I have never had a bad time at the Grapevine. The vibe is good, the people are usually friendly and the drinks are tasty and cheap. The inside is small and made even smaller by a pool table they I still wonder how they maneuvered it inside. Walking outside to the back patio somehow reminded me of walking out onto a friend's patio who's parents were very much into the 60's. The upstairs patio is a complete relax zone. Unfortunately the Grapevine only has two unisex bathrooms, so for the most part the line is long. Definitely go before you think you might actually have to go because by the time you're in the front of the line you will need to go. The cool thing though, is once you get in there's plenty of graffiti to read over, but read quickly because they will be people growing more and more angry by each passing minute you're in there. Another great perk is if by any chance you end up hanging out with someone you don't particularly want to be seen with, this is the perfect place to take them. It's lowly lit, not creepy, but in a chill type of way, so no one REALLY sees you. I know that sounds bad, but hey every city has one, probably more than one and it can happen on occasion. I LOVE this place! It was the first bar that I went to when I turned 21, and I've been coming back ever since! There is a GREAT group of people here. I love the little sitting area inside with the mismatched couches and chairs and vintage hanging lamps. I love the outside patio and the fact that there is a basketball hoop. They have great drink specials and a good jukebox! I love their free little bbq's for holidays. They started serving food regularly now. It's available for order right behind the basketball court. Also THANK YOU for adding restrooms outside! That line on the inside used to get really crowded. :) In my opinion, this is the best bar in Dallas. It's a wonderful place to hang with friends, meet new friends, and people watch. The crowd is a good mixture of people and everyone is very chill and accepting. The bar tender here was awesome and greeted us as soon as the door was opened. My first drink was a frozen Bellini, I thought it was Pomegranate, but my hubby says he doesn't think so. It was the fuchsia colored one, and did not taste peachy. Well not the fruit anyhow. It was peachy keen with me though! ;) The diversity and the friendliness of the crowd was a nice change from some of the other bars around town. I LOVE DIVE BARS & this is a cute little dive bar with a rooftop patio and a basketball court- what other dive bars can say that!?!? Well, the night we were bar hopping, we happened upon this tiny building that said the Grapevine on it. And we proceeded to drink and have fun! It's dark, it's "cozy," it's a dive bar. The deck area is awesome if you can fit in (it was a tad busy). It's probably one of the most unique bars we've been to in a while. I can't exactly put my finger on it, but you'll have to come try it out for yourself! Just don't miss it... it's a little red building with a neon sign... that's it. Nothing flashy, no crazy signs, no stupid people outside. Just people having fun. I suppose it's the way a bar was meant to be? But I wasn't around when bars were first discovered, so... there's that. Anywho, Sun-Tues happy hours until close (which is AWESOME!), other drink specials, and just an all around fun environment. Did you know in Texas you could smoke in bars? I didn't... Once I found out, I smoked like a fiend for the rest of the night. The smoke did get to be a little much even for me, I have an appreciation for being able to sit and drink and smoke a cigarette, but I don't really mind going outside to smoke... That having been said. I liked this place a lot - I went for Halloween this year - and though it was a bit crazy (due to the holiday/esp since it fell on the Friday) in here I was presently surprised that I liked almost every last bit of the place. It's a hole-in-the wall. Which has it's ups and downs, perhaps it has a sorted past, but don't we all. This also means that not only will the bartenders have a personality, but they had a connection to not only the regulars, but the customer. Period. I like that. I was NOT DD for Halloween this year, so I enjoyed several tasty mixed drinks, and a few shots (the number escapes me) and though I got passed by on alot of the rounds, I think between the three tabs we only almost hit 80 bucks for all of us to drink, plus tip. Wow. Not in Boston, no way. I appreciate the never ending toilet paper deal in the bathroom. Wondered why they hadn't added a bathroom out back, also wondered why the majority of the patrons who seemed familiar with the place crowded around the bathroom doors so you couldn't tell the line from the drinkers. Also, the majority of the people were guys - why didn't they go use the port-a-potties? Seems logical to me... The crowd here is unbelievable to take in. From all walks of life - though that in of it's self isn't a new theme at a bar for me, it's never really been this aggressively flamboyant in nature. It makes me wonder what we regulars at home look like to an outsider... One things for sure, I want to go back but in the meantime will be petitioning for a jukebox at my neighborhood bar. read more

Alright, so I know I post about bars a lot...but let's face it when you are 23 and gay in Dallas you...drink. I went last night with a date after dinner and was very impressed. There is a freaking basketball court...how amazing is that?! The drinks were great, I had vodka cranberries for the evening and my date enjoyed his gin and diet 7. It was a Tuesday night and well drinks were $2.00...I'm not sure what other specials run throughout the week but to go to a bar and only have a $18.00 tab for a couple hours and two people is GREAT! The people are as mixed as the decor...you have businesspeople, emo kids, scensters, society women, gays, straights, and anything else. The outdoor bathrooms were cool and the basketball court is genius! All in all this is now my favorite bar...off the strip (and I live next door to one...so that is saying a lot!). read more

The peach everclear bellini's are SO yummy. We go here specifically for them! Sunday, Monday and Tuesdays are happy hour all day. The bellini goes for $3.00 during happy hour. These are the kind of drinks where you don't even realize what you're getting yourself into. Great vibe to this place. It's got some different seating areas. There's cozy chairs in different colors and patterns. There's a pool table in one room. Out back they have a basketball hoop and just recently they've added a ping pong table. There's a juke box. We always have great conversations with all different kinds of people when we go. It's a great place to relax and have drinks with no "hoighty toighty" - ness attached. read more

One of my FAVORITE bars in the Dallas area! My friend recommended this bar to me and since then it has been our "go to" bar to end our weekend nights! It is not that far of a walk from the Oaklawn strip of bars and clubs but the location is a little isolated. You wouldn't expect it to be as big as it is inside upon looking at it either. Walking inside you might get the feeling that the place needs a little bit of cleaning, and the furniture looks a little cluttered and random and maybe a little run down. However, I believe that is the look they are going for and you learn to love it for what it is! The place has character! The bartenders are nice and social when they can be (they place draws quite a crowd some nights). They have your average drinks, I usually get the Texas Long Island (don't judge me!), draft beers, bottled beers, liquor shots, but they are also open to whatever floats your mixed liquor drink boat! But enough about the bar at the entrance! They have a bar in the back patio as well! There are many small round tables under the covered bar patio that you and your significant other can sit and bond at, and adjacent to the area they have big wooden round tables where you and your big college group of friends can be loud and obnoxious at. THEY HAVE A BASKETBALL COURT!!!!! Ok, so maybe not a court exactly, but they have a basketball net next to those tables that is open to anyone. And I mean anyone!!! Seriously, I've played with so many random drunk strangers it's definitely a fun and interesting experience. Alright so I mentioned before that the place draws quite a crowd some nights, and I know what some you must be thinking. What if I don't like large noisy crowds!? Well don't worry because right above the covered patio there's an upstairs patio!!!!! It's much more private and personal where the music is softer and pretty strings of light hang above the area. Great drink specials Sundays through Tuesdays. We go here weekly for the drink specials, great music and low-key atmosphere. Located in the original Herrera's building on Maple, this little dive has a ton of personality. Go inside and find dimly lit rooms filled with grandma's old living room set, vintage light fixtures and a pool table. Outside is a sizable patio area with basketball hoops, an exterior bar and rooftop terrace tables. Music is from a jukebox which means no dictatorship of the DJ. If you are willing to part with $5, you can get about 7 to 10 songs of your choice. The music selection tends toward indie, alternative, pop and 80's. Not a lot of hip-hop, rap or country, which is another big plus. On the other hand, sometimes the wrong person will commandeer the jukebox and make life a living hell for ten minutes- but this too passes. The crowd is mixed and diverse. Gays, trannies, metros, and straights all coexist peacefully here. There is inevitably, without fail, one person who is acting like an ass, but isn't there always? Sit in a barcalounger and make snarky comments about them, it's part of the fun. While the drinks are well priced ($3 for any drink except "super-premiums"), be careful which bartender you get. Some are really awesome, friendly, good pourers, while others are on the surly side. One piece of advice: tip like a decent human being. We had a friend who left no tip on a $40 tab. The bartender declared him the worst tipper ever- by name over the intercom. Rightfully so. One sour note- the spinning ball of death. Occasionally, and without warning, one of the bartenders will flip on the multi-colored disco ball in the main bar area. No matter where you sit, light beams will pierce your eyes, burning holes through your retinas into your brain. There is no relationship to the music being played and the spinning ball of death. It's been turned on for thumping club music, slow tempo ballads, death metal, bubblegum pop, and old 80's standby's. You have been warned. read more

The Grapevine bar is awesome! Drinks are cheap as hell and you get your money's worth for sure. We went on a Sunday afternoon for pregaming before a concert. We asked the bartender for the drink specials and he rattled off like 4-5 specials and we were by the jukebox so it was kind of hard to hear. My girlfriend never knows what to order at bars so he decided to make her a drink to see if she liked it. She thought it was delicious. I ordered a standard Jack and Coke. The bartender then asked us if we'd ever been here and we said he haven't. He then gave us our drinks on the house, which was really unexpected and awesome of him. We went for seconds on our drinks and I watched another bartender pour my Jack and Coke. No lie, she poured 75% Jack and only the top quarter of it was filled with Coke. I love this bar. I have been coming to it and Lee Harvey's almost exclusively since I moved to Dallas. Despite the infrequency of visits, I noticed a recent change in the staff. There is a new, dark haired, short, female bar tender in the front bar on Sundays, who couldn't be ruder. She was obviously in a foul mood on Sunday, and made a point of telling some people, who were ordering from her next to me, about it. She took her sweet time delivering drinks. I thought it was rude, unprofessional, and gross. People were raising their eyebrows about her terse comments. If she had said anything rude to me, she would have been sorry. Came here for Fat Tuesday with Danarian B. this week and was pleasantly surprised. I had never been before and neither had D so we thought it would be a fun change of pace. The Grape is set up into three separate areas which I thought was fun. The only thing I don't understand is why the bathroom is located about 5 steps away from the entrance. This means if you are standing in line to wizz you are more than likely going to get whacked by a door or bumped into. Also, do not stand at the side of the bar to order a drink or you will get pinned in between the door and the bar (like I did) and no one will care! We spent most of our evening out on the patio area since it was easier to get to the bar and there was more available seating. There is also a unisex bathroom outside which most people didn't seem to know about since there was never a line of more than 3-5 people. There were heat lamps under the covered area of the patio but they were ridiculously hot and some of the taller people said they felt like their scalps were being burned. Eek. I did not have that problem. Basketball at a gay bar...great!!! It was pretty hilarious watching people play and try to get games going while sipping on their drinks. I also loved the signs warning you about flying balls....classic. The drinks are also super super cheap here and they have tons of specials going on all the time which is always a plus. This is definitely a no nonsense bar that attracts a super diverse crowd. We met some awesome people out this night...and in typical form on my ventures to gay bars, I got to see boobies! When I think of a bar that is relaxing, yet full of eccentric people, I think of The Grapevine. You might see your local drug dealer in one corner, the heard of SMU Tri Delts in another, your local Oaklawn drag queens and their posse up front. Walk outside by the basketball court and you will find the straight men playing hoops while the gay boys look on. It is a place that is unique to Dallas in so many ways. Bars in dallas are generally pretty good and can give you what you need, but one that fits your personality takes some roaming. I've had this one on my to-try list forever since the reviews' descriptions seemed to be right up my alley. I'm happy to report that it's everything I expected when finally the right time/place converged for me to check it out recently. This is definitely a dive bar!!! You walk in to a very small bar area with Grandma's couches and chairs in the room, but that is kind of the appeal. I liked that decor. You proceed thru to a small with with a pool table which leads you to the back patio that is spacious with tables and a basketball court in the back. I'm so glad a friend of mine introduced us to this place the other day! It's a super cozy bar with three different areas. The first is like someone set up a bar in their living room and all your friends are there. I loved the comfy chairs and sweet light fixtures. Some of their drinks are hella cheap--$2 bellinis made with everclear (they tasted plenty classy don't worry) and $2.50 pomegranite margaritas? Count me in! They've also got Guinness and Ace Pear on tap to make a $5 snakebite, which my guy always loves. The second is a room with a pool table, the third room has a dance floor, another bar, and opens up to the outside patio, but it was much too cold for that, so we stayed in the front room. We parked in the lot next to it, but we got there pretty early so I imagine that would fill up pretty quick. I'm not sure how much street parking there is around there otherwise, I didn't see much at least. You never know what you'll hear, who you'll see, WHAT you'll see, etc. at Grapevine. From barefoot basketball to conversation about BDSM over bellinis, Grapevine's got it all! When the weather is nice, their outdoor areas, yes, plural, are top notch. When it's cold out (and/or they're not undergoing remodeling), opt for inside--if you're really lucky, and there's space, that is--where the juke box is a dream for a girl of the 80's (just sayin--best Depeche Mode collection in town). I've met some awesome people here, had a birthday party here, gone here on dates, gone here by myself...Grapevine is one of the coolest little spots on earth and you can just be yourself and enjoy a strong, cheap drink. Check Your Attitude At The Door. That pretty much says it all and this phrase greets you at the front door of The Grapevine Bar. This is a no frills down and dirty (in a good way) bar. It's also one of my favorite places to spend an hour or two. The inside is small and I sometimes wonder if they raided my grandparents 70s place for the groovy decorations. Probably not, but those glass grapes hanging from the ceiling looks suspiciously like what both of my grandmothers had lying in a bowl on the coffee table... Anyway, there is also a large outdoor area which includes a basketball goal. That's right, you can drink that frozen bellini while you're shooting hoops. Me, I just prefer to sit with a cold beer and leave the basketball to others. Or if you want to be above it all, head on upstairs to the deck. Believe me, there is some great people watching to be had at this bar. And speaking of people, this place attracts everyone. You'll find all kinds here. Seriously, it's great. Now to the important stuff-they have some great drinks specials. They don't serve food but I have seen people order pizza or sandwiches and have it delivered there. They also have a great staff. The bartenders are friendly and really seem to have fun at their work. If you're looking for a low-keyed funky place to have a good drink with some friends, you really should check it out. My favorite place is the outside patio the basketball goal. The bartenders are friendly but never fake, and I always feel like they have a heavy hand with their pour. It's anything but pretentious, which is a welcome relief in Dallas. The Grapevine at night is what I really love. The string lights really come alive and lend a whole new dimension to the atmosphere. The Grapevine bar is one of the most unique dive bars in Dallas. The atmosphere inside is dark yet inviting and the clientele is one of the best. People from all walks of life can be found here...gay to straight and the daytime bartender, Jon Bryan, is one of the best around. Great Dive Bar with some drinks that will knock you off your feet. They have several signature frozen cocktails and then a special one of all 3 mixed together called the suicide, and unless you're ready to call it a night at 2pm I'd avoid it at all cost. All three of these frozen drinks are super sugary as well, so for someone like me who would rather a spirit forward cocktail, the sweetness was overpowering. Outside they have a basketball court and even a back window to the infamous Val's Cheesecakes. Always a great place to come with friends and just relax and have a drink on a nice day. read more
