Had only a little bit of time to kill before going on the 7 seas whale watching tour and we wanted a small bit to eat until the tour was over. The Gloucester house was close by. We walked into the bar, the bartender was super nice. She ensured us our food would come out quickly so we wouldn't be late for our tour. We split the lobster roll with fries. Such a solid choice, it came out fast, hot, and with lots of flavor! The lobster was fresh and lightly dressed with some herbs and butter. The roll was soft stuffed full of that wonderful lobster meat. The beers were cold and they had a great selection for a small bar. Highly recommend to anyone looking for a quick bite before their tour leaves. read more

Don't go here unless you're part of the 1%. You will be judged by the host. We were stuck in a rain storm on a motorcycle so we only had this place as an option to eat, we went and asked about a table for 2, we were greeted by an unfriendly host who looked us up and down and basically waved us off to the side. Food was fresh , right out of harbor. Had fish and chips . The breading on the fish lacked any flavor . Coleslaw good , cornbread really good. Waitress was good too . Server wasn't very attentive, nor did she know the menu very well. We sat outside and the outside area needs to be painted and cleaned. It needs maintenance! We drove from Boston to Gloucester on a rainy Sunday. The sky's seemed to clear as we arrived and we found The Gloucester House with no problem. There is some lovely history to the place if you care to read up on it. We didn't have a reservation and waited 2-3 minutes for our table. Service was fast, efficient and friendly. My husband and I brought our Dutch friend along and he was game to try anything. So we ordered a few things and shared. After we ordered, the waitress brought out these (complimentary) fresh-from-the-oven hot and heavenly cornbread. We all couldn't stop eating them. They'd quickly replenish when they saw your supply running low. Everything we had was top notch. The grilled squid, clam strips, grilled lobster and lobster rolls. My absolute favorite now-I-can-die-happy moment was when I opened the lobster heads to discover a bounty of lobster roe and tomalley. So buttery, rich and delicious. I was in heaven and cleaned them out! We were so full that there was no room for the tempting dessert menu. My husband ordered us a hot toddy to share. It was delicious but quite potent! Gloucester, especially after the rain, is such a dreamy spot. We will definitely return and we'd definitely return here. read more

I am not one to post critical reviews but I feel compelled to present what happened when we went to the Gloucester House. Our treatment by just about every member of this establishment was abominable. If I could give a no stars rating to this restaurant I would. Today my family attended The Gloucester House with a friend (total of 6 people) and were KICKED OUT of the restaurant. To start, my family was told they could not be seated while I was parking (it was raining so I dropped them off). Despite this slight inconvenience, we sat down at our table and were introduced to our waiter Hayley. When we proceeded to order appetizers we were told that they were out of the Lobster Ragoons so We ordered a different appetizer. When she returned to take our entrée order we attempted to order clams but she told us they were out of clams because they had a busy weekend. My wife ordered haddock but then she told us they were out of asparagus so they were not serving the Haddock. We were disappointed and I told her that they might want to consider telling people what they were out of early in the dining experience, rather than making us sit there for 1/2 an hour and only telling us when we attempted to order the item. She claimed that there were no clams because the restaurant had been busy that weekend. I then walked away from the table, and called another restaurant to see if they have clams, which they did. Hayley then came back and had a horrible attitude with us. After our conversation, the Manger came by to defend the waiter, saying that our waiter had cried due to our interaction. She said that the clams were ACTUALLY not available due to red tide. I apologized for the way I had spoken to her. The manger was rude to us and NEVER apologized once. I was also surprised that the manager then inappropriately confronted me on calling another restaurant. We were then given another waiter Kara, who was pleasant and turned our mood around. We received our food then, and were surprised to find that our plates included clams and haddock with asparagus!! The Manager then returned. We expressed our confusion on receiving clams that we were told were not available due to RED TIDE. She didn't address our concern and continued to defend Hayley. She ending the interaction by aggressively walking away while I was still speaking to her. The manger was rude to us and still NEVER apologized. While finishing our meal, the owner of The Gloucester house spoke with us. He approached our table, put one of his hands on my son's shoulder and one on our friends shoulder, and said, "Lady's and gentleman, I am the person who's either going to explain what has happened or I'm going to throw you out. Who is the man who was rude to my waitress?" I then simply said, "I was not that rude to her." And he followed up with, "YOU'RE AN ASSHOLE." The owner of the restaurant would not listen to anything I had to say. Apparently the customer is always right at this establishment. We were all astonished and walked out before the situation escalated any farther. The owner told him to meet us in the front to give us his business card. As we walked out, the rest of the wait staff continued to accuse us of being "the rudest person we have met all weekend." We waited for the owner's business card, yet he never reappeared. Extremely disrespectful facility and staff, clearly going downhill. read more

I'm hesitant if I should give this two or three stars. First of all, considering that they have a good location, their outside seating was very limited. The oysters we got were good but thinking that its just wellfleet, I feel like I could just get this somewhere else at a much cheaper price. The calamari was nothing special. Ah, the affectionately named "GloHo," or more like "Glory Hole," because your gonna feel like you've been shafted up the wazoo and the wallet if you come here. Where, if you're a tourist, you're greeted by a hostile hostess, served by indifferent waitrons and you're paying for food that's maybe one or two steps above the institutionalized slop that's reheated and microwaved at your local nursing home. Long wait to get seated -- no one was at the front, and when there finally was, I just got stared at without a hello. The food came quickly and was super hot as though everything had just been microwaved. I ordered broccoli as a side and was given green beans without being told that they had switched the veg. The rice pilaf was crunchy. ... Crunchy. Like, I'm still digging rice out of my teeth where it got jammed down to the gums because it was that hard. This is a solid 2.0. I'm allergic to shellfish - yes i get this is a shellfish resturant but when you have out of town visitors. . . I swear I'll never go back. I asked the server if they have a non-shellfish menu (it makes it easier, some places do). Thet don't. It became compounded when I asked if all the items (ie non-shellfish) were fried in the same oil as the shellfish. She said they were: here is the problem, now the chicken, fries, calamari, fish are out. I then asked if there was a dedicated grill: nope. more chicken, burgers, steak out. I'm down to 3 types of salad: greek, house and ceasar. Seriously? These are my option for lunch? Look, I get you are a seafood house but many people don't eat shellfish one fry basket or one grill that you *don't* put shellfish on? Ok, let's move onto the salad. For $12.50, I got lettuce drenched in what I swear was bottled salad dressing. It wasn't a big bowl, it was a moderate sized salad that I paid about $4 too much for . . . .the lettuce hadn't been dried so the water mixed with the doused dressing. I wasn't amused. The server was probably the most disinterested person around. She brought the check promptly after we finished: the thing is? 2 of us wanted coffee and one of us wanted dessert: seems to me that could have been a few more bucks to her tip. We were constantly having to flag her down for things like water, bread, butter. It wasn't that busy, there was enough staff. My mom intially asked about the lobster: $32 for a 1.5lb lobster: hey, that's great but at the warehouse next door? they are $6.95/lb. That is a markup! Needless to say, she took a pass. Maybe this place is great for functions: but we all left feeling meh. The food wasn't horrific, but the lack of innovation (with a price tag to indicate innovation), lack of ability to accomidate an allergy and having exactly 1 non-shellfish item coupled with inattentive service makes it worth noting not to go back. Again, if you love seafood and everybody in your party does, this might work. But it's not a place for non seafood lovers. It's a shame: the location is fantastic. read more

Attention, only my third 5 star review in 60 reviews. I have a rule if it's the best thing you've ever eaten 5 stars. 4 of us went last night. Place was full but nobody was at bar. I think you get better service at the bar anyways. Bartender told me the oysters were big and meaty. We got a dozen. Everyone ordered there food and drink. Oysters came out and they were big ones. Then my friend gave me the biggest oyster I have eaten. Not the shell but the oyster was the size of a fried egg . All the food was great. Our server Lily and her brother were great! The space was awesome with lots of historical maritime pictures. Hope to go back to try more seafood. read more

This place is for the tour buses. The food is nothing special and meager and the prices are above average, as you'd expect of a tired old-school seaside restaurant. They were out of steamers when we arrived and apparently the chef is unaware that mussels that don't open after cooking started as dead mussels. I put them on a plate for the waitress to see. Not that there were many mussels. My friends had seafood dinners that reminded me of Howard Johnson's---but with higher prices. You can do better. read more

The atmosphere is obviously suited to match such patrons. The food is WAY overpriced and if you don't like seafood (like me), you're pretty much out of luck. I counted 4 non-seafood items, and almost all of them were over $15.00. I got the steaktips and could easily have eaten them all and gotten a dessert afterwards. Well cooked, to be sure, but there was nothing special about it. The water view isn't worth it folks...go downtown to eat, where there are much better establishments. My fish was cooked to perfection and the mango apple salsa they had was delicious!! Customer service was great, our waiter was very attentive and they even had a gluten free and vegan menu! Ended up here on a tour bus from Illinois. The place was crowded because there were three bus loads of us. The owner tended to us personally. I figured we in for a rough. Time of it. He handled us perfectly. Gave great deals on the lobster and promised the best Haddock we ever had. He didn't lie. The fish was soooo Damned good. On top of that the entire time he sat on a stool and entertained us with stories of the area and people living there. It was so interesting I was afraid to get our food because I didn't want him to stop talking. Everyone, probably over 100 of us thought our experience was fantastic. Folks still talking about it today at breakfast. If you're in he area don't miss this place, and if you've never had lobster before he took the time to demonstrate on a fresh cooked one how to handle and eat it. The staff was friendly no wait on a Saturday afternoon and the food was fresh and delicious. I had a cup of clam chowder perfectly thick with bacon pieces in it. For my entree the baked haddock fries and green beans. The fish was cooked perfectly the green beans nice and fresh and the French fries crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. Everything tasted like it was made from scratch that day. It came with cran apple relish on the side which was to die for I could eat a bowl of that! Not to mention the beautiful view of the ocean. After spending a day whale-watching, we were famished. Gloucester House is right on the pier where our boat docked, so we decided to try it. It was a perfect end to a perfect day. They sat us in the covered porch room, which is right on the water, so we enjoyed all the sounds of the water and seagulls flying by. The bacon-wrapped scallops were awesome (my first time trying sea scallops...YUM). My husband's lobster pie was soo buttery and rich, but amazing. My lobster roll was a bit bland. My boss had raved about the lobster rolls in New England, but this one didn't have a ton of flavor. The lobster meat was very good though. I wish I didn't live so far away, in Chicago, because I miss all the fresh New England seafood!! If I make it back to Gloucester, we will definitely be back. read more

The reviews that say the hostess is rude are spot on. There is no warmth when you walk in this place. And it would be one thing if the food was outstanding but it is absolutely not. My clam strip dinner was lukewarm upon arrival. I am not one to send food back but I was really looking forward to some good clam strips, so I told our waitress they were cold. The one piece I did eat was vey rubbery and gritty. When my second dish arrived, it was piping hot, however, still just as tough. I ate my lukewarm French fries because I was starving. My husband and brother in law got the fried seafood platter "special" and felt that the calamari and clam strips were cold and rubbery too. I feel like it's the high season in Gloucester so they just aren't trying too hard. They're going to make money no matter what. But not from me. I won't be back. read more

Table for 5 on Saturday afternoon sat out on the deck perfect weather to eat out. We ordered apps. Steamers, 1/2 dozen oysters, & o-rings. My son had calamari dinner, my girls spilt a garden salad & clam chowder, my wife had the lobster salad roll that was HUGE, and for myself I had the Haddock Oscar so delicious I just wish that portion was bigger. Been here a few times. We usually sit outside where you can watch the ships and people waiting in line for whale watch tours. It's nice. We mainly come here for the scenery. They serve you complementary cornbread and they're delicious -- moist and sweet. Fish and chips are pretty good too. Generously portioned. They offer raw oysters, but they come in this tray that tips the oysters off its balance leaking out the delicious briney juice! Wish they would just serve it on a bed of ice like they do everywhere else. We like coming here and we'll be back again. read more

Sorry, I have to be honest. Ambiance: It's been about 20 years since I have eaten here and the decor and ceiling tiles were probably the same actual items as they were today. The ceiling tiles were brown and discolored in a bunch of places with water stains all over and there were quite a few flies buzzing around. Food: They start you off with cornbread, which I like usually. It was mediocre tasting at best and a little dry. The appetizers were next. Fried Calamari was excellent I will say. Not over breaded or chewy, just right! I also had a crock of clam chowder, a New England staple. Well I was let down by the Gloucester House's version. It was pretty runny and although it had a good amount of clams and potatoes, it had a weird flavor to it. Not sweet, but not salty, something else. The main course now, a lobster pie for me and a lobster roll for my wife. The lobster pie was very dry and I had to drown it in butter to give it flavor. Tiny bits of lobster meat and not much of it I thought. Was disappointed for sure. My wife picked the lobster out of her lobster roll and said the same, bland. The prices: Way too expensive for the quality of food received. $22 for the lobster pie, $18 for the lobster roll, $8 for the chowder, $16 for the calamari and 3 cokes came out to $76 and change, OUCH! After the tip was $86. Not the waitresses fault, although she did seem to make us wait an eternity between the appetizers and the main course. It was 1:00pm, prime lunch time and the place was not that busy and pretty empty, which should have been a giveaway. Bottom line, it will probably be another 20 years before I return here to eat. It wasn't so much the prices. You have to expect to pay that in a tourist town. It was the mediocre quality of the food in a town famous for seafood! The food was good but I felt like I was eating in a tourist trap. I would call this restaurant " gourmet fast food". We both had the baked haddock and it was fresh and good. Our problem was that is was delivered like 30seconds after we finished our chowder. There is no way they could have baked our haddock after we placed our order. They must have some just sitting there ready to serve. We had no timer to enjoy our cocktails as the food was rushed out. I would suggest you skip this place unless you are in a big hurry to eat and run. Food was good, ambience was OK, but please let me finish my cocktail before you rush the food out. I take my parents here for seafoody goodness that's not as expensive as, say, Legal, and has a little more character as well. They're big fans, and love eating out on the deck in the summer, smell of the wharves and all (it wasn't noticeable when we went, actually, but it was high tide). Last time I went, there was nothing non-seafood on the menu that I liked, so they made me a special dish. I'll probably go next time I'm in Gloucester. Today was the 1st time ever visiting this restaurant. I felt the menu was very limited and the service horrible. We watched a full bar area receive service while we waited 25 minutes for an app and 50 minutes for our basic meals while they were not completely booked. We will never return food was fair. I dont have too much to base my opinion on but i will give you the impression i got. We went in for dinner on a Sunday evening. Parking was pretty full but we found a spot. There was a "short" wait and we were given a light up lobster to be called when our table is ready. After checking out the place a little (menu looks ok, they had specials, some of which were already gone and crossed off, it is pretty dark and not fun inside, outdoor seating was limited but the bathroom was clean and user friendly) we let the hostess know we were going to wait out side for a few minutes and asked about how long the wait would be like 15? She responded "atleast 45"!... So as im sure you can guess we did not stay to eat. Did not seem like the type of atmosphere that we would wait 45 minutes in a parking lot to eat at. I heard some hype about this place so I had high expectations. After a lovely time in Gloucester on the water I decided to check it out. Sadly, I was disappointed from the start...although the chocolate martini sampler was pretty cool I'll admit that. My wife got a lobster roll for $24.00 and it was the absolute most pathetic lobster roll imaginable - a large hotdog roll with a ton of lettuce on the bottom and about 2-3 ounces of lobster meat on top. For lack of a better term, this was thievery. My son got the fried calamari and I got the fired haddock - in both cases the batter was a bland as could be. The total bill for the three of us was close to ninety dollars, and neither of us had an alcoholic beverage - and none of us had a decent meal. This place is a rip-off. My son said it best when he said he would have preferred it if we went to McDonalds and ordered filet-o-fishes. I wish we did too. read more
