We check this place out after a concert at the house of blues. It reminded me more of the college dive which might be the drinks are cheap the decoration is eclectic and the bartenders are very attentive. It is a very small place with a open smoking area in the back and one cramped pool table. This place is nice because is casual, the drinks are cheap and the atmosphere is relax. I really like the patio, at night time is such a sweet place to be. The temperature inside is nice and cold so that works well because it gets crouded and helps staying fresh just in case some of us get lucky ;) The arm chairs are comfortable, so comfortable one time I was falling to sleep must have been a combination of the drinking and me being tired that day. This could be one of my favorite patios in Dallas. The lights are so pretty and the music sets a really nice vibe, although it can get really loud and smokey. There's a relaxed feel to it, and a little basketball court outside for funsies. You can also shoot some pool in the intimate little pool room with one single table if you're lucky enough to get a spot. The prices are cheap cheap cheap on most things. Late on a Sunday night, the frozen drinks (which are my favorites) were only $4.50! Apparently there's an all-day happy hour on Sunday, as well as select other days. I'd say my favorite drink is the frozen Pom Pom. Someone once told me that they put everclear in these, but I can't testify the truth in that statement. Seemed strong, though! My complaint: when I walked in, it smelled just like dirty bathrooms or sewer. Didn't exactly make me crave a drink. The bathrooms are your typical dive bar toilets, the size of a closet. There's a sign on the doors that says boy/girl doesn't matter, just wash your hands. I thought that was a pretty funny touch.. and I definitely can agree (it's flu season!!) Parking can become hard to find on the weekend, too. I've had to park 2 neighborhoods away in the past. The bartenders are a little scruffy, too. My friends and I went to this bar last Saturday for a friend who was just in town for a long layover. So we just wanted a couple of drinks before taking our friend back to the airport. The place is as great as we had been told by some friends who had been here before. The eclectic people in a bar that has two bars, a pool room, outdoor patio, and a basketball court? What didn't it have?? The drinks were also relatively cheap but didn't taste like it! Best of both worlds. We were having a great time and decided to have one last round of shots before we headed out. But then we did get them. See, we ordered the shots and then the bartender accused one of my friends of not tipping. Except my friend had just tipped $5; I remember because, as the sober DD, I asked if he really meant to put a $5 in, considering he had been tipping well after every drink. We said he had but the bartender wasn't having it. We decided it wasn't worth it so we tried to just walk away. But then the bartender decided to kick my friend out so we all left. Honestly, I thought we had found an awesome niche little bar I'd never heard of and thought we could come here more often, but not after that experience. Tips are optional; not mandatory. If you were trying to locate me during the years of 2004-2006, odds are you would have found me holding court here. Therefore, no trip to Dallas could ever be complete without a visit to the one, the only, and my absolute favorite bar in the Big D: The Grapevine. This place is for gays, straights, and everyone in between. Years ago, I had made friends with a neighbor in my apartment complex, Emily, who insisted I join her at a joint called The Grapevine. I asked her if it was a gay bar, and she gave me a somewhat muddled answer that led me to believe that this place was open to basically anyone. Actually, it was described as "a place where straight men and trannies can co-exist peacefully." I was skeptical. Could there really be a bar that was neutral ground in an otherwise segregated, isolationist world? Short answer? Yes. While my past experiences at The Grapevine could fill entire volumes, the highlights included meeting friends I still have to this day, raucous nights out with adventurous swinging couples. and even a conversation with Ted Allen, when he was still the "Food Guy" from 'Queer Eye for The Straight Guy", and celebrating his birthday here. Walking in this time, it felt like I hadn't left for more than a day. The familiarity was fantastic. This place defines hole-in-the-wall, and you get that feeling as soon as you walk in. Fortunately, it's a quirky hole-in-the-wall, and not one that would make my "drink-or-flight" reaction kick in. Low sofas and tables are to your right, which I rarely sit at since it's just so crowded at the main bar. Expect to elbow your way through lines snaking behind the two closed door bathrooms at the left, and dozens of patrons ordering drinks straight ahead. Make your way to the patio. You'll pass through a room with a pool table and limited seating and if this is your cup of tea, have at it. I played a game or two with a couple of questionable bisexual guys before. It can be fun. When you reach the patio, you'll notice a bar. Convenient, yes, but keep in mind it is cash only. Tabs can be left at the front, but if you're feeling just a tad claustrophobic from the descriptions, your best course of action is to bring cash and make this your point of sale, as walking back and forth with drinks can become quite an ordeal. On the plus side, you may bump into some very interesting people. Jen and I ordered Everclear bellinis from Gale, a Grapevine staple who has been bartending for 12 years. Gale recognized me, and I inquired about some old friends we both knew. For someone so far removed from Dallas, I sure know a few people. Bellinis and other cocktails are served in all different shapes and sizes of glasses, so if yours varies from time to time, that's no accident. The bellinis will knock you on your ass. Outside on the patio, enjoy plenty of seating both near the bar, or even further outside where they have a basketball court. Yes, a basketball court. Seems random, but I like to watch the cute drunk guys shoot hoops. We sat down at a half empty table by the court with a very attractive girl who introduced herself as Ashley. As her boyfriend played basketball, she very animatedly welcomed Jen to Dallas and we had a perfectly lovely conversation about our adventures so far and our favorite Dallas shopping spots. This is what I love about The Grapevine--a friendly crowd, and strangers that aren't afraid to open up to others and have a great time. But as soon as her boyfriend Brad came back, Ashley went from chirpy cocktail conversationalist to a sullen, irritated harpy who chided him for indiscretions that he largely ignored. More specifically, she was mad at him for...playing basketball(?). In spite of her incessant nagging, and the increasingly uncomfortable mood at the table, he remained upbeat and he and I got along just fine. He was cute, too, which is why I didn't understand why Ashley was being such a B about everything. Later on, when I went to refill our bellinis, Brad approached me and apologized for her behavior and said he really liked talking to us. Meanwhile, Jen got tipsy enough to tell her if she really *was* that unhappy with him, then she should just leave him. Normally, we're not this interested in straight drama, but we weren't the ones airing our argumentative silliness in front of strangers. Anyhow, as Karen Walker mused: "It's fun when boring people fight." Amen. Incidentally, this is also N's favorite bar in Dallas, and his presence with us was greatly missed. He and I are due for a drink there, big time. When it's all said and done, the memories I have of The Grapevine are overwhelmingly happy, and I dare say I find myself more at home here than even with my tribe over in Oak Lawn. If you can imagine, The Grapevine captures the spirit of Austin more closely than any other bar I've been to in Dallas. It's upbeat, fabulous, boozy, and fun. Sound like anyone we know? 5 stars...for all the good times. read more

This is a very chill dive bar. I went on a Saturday night with a group of friends. The drinks were good and there was a patio with a number of heaters that were working. The staff was nice, the waitress was friendly and I don. It feel as if anyone was racist at all as stated in previous review. There are a number of picnic tables and a basketball court outside as well. I will definitely go back for a happy hour or a stop on a night out. read more

i like the grapevine. if you don't have your ID, you probably won't be drinking here. that's standard for a bar, right? tabc, y'know? as patrons, we can't expect bartenders to put their jobs on the line so we can get drunk. that's life. i once saw a girl hurl in the trashcan outside and then play it off like nothing had happened. it was awesome. the bellinis are cheap, and tasty, and if you're a binge drinker like i am, they'll do you right. and pardon my crassness, but you'll need to prepare yourself for the "bellini shits" that you'll encounter the next morning. but you should drink them anyway. there's not much seating. but i'll live. there's not much parking. but i'll live. the lines to the unisex restrooms are brutal. but guess what? i'll live. there's always a diverse crowd. it's like a blissfull utopia where hetero and queer folk can live together in peace. and get real drunk. best of all, my friends tend to run into their exes and unfortunate hookups here, and it's that awkwardness that i truly live for. read more

Since it was cold outside, the patio wasn't really a viable option. We were going to stick around, but all of us had to *ahem* use the facilities. There was a line blocking the entrance to the entire place just to use the bathroom and there wasn't much room to get around at all. What a fun place to grab a stiff drink any day of the week and especially all day happy hour. The drink specials are a steal for you and your WP. The crowd is diverse and I love the laid back attitude of the place. It has that great dive bar feel that simply serves up great drinks at a solid price. I'm a lightweight when it comes to drinking so it's always great for me to stay away from shots. The night can go from zero to sixty in no time. I'm glad this bar doesn't need that at all. I just want to enjoy the great drinks at a nominal price. The parking lot is a little wild so be careful. Ladies if your wearing stripper heels have that man drop you in the front so you can order drinks. I think I want to play some basketball next time and drink on the roof. read more

I attended an UYE at The Grapevine Bar and was amazed (in a good way) that people were hanging out at a bar in the middle of the day enjoying the patio and drinks. I always thought that bars were for nightlife but hanging at The Grapevine Bar was good. I didn't check it out much because I was busy chatting up with my fellow Yelpers but I did notice that there is a basketball court (on the inside patio/courtyard), and large tables for hanging out with groups of friends. There's also an upstairs patio (not sure what's up there). I ordered my signature margarita, which was mixed well, and only cost $4 (you read that right). I had been meaning to try The Grapevine for quite some time now. Several friends have recommended what a neat gem of a place this is, and also raved about the large, terrific patio out back. A friend and I decided to stop in after dinner Friday night as it was near to Ojeda's where we had just eaten. Upon walking in the door, we were immediately greated by the bartendar and asked if we had been in before. We explained that we were newbies and he bought us our first round. Such a neat place on the inside, too. Now the music plays into the factor that I give this locale 5 stars. The music is incredible. A nice mix of 60's, 70's, and 80's that you haven't heard in ages but find yourself saying, "Wow, I love this song!" We were welcomed warmly and enjoyed a couple of cocktails which were very well made. We'll definitely be back! read more

Cheap drinks but the bartenders are so RUDE! I ordered the frozen Bellini (tasty but not strong) & it cost $3. Planned on getting more but after I paid the bartenders yelled at us for not tipping lol I was going to after I closed my tab. Even if I wasn't going to why yell "We work on tips! Don't come back! Came here Sunday 1/15 on a sunday funday bar hop and was super pleased with the strong drinks, awesome bartender, and awesome regulars we made friends with! Love the goodwill looking couches, and all the seperate spaces. Only complaint, the two waitress's were really stuck up. They were both giving all the customer's rude looks, were sitting texting and talking on their phones, and even took my friends drink (only about half gone) and when we commented she rolled her eyes and said "wooooowwww" under her breath. If not for these girls I would've given 5 stars, and if not for my shred of sobriety I would've given them a piece of mind :-) will be back, just hope they have the night off and there's some nicer girls working. read more

I had my husband's 40th birthday party here. I reserved the patio which was amazing. I was allowed to bring in my own food but I couldn't use the warmers so that kinda sucked but overall it was good. The crowd was fun and nice. Our server was cool. The only drawback was that there was no music on the patio. Had I known that I would have brought my own wireless speaker (which we just used someone else's) so not that big of a deal. We had a great time!!! read more

You'll be greeted at the front door by an angry Apollo Nida-wannabe who will literally yell at the bar patrons, cuss them out, and call the female customers b*tches. (LITERALLY). I cannot even begin to describe the horrid experience I had here recently. It was embarrassing, mortifying, and completely beneath me. There are far better bars and lounges with better drinks. Not to mention this is the first bar I have been to in a LONG time that both the bar employees AND patrons made me fearful of my safety. We wanted to try this bar as none of us had ever been. The night was going fine despite the cramped atmosphere as well as the odd, choppy floorplan. I get approached by a "gentleman" who asked me if I wanted to participate in a drug-infused orgy. Literally, not making this up. I told him no and he ran away. A few minutes later, out of nowhere, we get cussed out by the man at the door who barks at people for their ID's. He literally YELLS at us, cusses us out, and calls my friend a b*tch. You can't make this stuff up. I haven't felt threatened in this way in a very long time. Needless to say, never attending this bar again. It does not belong in the area and should be shut down. It's so ironic that you have The Library Bar within walking distance, and yet this dump remains in business. Absolutely ratchet experience and I plan to never again set foot in it for fear of my safety and comfort being compromised. read more

MyTouch Tunes jukebox gets played by the patrons. Bartenders kick out lame jukebox tunes. The sign on the door says, "check your attitude here" (or something like that). Heed that advice! Who should you take here? Your best friend who moved away, but came to visit you after getting divorced. Your single nephew who is on leave from the Army. Your gay friends. Your most boring work friends. Take yourself there, by yourself, and see how many opposite-sex and same-sex flirts you will encounter. It's astounding, no matter what your age. Smile and nod politely. Seedy, collegiate appeal, and is not for everyone. Keep an open mind. Wear your crimson red, velvet shirt, if you have one. Everyone who has visited The Grapevine Bar a few times, has at least one good story about the place. Here's mine... I sit down on the patio with five friends, none of whom had ever been there. We're all looking around at the tattooed, blown-dry, bleached, crisply ironed, sweaty, tweaky, buzzed-up, diverse clientele. I'm the only one talking, because everyone else was enthralled with what was going on. Then we all start watching... Two tall, tanned, blonde, fashionable white women in their 30's sit at one of the benches with fresh cocktails. They appear timid at first, glancing about the room without talking. After a few minutes they both light cigarettes and begin to talk, then laugh, and then start laughing even louder. People nearby begin to look at them. Then, the two young ladies began to kiss one another. Smoking and kissing, simultaneously. A tall, muscular, black man dashes around the corner and yells out, "I thought I heard you two... Oh, girl, girl, you two are cute today!" Built like a linebacker, but dressed in a homemade clear plastic cape, clear plastic miniskirt, and clear jelly shoes; this dude continues, "Well, look what I made this afternoon, this cape and miniskirt. Amazing what you can do when clear plastic shower curtains go on sale, isn't it?" All that transparency of his attire revealed the undergarments, too: eggshell white, frilly, lacy, women's underwear, and a matching c-cup lace halter top that could barely manage holding in some rather beefy and hairy pecs. They chat, laugh, smoke more cigarettes, and start their second cocktails. The dude tries to sit down, but something broke, ripped, or popped out of his drag getup, so he goes back to standing up. They all had a good laugh at whatever happened. I became extremely curious, for naught. My group announces that they're ready to leave, after just one drink. Holy gender-bender, Batman! Just when everything started to get really interesting! I have different friends, nowadays, by the way. The Grapevine Bar is a creative place, no doubt about that. First of all, I have to admit that I am generally not a big fan of dive bars, but my friend insisted that I check it out because it was the coolest place to end up on a Sunday-Funday. It was as eclectic and fun as he described. So I am glad we went. The inside bar area is tiny, but it does have a billiard table which was pretty cool.
