Roast Pork Egg Foo Young w/PFR

I've been wanting to try this place for a while, so I finally ordered delivery. The delivery time was quoted 50-60 minutes. It came in 59. The food was hot and fresh. It looked great. Eggroll: standard. Nothing great, nothing horrible. It could've used more pork. Wonton Soup: the wontons were great! Thin wrappers and flavorful filling, but the broth was super super bland. Egg Foo Young: very good.....except for the gravy. Super bland. I had to add 2 soy sauce packets and even then, it was missing something. Pork Fried rice: I appreciated the fact that they didn't use yellow rice, but this was bland as well. It was fine since I was eating it with the Egg Foo Young and gravy, but I'd be disappointed it I ordered it on its own. Chinese Donuts: standard. Hard to mess these up. I won't completely rule this place out, but I was a bit disappointed. I see a lot of people like the lo mein and General Tso's/sesame/orange chicken with white rice, so I may give those a try one day. I feel they need to step up their game since there's over 20 Chinese spots within 5 miles (there's about 4-5 in each town).

I don't Yelp much these days, but this place motivated me, compelled me. After ordering the second time and touring into dishes I EXPECTED to be bad and being amazed I HAD to log in and leave a review. I know you have head people say things like this before, but i'm NOT exaggerating when i say "you will NOT find better Chinese food in North NJ at this price-point within delivery radius of the River Edge, New Milford, Dumont, Ordadel area. Game over. Period. It puts Lotus in Hackensack to shame for less money. Here re some highlights: Dumplings: Made in house, not frozen and fried/steamed like 99.9% of spots (including lotus) Chicken: Not junk meant hidden in excess breading. No 0.0% mysterious "chewies" to be found Beef: (same as above) Order extra spice: They actually MADE it extra spicy, not the typical lazy red-pepper flake sprinkle, or side order of spicy oil. General Tso's: Thinly and tastefully breaded with a slight crisp to the crust (not that nasty, soggy, super thick junk you find at 95% of other spot. GREAT! Even the damn crunchy noodles they give you for the soup tasted home made. I could go on and on. Everything was as good re-heated the next day as it was freshly delivered. I'm an old-school Yelper (before corporate mucked it up) and I don't hype places up. If you live within delivery range of this place you are blessed. Even if I moved a town or two out of range i would consider picking up from here or using an external delivery service. It's that good. Next time Ill take more pictures.. They Deserve it!

    1. General Tso's Chicken (White meat)(Spicy)

I ordered several items: Steamed Seafood dumpling was great. The dough was thin and had great texture. It came with a sauce I felt was only halfway filled. Small Beef with mushroom with small white rice. The beef with mushroom tasted savory. The portion size was smaller compared to sorrounding Chinese delivery restaurants. Other restaurants would've filled it. General tso chicken was dry. Sauce was OK. The chicken was very dry. I have trouble putting a fork through them. Usually the outer part of the chicken is covered with a crispy dough - mine was soggy. Again, container wasn't filled like other nearby restaurants. I ordered it with a medium sized rice - comparatively, other nearby restaurants this would be a small. $16 is too expensive for this general tsDumplingso chicken, and that's before tax, delivery fee, and delivery tip. Other items are also a dollar or three more expensive than nearby restaurants, unfortunately it's one of few open past 10pm

Quick service. Food is good. Staff is very friendly. The teriyaki (big container) is a very generous portion. I can eat it for 3 meals.

Finding GOOD Chinese take-out (not just edible) seems to be as probable as winning a game of ring toss. That is- it's a slippery slope- which is why I always find myself debating whether or not to gamble my money on a new business when I could just order from the place I've traveled far and long to find. Sadly for me, Chen's was a let down and I wish I had stuck to what I know. Where Chen's fell short: 1. I ordered *sesame* chicken...but there were no seeds (see picture) 2. The lo mein was too oily 3. The *pork* fried rice had almost no pork, let alone any other vegetables in it 4. Both the lo mein and rice were pretty bland and light in color due to a lack of soy sauce 5. The hot and sour soup "broth" was gloppy and syrupy which made me not want to eat it 6. The won-ton soup had lighter, more delicate dumpling noodles which I rather enjoyed however, there was barely any filling and it also lacked flavor 7. I didn't enjoy the chinese noodle soup crackers which are usually my favorite 8. I called in to order a teriyaki lunch combo according to their menu, but was told they only have teriyaki on a stick Where Chen's succeeds: 1. The staff is friendly 2. My to-go order was ready in no time (exactly the estimated 15 min. they quoted me) and they even followed up with a phone call to notify me it was ready 3. The interior and behind the counter is clean and they have lots of dine-in seating 4. The beef and chicken were tender for the most part, not dry and stringy from over-frying 5. They offer some different options like: Mango Chicken and Shrimp, the Hawaiian Five, Seaweed Salad, Cheesecake Tempura, and Apple Sticks Unfortunately, the good didn't quite outweigh the bad, and for these reasons Chen's has been Chopped.

"General Tso's Chicken" with brown rice
    Marites C.

I only order from here when I'm craving the Chinese sugar donuts. I ordered general tso's chicken lunch with brown rice, boneless spare ribs with brown rice (as backup - yes call me fat lol), and Chinese donuts. Might I add that I LOVE general tso's chicken. Their general tso's chicken tastes and looks like orange chicken with a slight kick to it. I wouldn't order it again. The boneless spare ribs are actually good and saucy. The Chinese donuts are nice and airy (yum!) It's a good thing I ordered backup even though the taste from the general tso's made me lose my appetite.

    125. Broccoli with Garlic Sauce(Spicy)
    Tiffany F.

I ordered from here when my regular Chinese food restaurant was closed because I really wanted Chinese. The food was good. The broccoli with garlic sauce does have a spicy kick to it. The portion sizes were about what I would normally get from my regular place but they are a little more in the expensive side. I would definitely order again because they have a bigger menu.

NY Strip Steak Cheeseburger & Fries Here is the novelty regarding all of these appetizing entrees; they were all prepared from a Chinese take out restaurant! While most of the double sided menu offers Asian cuisine, there is one section specifically geared for American dishes! And the best part is it all tastes fantastic! The starters are on par. They taste identical to what you'd get served at a pub. The cheeseburger was a juicy, giant patty served on a brioche bun. The burger exceeds a Quarter Pounder in terms of taste and size! The steak was also decent, but make sure you have your favorite bottle of steak sauce handy! It's not Longhorn quality, but you'll still get your money's worth and will be satisfied. The calamari was more chewy than crispy, but it wasn't the worst I've had. In fact, it tastes better when I re-heated it in the oven for my preferred level of crispiness. There isn't any indoor seating, so take their outdoor sign literally. If you are looking for delicious non-Asian dishes at reasonable prices at a Chinese spot, this is the place to go.

It is similar to Sichuan/Szechuan cuisine in ways, in that there is an emphasis on spicy foods, although the spice profiles differ. It is in the space formerly occupied by a different Chinese restaurant called Joyce (RIP - I loved and miss their short-lived foray into seafood boils). Although there are many great authentic (meaning regionally specialized) Chinese restaurants in Bergen County and northern NJ, including several Sichuan places, this is the only Hunan one I'm aware of (without venturing further south into NJ), and is certainly one of the nicest Chinese restaurants atmosphere-wise, with an elegant dining room. If you want to try the interesting and authentic dishes, of which there are plenty, order from the sections of the menu labeled with "Hunan" or "Home Style." The soups and cold appetizers are very traditional too. The house speciality is the Hunan steamed fish head with pickled chili - the platter is quite impressive and takes 20-30 min to prepare. You can add tofu (recommended) or noodles for an additional $5. We ordered this but since I'm not a fish head fan (and like my fish very simply dressed) - I think it was a type of carp - the appreciation for it was lost on me. It's topped with a heap of red chilis but is actually not as spicy as it looks. Personally I prefer the fish fillet dishes such as the fish with ginger, which has very tender filet slices. I loved the soup dumplings (large and soupy), shrimp with salted egg yolk (or any salted egg yolk dishes, which aren't easy to find), and enjoyed the tender sautéed beef dishes like beef with spring onion or the spicy green pepper with steak, with crunchy peppers that give a piquant refreshing kick. They have whole Peking duck (Beijing roast duck)! The menu only shows pricing for the whole duck but we asked for half and they obliged. To be honest it's not the best Peking duck I've had but the balance of crispy skin (that's yet not too fatty) to generously shaved lean duck meat was unimpeachable. And they use high-quality crepes that are superbly thin but do not tear. The lo mein is also pretty good - it's slightly smoky and is better than common. Parking tip: there are only a few spots in front but there is a parking lot in the back of the building with plenty of spaces. There are lots of exciting and exotic menu offerings and still many we'd like to try, so we'll be back repeatedly.

To start, they got our order wrong, ok...It happens, but it all went downhill from there. The Sesame Chicken was completely overdone, it was like shoe leather, it's usually outstanding. It had about four sesame seeds on it. We asked for it extra spicy, and it didn't have even a hint of spice. They were supposed to send Beef with garlic sauce, instead they sent some absolutely tasteless chicken dish with what looked like boiled tiny strips of chicken with some vegetables and a TON of that gross baby corn. It was flavorless. We got the combos, so they came over pork fried rice and an egg roll. The rice was mealy, mushy and flavorless. We usually love their rice, it tasted entirely different. There was nothing fried about it, hands down worst pork fried rice I've ever had. The egg roll was hard and greasy with just cabbage inside. Again flavorless. The boneless ribs were just ok, nothing like how they usually are. They are usually very tender and flavorful. These were lacking flavor and fatty. The Wonton soup was completely different as well. What are usually pillowy soft wontons, were thick and gummy. The broth tasted like bath water. So the entirety of our meal tasted NOTHING like the Empire we know and love. This is so disappointing. The same thing happened with Chen's Yummy House. Every time that we find a great place, they change hands and it goes to crap. I just figured I'd warn everyone that this place is NOT the same. I thought maybe they just had a bad night, but I looked at recent Google reviews before posting this, and I see a similar complaint. This was so bad that I don't even think I'll give them another chance for redemption. Every single component of our meal sucked, and we were out $50.

Out of all the choices on the takeout menu, I decided to explore the two most popular plates. General Tso's Chicken Dinner Combo: The hot, spicy chicken is chewy on the inside while slightly crunchy on the outside; expect a mild kick. I'm satisfied broccoli was included, but my only critique is that I would have preferred that the vegetable was mixed in with the tangy sauce. Also included with this combo is pork fried rice and wonton soup. The three wontons and the broth were piping hot. The noodles go hand in hand with the soup. It is a win win whether you choose to have them dry or soaked. Boneless Spare Ribs Dinner Combo: The ribs are tender and chewy with a savory taste. For this combo, I explored the white rice and egg roll. This appetizer was filled with cabbage and ground pork. I enjoyed it, but the size of the egg roll could have been slightly larger with a tad bit more pork. Both combos can also be purchased as a lunch special if you arrive between 11:00 AM and 3:00 PM. An adequate amount of seating is available if you decide to dine in. Empire Szechaun is open six days per week; arrive any day except Tuesday.
