What arrived had barely any sweet potato and only three small, chopped pieces of chicken, not even full pieces. Thinking it might have been a mistake, I asked the chef if I could get a bit more chicken. He told me he'd already given me "double the portion," which was confusing given how little chicken was actually in the bowl. When I asked if there was anything that could be done, he literally said he "wasn't giving out free food," and that if I wanted more chicken, I'd need to pay for an additional serving. So I did. Portion sizes like this are simply unacceptable, especially when a dish is priced as a full salad with protein included. It wasn't just the portion size that was disappointing. Visited with a group of 5 during Portsmouth Pride, and although it was busy, the staff at The Works were friendly, efficient, and did a great job. I ordered an everything bagel, toasted with scallion cream creese and a lemonade. The lemonade tasted fresh and hit the spot. The everything bagel was too salty for me, but still good, and the scallion cream cheese was generously spread and delicious. A few of my friends ordered sandwiches and one got the mac & cheese, which was also good. The seating area was pleasant, and I believe there were also a few tables outside as well. Could not possibly recommend. All of their "food" clearly comes from Sysco. You can taste the lack of flavour in the ingredients. This place is horribly inefficient. One person with a teflon pan heating up all the orders for food, orders backed up out the wazoo accordingly, and final product is dry, hard, and lackluster. Even the smoothie I ordered tasted nothing like what it actually said was in it. Horrible Was not offered or directed to any utensils. The packaging products used are the kind of "eco" that are absolutely non-functional. Think about this: my food was placed in a cardboard pulp bowl, with a plastic top.... I saved most of my food for later, as I did not want to keep eating it, nor lose out on my investment (at least give myself the option to try again). When I got home, my food was leaking through the bottom. But the top is plastic. Make it make sense. Aura and presentation of farm to table, but incredibly fake and lack luster. Not worth a dime. Clear lack of logic all-around. Could not be more disappointed. read more

I'm a HUGE fan of this spot! I stumbled upon it when I first arrived to Portsmouth and was looking for a quick, fulfilling lunch. And that's certainly what I found! For a reasonable price, the sandwiches are massive and stuffed to the edge with the most fresh, cohesive ingredients around! For how quick it was made, the meal still seemed to be created with lots of care. I certainly recommend the turkey avocado (although i wish it had slightly more turkey)- the bread is crisp, the avocado creamy, the turkey tender, and everything else complimentary and super fresh! As for the vibes, both inside and outside, they were lovely! As I had my dog with me, I was able to enjoy the fresh sunshine and relax with a beautiful view (albeit the street gets a little busy). However, I would have also loved to sit in their quiet yet social interior which was filled with good smells and great energy! I'd also like to mention the amazing service! Their workers are super fast and helpful. I actually initially placed my order online to the wrong location, reordered at the new one, and submitted a refund request (despite it being against their policy bc you never know), and was met with a speedy response that was understanding and gave me an immediate refund, no questions asked! This experience brightened an already great trip to Portsmouth and an already delicious meal! It can get very crowded, so if you come you're better off taking it to go. My girlfriend and her mom and I ordered iced tea and mochas. I was amazed at the size and price of both the iced latte and chai, they were huge and both under $5, which in my opinion and experience is unheard of. I was in Portsmouth for three days and I went to The Works four times. I got the smoked salmon sandwich three times, and I give it my highest recommendation. The veggie cream cheese takes it to a new level. The everything bagels are thoroughly coated on both sides, and have a good, bagely chew that I appreciate. The chicken salad was okay. The ratio felt a bit off with the greens and the chicken, but the sweet potato added something unique. My friend got the barbecue chicken sandwich and really enjoyed it. The service was very quick and there was a good amount of seating. Everyone working who I interacted with was very kind and patient, even when it was really busy. So the bagels were good but slightly heavy. They were a nice size but just a little dense. The chew was good. The smoked salmon cream cheese was good but there was a lot of it and I took some off. The salt bagel was good too just same consistency issues as the onion bagel. I'm not sure if the dough was a little heavy or if they were just slightly stale. I'd definitely come back here though. I felt like a Gilmore girl (yes I know it did not take place anywhere near here). This place had the easiest parking to find compared to the others shops I perused. When you walk into this place you are greeted by so many delicious flavors! I couldn't tell you how hard it was to not grab lunch, but I had a deadline to be home. However, the entire menu looked appetizing. There was ample seating even on a busier day and plenty of staff members to take your order. I ended up just getting a latte with almond milk and caramel.
