date. Today I bought a package of tortillas (La Tortilla Factory, Hand Made Style Corn Tortillas, White Corn, Street Taco Size) that expired 4 days ago. In both cases, I just happened to notice the date while opening the package. How many products have we all bought over the last several months that were on the shelves past their sell-by date? I haven't been impressed by this market anyway---now it's past MY expiration date. read more

The first Fresh Market in Philadelphia has opened this week in Chestnut Hill. It seems like most of Chestnut Hill has stopped in to take a look and of course do some food shopping....especially after the blizzard on the weekend. Like the other Fresh Markets I have been in, this is an extremely attractive store. The food exhibits are very well done....everything looks so fresh and new. The store is on the smallish side for a supermarket these days but it is of course much larger than a specialty food shop. Right now there are a lot of tasting stations throughout the store. I don't think most of these will continue after the grand opening weeks ... but they do add a friendly touch. There is one big drawback here and that is the prices. They are def very high. Maybe these prices will fit in perfectly with many shoppers from well-heeled Chestnut Hill ... but I can't see a lot of other people using this market for more than the occasional specialty item and continuing to do their regular grocery shopping elsewhere. read more

Extremely clean, great parking, friendly staff (gentleman at seafood counter was especially courteous and helpful). It may be a little pricier than your average supermarket chain store, however I appreciate the experience. I personally do not enjoy the chaos of large, chain markets. This one is perfectly sized, well stocked and organized.
