The Gathering Place has been open since 1936. I've been going for many many years but no longer live in Michigan. Apparently it is under new ownership but I couldn't tell a difference. It's a total dive but has amazing character. The staff is super friendly and attentive. The pizza here is amazing if you're a fan of Detroit style. I have never in my life had a bartender or waiter talk so rudely back to me how this lady did behind the bar. I was talking politely with my own family around the bar and she had the audacity to come up to me saying "I had an additude" which only proved the point that my girlfriend, who was renting out space for her party thought she was drinking behind the bar. She had long dark hair and was complaing about the fact there were only two of them. I wish I would have gotten her name but I will never be coming back due to her rudeness. This is my go to place for lunch when I come to Troy to work at the police and fire training center. They have never been overly busy and get me in, feed and out and all easily within an hour. The staff is always friendly and attentive. They have non alcohol beer for us non-drinkers and reasonable prices. read more

I know this is a bar and grill, I've been coming here for decades, but last night 4-29-25 I had a horrible experience, which is why I'm writing this review. I came in with my two kids for dinner at 6:00pm, which I have done a few times in the past, we order a pizza and bread and then the kids play the table top shuffle board, which the love to play. There were two guys and a woman sitting at the bar having a extremely loud conversation, screaming half the time and every other word was F this and F that, over and over again, with no care for anyone else around them. This went on for nearly an hour before they left, I even heard the blond bartender/waitress saying the F bomb loudly a few times, and she was serving us! They were all well aware I had my 12 & 9 year old having dinner 8 feet away from them, and couldn't give two shits. The staff did nothing about this, and was partaking in the foul conversation at times. Like I said, I know its a bar, but I've been in there many times when kids baseball teams or caterings like that come in for pizza after a game or other family's coming into enjoy the good pizza, and I believe you shouldn't have to endure this kind of behaver just because the serve alcohol. I know if I would of said something to them it would of turned into a fight, they were pretty lit, and I felt if I said something to the blond waitress who also dropped a few loud F bombs it wouldn't of done any good. I would of left but we already ordered a pizza and which took a half hour to come out, which would of been fine if my kids didn't have to hear the vulgar yelling the entire time. This place used to be a lot better with a good staff. I will not be back, kiss my hundred bucks I spend in there a month goodbye, and goodbye to the good things I used to tell people about that place:( read more

This place has obviously seen better days. TGP has been around foreverrr... but it's lost all of its charm and appeal. The first thing you notice upon entry is the smell. Ugh, it smells like a latrine...they use some sort of sanitizer (server told us about it) and the smell is like a toilet..like a urinal, it's so distracting. The tables are wiped with this sanitizer and leaves them filmy and sticky. I spilled some water on it table and it mixed with the sanitizer and made since weird residue form. I don't know - it just made everything feel really dirty and gross. I wouldn't have normally chosen this spot, but it was close for a client meeting. I've said this before, but this time it sticks, I will not be returning. I barely ate any of my food because it just felt really unclean in here. Unless there's an announcement that they're placing a huge overhaul and completely redoing this place - I'm out! read more

i used to go there pre Covid. today ordered a pizza "to go" in the car. Arrived early and ordered a beer. There is something wrong with the compression or the keg is old. it was FLAT. The Bar Tender brushed her hair right in front of the pass where ice is kept. When I arrived at home and the dough was raw. There were four tables in a restaurant that used to be full. This place is not at all what I expected. The interior looks like your standard neighborhood pub and was actually large. The service was kind of hit or miss but the food was a total bust in my opinion. The pizza would have been palatable had they not tampered with them. I ordered a small Hawaiian pizza with sauce on the bottom (WHY DO PLACES NOT PUT IT UNDERNEATH THE CHEESE?!) I told them that and they put more cheese on top of the pizza and REBAKED it!! So disgusting to have places mess with food like that and to have the toppings hidden under cheese. For apps we got seasoned fries and fried cheddar balls that were also disgusting. The oil was wayyyy too high and the outer layer of batter was burned and the inside was still frozen. Overall a complete bust in my opinion, especially if you're not here for the deals on drinks they have. read more

My favorite pizza in the area by far. I love Detroit style pizza, and this place does it very well. I honestly have not ordered anything but salad and pizza from this place. Salad was hit or miss in the past so we have just stuck with the pizza. Service can be a little spotty, we have had very excellent service there as well as we have been very disappointed with the service, however the visits with good service has outweighed the disappointing ones. read more

First of all, ALL waitresses should be trained in honesty! I accidentally tipped Kristi, over double what my bill was, and she never made me aware of my error. Believe me, I take FULL responsibility and I am totally embarrassed at what I did and I know how/why I made the mistake....but don't you think a waitress would alert you of this, I know I would make my customer aware of it!!! So STRIKE ONE! Something needs to be taken care of with the bathroom. It smelled like months & months of sewer back up in there, actually made me want to puke! So STRIKE TWO!! Went here tonight for the first time, after seeing the Globetrotters at the Palace. I actually live close by but rarely venture north into Troy. I was with three friends and each pair split a cheesy bread, it was very good. I also had an Angry Orchard cider ($3.50), my friends had some of the beers on tap. Service was a tiny bit slow, but very friendly, and I liked how they were able to put us all on different tabs. Apparently on Saturdays you can bring in ANY coupon from ANY restaurant and get 50% off their pizza, which is an awesome deal. They do other weekly specials too. I've been coming here for over 25 years. So, today when looking for a place to eat on Yelp, I was surprised by the low ratings and comments posted recently for this establishment. Since it was Saturday, I thought I would check it out, because traditional9ly they've offered a pizza deal of a large square pizza with 5 items for a little more than 1/2 off. It was early Saturday evening so the places pretty sparse of diners. Surprise the pizza deal not as great as in the past. Now the large is limited to only 2 items for $10.99 or small with 3 toppings for $6.99. Ordered the small with sausage, ham and green onions, also onion rings to munch on while pizza cooked. Perfect and large serving of rings for $3.99. Asked pizza to be sliced into 6 pieces. Rather than 4. When it arrived at my table, it looked good and didn't disappoint in taste. The Gathering Place has great pizza. It's deep dish style; very chewy and cheesy. I have not tried any other foods here, but they have the usual bar food. This place is more of a bar/pub; it is a great "gathering place" for softball teams as well as families. It has a sports theme to it. We've been back a time or two for eat-in pizza and takeout sandwiches and we were happy every time--everything was delish and our guests were thrilled. The only meh thing was that their Reuben comes with French dressing instead of Thousand Island which I just can't wrap my brain around but it was still really, really good. (If you were eating in, I'm sure you could ask for Thousand Island, but since we had takeout, I didn't think of it.) I'm amazed we didn't eat here more often, as it's walking distance from our house and we've never had that before...if we could do it over, we'd certainly eat here A LOT more often. read more

A small cozy windowless bar and family restaurant. Really good food and usually have specials on food in the weekend. They always have happy hour whenever I was there. The crowd is usually the locals who're very friendly. They usually have all the regular beers (millers bud light, etc) in draft and few craft beers also. Really good service worth every penny. I have been going to The Gathering Place for a few years now and it has been a positive experience. Nice small cozy place where meeting friends and family is nice. Normally locals are in attendance when I go however I do see a few unfamiliar faces here and there. Beer selection is nothing special, they have MI craft beers with the typical draft beers (miller, bud, Guinness, etc). Service was great. People there are very friendly and nice and wait time have been reasonable when ordering food / drinks. Food is nothing special. Typical bar food (wings, burgers, sandwich) however I did enjoy eating there. Overall, great place to meet friends and family to have a quick drink or dinner plans if you're in the area. read more

Fell off their stool a couple of times and were not asked to leave and only when they fell into another patron were they asked to leave. They were throwing around the f word. Our choir has been coming here for years after practice and we are always happy with the service, the food that we order, and of course the boomba specials on Tuesdays. Great atmosphere, and the cheesy bread is the best! Lots of cheese, perfectly made crust, and splash a little marinara on it....delish!! Kristi ( sp?) Our regular waitress is on top of her game....always ready as soon as we barely sit down with our drinks. I grew up in Troy, and for pizza there (were) was three pillars of pizza in Troy. Shields and The Gathering Place (TGP) for 'sauce on top' deep dish. As well as The Alibi for a traditional round. One of those pillars fell the other day and that pillar was TGP. I haven't been to TGP since it changed ownership months ago, but the other night when I went to TGP I could tell it was a shell of its former self. The pizza just wasn't the same, it was roughly room temperature when it arrived at my table and a bit burnt on the bottom. The service was, sub-optimal, I have had better there in the past. The only reason for me to go back is if someone demands we meet there. It is a shame too, since its within walking distance from my house. I can only hope that Green Lantern Pizza stakes a claim in Troy so we can once again have three pillars of pizza in Troy. read more

I can't believe I forgot to 'yelp' about this place when I went...here is your quick and basic rundown: Total Dive Bar......but with pretty effing good pizza! It's square, and just like Buddy's pizza at half the price and just as good. My side salad was large and was served with that perfect cool, watery ranch that all restaurants should have....and the breadstix!! Soft and large and garlicky-perfect. Regular typical bar food also available, but I don't see myself getting anything else but pizza here. Certainly not a place to get a pomegranate gray goose martini, but decent beer selection, cheap wine, but cheap prices. Now, would I go again? For sure. Is is worth more than a 20 minute drive for folks outside the area??? Not so much. I REALLY dig this place. My wife is always afraid of seeing Aholes she went to HS with (Troy Athens) but to no avail. Nice little hole in the wall with some really good pizza. Half off on Saturday, dine in only. (Nice!) Big TV's for whatever game you want. Good staff, puts up with my crazy-ass kids with no attitude when I know they should be beaten. Not a lot on tap but.....there is at least Labatts so I can't complain. Almost Detroit style pizza but a little bit lighter....we all love it. The only time I deviated from the pie was a chicken "breast" sandwich that was a pressed breaded nasty patty devoid of quality. A place for a date? Not really. Surprisingly though, this dark bar often has kids running about due to the smoke-free area and a couple of pinball machines. This is a great spot for pizza and bar food. The dive bar/homey atmosphere and abundance of big screens makes the perfect chill night out with friends, especially for guys who watch football. My friends and I like to go and play the shuffleboard (think air hockey without air). I enjoy the BLT pizza and the cheese bread the best! And, agree with Sarah M.B. -- the runny ranch is key. Another one bites the dust The wife and I been coming here for years, we originally went to the other Gathering place on Van Dyke ( now the Shelby Pub ) we always loved their Pizza, good service, well, today ( Saturday ) is 1/2 off pizza day when you bring in a competitors pizza coupon, I didn't want pizza but the wife did, so I thought she can get her pizza and I would ask for a separate check to use my Entertainment coupon " for Buy and menu item get a menu item " but when we got their the waitress said they wouldn't do that " why not ? I thought " if I came in by my self and someone else I didn't know came in to get the pizza deal and we sat next to each other then that wouldn't be a problem, I was very disappointed, so I decided to not eat, my wife ordered her pizza, we waited and when the pizza came it was soaked in sauce, like gross soaked and she said the pizza was cold, the wife decided she didn't want it and didn't want to wait for them to make another so we decided to just leave. with the cold over sauce soaked pizza and the " cant use the coupon " debacle, the wife and I are in search for another Pizza place hang out with out the hang ups. read more

I've always liked this place - it's an extremely comfortable place to be with great food. The staff is friendly and they make you feel like home. A true neighborhood staple, the Gathering Place has been around for decades and looks like they have quite an impressive local following. I mean, you gotta love a place with a marquis that says: "A and B Final Report Cards Get Free Pizza!" This is a small, cozy corner restaurant almost straight out of a movie! The walls are covered with years of historical photographs and awards. Trophies sit proudly in shelves. The dining room is open and friendly with the bar lining the left wall, shuffleboard and pinball games lining the others. You can almost imagine the regulars calling each other's names when they walk through the the door! The food is authentic and tasty. We tried the deep dish pizza... Out if this world! It had a crunchy thick crust and was loaded with cheese and toppings. (The small size can easily be shared.) The wings were absolutely fantastic: crispy with an amazing spicy sauce. The quesadilla was huge and delicious, cheese oozing from the sides. We tried the French dip and didn't care for it, actually. Too much bun, not enough beef, and the broth was weak. But they are apparently known for their burgers, so we'll try that next time. The Gathering offers a full bar with different specials during the week. We had margaritas and they were pretty good. The servers were friendly and delightfully honest. You won't find any polished up-selling here. They tell it like it is.
