We had heard this was a solid spot for lunch so on our drive through the area popped in, and it really was. The menu has SO many options I was honestly a bit overwhelmed at first. The fact that they offer half sandwich options at exactly half the price of a full is CLUTCH and not something I'd seen before. We opted for the Phil & Ched's Excellent Adventure & Italian Yardbird. The former was pretty good. Taste overall was mostly broiled onions/peppers, which was a skosh of a letdown and I do wish the meat was cut into smaller pieces as I felt it was a little difficult to eat physically. The Yardbird I much preferred. I was worried this would be too Alfredo-forward, and it really wasn't. This bread I preferred. The mac&cheese was interesting, I wasn't expecting the chips that came on top but I certainly didn't mind them? The staff was super friendly and gave our dogs a water bowl unprompted. First time visiting this venue on a Friday for late lunch. Prices are reasonable for their 1/2 sandwiches on the menu and the portion was "just right" for me. I was concerned I did not order a side / chips & glad I did not allow my eyes to be bigger than my appetite. Outdoor dining area has vibrant & unique paint murals, which makes for a great conversation starter. I ordered All Up In Your Grill 1/2 sandwich without pickles. Provel, mozzarella, white cheddar, and Gouda all melted together gave me that tangy, smoky, and gooey cheese with the tomato and avocado spread on the garlic buttered sourdough. Employees were friendly and made sure our orders were accurate, especially since I asked not only for modifications for my sandwich but also for the Reuben I ordered to go for my husband. In preparing for our STL trip, I learned there are MANY legit AF sandwich shops. Unfortunately, we didn't have enough time to them all, but are so happy to have included The Gramophone as our first stop to fill our bellies before wandering around the Botanical Gardens. It was a short walk from the MetroLink. We looked over the menus and ordered at the bar then sat and eagerly awaited our lunch. We were told it would be ~30-35 minutes which was fine as we were in no rush. There was plenty of seating inside and outside despite a constant flow of customers. Loved that they had live music during the day to entertain as well! They also had a selection of board games and a Foo Fighters pinball machine which was cool. Their sandwiches were delicious and very filling! I couldn't imagine eating a whole one myself! I was excited for the cup of Popper Soup but TBH it was more like a thick cream cheese "soup" with a hint of jalapeño (don't be fooled though, I ate it all). I also enjoyed the Riplet chips (new to me as they don't have these in California). After the messy lunch, I had to wash my hands in the bathroom which was very clean. Believe the hype. Foodwise: I ordered a salad added smoked salmon with Italian dressing and macaroni and cheese. Unfortunately, I have 0 photos. My salad though, perfect. The Italian dressing is kind of creamy as opposed to vinagrete which was surprising, but when paired with the smoked salmon, it was a great combo. The mac and cheese you ask? Topped with Red Hot Riplets. I was also a little skeptical of this at first, I definitely thought they were hiding lack of flavor in the cheese, but I am a firm believer that this mac and cheese would be fantastic without the Riplets. That being said, don't take them off though, they are great. Service, above 10. I felt welcomed as soon as the door closed behind me, the bar tender could feel my lost vibes and rescued me. The best sandwiches in town! This is our go to place when visitors come and we want to show off St. Louis. The Danimal is a favorite but they are all good. Solid beer menu, nice patio area, and super friendly staff are just the cherry on top of the amazing generously portioned sammies. Yelp was just prompting me to post. I have been to gramophone dozens of times. I wish I could eat it everyday. I have tried most items on the menu and each is better than the next. The Alcatraz is my favorite. You can get it with turkey and roast beef or just turkey, etc. It's spectacular. As is the Bufalo soldier. My best friend's favorite is Mississippi Nights. One thing I do recommend is ordering ahead of time online to avoid lines. Then you can just walk straight in and straight to the pick up window towards the kitchen. There is three parking in front of the building and also a parking lot to the side of the building. On busy nights, parking can be tough. This place is a local favorite, be ready for lines. But it is so worth it. They do also serve alcohol as well. read more

So when multiple people implored me to get "the best sandwich I'll ever have" at this unassuming joint in the Grove, I thought "big whoop!" and ignored them. It is not apparent online, but there are indeed vegetarian-specific sandwiches on the paper menu. I got the Mushroom Mississippi Nights. You can also sub mushrooms for the meat in any sandwich, but I'm glad they had some veg options listed. I have not been able to stop thinking about the Mushroom Mississippi Nights. I am lying awake in bed dreaming of it. Between the perfect baguette, meaty crispy mushrooms, fresh crunchy vegetables, and tangy mayo sauce, I was on a ride I couldn't stop. I wolfed that sandwich down with a vengeance and was seriously bummed when it was over. My mom got a beef sandwich with au jus that she also really enjoyed. I have tried a handful of their sandwiches now, but today I got The Jive & customized it by adding their "Horsey Blue" sauce. Such a good decision. Not too horseradish-y, honestly it'll be a necessity for me here on in. A must-have for blue cheese lovers like myself. Next time I'm there I plan on getting the Buffalo Soldier with that sauce added to it. The side salad would be better if it was more romaine and less iceberg IMO. I was completely blown away and never saw it coming. The Gramophone's sandwiches are some of the best I've had in my life. The location is The Grove neighborhood of Saint Louis. Parking is by nearby paid lot, or off street paid meter. The day I parked the lot had security. Signage is good. My son and I arrived on a weekday around 11:15 to a small line. But later a line to the door after we ordered at the bar. Paper menus are plentiful. There is a lot to choose from on the menu, so knowing the selections in advance is a good idea. You can go to their website. The tap beer variety is very large with locals. They also have local fountain sodas. Staff were friendly and helpful on confirming choices. I went with a roast beef, can't recall its name. Prices seem fair with today's pricing. You can tip on the machine. Gramophone is in an old three story building that's in great condition. The atmosphere is ideal, like saloon. High ceilings, wood floors, bar and even live music. Decor is music related. They have a pinball machine in a corner. Patio seating is in the rear. My son and I split lunch they are large. We absolutely loved our hot roast beef and cheese sandwich. I have no idea how it taste so good, but it's not ordinary by any stretch. Sitting in a car for hours on end driving from Chicago to Southern California works up quite an appetite! We were passing through Saint Louis and had the good fortune to stop at The Gramophone for lunch. The culinary fates were shining on us that day! We studied the menu and found an array of fanciful options. We wish we lived in the area so that we could return again and again to try more of the listed temptations. On this visit we ordered the All Up In Your Grill and the South Austin Melt. WOW! Both were fantastic choices. The All Up in Your Grill was a cheese lovers fantasy come to life. It included generous amounts of provel, mozzarella, white cheddar, and gouda all melted together with tomato, pickles, and avocado spread served on a seasoned buttered sourdough. This was a gooey delicious cheese festival! The South Austin melt was also superb. It included a delightful combination of roasted turkey, bacon, pepper jack cheese, and Boss sauce served on ciabatta and panini pressed. We decided to give the Gramophone a try. We'd been here years ago before their sandwich program was so well renowned. The late night bites scene here captures the tough, gritty, soulfully spunky, diverse spirit of St. Louis so well. I can't believe it's taken us so long to come back. I ordered their most famous sandwich, the Mississippi Nights Club. Boy was it tasty. It hit the spot. There were just the right amount of flavorful fillings and the bread was fantastic. Nah. Nope. I absolutely fail to understand the appeal of this place. My half Alcatraz was not good. It fell apart and was just a gooey mess of some barely discernible ingredients. I couldn't really eat it with my hands, and its really sort of bland. Yeah this is a "panini" but its really just a half assed patty melt. The salad would have been acceptable but for the sweet mustard vinaigrette, which I suppose I wasn't expecting, I've never encountered a salad dressing thats "mustard" or "vinaigrette" thats sweet. Except maybe in St. Louis, Ok i guess I seriously underestimated just how St. Louis this establishment is and in not a good way. I've heard about this place a lot, and it's been very hyped up, but to me it didn't really live up to the hype. I got the Jive, and it got really soggy really fast. The taste was good but nothing crazy. There was not a lot of meat on it which was disappointing for a longer sandwich, especially for it being $17 which was too pricey for the quantity and quality given. It also took ~25 minutes to get sandwiches around 11:30 on a Tuesday which was a long time compared to other places and even full service restaurants. I am willing to go back and try a different sandwich and maybe just get a half size for the price to be fair, but this doesn't top my other favorite sandwich places so far. 3.5/5 for me personally. read more
