We haven't been here for only God knows how long - in fact, my Yelp review of the Green Papaya in River Edge was 12 years ago (!!!) - but I remembered having fond memories of the place. So my husband (who btw was my boyfriend in my 2013 Yelp review) treated me to dinner at the Green Papaya tonight after work. We started with homemade crispy tofu and veggie spring rolls. Then for entrees, we ended up getting Malaysian Curry dishes. I wanted a soup - so I went with the noodle soup dinner. The coconut curry broth was delicious! My husband went with the curry entre (over rice with a small salad on the side). He said it was very good. The host was great; she was so friendly and welcoming. The food, hospitality, and overall vibe are what bring in the regular customers. We were surrounded by regular customers, as we kept hearing people at other tables rave about the place or say "good to see you" to staff there. It feels very cheery there. Nothing from my original Yelp review has really changed - except now I'm giving it a 5 stars! The Green Papaya is one wonderful Thai-fusion eatery! read more

THE GOOD ---------------- + Food was super fresh and delicious! ++++ Roti - Was OK. A bit on the small side, but it was only $5, so you figure that would be the case that it was a small serving. The curry was a bit watery though. ++++ Tropical Mango with White Rice - Solid. Lots of mango slices and 6 pieces of large shrimp. Came to Green Papaya for lunch and got the drunken noodles lunch special with Tom Yum soup. The noodles were spicy but tasted overcooked and gummy, no real flavor at all. The soup was the same -- just bland. Ambience was super quiet, only two people in there. The place was clean, but honestly the food didn't hit at all. Takeout is not good. We ordered: -Crispy tofu - a little dry. I also didn't care for the sauce it came with. It was too sweet -Pad Thai - looked different from when we dined in. It was lighter in color for takeout. Also, the noodles were in pieces -Pad Kee Mao - this was pretty good. It wasn't overly spicy and the noodles held up -Pad See Ew - this was probably the worst pad see ew I've ever tasted. It was WAY too salty and sweet to the point where my mouth felt numb after eating it. I would highly recommend dining in, which stinks because I love getting takeout. Really enjoyed the variety of Thai and Malaysian Dishes here. I was initially looking for a Thai restaurant but I'm so glad I stumbled upon this restaurant. I ended up trying their Malaysian curry dish, the portion was hearty and came with a side salad dressed in a peanut sauce. The curry was very flavorful but I thought the chicken itself didn't take up as much of the flavor. With a little added salt, the dish came to life and I really liked it. I would definitely order from here again and try some of their other dishes. It's not as common to find Malaysian food in this area and I think they do a pretty good job! read more

We happened to be out in the area and looking for a new dinner place when I came across The Green Papaya in my Yelp bookmarks. We loved that the restaurant offered various flavors from across Thailand, China, Vietnam, Malaysia, and Singapore, providing a little bit of most of the Asian notes we adored. We headed over there on the spur of the moment on a Monday evening and, thankfully, did not have a problem getting a table. The restaurant, however, was bustling with several other diners and a robust takeout business. We were greeted with smiles by the friendly staff and seated at one of the tables along the window. The restaurant was very casual and resembled what might have been an IHOP or a diner in the past. It was clean and welcoming, and our server was sweet and amiable. In fact, right as we were being seated, she asked if we would like water or tea, and I opted for both. The tea was very light and could have used more potency, but it still provided some warmth on the cold evening. We started by sharing a Roti Canai, a Malaysian pancake we had always adored. Theirs was thin, buttery, and sliced into delicate triangles. It was served with a curry chicken dipping sauce, which contained a singular roasted potato, which we also split in half. The sauce was very coconut milk-forward and a bit runny, but it tasted great. I think it just needed a bit more curry. For my entree, I selected the Sambal Shrimp, another Malaysian favorite of mine. The shrimp were plump, crisp, and perfectly cooked. The shellfish cost the same as the other proteins, which would typically give me pause, but these were excellent! Plus, they were actually deveined, a flaw that I notice too often in other restaurants. The dish also included onions, peppers, pineapple, and okra, creating a balance of sweet and savory. The spicy red chili and shrimp paste sauce was hearty and flavorful, but also could have been thicker and used more shrimp paste for added funk. I was also able to select brown rice at no additional cost, and the large mound of grains was great! The rice was delicate and not a giant mush. Lastly, I should mention that my meal also included a salad with what was clearly a homemade peanut dressing that was delicious and included real chopped peanuts. In addition to my dish, I took a bite of the Drunken Noodles with Chicken, which was fantastic! The sauce was browner than usual, so we were worried that it would not be spicy, but it was packed the ideal amount of kick. In fact, when I had bookmarked the restaurant, I had noted that I had seen their Pad See Ew on social media and that it had looked amazing. So, I think I will select a noodle dish on my next visit... I wandered over here for dinner on a whim while waiting to meet people. I am glad I did! I ordered the shrimp wonton noodle soup. Even though it was objectively too hot day that broth hit the spot. The wontons themselves were just alright, but I devoured the whole bowl. The broth was just that good. Also tea is served to everyone, which sets a nice mood. Overall a nice meal. The Green Papaya is so, so, so good every single time. I've been ordering from or dining in at The Green Papaya since 2017 when my friend recommended it to me, and I can definitely say it is one of my favorite restaurants ever. This restaurant was my introduction to Thai food. Everyone serving the tables has been very friendly during my visits and makes me feel at home. I particularly love the beef pad see ew. I love my food piping hot and every time I order anything, it really has been piping hot. It reminds me that my food is being made to order so the food tastes even better somehow. Some of the most solid bubble tea in Bergen County. The tapioca is consistently on point (it's soft and sweet), though the milk tea is less so. You can order in advance to pickup their boba milk tea and it takes about 10 minutes Covid adaptations: their covid protocols are not quite robust. If you want to sit inside, they'll maximize the spacing between you and other diners and they keep the main door open. There's no plexi glass and you will have to hand your credit card to the cashier to pay and exchange pens and paper (so maybe BYOP (bring your own pen). They have hand sanitizer so feel free to use it before and after paying. And all their employees wear masks. read more

The place is okay I am expecting a lot of food choices to offer but not much the exhaust of kitchen ventilation not good while eating or waiting for your food expect you will smell the kitchen sauté or whatever they cooking. our winter coat smells oil after we eat, ( even my hair and my clothes wearing ) the food is okay though i know it's fusion but nothing special, the service is okay not bad, I used their restroom need to clean up eww! And the door knob my god I thought i will be locked inside they should fixed it. One more thing There some pillow in the couch table that we eat please laundry the pillowcases, The restaurant must be a little old but doesn't mean it should not be clean, overall experience I eat here to try but never coming back because i went home hungry. I came back here today with two friends of mine for the first time since pre-COVID times, and let's just say things have definitely changed a little bit since then... Our servers were very lovely, first and foremost! Always coming around to check on us to see how we liked our meals, refilling our hot tea and water! The older woman who was there today, who may have been the manager (who I believe is Singaporean or Malaysian based on her accent) is SUPER knowledgeable on her Southeast Asian food, so I was extremely impressed after we had mentioned our preference for sweet & sour sauce for our Veggie Spring Rolls over the seasoned lemon vinaigrette sauce that comes with them by default. I had ordered Chicken Green Curry with White Rice for myself, since I am from Lodi and our beloved Kaya Japanese-Chinese-Thai fusion restaurant recently closed down... and Green Papaya's green curry was absolutely fantastic! I also had ordered the Ipoh Bean Sprouts which were heavenly delicious, and was very surprised that they are served warm and not cold like I'm used to having bean sprouts! The one dish I will say that I was less-than impressed with this time around was the Roti Canai... the serving of the curry was a bit smaller than I had expected, and there was only one chunk of potato in it as well... probably best to not purchase the Roti Canai from Green Papaya going forward, personally. Aside from the food, the restaurant had a very nice vibe to it inside - we sat by the front windows in the booths; the restaurant was decorated very cutesy (the pink ceiling fans were ADORABLE!), and at first when we had arrived, it was pretty empty, but the longer we stayed - we had noticed the restaurant fill up pretty nicely for a Sunday afternoon! All in all, I'm definitely going to come back to Green Papaya yet again when I get that itch for Thai or Singaporean/Malaysian food! I'm eyeing their Pad See Ew to try again for the next time, but I'm probably going to pass on the Roti Canai for my next visit... no hard feelings~! read more

First time in-house dining at the Green Papaya and it turned out great! My wife has celiac as a food allergy so we needed to have some Gluten Free options for her. We had a conversation with the owner who gave her several good options. Her shrimp dinner was exceptional and my Seafood special was great as well both in taste and in amount of food that filled my plate and the presentation. Definitely going back again and will be bringing some friends along in the future to enjoy this place!!!! read more
