Since we are staying at the Jefferson Hotel during our DC trip we wanted to try out one of the restaurants. The Greenhouse is a magnificent world of charm with beautiful designed china and a colonial decor that would be perfect for an afternoon tea or bridal shower. We were privileged to sit in a tiny alcove off to the side where I was given a stool to lay my purse down. On Sat and Sun brunch only is served but we ordered only the breakfast part. I ordered the avocado toast with poached eggs, tomato,and breakfast potatoes. My husband had the Belgium waffle covered with whipped cream and fruit. We got our meals fairly quickly. My toast was slightly burnt on the edge but the flavor of the eggs mixing with the avocado made it worthwhile. The potatoes were not greasy. They were cooked just right. My husband lovely his waffle but best of all we liked the atmosphere of being in our own private alcove. People have said this place is pricey but that goes with the territory. This is an upscale hotel so I would expect to spend more at a place like this. The atmosphere is laid back so you can just relax and take in the beauty of what this place has to offer. The place is beautiful. Not sure if I ordered the wrong thing but most of what I had was pretty bland. Tried the veggie croque monsier and it was DISGUSTING! The texture was very off putting but they took it off the bill after offering to replace it with something else. My husband loved his food, he got the French toast and the chicken sausage. For our adult son's birthday we decided on lunch at the Greenhouse. it was a great decision. From the moment you arrive at the front door you are treated like royalty, from the doorman helping you out of your car to the coat check team, the warm and friendly wait staff to the kitchen team who made a to go dish after they were officially closed. The staff is very solicitous. Our waiter Abdel was super nice and we were served very quickly after we made our selections. The ambiance is very classy with an abundance of small private nooks , light and airy , ornate and elegant. I was impressed by the padded stool brought to the table so I didn't have to put my purse on the floor. The juice selection was small with an additional offering of a green juice which was very green and a carrot and ginger based power juice which was quite delicious. The food was exceptionally good. My son the carnivore decimated the chicken and waffles and the gorgeous berry French toast. The gem salad with pears was beautifully presented and the vegetarian croque monsieur with Gruyère cheese and shiitake gave new meaning to grilled cheese sandwich. My only criticism is that the portions are very small. The avocado toast for example could have been two slices instead of one . For a vegetarian there are several good selections. For a vegan the options are a bit more challenging . All in all when M and H are visiting from Montecito this is the spot. read more

My sister was offered tea and accepted without realizing it cost $8. Similarly, and this is not a typo, my other sister ordered an 8 oz glass of orange juice that cost $12. The food was delicious and the presentation was lovely. The only "issue" was an unfriendly and abrupt server. He gave us the impression that we were a bother and that he'd much rather not serve us. There was no use of phrases like "thank you," "pardon me/excuse me," now you're welcome." We would have enjoyed ourselves much more had he done the bare minimum to at least one be professional. I invited out of town guests for brunch and we were all thrilled. The Greenhouse has a luxurious ambiance as you enter the foyer and well appointed dining room, with a welcoming host ready to seat you at your reserved time. The tables are nicely set and the wait staff are attentive. The food is amazing--eggs Benedict and French toast were hits at our table. In some of my reviews I may have mentioned that my friend and I do trophy wife days, and what's more trophy wife-y than high tea? During on little vacation to DC we decided to do tea and I scoured the internet (yelp) to find a place we could go. I stumbled upon the the Greenhouse at The Jefferson and I am so glad I did. Everything was perfect. The food, the tea, and staff, it was everything I wanted in a high tea experience. Getting dressed up, walking into a beautiful room and getting to enjoy tea, some light food, and good company was one of the best ways to enjoy a Sunday afternoon. The food was really good, they have a classic brunch menu and I got the banana chocolate chip pancakes which were delicious, chicken sausage was ok. I would definitely go back to try something else. Now the service - impeccable. I could honestly go on and on about the pleasant experiences I had with multiple staff members during the short period of time I was there but will just give one example - We left something there and didn't realize until 7pm so when I went back for it even though the restaurant was closed, the hotel staff went above and beyond to find and even offered me water while I waited. So much so -- that I left feeling like I had just taken a trip to Versailles or had a meal at the Gatsby mansion. Brunch with F. Scott Fitzgerald, yes! This place is so pretty that I couldn't stop staring at the decor when I was there. Can I live here? The brunch here is pretty good, although kinda pricey as would be expected from any place inside a luxury boutique hotel like the Jefferson. The Jefferson isn't only for tourists though, and I'm so glad that my friend suggested it. The hotel attempts to embody all elements of Thomas Jefferson's life in its design -the artwork, the sculptures, and the furniture. The brunch menu features some items that I don't ordinarily see on brunch menus. I got the lobster eggs benedict and it was delicious, although if you aren't a big fan of hollandaise sauce, I would recommend you ask them to go light on the sauce. Beautiful restaurant. I don't typically travel like this. I definitely don't pay this much for a breakfast. But, I was traveling with my CEO for work, and she wanted me to "get a feel" of the Jefferson's breakfast, which she always raves about. So it was that I found myself sitting at a tiny table with my CEO and one of our consultants, sipping out of a $6 cup of coffee, buttering a $4 English muffin and picking through my $8 bowl of "fresh fruit". (I put that in quotes because there were quite a few bruised and old pieces of fruit in that bowl.) I know I'm making light of this, but those who know my travel habits know that I'm not about to spend this much on a meal - especially breakfast - without good reason. Yes, the service was spectacular. They were always there, providing for every little whim my dining companions had. They were gracious and welcoming, and remembered my CEO's preferences from her many trips there prior. I appreciate that (it's nice to see others taking care of the woman I spend so much of my own time taking care of, you know?) My meal was really very basic, so I don't feel right commenting on that (other than the old berries that were at the bottom of my bowl). You can't really mess up a toasted muffin and coffee (the coffee was pretty good, I will say). The ambiance of the restaurant is really nice - it's kind of elegant without being too pompous about it. Unfortunately, there are no pictures of my meal, as I didn't want to go into full-on paparazzi mode with my CEO there, and I felt like the servers would've frowned on my camera phone clicking away. read more

I ate here with a group of coworkers yesterday and have been struggling to come up with a rating since then. I'm settling on three stars because while the decor was beautiful and the servers were friendly, service was very slow and I thought the food didn't live up to expectations. Like I said, the interior of the building is gorgeous. There appear to be a couple of different seating areas all with different atmospheres, but I didn't explore too much apart from where we were sitting. Our room was nice and bright with lots of floral arrangements, with pretty place settings. It sort of felt like we were actually dining in a nicer European cafe. After we ordered, it took about half an hour for our food to come. This was particularly noticeable since it was in the middle of the workday. There was a nice bread basket to nosh on while we were waiting which included mini baguettes and multigrain loaves, but it got to the point that it was sort of frustrating - like maybe we would have gone somewhere else if we'd known how long we'd be sitting there. When our food finally came out, it took an additional five minutes for one of my coworkers' orders to arrive - another frustration. When it finally did, his fries looked barely-cooked, so obviously that was the holdup. My quiche du jour (chicken, mushroom, peas), meanwhile, was barely above room temperature, which is not the ideal temperature to serve quiche. It was quite tasty (and I appreciated that it wasn't stuffed to the gills with cheese, something a lot of American restaurants do that is totally wrong), but that was yet a third point of frustration: I think it was sitting around while my coworker's fries were cooking. The salad it was served with was fine - could have used some kind of acidic dressing to contrast with the savoriness of the quiche. Service was attentive - they kept our water glasses full which is something I always appreciate. They could have been more communicative about the wait, though. To conclude, obviously not a stellar dining experience, which was a surprise to me. But I've heard great things about their tea service, so I might come back sometime to try that. read more

Add a half star to this. Five of us had brunch today. The setting was lovely; light-filled and elegant. (It's true about the purse stool.). The table was beautifully set and the china unusual. A very special space. The service was very nice-- leisurely but not too slow. I ordered the crab cake Benedict. Interesting that the crab cakes were served without the usual English muffin as a base, which saved on carbs. Unfortunately the crab cakes were very underwhelming, with inexpensive crab and lots of filler. The hollandaise was a disappointment--lacked the tang of lemon and needed more salt. The asparagus was perfect and the breakfast potatoes wonderful. My husband ordered the hamburger and he didn't think much of it, but the homemade bratwurst my friend ordered looked very tempting, and it must have been tasty because no one even got a taste. I was able to taste the ricotta pancakes. I don't know how to describe them, but they seemed fluffy but a little dry. My friend described the blueberry waffles as dessert. The apple cobbler was stellar with great topping and ice cream, but the caramel "pecan pie" was really a rock hard cookie bar that had to be cut with a knife. read more

The atmosphere is where the restaurant shines and the level service is very attentive. The menu options are fairly standard--eggs, omelets, pancakes, avocado toast, etc. for brunch and quiche, salmon, chicken etc. for lunch but in general are good. Prices are a little steep but it is an upscale hotel and the service and atmosphere make it worthwhile. I'm more partial to their brunch menu but lunch is nice there too. read more

Absolutely fabulous! This place is a hidden gem in DC. My BFF sorority sister was visiting from NYC and we did not get reservations at Lady Camellia because they were booked (as usual). Luckily we discovered this place. Note: they no longer do afternoon tea, but are open for brunch. It is very classy and cozy. Lovely atmosphere. Very professional staff who are pleasant and fun. I completely fell in love with the ambience. We even got fluffy footstools for our bags- now that is service! The food is delicious! Special mention of the lemon ricotta pancakes- pic added- so soft, fluffy and with the right combination of fresh citrus and creamy sweetness of the ricotta. Best pancakes I have had for brunch. $10 for valet parking is totally worth it. You can even grab lemon iced-tea on your way out after paying for your valet. Definitely take a trip down to the lovely restrooms, complete with mouthwash and soft towels. The short walk around the place adds to the historical charm. Cannot wait to visit again! read more

I wish I could start all of my mornings here. We stayed in the hotel and decided to try here for breakfast. The service is top notch. We ordered the eggs Benedict - best I've ever had - and I've been on an eggs Benedict kick for quite awhile now. My husband had the lemon ricotta pancakes. He enjoyed them and his only feedback would to have the ricotta be a little sweeter. But he's also a sweets kinda guy. Fair prices. Oh, and they give you a little stool for your purse! The only knock-off is parking. Like most places in DC, you might as well rely on public transportation to get here if you are looking to make the most of your experience. Other then that, the service and food was absolutely amazing. It is a bit pricey, but once you enter the Hotel you know what you're in for. It's absolutely cute and quaint. I'd definitely come out here for with your friends/family for a gals brunch/lunch/celebration. Perfect place to take mom out for mothers day or your sister on her birthday. I highly recommend. Went to the Greenhouse for lunch. Tiny, intimate setting just off the lobby, my first time in the hotel since it's renovation. Very pretty space but understated at same time. Service was very attentive and food was above average. We had tomato soup appetizer, mixed green salad appetizer, tuna appetizer served as main course, ny strip (med rare) w/ fries, wine and caps. Would have everything again but fries were average at best but did come with a very nice homemade ketchup. We drove right up to the door, valet had our car back in just a fee minutes. read more

The Greenhouse makes for an excellent atmosphere and a really cool place to bring others to dine. The dining area is beautiful and you really get the feeling you are in a large and airy greenhouse. The table settings are very nice, and service is super attentive as well. As others mentioned, it can be pricey - but this is to be expected with the location inside of the Jefferson + the decor. The food was pretty good, but not excellent. I recommend getting the chocolate dessert (three smaller chocolate-based desserts). They do offer valet parking with the hotel, but I don't think they can accommodate that many people. read more

I came here for a restaurant week lunch. Given the reviews of the companion restaurant Plume at the Jefferson Hotel, I thought Greenhouse would be a good choice. Given the picture below, I expected an elegant lunch. But I was disappointed. My experience here was reminiscent of country clubs: having imitation gourmet food and imperfect interior design. My salmon tartar came with a heaping portion of creme cheese on top. I prefer to enjoy the salmon alone, but the salmon was nearly flavorless, so I understood why they added the creme cheese. The grapefruit pieces were a nice and different touch to the salmon tartar, but didn't really complement the salmon well. I ordered my burger medium rare and it came well done. Adding to the disappointment, it had so much breading in it that any of the meat flavor disappeared. It was a pretty flavorless hamburger. My companion ordered the rockfish, which came in about 3 oz portion. Like the salmon tartar, the rockfish came with vegetables that didn't complement the rockfish. Yet, the rockfish itself was good and had a subtle flavor. The desserts were the highlight. My companion's passionfruit dessert packed a punch. My cinnamon dessert with moscarpone ice cream was also good. The service here intends to be five star. They bring you your proper utensils on silver platters. Actually, everything is brought to you on silver platters. Although, I didn't get a crumb scraping, which you would expect at such a place. The design and decor here still needs tweaking to be perfectly undistracting. The paint job is error-ridden and the renovating construction needs better consistency with the original pieces. On the positive side, there is a lovely large mural painting reminiscent of colonial-era paintings in the lobby area. read more

When you're seeking some understated elegance and refinement--and a much-needed break from the concrete jungle of DC--stop into the Jefferson Hotel for tea. High tea. Now being from the South, the "tea" I'm used to is ice cold and swimming in enough sugar to induce a diabetic coma. But that is not the tea the Jefferson is serving! This is put-on-a-nice-dress-and-a-fake-British-accent tea. (Ok, maybe you do without the fake British accent...) Now I'm not generally a fan of hot tea, but the Lemongrass Green Tea was pretty good. The sandwiches were decent (with the beef one being the best) and the service was moderately attentive (though it was nice to be left alone to talk, to be frank) but the pastries at the end were . . . meh, only so so. That said, the setting was nice and the conversation was great (sorry, that can't be duplicated for you though) -- so I give this a 3.5-star experience over all. read more

After having had a great experience at the hotel's bar, Quill, I decided to stop in for a lunch meeting with an out-of-town client. We were both promptly greeted by name (gathered during the reservation process) and sat in an airy and bright dining room. I found it to be perfect for a business lunch, as it was not the typical darker Bistro lighting found at many lunch spots. Food was excellent, with fresh flavors and average portion sizes; hate huge portions at lunch, especially since it is often at the expense of quality. I ordered the Raw Vegetable Salad and then the Skate Wing. Service was efficient with no extended wait between courses. While the meal is certainly not an everyday lunch break, I would recommend it to anyone wanting to host a business lunch, celebration or simply to enjoy a well-prepared meal. read more
