My go-to bar for sure. Can get busy with finance bros, but the service and price for the quality is definitely worth it. Sometimes when it's super busy the wait can be extended but it's never too bad if you have a modicum of patience. My favorite waitress is Megan, who took the time to get to know me as a patron and knows my order by the time I walk in. She's always so excited to see me and will make me feel special while tending to other patrons. I also love Alyssa (pink hair) who was most recently waitressing and bartending all at the same time during a busy night, but still made time to make me and my friend from out of town feel welcome! Amazing service from really nice people in the seating area. The hot wings HIT. Their house made guac is pretty good too! I love greasy bar food and they tick every box. The happy hour specials are unbeatable. This place reminds me of my hometown bars. It's comforting. Nothing special but also a place where everyone will learn your name! read more

As someone who works in the vicinity of this bar and has had to frequent Jake's Dilemma let me just say, "Why weren't we coming here?!" I went to Gin Mill on a Tuesday night for a going away party. First, it was Ladies' Night so beer was $1 or something from 8pm on. Amazing. There was a weird crowd, for sure (As is the case with most of this family of bars) but less fratty than I'd expect. My friends ordered food to the table and the waitress was pretty spacey and slow but the bar tenders seemed to be decent and it's a decent atmosphere in there. The Gin Mill reminds me of a college frat house party- but with food and shorter bathroom lines. I love the beer pong tables at the back and the high tables and stools near them- a great place to hang out and to have your own mini-tournament with friends! They have tons of great drink specials on pitchers, buckets, and shots (eww...). The Gin Mill did really let me down in a way, though. You see, I saw on their menu that they had fries than you could add both cheese and gravy to- and I thought to myself, POUTINE! (For my non-Canadian friends, poutine is an amazing French-Canadian delicacy consisting of french fries with melting cheese and rich brown gravy. Trust me- it's delicious!). I of course ordered the fries with cheese and gravy- and was promptly disappointed. It was all wrong. Not poutine. The gravy was strange (oddly dry and tasting more like Lowry's Seasoning Salt than brown gravy) and the gravy:cheese ratio was strange. I'd skip it. read more

Two amazing redeeming qualities of this frat bar - it's close and it has a fantastic happy hour. And if you hit this place on a weekday at the beginning of happy hour, it may even be mellow enough where you might enjoy yourself with your fellow guest. Other than that, if a game is playing, be prepared to have it more than blasting from the multiple tv screens that adorn the bar. Service is back and forth, but the only extremely obnoxious person of note is one of the bouncers at the door checking IDs who has a real attitude. I am taking consideration their covid restrictions etc. after we ordered off of a small menu, well after we ordered, our waitress came to tell us they no longer have burgers or chicken. That means they could no longer do 90% of the menu. This was only at 8 pm. I ended up getting a grilled cheese. The cheese was shiny and looked unmelted. Aka fake cheese. Very underwhelmed. Prices are okay, service, can't complain. Only thing I didn't like, took 3 different servers to get them to change the channel to a game I wanted to watch, and before it was over, the DJ changed it again and I missed the final 30 minutes (which was actually a nail-biter game). Amazing happy hour deals in Monday. They have half off beers on tap. My friend and I had 2 IPAs each and our bill was only 14 bucks! So worth the stop by after work. On a trip to NYC, we checked this place out to watch the NCAA tourney. Like any good sports bar, it was packed! They had a first-come, first-serve type of seating, which frankly I hate. But after talking to a waitress, we decided to wait (she informed us that two tables had paid and should be leaving). Well, our wait turned into a 20-25 min wait. That sucked, because I was SO hungry, but it wasn't that bad of a wait considering how packed it was. We eventually got a seat and ordered. I got the Gin Mill Burger. What a treat! Nice big burger with cheddar, bacon, mushrooms and grilled onions! Oh it also comes with jalapeno peppers, but I asked them to hold those. The burgers and sandwiches come with a variety of different sides, one of which is tater tots!! Of course, I jumped on the chance to have tots with my meal. However, they failed to give them to me and instead my burger showed up with fries. I didn't say anything because 1) I was starving and 2) our waitress would go missing in action for 15-20 mins at a time. The service was sloooow. Again, the place was super crowded, so it was expected. However, after a while, we noticed our waitress was the ONLY one serving an area of about 40-50 people! No lie! I felt bad for her. I asked for a side of mustard, but never got it. She later came back when she remembered and seemed to feel really bad for not bringing it. She was super nice, but unfortunately, she was the only one working. I recommend probably not going here on a game night if they usually have 1 waitress serving so many people. Other than that, I enjoyed my food and would go back to see a regular game and not a big tournament. read more

It's a dive bar, but has a fun energy and makes me feel like I'm drinking on a school night back in college (Conor Larkin's, anyone?). They usually have sports games on the tv''s, loud music, and beer pong in the back of the bar. It's a mixed crowd of 20 somethings and college kids...big after work crowd. Not really a place to bring a date, too loud and crazy! Their best quality? Prices! Every night there is a different drink special (same with their other locations-Jake's and the Stumble Inn). But Thursday nights is apparently College Night, and everything at the bar is half price! My friend and I ordered two Ketel One and Sodas...the total came to about $6.50...I looked at the bartender and said "No, we're paying together, what's the total?" She just looked at us, while we waited until she finally told us. $3.25???? For one drink?? Needless to say, my head was hurting the next morning. Their food is pretty good too! They have these tater tots with melted cheese, you can get gravy on it as well...amazing. 4 stars for the fact that it's just a typical dive bar, there's nothing really special to it, but it's a fun place and on a great block on Amsterdam. My friends and I came here for Memorial Day weekend and we had a blast! They have large screen tvs which the guys loved since the basketball playoffs was on. We came here on a Sunday so the drinks were super cheap! From 8pm-close you can get any draft bottles, specialty drinks, and shots at only $4.00! Can't get any better than that! We found parking right out front. Crowd was cool! Music was good! And the ambiance very chill! And they also serve food. We ordered wings and Mac and cheese. Mac and cheese surprisingly good! I came to this place before going to a concert at Beacon Theater. I really liked the feel and the way it looked. But this can be said about many spots in NYC. The food though was not that great. I went with something simple - boneless buffalo wings. Truthfully they were pretty bad. They had a long tender shape with way to much fried batter and not enough meat, and had way too much sauce to try to compensate for the lack of meat. I had bites of my friends' sandwiches and burgers which were decent. So maybe I just got the wrong meal, I don't know. The Gin Mill belongs to a chain of "Best Bars" in New York. All bars, including Jakes Dilemma, The Gin Mill's neighbor, have the most ridiculous happy hour specials DAILY. I mean, ridiculous. Wednesday night Ladies' Night, Tuesday Night $2 drafts, every day until 8:00 pm 1/2 off the bar, including food. These are just a few to give you a "for example" of how insane the drink prices are. I usually visit this place during the week or during the day on a weekend. It is a great place to watch a game, meet up with a few friends, and have a few cheap beers. This definitely is not a place I would ever go on a first date to, go to meet men, or meet a friend I need to have a serious conversation with (the place is so loud that I can barely hear myself think.) The Gin Mill serves its purpose, which is to provide a casually fun atmosphere, cheap drinks, and a really awesome 90's playlist. read more

My favorite bar! Felt it was appropriate to finally review it after visiting last night for what has to be like the 50th time. I have celebrated so much at this place - graduations, birthdays, promotions, break ups lol you name it! It's a lot of fun and they always have some kind of special going on. The wings and sweet potato tater tots are great and so are the fried mac and cheese wedges! Although its just typical bar food I love it. The service is also good, I've never had a problem. The Gin Mill has to be one of New York City's best kept secret in the Upper West Side. It is a sports bar that actually opens up at noon and its HAPPY HOUR is actually from Noon to 8pm including weekdays with half price on well drinks and beers from the tap. For example a pint of Sam Adams is only $3.50. They have several large TV screens carrying whatever sports is on at the moment. Stroll in on a weekday afternoon and you will most likely find Euro Soccer playing on the screen. It is one of few places I have seen that on a Tuesday afternoon by 3pm it is already filling up with people. The weekends are usually packed especially when their is a big game on. I do not give it a full 5 stars because while the food is good it can sometimes be a bit of a hit and miss sometimes. So the primary reason to go there should be to drink with food being just something to accompany the drinks or appetizers for people to dig in. The staff are very friendly and helpful. One last thing they have $4 Js special which is a shot of Jagermeister, Jameson or Jacks. Enjoy! read more

Great management and attentive bartenders that are down to earth. Haven't tried the food, too expensive in comparison to the happy hour drinks.
