I've lived near the Hill all my life, but I've never been to Amighttis. We decided to give it a try tonight. I used to shop at the old Hanneke hardware store and wanted to see what it looked like now as a restaurant. It was nicely decorated, but a little generic. I had had a really good sandwich earlier in the day, so I decided to try the Tortellini (meat). It was OK, but for $14 I was expecting a larger portion. It didn't have a lot of flavor for a restaurant on the Hill. My wife got their signature sandwich and it was a little embarrassing. It was on chewy bread with very little meat and lettuce. They were out of a lot of things- cream for Cannolis, meatballs, turkey, several sodas. This was the day before the Fourth of July, so maybe that explains that though. I doubt that we'll be back. There are too many other great places to eat on the Hill.

I went here to get their bagels. This place has different variety of bagels. I ended up getting their blueberry, garlic, cinnamon raisin and jalapeños and cheddar. The dills cream cheese is interesting. There were not as many staff here so it did take sometimes to get the bagels. Parking was street parking.

Was in town for an afternoon. On the recommendation of, and accompanied by, a world traveler with a proclivity for, I'll be nice and call it "safe" food (not one to trip the culinary life fantastic and push boundaries or get adventurous), made our way to this well run, spacious establishment. The lady behind the counter was grandmotherly in her insistence to try more than merely a sandwich (she stopped short of physically escorting me to the cheesecake area near the back, but I did, despite not wanting cheesecake for lunch, as an alms for being an out-of-towner, venture round the back). I admired her salesmanship, if not her persistence. Ordering was easy, they have a special sandwich, I'm getting the special sandwich. Despite the word "special" being thrown around, and not to blast an institution (if that's what Amighetti's is) but the sandwich was right up the guy who's rec we ventured in upon's alley. It was ok, mediocre, safe. The bread almost annoyingly flaky. The meat was pretty well covered up by the bread. Eating it was, well, a chore that left a mess of flaky crumbs as though the sandwich had exploded and for very little tastebud reward. This doesn't happen often, but a quarter of it went uneaten and not taken for later. The taste was kind of muted. Nothing popped. The St. Louis standard I'm measuring it by, and not to give the competition a nod, was far superior. And sure, that joint (Gramophone) offers an Italian amongst many others, but Amighetti's is more for the institution than the cuisine.

Amighettis catered an event I went to Friday night and I was a little worried based off of some of these Yelp reviews, but I thought the sandwich was fresh and delicious! The event had 4 types of sandwiches to choose from that were cut into thirds (meatball, turkey, salami, & veggie) along with a couple of pans of salad. The sandwich had two well seasoned meatballs with enough sauce & cheese to make it a bit messy but very flavorful. I thought the bread was fresh and yummy. Salad with dressing lacked a little pizzazz but I'm sure it would have been much better tossed in the dressing - totally understand why they didnt coat the salad in dressing since it was for a group. Would def be happy to eat here again.

Traveling bands always ask, where's a good place for toasted Ravs? People often say, everywhere. The correct answer is Amighettis. This casual dine in or take out place is my preferred choice for easy access, unassuming, affordable, good Italian lunch (and dinner). Plenty of street parking around the neighborhood and you don't have to fight with traffic as you would closer to center of the hill. I can't begin to list the menu (long), so you'll just have to go try them for yourselves.

We are trying to venture out and try restaurants that we haven't tried yet. I have always heard wonderful things about Amighettis so we decided why not give it a try at it's newer location. They are located in the old Hanneke Hardware building and did a great job on restoring it for a restaurant. When we walked the tables were all empty, which should've been a pretty good sign for us. As we had not been there, we weren't sure really what to eat. Reading through the menu I saw 'the sandwich that made us famous' so I thought, why not? I ordered the Amighettis Special. When they brought it to the table, I really didn't see anything too special about it. It had very little sauce on it actually very little of anything on it. When I got home later, I was looking at an article from feast magazine about it and that sandwich looked pretty good, which was supposed to be mine. Clearly mine was not made just like this one. I had no pickles and no pepperconcinis on mine as I did inspected every layer of mine to see what was on it. It definitely could have used more of everything on it for their special famous sandwich. Especially the famous sauce. They were out of a lot of things no meatballs, no cannoli filling and a few other food items. Went over to the soda fountain which I really appreciated they had both Coke and Pepsi product, but as we started filling our soda cups, a lot of them ran clear and they were out of the sodas. Took a couple of tries to find one that actually worked. Our first experience here did not go quite as we had hoped. For a restaurant that is on The Hill you certainly expect it to be exceptional or at least pretty good.

Egg & Cheese on Salt Bagel

My review is for the bagels. I ordered an egg & cheese sandwich and 2 other bagels. The sandwich was decent but short on flavor. There was some toast on the bagel so I guess that helped it. The other 2 bagels were dismal and I couldn't eat them. No crust, no chew, too puffy, etc. They were bread not bagels. I could have possibly eaten them if they were scooped out and toasted but 1. I don't think anyone here knows what that is and 2. You shouldn't have to do that to a fresh bagel. A fresh bagel has a crisp exterior and a dense chewy interior. This isn't it! I ate at C and B Boiled Bagels when it was open and these do not taste like those or any other bagel.

Nice place and good food this woman is however a little bitter and rude.

This was our first visit to this location so we were excited to try it. While ordering, we encountered a rude employee, Pam. Our request for a side of pasta was rudely denied without explanation or kindness. We were taken back at the lack of courtesy. Despite her behavior, the food was good and the environment was clean. We'll be back but hope to have a better experience.

Great lunch spot! Tons of sandwiches and salad options. They even have all of Hanks Cheesecakes flavors- what a treat. Tried the large Amighettis special salad with grilled chicken and it was delicious. The dressing is phenomenal. My husband tried the meatball sub and loved it. Both super fresh and came out quick. We got Oreo cheesecake to top it off and it did not disappoint. 10/10. We will be back!

    Wet toasted bagel

The worst deli on the hill. Just buy the sauce and add it to a sandwich from Southwest or Eovaldis - that's the best move IMO. They stopped making their own bread, and the new stuff is Fazio's standard. This means a softer, chewier, smushier bread. Not bad, but one less reason to come here. Totally inconsistent from one item to the next. Hot items are usually over cooked. Seems like they use less meat on the special than they use to too. Meatballs are more often golf balls than anything. Picked up twice, ordered was wrong both times. They serve bread co style bagels too, dunno why. Union is a real bagel, but these do in a pinch. Bagel sandwiches are one overcooked egg with cheese toasted to the point of no identifiable taste with a heaping hot portion of salty deli meat. No garlic butter on the bread, just meat sweat and steam. I grew up on Amighetti's, but this is not the quality that I - my brother, or my father remember. I think this is likely a combo of poor menu planning for the kitchen, lack of training, and corner cutting to maintain profit. It's the combo that kills this place for me, one thing wrong is ok but 2 or 3 every time is too much.

Half size Amighetti Special and toasted beef ravioli.

It was our first trip to St.Louis and we decided to drive up to "The Hill" for an Italian lunch. We happened upon Amighettis and it did not disappoint! Toasted ravioli was yummy and the accompanying sauce presumably the same sauce on my chicken parm sandwich was very good (flavor, texture and ratio). My husband had their Special which he enjoyed thoroughly. Portion sizes were generous and the bread lived up to the hype. What we enjoyed equally to the food was the welcoming and friendly staff. A+ for customer service. The decor was tasteful and charming, complementing the upcycled neighborhood building and space well. We were too stuffed for cheesecake, but they all looked amazing.

Amighetti Special (w/o tomato or pickle)

I've been to this place and always liked it. It has come back to The Hill (right close, practically The Hill), and now in the old hardware store. I could give the place 5 stars...and maybe I will the next time, as I try more things...but I try and (not) be too loose with my 5-star ratings. The thing about this place: They use a different sub sauce....but dang is it great! A mayo base...but then...has dill and mustard...who knows what else...is it killer! Bread is quite good...fresh tasting meats. This place is a winner....get there...

Great place for lunch or dinner. I have many wonderful memories of eating an Amighetti's sandwich with friends and families for important life events. This was our first time trying this newly opened location. We are very glad to welcome them back to the city! The sandwich and pasta selection options are as we recall. My husband likes the Special Sandwich. I opted for pasta. Both were good. The bread seems not as crunchy or chewy as we recall, but still very good. I enjoyed a salad with my lunch that had a generous amount of cheese and some olives and artichoke hearts which were tasty. Big change is that Hanks Cheesecake is available for dessert in addition to cookies and cannolis. Street parking. Large bathrooms but there is a raised threshold which would be difficult to negotiate with a wheeled device. There is a ramp to the side door.

Is this the place to get the true, original Amighetti's Special?

Of course. It is available at any of our locations, and also at many off-premises events if you order catering or catch our mobile team (for example, at the balloon glow in Forest park, or Twilight Thursdays at the Missouri History Museum).

My wife had the Manicotti and I had the Chicken Lemonata. So great. The bottle of the house Gitto's Red was the perfect wine as well. The vibe inside was warm, cozy, and sophisticated. There is also a small patio area that seemed to have a much different vibe. We were seated in a busy area of the restaurant, so there was frequent traffic passing by our table, which took away from the vibe a bit. It didn't bother us but I can see how it could bother others. Everyone we interacted with from the hostess to our waiter Brian and the other servers passing by our table, was friendly and welcoming. The manager even stopped to chat with us while we waited for our Uber. Now for the food, we started with the toasted ravioli we had heard so much about and it was good. For the main dish, we went with the lobster spaghetti which was one of the day's specials. The portion size was generous making it the perfect dish to share with my son. The dish was filled with lobster, shrimp, and other seafood, all tossed in a rich buttery sauce. We both really enjoyed it. Even though we were full from dinner, we didn't want to leave without trying dessert so we took a slice of carrot cake back to the hotel. It made a great late night snack. The cake was moist and the cream cheese icing was delicious. Overall, this is a nice spot for an Italian dinner.

The staff super super friendly and accommodating. As for the food, it was solid Italian but I wouldn't call it "authentic", but more Americanized Italian fare (albeit the toasted raviolis were as good as advertised). They've surely been impacted by the economy and many of the changes are due to that, such as smaller portions for higher prices - RIP free pasta to take home. I adored the crisp on the outside, soft on the inside pillowy loaf you would get along with olive oil, Parmesan and fresh cracked pepper in the past. I was surprised to see rolls and butter brought to our table as the bread service. I gave this new roll a chance but it was overly salty and not very good.
