    Dry, hard, overcooked and stale

The poperovers were stiff, dry, crunchy. The scrambled eggs has black chunks of cooked food remnants and dark chunks of burned cooking oil from the surface they were cooked on. Staff were not friendly. The butter and jam are in those small tacky plastic travel sized portions one would get on an airplane. $33 for the most unapetizing and underwhelming meal.

Cute breakfast/ lunch spot. You go up to the front and order your food and then they bring it over to you. I got the quiche and mini popover with salad and it was very good. They have so many amazing pasties as well. Great spot!

Found this great spot for family meal and highly recommend if you're in Portsmouth. The Popovers are delicious AND they make a gluten free popover as well!!! In fact, their entire menu is very friendly for GF people. We had the quiche, Reuben sandwich, ramen bowl and popovers. All delicious and the staff were super friendly and helpful. It's a big space but not too loud. Overall great experience. Check out their desserts as well - cookies and macaroons were SO good!

First time in New Hampshire and was told that it's known for their popovers. Coming from Florida, what in the world are these. The staff were super friendly and welcomed me by it being my first time. The popover with egg and cheese was extraordinary. I also got a cup of clam chowder with a popover and that was memorable. The eclair was also amazing. I will forever remember this place and this spot will be the first stop when I come back.

Popped in for lunch (got there after 11a so missed the opportunity for breakfast foods). Vibe: Seat yourself, indoor and outdoor seating, counter service. Surrounding downtown is really cute with lots of restaurants and shops. Service: The staff behind the counter were really nice and answered all the questions I had really pleasantly. Food came out pretty quick. Food: Avocado toast: portion was on the small side and could have used 1-2 more flavor elements but the bread was really good quality on the whole was very tasty. Popover: Soft and eggy on the inside, maple butter was good. Value: The avocado toast being $13 was overvalued in in my opinion. Popover was $4. Overall really enjoyed lunch here, pros were the cute town, friendly staff and tasty food, cons is small portions for price.

Four dollars for a delicious popover with maple butter is a deal ! Lots of other goodies inside restaurant. Outdoor seating available. Clean restrooms.

Cute cafe with tons of yummy pastries and breakfast and lunch food. I really enjoyed my coffee there. I love that it's self serve and they have different blends and flavors or drip coffee to choose from. I loved that they had cookies for a dollar. I tried a popover and it was just okay. The maple butter was absolutely delicious, but the pop over is a little dry and underwhelming. The servers were kind, but they messed up our very simple order.

You order at the counter and find a seat. Servers bring your order over. The food was tasty. The popover came with a sweet and delicious maple butter. The tomato bisque and clam chowder were perfectly creamy and tasty. The pulled pork sandwich was tasty and on the chewier side.

Popovers on the Square is conveniently located in Portsmouth and is a very pleasant place with good people-watching from their patio. We were there in September, after the crush of tourists, but it was still pretty busy. I am a popover lover, but I realize that popovers must be served hot to be at their peak. The sandwiches were at a disadvantage because the popovers were at room temperature. The two extra popovers we got and ate for breakfast the next day were not ideal (we had no way of reheating them.) I mention this because although not the fault of the restaurant, you will do yourself a favor just to get hot popovers and eat them immediately with their excellent maple butter. I had the salmon plate (aka lox, cream cheese on a popover). This was a good portion of lox, with nice accompaniments including chopped egg and pickled onions. I was wary of pickled onions, but they were a fantastic addition because the acidity countered the fattiness of the cream cheese and of the salmon. Honestly, I'd rather have this on a bagel, but when the name of the restaurant is "Popovers," that seemed foolish. My wife had the egg salad sandwich, which normally comes on a toasted sourdough roll, but she opted for a popover. Again, although the popover was good, it didn't really provide the optimal holder for the egg salad. My rating was a quandary because we really liked the ambiance and the food, but because of what we ordered, the popover wasn't the best choice to show-off the popovers. I think this would be a better place for breakfast than lunch and by ordering in a way that best shows off the popover. Based on what we ordered, three stars is fair, but based on the potential of ordering differently, I'm sure they would be four stars.

    tomato soup with popover yum!!

Nice warm respite from the cold weather. My daughter ordered the quiche and i got the tomato soup and a popover. The soup was just creamy tomato deliciousness. The popover was perfect for dipping in the soup. Quiche was tasty. Service was quick and the restroom was clean. The baked goods looked tasty as well! i'll definitely return!

Are the Pop overs come out steaming hot?

Not when we were there. We went later in the afternoon so I can't speak to what happens in the morning. They were also pretty small.

Can I get a lunch sandwich at 8 am?

    Yes you can

We chose seats at the comfortable-looking bar, which was a great spot to start the evening and soak in the warm, antique, historical vibe of the space -- lots of character without feeling stuffy. We built our own dinner from a mix of appetizers, and everything we tried was excellent. The local cheese plate featured a soft, brie-like cheese that was rich and delicious. We also ordered the mussels, which were a standout -- especially the mustard component. I wouldn't have expected mustard to pair so well with mussels, but it absolutely worked and added a surprising depth of flavor. There was also a chicken dumpling special that was comforting, well-seasoned, and very satisfying. Every dish felt thoughtfully prepared and full of flavor. The service at the bar was fantastic. The staff were friendly, knowledgeable, and genuinely helpful when offering advice on what to order, which made the whole experience feel easy and welcoming. We're already looking forward to our next visit and trying more of the menu.

The food however is overpriced and just doesn't fit the bill. I was surprised to sit down and see a simple steak and potato dinner was $72. I ordered duck and my wife ordered pork belly. The food was alright but neither were meals that we'd want again. Two entrees, two apps, and a single glass of wine. ~$180 with tip. I don't mind spending $200 on dinner - but if I'm spending that much dinner should be stellar. This was just mediocre and I'm honestly surprised it has a 4.5 star rating average. To each their own I suppose.

This quaint gastropub doesn't look like much from the outside, but inside, this seems like a place where locals are regulars and tourists are happy to get a table at this "no reservations" joint. It's dark inside (no photos) and a little cramped. The bartenders are serving double duty mixing and pouring drinks while also playing DJ and spinning vinyl records. And it felt like everyone inside was exactly where they wanted to be at the moment...enjoying each other's company and sharing drinks and food. The menu is about the size you would expect from a small kitchen - a fair number of appetizer dishes meant for sharing, and a handful of entrees, ranging from casual to a bit more refined. The grilled cheese and tomato soup ($19) was made with a hearty artisan bread that hit the spot on a chilly evening. Similarly, the coq au vin ($26) was classic comfort food, with perfectly cooked smashed fingerling potatoes surrounded by a rich, decadent reduction sauce smothering meaty mushrooms and soft pearl onions. Note, the coq au vin did take a long time to prepare, so not the dish to order if you're in a hurry. A couple of not-too-sweet lemon ricotta donuts (with chocolate sauce) was a great way to end the meal.

Well, I'm happy that they were because dinner here was SOOOO good! The bartender helped us choose a bottle of champagne to start. We shared everything. One of each of the deviled eggs each. The maple cranberry was interesting. The sour cream chive one was to die for! The ricotta gnocchi was elegant and fluffy. The sauce made it over the top. The ribs were good, but I'm a Midwest girl. They just don't compare to back home. The clam linguine was seasoned perfectly. It was quite filling. We ended with the Apple Olive Oil cake with maple ice cream. The cake itself was quite dense and dry. The ice cream helped. I would not order this dessert again. Service was quite SLOWWWW, and for no reason as they weren't very busy while we were there. There were long gaps between courses and then once we were finished we kind of just sat there for a while. The food was worth it but something is not running efficiently and could be improved. Still giving 5 starts because it was so good and everyone was welcoming.

If you get this salad and you want a nice kick ask for jalapeños ! BOMB! The Signature Burger was pretty good I will say I did ask them to add jalapeños to that order as well which gave it a awesome kick as well but I will say the bun was a little hard so each bite was a bit tough. That wasn't a horrible thing but it made the burger less appealing. None the less that doesn't defeat the FLAVOR because it was good !
