Perfect in every way! I love this place. The bagels are the best I have ever had and the staff and ambiance are outstanding.

We got here about 8:45am on a Friday and the place was packed - we thought this was a great sign! However, we soon learned that this was due to the poor layout of the service counter. People ordering, picking up, getting water, and putting creamer/sugar/etc in their coffees were all congregated at the same place inside the premises right inside the front door! I was bumped into by at least 3 people. A very ineffective use of the otherwise large space that causes everyone to crowd each other. We ordered an everything bagel with maple bacon schmear and a sausage egg and cheese breakfast sandwich on everything bagel, with 2 cold brews. The bagels themselves were good, slightly chewy, but clearly freshly made. There was far too much schmear on the bagel and it was unbalanced. There were 2 sausage patties on the sandwich which also unbalanced it, and they used American cheese which was a dubious choice given the availability of far superior cheeses. Furthermore, we ordered dine in, and the bagel and schmear came in a to-go package with a plastic lid (as did each order of this type that we could observe in the premises) which is a massive waste of plastic. A positive is that both portions were generously large. The cold brew was solid. We are visiting from out of town and staying down the street, and would probably skip this next time we are in town. There appear to be other breakfast and coffee places nearby catered to a less trendy crowd that we would try instead. read more

I've been here a few times now and this is a solid place to get a bagel in Portsmouth. Bagels are large and super fresh, and the schmears are tasty and prepared in house. There is always a line, so be prepared to wait to place and pick up your order. Inside seating is nice, but the outdoor patio is even nicer. Limited space in the parking lot, but there is plenty of street parking around as well. A little more pricey than I would like - one bagel with a schmear and an iced mocha came to $14, but still a good place. read more

4.5 stars, here's why. The ambiance is wonderful. There's plenty of indoor and outdoor seating. Tables are wide and spaced well. While it can be crowded, turnover is quick save the wannabe poet or unemployed hipster nursing their cold coffee and typing on their Mac for 2 hours. We arrived at 9:30 and all bagels were sold out except rosemary. I had a schmear of scallion cream cheese and, in all honesty, it was excellent. The mocha latte was also superb. Some folks, especially from New York, will be shocked as to how stingy this place is with cream cheese, especially for the price. If you're on a budget, get a bunch of bagels and a side of schmear, and share. The patio area is huge and very welcoming to people and dogs too. I love that they turned an old gas station into a bagel spot! Pictures of Getty Bagels had me so intrigued and I was hoping they'd have the same texture as Scratch Bagels in Portland, but sadly they are a lil different and just okay. Would I say two bagels with smear is worth $14? Absolutely not. But it's a cute spot for a morning out, and the patio is dog friendly. Def recommend getting a side of swear as you'll get more bang for buck than having them put it in the bagel. They have a lil parking lot to the side, or there's 2 hr parking along the street. read more

Fast service, relaxed modern vibes. One bagel with two cream cheeses (I'm indecisive!) was just over ten bucks. The jalapeno cheddar bagel was above average, chewy and crispy and light. The miso schmear was salty, full of umami and creamy - it would have paired well with an everything bagel. The chili crisp with scallions was fantastic. A fun, no-cash bagel shop. The ambiance is good, it's a large place. The bagels are good but pricy. My jalapeño cheddar was delicious and chili hot! The bagels are tasty and fresh. Four stars for what is arguably the best bagel in Portsmouth. The prices are reasonable, there's plenty of seating, and this is a great addition to Islington. The bagels are solid with good texture and chew. Just know that all the "flavors" use the same base dough, with toppings added rather than the ingredients mixed in. Personally, I'd love to see the cinnamon or jalapeño cheddar bagels actually incorporate those flavors into the dough, it would elevate them significantly. The numerous cream cheese options they offer to make up for this are decent. For the average New Englander these might be mind-blowing enough to wait in a line for, but I prob won't be coming back until the hype dies down. read more

I don't often review but after stopping at The Getty yesterday and then looking at some of the reviews from a month ago I felt the need to counter some of the bad reviews. It seems that this place had just recently opened and they had some kinks to work out with food and service. It also seems that some of the posters went off about things that really had nothing to do with the food or the service. So here is what we found and it appears most of the recent reviewers have also discovered. We happened to drive by and saw lines out the door. It was right down the street from where we were staying so we took a quick walk up the street to check it out. Love when people revive old buildings and repurpose them rather than tearing them down and these folks did an awesome job of taking an old service station and turning it into a fun, relaxing spot. We ordered a couple of lattes, one hot and one cold and two bagels, one with cream cheese and one with a non-dairy schemeer. They asked if we wanted our bagels toasted or not. I found the bagel to be a very good boiled bagel with a good chew and the cream cheese was tasty and had been spread on my bagel. My partner who has dairy issues loved the non-dairy spread, saying it was one of the best she has had. I tasted it and thought it was a great alternative. Our drinks were good, they purchase their beans from a local roaster. She enjoyed her cold latte, I enjoyed my hot latte but prefer my coffee a bit more robust than this one was. They had seven people working behind the counter and the line moved quickly, our food and beverage was ready in a few minutes and I liked that all of their packaging, cups, containers and cutlery were compostable. Hopefully the area has composting facilities to manage these products properly. All in all, agreat experience. I have to give this place their flowers and bump up the overall review score of this place. Mind you, this was my first and only visit here, but I can understand the complexities of managing demand when you have an exceptional product. Arrived late Thursday morning and there was still a line nearly spanning the length of the interior of the building. No worries, I said, it has to be worth the wait. And it sure was. I ordered the jalapeno cheddar bagel with plain cream cheese and my partner ordered the rosemary sea salt bagel with (I don't remember) cream cheese. Both were phenomenal - the slight chewiness of a proper bagel with the fluffiness of something you know was baked fresh that morning. And now I'm getting word they're testing out egg, cheese, and meat breakfast sandwiches. I may be prepared to wait a bit longer because these folks deserve it. Lastly, a brief note on the interior and exterior. Could not be a cooler concept - taking an old gas station and converting it into a place where you can serve food while preserving some of the name. There's a great outdoor sitting area and an indoors with garage doors waiting to be opened at the first sign of warm weather. Wow...These bagels are amazing. I worked in manhattan for years so am very picky. The boiled bagels are fresh and perfectly prepared with great texture unknown in the 'northern' New England area. Delicious bagels, plenty of cream cheese. Packaging was great. Liked that the bagels were packaged open faced. Plenty of shear on both halves. The vibe of the place is great. Coffee wasn't hot, just luke warm. Wish they had veggie cream cheese. Hopefully one day they will have bagel sandwiches. Definitely worth a try. Parking lot was a plus. read more

Didn't live up to the hype..or the wait.. Happy to no longer be looking at an abandoned gas station, but this is clearly a club house side hustle for someone with too much money and pta parents to impress. More attention to service..expand upon hours, days, menu options. If you dont want to cut or spread cream cheese maybe consider making it a self serve setup? Would move quicker and not make for a 30 min wait. Or not...if just being better then an abandoned gas station is the bar, you've nailed it. read more

Even before 7am, had to wait about 15 minutes, this place is popular! They sold out of 800 bagels by 9:30 so be sure to go early. Once in line, it moves fast, friendly service, bagels came out almost immediately, and they were delicious. I took mine to go, but it seemed like a nice place to sit and eat. read more

I don't know why there are so many negative reviews. While my experience was not AMAZING, it was really solid! I had a cacio e pepe bagel with plain schmear. My wife got a plain bagel with chive schmear because they ran out of a lot of the other bagels. The service was pretty good and the ambiance is nothing like anything out here in New England. My wife got an iced chai that was pretty bland and almost tasted like there was no sugar in it. All that being said, this place has potential, and for a place that is just getting its bearings, it's definitely got some room to grow but it can really take off and I feel like people are being super critical towards a fairly new establishment. Ahhh, The Getty Bagel. A long time eye sore gas station in Portsmouth that has had a more money dumped into a face lift than Cher, Kaitlyn Jenner and Dolly Parton combined. The city is no help welcoming new businesses or assisting with renovations, so some level of pardon is granted. However this place established itself with logos and art, social media and a presence as all the locals who are desperate and seeking some kind of food excitement waiting far too long for the doors to open to the public. I say to the public because there were poorly organised tastings that began to show the exclusive side of this boiled dough establishment. With t-shirts that read, "We love old people" adorned by management and its social media posts incubating, we saw lines that stretched around the corner and down the street. Yet, empty tables inside and out. The place that has a mascot and Instagram regular on line stories and reels, but cannot even figure out how to do business. They have funny sayings and put stickers on light posts along Islington, but cannot master the skill of putting an already prepared bagel into a bag in any timely manner. An already prepared bagel. They won't toast them. Already made coffee. With garbage syrups. It should be a lightning fast transaction. Spoiler: it's not. This place serves bagels. They are decent. But bagels. And coffee. That's it. Everything is already made by the time the doors open for business, but with their priorities focused on promoting a business that barely even exists, they fail miserably. Less exclusivity and more elbow grease is what this place needs. Now I know the blood is boiling in the real housewives of Portsmouth who cannot accept reality that includes any criticism. But this place has swung and missed so far. Aside from putting out a bagel that tops most other microwaved bagel businesses in Portsmouth, that is all they have done. There is nothing exclusive about bagels. This seems like a money dump for someone who apparently has too much of it to worry about or share with the destitute. A loss to balance out major gains. A true 2025 symbol of America's greed. Right here in Portsmouth. The fad and excitement will end the same way Market Square of old has ended. The same way Portsmouth charm is ending. People can only eat so many bagels in a lifetime. Or a month. The renovation will be nice for the next occupant. Hopefully they will know how to run a business. Check it out. And then kindly move back along to your lives and hopeless dreams of adding to Portsmouth's mediocre food scene. Two stars. And only for the bagels. read more

Highly recommend!!!! Excellent bagel experience despite the anxiety of the wait and concern of them running out of bagels. Their goal is to sell out and while that is admirable, it made me nervous! We got in line at 7:25 AM for a Sunday 730 opening. The line was already on the sidewalk, but we got lucky and stood with a friendly cluster of customers. The ordering process was smooth, but be sure you know what you want! Read the signs. Otherwise it will feel like the soup Nazi on Seinfeld. The employees are lovely, but the people behind you will yell out "no bagel for you." There were two of us, and we each ordered a single bagel, sliced and shared a 4 ounce. The cream cheese was plenty for two bagels. We had extra! No need to order your own cream cheese individually (bagel hack). The coffee is strong and good. The café is in a converted gas station. Well that might seem unusual, it's actually quite beautiful and lends a fun vibe. The seating area is indoor/outdoor and they open the garage doors so that it's just a lovely ambience. The hipsters have done it again, and this time they've ruined bagels! First of all, to even call what they produce bagels is an insult to bakers of bagels everywhere and if that wasn't bad enough, they have one of the most poorly run establishments I have ever seen, and I used to own a bagel shop. When we arrived we were told that our bagels would not be toasted as they came out of the oven moments before and would be piping hot. And then as I watched her place my bagel into a paper bag even though I was eating it there, she told me that they would not put the cream cheese on it because they were too busy to do so, that I needed to tear it into pieces and dunk it in my cup of cream cheese. Upon opening my bag at the table, my bagel was stone cold, could not be cut in half with the flimsy, biodegradable plastic knife they gave me, and it could barely handle the freezing cold cream cheese that I was supposed to spread on this chunk of bagel I had ripped off. I didn't even bother, although I did taste the bagel and imagine my surprise when really it's nothing more than a tasteless, sourdough bread roll that has neither the classic chewiness of a bagel nor the thick dense texture. I will say the coffee was decent, although that too was lukewarm, whereas my friends's cup of tea was so hot that it melted the plastic lid that they put on her cup so that she couldn't open it to add sugar. Please do everyone a favor and quit while you're ahead, this is not the right business for you! read more

If you notice on their review page anyone who is not totally positive does not receive a response from the owner. the bagels are OK but not great and the business model is not good. Runs out of bagels by 9am or so, very limited selection, doesn't slice bagels, doesn't toast bagels, no plates, etc. You get your bagel in a paper bag and the cream cheese in a plastic container. Closed Monday and Tuesday which is insane for a bagel and coffee place that opens for a few hours each day. if this business model doesn't change quickly they are destined for failure. read more
