Ambiance is always so much fun but I was disappointed in the lack of and hardness of the home fries. Also had to ask wait person AND expediter for extra butter. This is definitely a touristy kitschy kind of place and I loved it. Decorated with a variety of retro themed items (such as old diner tables and tin ads), this place is definitely a favorite. The seating is a bit tight (and the design of our table made it a little awkward to sit at, but we made it work. I had the chicken cordon bleu Benedict and it was SO good. We had all originally planned to enjoy one of their signature mimosa flights, but when I saw the selection of Bloody Marys and didn't see a flight option, I lamented our loud and my server, said, "I can make that happen for you." This place was so good we went there twice out of the 5 days we were in Portland! Such a creative menu that there's something for everyone. Love the eclectic vibe inside! Collin was our waiter both times and he's amazing! Great with suggestions, friendly and timed it to keep up with our needs without driving us crazy. The hash was soooooo good. We got it in the Benny and as a side and could literally have just eaten alone it was that good! Best we've had! The berry waffle was amazing. If you can't find something delicious to eat at least you will be stimulated by the "art" at this funky chain. There are so very many choices and, good for us, many vegetarian/pescatarian options. Before we got there on a rainy day, the service was helpful to give a the notion to book a table which cut down on wait time outside on a wet and busy day. Then, our server Brandon was most cordial, enthusiastic and supportive with specific requests for food. This morning at around 10:30am, we went to The Friendly Toast on the advice of two friends that had been there. Looked like a cool little eclectic spot that was rumored to have great food. We walked in and were immediately seated...in the very back of the restaurant near the bathrooms with a great view of the kitchen. The restaurant was not full. There were several available tables in the nice sunny area in the front. I should have spoken up. My bad. We were eventually waited on. My son ordered the salmon sandwich, without the egg (food allergy). No problem, we were told. When we were served, the sandwich had the egg on it. Had to send it back and wait for a remake. The Friendly Toast is a trendy little brunch and bar restaurant in downtown Portsmouth. My parents and I were passing through on a weekday and stopped for brunch. The place was already packed when we got there and the atmosphere was very upbeat. The tables were tightly crammed together and it felt a little claustrophobic, but it seemed to work for the people dining there. The place was also lined with some really cool vintage art pieces. A lot of items from the 80s and 90s that brought back fond memories. One of my favorites was the hanging light that looked like a Kentucky fried chicken bucket. The food was pretty good overall. The coffee came extremely hot, which we love and I liked the presentation of my breakfast. I ordered the avocado toast and it was delicious. It was a little pricey for basically toast and avocado but I did like it. My parents stuck to their traditional over-medium eggs, toast, pancakes, bacon, and sausage. Their food came out lukewarm and some of it was cold. They had to send it back because it was just too cold to enjoy. It might seem nitpicky, but we do expect hot food if we're paying for it. The waitress was great and exchanged the food with two hot plates. The manager also apologized and made it right. I'm giving this review 4 stars. We shouldn't have to send our food back and I didn't love how close the tables were to each other. Other than that, the atmosphere was positive and the food ended up being pretty decent. This is basically an eclectic Cracker Barrel. Not bad if that is what you are looking for. Waitress was clearly scripted to push the "chef's test kitchen item of Buffalo Mac&Cheese" . The coaster with the QR code was a dead giveaway away that this is a more corporate endeavor. Basic made to order diner food. Pumpkin pancakes were quite tasty. Bacon was precooked and reheated. Eggs were unsalted. Potatoes were dry. Should have been sent back but we were making an in/out stop. Fine for bigger groups, looking to fill their bellies. I ordered one of my favorite go to meals, (chicken and waffles) and was thoroughly disappointed. There wasn't one good thing to say about it. The portion size was pathetic, 3 McDonalds chicken nuggets would be a good comparison. Then I'm paying $19 for chicken thigh meat as well?!? The waffles at the do it yourself continental breakfast are better, taste and texture. The new "hot honey" they used was the worst part, inedible. So much more, but overall, what a disappointment. The rest of my family had similar reactions with their dishes. Just didn't do it for me. The inside of this place is adorable, the location is excellent. It's central to downtown and there's cutesie lights and posters everywhere. Has a very Americana diner feel. We opted for this place on a Sunday morning hangover and came prepared to give grace knowing it would be busy. That being said they couldn't seat most of our party together despite there being 7 of us and saying we could wait or come back. They forgot several orders of sides. It seems like the quality of the food was based on what you ordered. The basic breakfast featured mixed berry jam that was little more than sugarless cold mashed fruit but then the breakfast burrito was delicious. The service was friendly enough although people running in between the tables in a cafeteria style spot can be a lot. If I had a family of four and no hangover I would love this spot. read more

We had a wonderful time here. We were regulars 25 years or so ago, and we were amazed and overjoyed to see one of our favorite servers from that time had returned and was waiting on our large party. They were so great at it and took really good care of us, unsurprisingly. It was impressive to watch them work. We loved looking at how the art has changed and stayed the same. It still has a great vibe, IMO. My kids loved coloring their neat-looking kids' menus. The food came quickly even though there were a lot of us. Everything we had was delicious and plentiful. Overall 4/5 This place used to be AMAZING but I think the quality has gone down a bit after the expansion and addition of many other locations. The service is still great and I love the imaginative and creative menu but I hope next time I dine here my food is warm. Food 3.5/5 Huevos Rancheros The best part about the dish is the chimichurri sauce. The home fries were alright but also cold. I wish the food didn't come cold and that the portions were larger. Breakfast Burrito This definitely wasn't bad flavor wise but it was also not warm. I wouldn't get it again. Service 4.5/5 When we arrived the host told us there was a 45 min to an hour wait and we put our names on a waitlist for 2. I got a text 10 minutes later that our table was ready. Our waiter was attentive and came right up to us. Ambiance 5/5 Quirky and fun is the name of the game for The Friendly Toast. You will find odds and ends and knick-knack all over the walls and hanging from the ceiling at this restaurant. The Chorizo Benny is excellent -- really flavorful, not too drenched in hollandaise, with home fries that were nice and moist (too often they're overdone and dry). Also enjoyed the Snap, Crackle, Cluck fried chicken sandwich (the waffle fries were cold, but our waitress cheerfully replaced them with fresh hot ones that were great). Coffee is really good here as well -- nice and toasty, no sourness. Service is great, with very friendly hosts and waitstaff. Atmosphere is vibrant -- it always seems crowded, and the decor is fun and whimsical.
