I'm not sure what to say about the service, since I've reflected over the previous reviews for the diner. I'm currently at a conference for Future Business Leaders of America, so I arrived with a group of ten at 5:45 pm. Our waitress was quick to seat us considering the restaurant was not heavily occupied (only 10-15 other people present with PLENTY of vacant seating) and asked us for our drinks about ten minutes later. After receiving our drinks we ordered our food, and told the staff we had a conference at 7:30 pm that is mandatory; we could not be late. We waited for an hour for our food before asking the status of our dinner. The waitress did not check on us during that time and failed to give us refills. After we asked for the food they told us because we were such a large group our food was taking longer than expected, however we watched 30 or so other customers in the diner that were seated after us pay and leave. My actual food was adequate (a simple BLT), but the two or three extra dollars I paid for the side of fries was wasted; they were cold and had a fishy flavor. We received this at around 6:55 pm. Other customers were upset about the lack of organization when it was time to pay for the meals. The 3 people at the cash register were struggling to maintain organization and told members of our group to cut in front of others to complete the bills we owed. Wow. Came here after a show at the Georgia Theater and was not disappointed. Fresh squeezed OJ, friendly staff and an amazingly good burger. Fries with the feta sauce were on point. We will definitely be back! read more

This place is pretty good--6.5/10. Honestly I love their feta cheese dressing and shakes, but thats about the only reason to go. Everybody in Athens has to at least go for their feta fries and shakes. The burgers are good, but didn't live up to the hype. I usually get their burger with canadian bacon on it--it's different but a good combination in my own opinion. I looove the Grill!! It's an old time-y 70/80s decorated diner. They're open 24/7 which is super nice. The feta fries are my favorite, and always keep me coming back for more! Service is usually pretty chill, but I like that about it. read more

I Ordered a molly burger plate with the burger well done and everything on the side. When It came out and the meat was not cooked in the middle. I notified the waitress and all she said was she was sorry. I also ordered a choc shake that came out melted and all of extras on side never never arrived. I asked to see the manager but he never came out to talk. Also told cashier when exiting but all he said was he was sorry. He Never attempted to get the manager. There were roughly only 10 persons at the restaurant. I've eaten at this place many times but it has gone down since the last time I visited. Interesting place. Not the cleanest but fits the "greasy spoon" image. Patty melt was good. French fries were different but good. Cole slaw had no flavor. No music which made it quiet and awkward. Prices were reasonable. read more

Milkshake was not very cold, & was soupy. Burger was way overcooked & dry. The mushrooms on the burger looked & tasted like canned. The cheese was so over melted it was practically non-existant. Fries were tasteless. Mashed potatoes were good, but they plopped brown gravy on top without asking if I wanted gravy. I did not go into the bathroom, but was told by companions they were very dirty. Every time I have eaten here the food has been good, and when I come in with a group(5-8) we have good service, but I've noticed whenever just my husband and I eat there, the service is horrible! For instance, the last time the two of us ate there, my husband ordered a milkshake, coke, and a buffalo chicken sandwich platter, and I ordered a coke and just a burger platter. Well our server brought my husband's milkshake, and we didn't see her for the rest of the night, at least not at our table. She spent the rest of the time at the milkshake machines talking to one of the other employees(and there was only one other table with patrons there, and they left before we had our food). So one of the other servers(who had been serving the other table) finally brought our food. When she put our food on the table I asked if we could get our drinks, which she quickly brought. And we had to flag that server down for refills because our server never left the milkshake machine. As I said, there was one other table that left before we got our food, as it was about 11 pm on a weeknight. So she wasn't busy making milkshakes, I could see her from where we were sitting. So when we left, we left no tip on the table, and handed a $10 tip to the server who ended up serving us. I understand servers make most of their money off tips, and I tip really well ($10 on a bill of around $20) if it's good service. The only reason I gave three stars is because the food has always been good, especially for the price, and have had decent service when I've went with a large group. read more

Although it did take quite some time for the food to come out (the kitchen for a size this place is awfully tiny), it was so good! I was shocked by the amount of "normal" vegetarian options. Normally you get the weird options and I'm picky. Here they had "faking bacon blt" and tofu dog. I got the vegetarian sunshine burger. It was hands down the best vegetarian burger I've ever had. Service was good also. It picked up as we were leaving and I knew they wouldn't get their food for probably an hour though. Took us about 25-30 mins. read more

I am so over the grill. I think every University of Georgia student at first falls in love with the grill, their 24 hour service, the milkshakes and the downtown location. The more time you spend in Athens the father you grow from your original love. First, you realize that the service is sub-par. That it takes 45 minutes to get a simple milkeshake. That the waiters act like you ordering is a burden on them. They walk past your empty drink glasses. Second, you realize that the cheap food isn't really so cheap. I think Kristin B. head it on the head when she said mentioned the $5 milkshakes. I don't have any empirical evidence, but over the past three years the prices have gone up. The food is Okay, their french fries are pretty tasty with the feta dressing. The burgers and sandwiches are pretty standard, and the milkshakes are okay, but you are better off going to ADD drug for a cheap shake. So, three years ago I would have given the grill four stars, but I now realize that going to the Grill isn't worth the hassle. read more

SUCH poor customer service. They forgot my entire party and when we addressed the issue the staff (specifically the manager and his close friend that was also working) cussed us out and told us to go somewhere else. If you can't handle a lot of people coming in to your restaurant, don't stay open. It's extremely disrespectful to cuss out young customers, let alone any customer whatsoever that is just trying to find somewhere to eat. This place is NOT worth the hassle AND the disrespectful attitude their MANAGER and his employees display. To cuss out a customer trying to communicate an issue is wrong and uncalled for. read more

The Grill is the perfect late night post-bar stop or a late afternoon lunch. Everything on the menu is great. Most delicious are the fries with feta sauce. Feta sauce for fries seems to be everywhere in Athens, but the Grill does it best. read more

Arrived at 2:00 am right before the after bar crowd. So, sure, it was busy. But after waiting well over half an hour for a biscuit and English muffin with an egg, we gave up and got up to leave. An employee chased us out to the street and said that if we ordered it, we had to pay for it. I said that was ridiculous, that if they wanted us to pay for food, they should make it. She then threatened to call the police and claimed the food was ready right then. So I said fine, and we went back in to eat. Except that as we started to sit down, the employee said that nevermind, they'd cancelled our order. So I guess it wasn't ready after all? Here's a suggestion, Grill: when you screw up, don't try to insist that your customers pay for it. That would seem like a pretty fundamental principle of customer service. Perhaps amidst all the rowdiness and drunkenness of college kids, y'all forget that. Thank goodness there's a Waffle House around the corner. read more

The only reason you come to The Grill is for the fries and feta and, perhaps, the chocolate malts. Don't expect great service from the angst-ridden, tatooed kids who run the place. The Grill is an Athens staple for students and visitors. I've always enjoyed eating there and today I was able to show it off to two others. As always, I had their Cherry Coke, which is different from what's available in stores as it's fountain style. My guests had the unsweet and sweet tea with no complaints. All three of us had unlimited, free refills since we each had a platter. Their menu is expansive and I almost went for a vegetarian option because one in particular was sounding very good. Although, in the end I opted for the tuna melt with a salad (no onion, as usual) which was excellent! My two guests had burgers (one with fries and one also with a salad), which I was told repeatedly were very delicious. They were quite busy yet the wait time was extremely reasonable with a good presentation. Our server and the staff were also friendly and did not seem stressed. Please note you may need to specifically request straws and the restaurant prefers cash therefore I recommend it for payment over a card. read more

If I could put -2 stars I would.... the service is horrible, people are constantly quitting mid shift and the hostess or waitress, or whatever she was, was extremely rude gave us 4 cups of tap water had us waiting for 45 mins where others that had sat and ordered long after us were getting served. Finally when a group of sorority girls that arrived while we were still waiting on our order came in and received their food 10 mins after sitting down we decided to leave.... upon walking out the door the hostess or whatever she was said rudely did you pay for your order I was completely done with this place.... The food was good as always. However, our waitress was extremely rude when we tried to politely inquire why our food took an hour. As we watched the entire restaurant including six groups that ordered after us get not only their food but also milkshakes and other deserts, her only response was , "That is not my problem, you have your food now. You can take the check up when you're ready." Obviously, no tip, and I do not plan to return to one of my previously favorite restaurants if this is the way that they treat their paying customers. The Grill has a typical diner menu to a point, and then add some specialty items. The Reuben sandwich was very good, and not greasy as many are. The fries were excellent as were the kosher dolls. The waitress was fantastic and very attentive. My primary issue was the health rating. I didn't notice it until I was leaving. It's 81, which is a very low B. Greasy spoon diner classic in the heart of Downtown Athens. All the entrees are pretty standard, but their menu gem is the thick cut wedge fries and feta dipping sauce. You can put that sauce on anything. If all else, you must order the fries and sauce. Everything else on the menu is standard for a diner. The burgers aren't the best I've ever had, but they are certainly not the worst, either. The milkshakes are pretty decent, but they aren't gourmet or anything either. Typical college-town "greasy spoon" fare. Their fries were overcooked (in MY opinion) and kind of weird... But MAN is that feta sauce ever addictive! I thought it was better with their onion rings (which are way better than their fries). I'd probably order that if you're between the two. The milkshake my sis had (chocolate) was creamy/dreamy perfection. And hey, they made me a diet coke with cherry syrup. Yummm. The waitress was friendly & efficient. Wasn't wowed by this place, but didn't expect to be. Definitely go try the feta sauce & onion rings!
