I feel terrible for this place. This is a cool bar to start with, good selection of beers and drinks, decent food and yet- Terrible Service. Especially at the bar. You cannot get a drink in under 15minutes. The owners must be fattening their wallets and hiring one more bar hand would absolutely kill them! Such a shame. read more

Loved the place until the 3rd time I went back I still kept being overcharged, not cool. Place had good bar food and drinks are cheap but if you get overcharged it doesn't make it worth your wild. This is a cool place but I would definitely look at my receipt everytime after my third incident, because of this gin mill bar wouldn't be a place I would get drunk. Also everytime I have gone here all bartender seem so snotty and give you a mean look, I felt everytime I wanted to order a drink they got bothered. I would never come back here again. A friend and I ordered a drink, at 7:40pm, and ordered food never saw the waitress with pink hair again. It took them an hour to deliver an appetizer we ordered, we were never asked if we wanted another drink, we had to go to the bar and order it. Our waitress finally came over after now an hour and 20 minutes to say do you need anything. Never apologized or seemed to care. We finally asked to speak the manager and his response was it's busy. Funny thing is she paid attention to every table around us, but ours, so the excuse of she was busy was not acceptable. Being in the customer service business myself makes me less understanding of poor reactions from businesses. read more

While in a pinch to catch a bit of sports before work, the Gin Mill wasn't a bad stop. There were a few butthole surfers at the bar cruising for trouble. The door staff was enabling it since he did not intervene. I guess those guys must have been regulars. The placed was packed so to get a Medium Rare Burger in twenty minutes was 'acceptable.' I did not have to wait for an IPA, however. The tater tots were fresh. The mayo did not have the glassy-eyed look of being scooped and left outside like that child getting on a yellow bus. $3.75 for a Maker's Manhattan during Happy Hour and a bartender who looks like Veronica Mars. I really liked the vibe here, also. Seemed less fratty than the other bars along that stretch of Amsterdam. Well, what can you say about a Sunday night bar that offers "$3 everything." Thats a pretty solid deal no matter who you are. Thus, it made it a little easier to tolerate the meat market (14:1 guy to girl ratio is probably a conservative estimate), the HORRIBLE service, the crappy food and the ear-splitting top 40 music. My friends and I have been going to Gin Mill about once a month on Monday nights for years. However, after our latest trip we will be no longer be going to Gin Mill ever again. The male bartender was the rudest and most unprofessional person I have ever encountered. He was consistently bothering the female bartender instead of giving us service. On top of that he proceeded to try and push drinks on one of my friends who is a recovering alcoholic, to the point where he got bitchy and made some comment about putting his dick on the bar. The guy was definitely new so I didn't catch his name, unfortunately. It's sad to see what used to be a great spot for cheap drinks and sports go down the drain due to a terrible employee. read more

A Fratsterdam swordfight at night but it's a good spot to watch weekend sports (particularly if you're a U of Florida fan). Great spread of flat screen TVs. Solid selection of beers on tap. They've recently redid their menu - I tried the French Dip sandwich and it was passable. read more

Quite simply my favorite bar in New York City. Yes it is a younger (and oftentimes more annoying) crowd than many, but I put my 5 stars into two far more important points: 1) Their incredible drink prices. There is virtually always a special at any time you are in the bar. When the nightly special ends, happy hour begins and goes until closing. That alone is reason enough to dig in and never even consider another bar. 2) Their awesome bar swill. Some of the best pub grub around. I come here A LOT! But, recently I was here after a kickball game, and not only was the service terrible, but the food was just as bad. I order boneless wings, and they took an hour to come out. When they did, they were freezing cold in the middle. When I told the food runner they were cold, he rolled his eyes and took them back. I got the wings back, and they were OBVIOUSLY Microwaved because they one I cut in half was still there, and they were no longer crispy. They were rubbery and covered in sauce to try and "cover up" that they were the same wings and nuked rather than remade. I don't know if I can come back to this bar now after our games once a week with such terrible food. In the past the food was fine bar food, but this just pissed me off. On top of that we couldn't get the attention of our waitress on a non crowded Wednesday night. Very disappointing. read more

I used to go here for Florida Gator football games but they no longer host them here. I stopped by for a beer on a weekday and they have pretty good happy hour deals for the upper west side area. Food menu is decent and lots of tvs. Wish they would bring back the Gator games though! read more

The only reason I come here is because it's the Gators (my alma mater) official NYC bar and it can be alot of fun to watch games here. It's a dive bar and although I have nothing against dive bars, in fact I am quite fond of them, this one reminds me of a big frat party. Ok, let's be honest here. What do I expect from this place? I really don't think they give 2 sh*ts what anyone says but it makes me feel better to write this. I was hungry around lunchtime today and needed a place with WiFi as I was on a deadline. I had been to Gin Mill midday for lunch before while finishing up work and though the grilled chicken wrap doesn't have much flavor (it's really a crappy college bar, not a great culinary adventure here) but it would do for the moment. I used the restroom downstairs passing under a woman fiddling around in some sort of "crow's nest" apparatus above the stairs. After the bathroom break, I re-emerge and see she's still up there. I go take a seat right next to where she is in a booth. I open my laptop and connect and begin work. I'm waiting. and waiting. Finally I ask the girl how I order. Maybe I need to go to the bar (though that's not how it was before...maybe they are short today. Full disclosure, I was a bartender and a beverage director for a total of about 6 years...I've been there. I know the ins and outs of the biz and how to run a bar). She barely bothers to look up and says, "From me." No "I'll be right there" or "what would you like" or "sorry, I'll be with you in a moment" Just "From me." Awesome customer service there. So now I'm a bit turned off. I wait few moments, with hope she will get it together. Nope. I ask if she can grab me a coke. It's not good when a customer feels hesitant to ask for something... She doesn't look up: "Sure"...and doesn't move. I wait a few minutes. Still there, fiddling around. Ummm...what are you doing, lady?! At this point, I'm not sure if I will ever get my coke or for that matter, a meal at this pace. I pack up and start to head for the door, she scurries behind the bar but it's too late. I ask for the manager and she gives me the excuse she was fixing the TVs. I explain I was waiting and management should know what kind of service is being provided but give up on that and walk out. The TV's were on and playing fine. If it's not an emergency, you take care of your customers first. ALWAYS. Simple service standards here. I walked about a block up to George Keeley, which also has WiFi, way better food (and beer though I wasn't having an afternoon drink today!) and I was greeted immediately, brought water and just treated wonderfully (honestly, being acknowledged was wonderful after Gin Mill) Don't waste your time at Gin Mill unless you are a college kid looking to play beer pong. And management, teach that girl working today simple service standards...though maybe that's why she's the lunch bartender...probably can't hack the night shifts! read more

There aren't often lines at Gin Mill, but a few nights ago, there was. A bunch of people left, so my friend asked if they would let people in. The bouncer said "nope". So as we turned to leave, my friend loudly said something like "Well then I guess we'll have to go to Jake's Dilemma". When we got to Jake's Dilemma (same owner), the bouncer wouldn't let my friend in because the bouncer at Gin Mill had radio'd him. TL;DR: The bouncers at Gin Mill are jerks. read more

I generally hate bars like this but a friend was there so I decided to stop in. Me: "Hey how is your Guinness?" Bartender: "Well do you like Guinness?" Me: "Yes but good Guinness, that's why I'm asking." Bartender: "Well then you'll like our Guinness" The bartender then poured the worst Guinness I've ever drank in NYC. There is a certain way to pour a Guinness, you failed. There is a certain presentation that a Guinness has when it arrives, you also fail. And lastly, Guinness has a certain taste...EPIC FAIL. Goodbye Gin Mill you're a disgrace to Ireland. The Brooklyn Lager bottle was also skunk. That reminds me too - I used to live in this hood and ordered a cheesesteak. When I got home I realized they gave me the wrong order...so I marched back to get the correct thing and the bartender proceeded with trying to charge me for the extra food they gave me. Uh you just effed up my order, wasted my time to come back here and now you're going to try to charge me for something I didn't order...unreal. Please go out of business or hire some professional bartenders and get real taps. Go down one block to Jake's Dilemma (same owners I think, may be wrong) if you want to get the fratty dive bar feel. read more

Went here twice while visiting NYC. The kitchen is open late which is a great because our plane was delayed so we didn't get to check into our hotel until midnight. Went looking for food and it was the only place still serving food which was awesome!!! The food was great! read more

The burger was good. But a very average sports bar, with very average service. But they have a sketchy policy with an open tab. Why is is that they won't give you your credit card back until everything is paid? What if you don't want to pay with it? Then they can't seem to properly charge credit cards. So sketch. read more

I think that the ratings distribution says it all. The vast majority of people rated The Gin Mill three stars, and I agree. It's an OK bar. The bartenders are attentive and make a good drink. There are plenty of TVs, but there isn't a whole lot that really sets this place apart. The crowd isn't exactly anything to write home about, but that's probably just the fact that I'm 29 and getting a little old for this type of place. One recommendation: They have "seasoned tater tots", and their kitchen is open extremely late. You can't go wrong with tater tots when you're incredibly drunk. read more

I've only been here on a weeknight and, if you come with a group of friends, it's actually a great place to meet up and hang. When we went, there was no table service, and only one bartender on duty, but there were maybe 15 people in there total (including my whole group). I liked it and I would definitely go back during the week. But I can't imagine coming here during peak times, it's not that special, just a good, friendly, neighborhood dive bar. read more

I've been to this place MANY times. The drink deals are great and they have 3 beer pong tables in the back. They also have a bunch of TV's in the back with several tables you can sit at as well as tables in the front for a more intimate setting though when it's pack, that's the worst place to be. They have a good DJ at times as well Waiters are decent on time and the bartenders are good as well. Overall a good place. The food is decent too. I truly have no complaints. My advice is to get here somewhat early because it tends to get packed as time goes on. read more
