Gather up your friends and head on down to the Gathering Place - I'm not a spokesperson for their restaurant, I just happen to really like the Gathering Place. I've been coming here for as long as I can remember. It's right around the corner from my home. Although the outside can look pretty sketchy at times, the inside provides a great atmosphere. This place is family owned, and the severs are really friendly. The bar area is nice, but there is also a dining room separated from the bar if you want to avoid that. Their seasoned fries are really good and I think they have the best deep-dish Detroit style pizza around (if Buddy's fell off the face of the earth)! Just moved to Troy and this place is the closest watering hole to my new place. Went there with a buddy. Nice atmosphere and posted up at the bar. Waitresses were attentive and served us right away. My significant beef with this place is that I ordered a Red Bull and Vodka. I received a fowl tasting beverage that was NOT even close to a Red Bull and Vodka. I asked the waitress if the drink was Red Bull because it tasted like poo and the waitress smiled and said, "no it is a fake, it is Red Baron, no one has ever noticed before." Then she walked away. Fail. How are you going to serve me a Red Baron and not tell me it is a Red Baron?!?! The bill said Red Bull when we paid. Uuuuummmmmmm no. read more

What can I say? It's the Gathering Place, also known as The GP to anyone who grew up in the Troy area. If you came of age around there, it's where you, um, well gathered, with friends. It's kind of a dump, dark and dingy, but the waitstaff makes a point of knowing who you are if you come back more than once. And whoa, the pizza! The pizza is fantastic. Deep dish with just the right amount of crunchy edges and gooey soft crust. The sauce is great with a hint of spice and the cheese is always the good greasy kind. I love balancing out the salty goodness with a quick dip in ranch. I also really enjoy the antipasti salad. Good amount of meats and cheese with a good tart dressing. My husband spent much of his misbegotten youth hanging out here and introduced me to it, along with his friends. The first night anyone arrives from out of town, a text goes out to one and all GP 9PM Be there. We've tried for years to find GP quality pizza in Texas and California with very little success. It's a must go place when we come back. It used to reek of cigarettes as it is truly a neighborhood bar but is much more enjoyable now that Michigan is a no smoking state. There's still an odor of stale ashtray but you really only notice it when you walk in. I suppose you can take kids, but I wouldn't in the evening. It's a bar, not a pizza parlor. read more

The Gathering Place is a great little dive bar to get an 8 square Detroit deep dish pizza. I have been going here since I was 10 years old and sadly the pizza has gone from GREAT to simply GOOD. I'm not sure if the cooks have changed their formulaic method to making the pies but the last couple of times I have been there, the pizza sauce was lacking, cheese applied sparingly, and the bottom of the pizza was a bit burnt. Either way, Gathering Place is definitely a spot to check out. I just hope the cooks start to consistently turn out quality pizzas, as they have in the past. read more

Our first visit here. It is a shot and beer bar atmosphere and full of locals. The service was great and the staff were all very pleasant. Unique potato skins: deep fried. But very tasty. Cheddar cheese balls: Very good, not greasy. Not anything special. Typical. Burger was HUGE with a bakery style bun. Not greasy. Very good. Salad was a disappointment. Chopped iceberg covered with sliced mushrooms, grates mozzarella cheese and croutons. Not even any olives. Lettuce was browned. Would not order a salad again. I could make that for $2 at home. I don't mind paying for a salad but it better be super fresh and unique. The pizza others were getting looked great. The prices were very low, maybe that is why most of the food was typical of a shot and beer bar. I'd go here again for a quick burger and beer. Today wasn't our first time here, but probably our last. We sat down at 4 PM on a Saturday. We sat awhile with no server, then a vulgar, nearly violent fight broke out and went on for a long time, to the point, my father was calling the police from our table. When we finally got a server, she informed us that they were regulars and that this wasn't this first fight???? We've been to this bar and grill for about 10 years. Almost always a good experience. The regular waitresses remember us and are super friendly. Deep dish pizza is very good and like the weekend deal with large pizza and antipasto salad and a pitcher of pop or beer. When they're busy it's slow service and hard to get a table. If I could give this place zero stars, I would. I have been frequenting this establishment for years. I used to love coming here, as the food was good and the waitstaff were so polite and helpful! Those days are gone and have been, for going on about a year, now. My co-workers/friends used to often go here on Friday evening. We won't step foot inside this place now. I actually had a waitress that was flipping her hair around our food, constantly...she had a lot of hair...it was disgusting. The food orders are ALWAYS wrong now and it takes forever to get your food. Beware: They make constant mistakes on the food bill too. I have heard that they are under new ownership. The 2 of us ordered an antipasto salad for 2-4 people and received a bowl of 80% old iceberg lettuce, sprinkled mozzarella cheese, 1 slice of tomato, black olives, yellow sliced pepper and a few squares of meat . The dressing of oil and vinegar wouldn't mix together???? We ordered a deluxe pizza with 5 toppings. The pizza was topped with something other than mozzarella cheese, maybe a processed cheese food??? To top that off the don't have spatulas or pizza stands to serve the pizza. Waitress acknowledged that everyone always asked for them but they don't have any. Meh, this place just didn't do it for me. Sure, they have lots of specials on pizza, salad, and beers. But it's not the best pizza, the salad is full of crappy iceberg lettuce, and the beer is cheap macrobrew. Went to The Gathering Place on a Thursday night around 11:45pm, and since it was going to close around 1am, there were only 10-12 patrons there. This is a cozy Troy hangout. When you go at night, it truly feels like hanging out in your best friend from High School's "cool basement" or something. There are a few arcades and games, the carpeting and interior is just all really cozy - like as if you're in a big den. It really is a "Gathering Place" for a lot of Troy locals. I am sure tons of former Troy Athens alumni that are still in the area frequent this place - like how Troy High people go to Joe Kool's a lot. Being as it was close to midnight - the fryer and grill were shut down. No problem - the oven was all that was needed to try some of their hometown favorite pizza. For $15.99, we got a specialty large square (8 slices) deep dish, Detroit style with a choice of 5-toppings. We chose pepperoni, ham, sausage, green peppers, and onions. While the price was a tad steep, the pizza was baked to perfection and ended up being worth every penny. There was plenty of cheese on the pizza - and the pepperonis were nestled under the cheese and sauce - which was the classic approach (similar to Detroit's famous Buddy's Pizza, home of the original square deep-dish). I liked how the cheese and toppings were not overbaked - and thus tasted a more dairy-creamy. The toppings still tasted meaty - rather than toasty. This was a sign of confidence in using higher quality ingredients, because I feel you need to be using good cheese to be able to underbake it a tad. The cheese and topping were top notch, as was the sauce. I really recommend the pizza here. Also on Thursday night we got a 60 oz. pitcher for $5.95 (and I was very impressed that Killian's draft was an option too!). At about $22 before tip, enough pizza for 2 hungry adults and enough beer to wash it down on a Thursday night - I was pretty happy. While pizza pricing is a little steep - it is truly great pizza with excellent taste, quality, and presentation. The bar here is very cozy, and our waitress was very nice - a hometown girl-next-door type. Between the good pizza, friendly staff, and cozy basement type interior - I highly recommend this place and it does live up to it's name "The Gathering Place." read more

We live less than a mile from GP and have given them 4 chances and they've blown it each and every time. They've gotten our order wrong, given our pizza to another table (so we had to wait for them to make another one), taken an eternity to get our food out, forgotten things we've asked for, you name it. The Gathering Place is a good place for a drink and pizza. It's a local joint with decent food and a relatively quiet environment. It's a dive, but it's a good dive. I went for dinner on Saturday night with three others, walked in and it's a seat yourself type of place. They have half off pizza on Saturday night with a coupon, however it has to be a printed out coupon. We tried to use a digital coupon on my smart phone, but the waitress said they don't accept that. Anyways, our large bacon and onion pie had about three quarters of the toppings on only one quarter of the pizza. It wasn't that great, needless to say. Antipasto salad is also just ok. I know this place has been here forever, as I grew up less than a mile away. For my money, I'd rather go to The Alibi or Loui's any day. Very nice family are, great food. Our waitress was in probably the worst that we've ever had at a restaurant !!!! We complained to the management after requesting her to come to the table 2 times she finally showed up and told us we had a bad attitude. This is absolutely the worst service we've ever received anywhere. I would like to get ahold of the owner to tell him what a lousy staff he has working there. I live close to this place and would visit more often if they improved a few things. First, the tap beer is flat. They need to get this figured out. It has been this way for years. I do like that they are offering more beers on tap nowadays, however the beer needs way more fizz. I would also like to see them add heat to the bathrooms. Both men's and ladies bathrooms are freezing in the winter. Please Install an electric wall heater or some form of supplement heat for these spaces. It's a small price to pay for your patrons comfort. In general their food is fine. I would like to see round pizza offered in addition to the square and I would also suggest they improve their salads with better quality lettuce and veggies. I do like this place. It has potential. I love their pizza. Often when I hit Detroit I will grab a friend or Family member and get some of this yummy pan pizza. This is a bar with a decent pub menu. I have had nothing but the pizza and a few basic appetizers (cheddar balls, fries, ect.) and every thing is at the bar type place standard. You can go their late night or for lunch. Families are welcome earlier in the night as well. I must have gone on a bad day because my experience with their pizza was less than stellar. The pizza took forever to arrive and they weren't even busy. Then when it came, the cheese was like plastic on top of the pizza. It was hardly edible and even though I never send things back, I had to this time. A bizarre experience here. Good food, had a nice time. Wanted to play pinball, put a massive 50c in the machine only to find it wasn't working, even though it was plugged in and all the lights were working. Asked the waitress and the manager for my money back out of principle but they wouldn't because "they don't own the pinball machine". A quick apology would have been fine but for some reason they didn't even apologize. Why bother going here again if they are prepared to lose a customer over 50c? read more

Ordered a peperoni pizza in Bad Axe store Labor day week end. Bar was a mess I hade to move dishes out of the way to have counter space, had to ask the bar tender to clean the bar. Had a beer and ordered a pizza to go, it took 45 minutes to get it. Tried to eat in our room next door, but it was raw, not properly baked, called them back but they were closed. Called the next day to talk to the manager, she said that I had too much on the pizza for it to bake properly. I told her I have been going to the Troy store for years as my office was close by and our office ate and drank in the Troy store daily. She said she would replace the pizza, so I got one to go to eat on the way home. It was the same as the first one raw and did not have 100% pure cheese on it. Something fundamental has changed. Been going to the Gathering Place periodically since the 70s. Always had excellent pizza and REALLY good antipasto salad. It has been several years since our last visit (they're not really close to us) and all I can say is something basic has changed there. The pizza was a gummy, underdone, mess with too much cheese very little sauce and .....let's just say it was bad and in only one way resembled what we had experienced there, consistently, for all those past years, it was square. The salad was, similarly, unrecognizable as something we had previously enjoyed at THGP. My guess is that ownership changed since our last visit. The pizza and salad were so unlike THGP that there isn't any way I can even write this off as a one time bad experience. To top it off, the service was bad. Bottom line, we will not go back. Based on the crowd there, or should I say, lack thereof on a Friday might, I think THGP is on a downward spiral that will end in closure. We're extremely sorry that this is the case but, frankly, things have changed so much that this is simply no longer the Gathering Place we have known for decades. read more
