The ocean view is easily the best thing about this restaurant, because the food and service certainly aren't carrying the experience. Service was slow, and despite our server writing everything down, two people at our table were brought completely different meals than what they actually ordered. Not minor mistakes or missing sides -- entirely wrong meals. Then came the fries. They were accidentally brought to our table, we were told we could have them, some were eaten, and then the server came back and took them away. Apparently even the fries realized they were at the wrong table and left. I ordered the $25 grilled chicken BLT, and the chicken was so overcooked and dry it was basically chicken jerky. For $25, I expected a decent sandwich, not something that required determination and strong jaw muscles to finish. Overall, overpriced, underwhelming food with service to match. There was nothing advertised or in their website to indicate they had one, let alone what it was. When we arrived for dinner, before we even sat down, we were asked what we wanted to drink. ?? We were the. presented with only their usual menu. There was no supplement about the xmas menu and the server didn't offer it to us. I had to ask before a separate card was presented to us. A wonderful dining experience at the Grill at 41 North in downtown Newport. This occasion was particularly special as our friend was returning to Taiwan. From the moment we arrived, we were warmly greeted by the Food and Beverage Manager, Yahaira. She is a delightful young lady--sweet, kind, and friendly, yet very professional. To start, we chose the bread service and Caviar Osetra. Unlike many places that serve a 'cheap version' of caviar with chips, here it was served in a classic way with homemade Bellinis--truly impressive! For our next course, we had smoked salmon (which also came with homemade Bellinis), tuna tartare (freshly made, topped with a delightful aioli, and accompanied by homemade wonton chips), oysters (served with a special crushed ice mignonette), and a kale salad (the best salad in town so far!). For our entrées, Chef Alia recommended her favorite: the Tomahawk steak, perfectly sliced and served with bone marrow. We also enjoyed scallops and a whole steamed lobster. The pacing of the meal was perfect; we never felt rushed and could savor every bite. We started with cocktails and then moved to an exceptional selection of wines. Yacht a view! This is a beautiful lunch spot located on the water in Newport, RI. We feasted on classic lobster rolls, perfectly crispy fries and mildly sweet coleslaw (see photo). Yuuummmm! We walked from our hotel as parking is very limited. I made a reservation online a couple of weeks in advance. We arrived 30 minutes early and the kind, agreeable hostess graciously let us pick our table. We chose a shaded one near the water with beautiful views of yachts and sailboats (see photo). We had a reservation for Christmas Eve at 7pm. We were seated promptly near table by the windows as I had requested. Hostess was very personable. The waiter was pleasant and took our appetizer orders and main entree selections. But the lobster was good. -Clam Chowder: 4/5- Very good flavor, the bowl it comes in is comically large for the portion size. -Bucatini Carbonara: 2/5- I was very impressed with this dish...because it was very bland. We visited Newport for the weekend and walked in as a party of five. We were warmly greeted by the hostess, Delvina, and our server, Srdan, was fantastic from start to finish. Midway through our meal, the Director of Restaurants, Norman, stopped by to introduce himself. What an incredible touch--he personally greeted every table, which we absolutely loved. The views are amazing, but dinner was underwhelming. Due to a private event, we were seated on the back patio where they had all the tent sides up even though it was low 40s. When we asked the waitstaff to light the heaters it seemed like a huge inconvenience to them. In fact, serving us at all seemed like an inconvenience and we barely saw our waiter. We shared waitstaff and a bar with the private event meaning that restaurant patrons were waiting 30-40 minutes for drinks. Really unorganized and unprofessional. The food was overpriced, cold, and small. The pictures don't do it justice but the portion sizes were laughable for the price of the meal. We waited so long for our food and for it to come out freezing cold was unacceptable. Too bad our waiter never came back for us to send it back. We will not be back. We came here primarily because dogs are allowed. The restaurant is on a pier, enclosed on the top by a giant roofed pergola, which was great because it was raining. There are heaters and speakers at regular intervals in the ceiling so it was toasty warm . Music was a little too loud for the upscale ambience they are going for. Do you want to be a fun waterfront bar or do you want to be a fancy waterfront restaurant that charges $42 for a 4 oz piece of tuna with no sides? Pick a lane. Once we got over the sticker shock, we did enjoy our meal. The server was great, the tuna was exquisite and the lobster risotto was pretty good, if a little too salty/risotto not quite the right texture. The table side of fries for the table was an enormous serving. The coconut lemon tart for dessert was yummy. The bill for two was $180. Was quite possibly the best meal I have had in quite some time. We were a few days without power so we checked into a hotel in Newport and joined our friends who were staying at 41 North for dinner. Since none of us had running water, flushable toilets nor a hot meal in a few days, we decided to splurge and made reservations at the Grill. From the moment we walked in, we knew this was going to be an incredible experience. From the dimly lit dining room to the ocean views to the increible cocktails and menu... we were in heaven. The service was hands down 5 stars. They checked in on us, coursed out our meal appropriately and gave us the attention we needed but the space we desired. Here is a run down of the meal and in order as they hit the table. Every single dish was 5 stars and cooked perfectly. Everything is served a la cart so we got a bunch of everything and we enjoyed it all family style. Firstly, we walked without making a reservation but knew they had tables available on open table. The hostess initially said they were fully reserved for the night even though there were empty seats everywhere. Then we told her that we knew there were open slots on open table. She then said there was one available in ten mins. She made the reservation for us to come back in ten mins, again even though there were only 2 people dining there. Anyways we came back after having a drink and got seated. Food was Aok. Got the calamari and NY strip steak. Calamari was good but the sauce was Aok. The steak was alright as well, nothing great about it or the price we paid for it. The sides are 12$ and you have to pay an extra 6$ for the sauce. Overall the experience was average. Went here for Newport Spring Restaurant Week with two of my pals (thank goodness for the RW menu.. this place is PRICY and we are three twentysomething millennial gals on a budget!), and had a lovely time! Forty 1 North is a gorgeous hotel / restaurant, with billion dollar views of the ocean and fancy schmancy mega yachts (though I do recommend visiting before those pull in for the summer, as the aforementioned billion dollar view is then obscured..). This is a great place to go for a special meal or memorable night out, and even though I haven't been in a while, it was just as good as I remember it. There were many yummy choices available on the Restaurant Week menu - $50 per person for three courses - and it was tough to decide! I started with the Tuna Tartare appetizer, which was a decent sized portion. I actually couldn't even finish it! It tasted like a spicy tuna sushi roll sans rice, and was served with wonton crisps and marinated cucumber. I could see myself coming here and ordering this if I feel like treating myself to a light lunch later in the warmer months. My favorite course was my entree, which was a Smoked Eggplant platter. In addition to the perfectly flavorful eggplant, the plate also featured roasted red peppers, shishito peppers, fennel, and crispy quinoa-chickpea fritters that tasted like falafel, only better. Whoever said the vegetarian option was the lesser choice seriously hasn't tried the Smoked Eggplant at Forty 1 North. The dessert, though, was the big letdown. I peeked at the menu before coming because I wanted to see what was on tap for dinner, and was stoked when I saw that Coconut Cake was offered as a dessert option. However, what arrived at the table was definitely NOT coconut cake. No frosting. No shaved coconut flakes. Big sad trombone noises all around. If the menu billed the dessert as a citrus or coconut pound cake or olive oil cake, it would have been a much more accurate depiction, and it's not that I didn't like the cake, but it just wasn't what I was expecting. My friends got the Chocolate Ganache Cake and the Creme Brulee, and those looked a lot better. There's always next time! That being said, the service was excellent and everyone that took care of us was phenomenal. From the front desk agent that greeted us as we arrived, to the bartender, who expertly prepared tasty Red Sangria and Aperol Spritzes for us, to our server, who patiently explained the various dishes on offer for the Restaurant Week menu, everything was top notch. I booked here because last week, there weren't many places left to reserve for dinner. When I made the reservation, I clicked standard seating not outdoor seating and it said outdoor was unavailable, which was fine because we wanted inside. I called earlier in the day to change the reservation to later and this was no problem. When we got there, we were seated outside and were told there was an indoor party. This was a surprise and I should have been made aware of this. It was nasty out, cold, and wet. We should have been notified that there was a party inside and we would no longer be able to sit inside. If we knew we would be outside we would have dressed accordingly, we also were the fanciest dressed, no one adheres to dress code - people were there in short denim shorts and sneakers. Onto the food, the "complimentary" fried calamari was average and nothing special. The prices are so high and you don't get a side included. Very overpriced and frankly, nervy. All the other food was very good. We ordered the tuna steak - cooked perfectly, the squid ink linguini, the rib eye steak, and the half roasted chicken. We ordered a side salad which was a nice size portion and creamed spinach. My steak did come out medium well after asking for medium rare. When paying $56 for a piece of meat, it should be cooked perfectly. The Maitre'd / manager quickly (under 5 min) brought out another steak which was cooked perfectly. For drinks we ordered the margarita, the vinho verde, and rose. The vinho verde may be my new favorite wine. We aren't sure if we would be back but if you go on a nice night, sitting outside isn't an issue and would probably be beautiful. read more

This spot is awesome in an Instagram-ably trendy kind of way but the food isn't worth the money. The longer: we came with a party of 7 for Sunday brunch and had a great table right on the water. Our waitress was rude and had zero personality. It took her 30 minutes to take our order. We shared sides of sweet potatoes, asparagus & bacon for the table. I ordered a salad with salmon-- and the salad was brought to the table with no salmon. The waitress never acknowledged or apologized for the mistake (the manager did deliver it and take the salmon off the bill- which was nice). The food was good, but not in correlation with the prices. This restaurant is very welcoming with a nice modern decor with a nice oval bar. The menu is pricey, but it is what you expect for a great chef on the water in Newport. The bar menu prices were quite shocking to say the least. Cocktails range from $16 to $21 and your average beers were $8 each. Wine prices were not too bad, starting at $14. We went to the Fermentation class on Wednesday at 6:30, which they do every Wednesday night for $35 per person. They have five small plates that pair with white and red wines. The food was absolutely amazing and the wines paired well with each dish. The wine wasn't my favorite when you tried it without the food, but when complimented with the dish, it was great. Be prepared to eat something two hours later or finish off the night with a dinner in Newport. I wasn't hungry when I left, but an I needed to eat something later. Arrived on a Saturday afternoon for lunch at 1pm as my friend and I waited for our room to be ready at the hotel. We went outside and said to the two hostesses we'd like to sit for lunch. One rudely said "the bar is full..." though we saw plenty of open tables and lounge seating. We told her we would seat ourselves in the lounge chairs. Realizing we didn't have menus, I went up to the hostess stand and seeing a stack of menus, asked for one. The hostess told me to get one from the bar. Meanwhile, throughout our lunch, we saw her seating other guests on the patio and giving them menus. The food was mediocre and overpriced. My friend had to send her burger back twice for being undercooked and then settled on shrimp cocktail. We were advised by other guests that the lobster roll wasn't good. We'd already made a previous dinner reservation for the restaurant so we came back again. Dinner was a better experience. The servers and bartenders were lovely, the managers were apologetic. The two blonde hostesses should be fired. They looked miserable and acted like it too. Come for the drinks and view and get food elsewhere. read more

We should have listened to the reviews on here about the service before booking a Saturday night reservation. The location is amazing but that it quite literally it. The server we had did not care at all. Not only about us but the people who sat next to us who were not greeted for 30 mins even after going up to the hostess 2x. He never checked in -- when he made numerous mistakes and forgot things he laughed it off and did not apologize. All of this for the most expensive place in town. All of this could have been spared by some solid food and drinks.... Some flavorless chicken, cold sides and bland pasta to top it off. Our Mai tais were bad too. I'm sure there were better menu options so this might not be represitivr of the food as a whole -- however if you are looking for a nice place to for a date . Don't come here. So...at first glance I was really excited to eat here because of the awesome looking menu. It was a party of eight and we were seated really quickly in a semi-private room across from the bar. We first ordered rows of drinks which were all perfectly made. I had the old fashioned with makers, which was a bit on the sweeter side, but still very good. A few others got wine off of their extensive wine list. For my appetizer I had the smoked salmon which came with a few pieces of bread, radish, and cucumber. Easily, a five out of five. For my main a few of us split the porterhouse and got mashed potatoes, creamed spinach, and Brussels sprouts as sides. All the sides were awesome. The steak on the other hand was over cooked to burnt. We ordered it medium-rare and a lot of the edge pieces were burnt, the rest was either well done or medium-well. This review is solely based on lunch during Restaurant Week. It was a rainy weekday and the place was pretty empty except for a couple of people at the bar. I was meeting with a group of fellow military spouses and was greeted as soon as I walked it and quickly picked up any drink orders as we were waiting for the rest of our group by the fireplace. I decided to try out the Marisa Tomei; it was a like a fruity Cosmopolitan but on the stronger side, great drink! Once all in our group arrived, we were seated. There were 2 options for the first course. 3 choices for the main course, and just one for the dessert. I went with the mushroom soup for the first course, and the salmon rillettes for the second; the dessert was something called Pavlova. The mushroom soup was very creamy and you can taste the mushroom flavor, and I liked the the dollop of creme fraiche and chives to round out the flavor. The rillettes are similar to pâté and came with small potato pancakes and a side of pickled onions; the salmon was really tasty and the pickled onions were a nice compliment. I honestly wasn't sure what to expect from dessert since I've never had pavlova before; I'm usually not a fan of meringue but it went well with the kiwi/pinapple salad and bed of cream. I enjoyed it a lot more than I thought I would. No complaints on the service and was happy with my experience. Just might swing by again for another Marisa Tomei during the summer! read more

This was my first visit and I have to say it was a serious let down. The only reason it gets 3 stars is because the beautiful views, and they comped our drinks because we were unhappy. The disappointment started with the service. I felt like our server was put off by having to speak with us. It was as if we were inconveniencing her by coming to this establishment. She check on us maybe three times, once to take our order, once after our meals were delivered wrong (twice), and to bring the check. I understand it's busy and I don't really need anything just pretend like you care about having a job, a lot of people are suffering right now. Now the food: eh. I got the half chicken, which is literally a greased up dry half chicken. No sauce. Nothing. Just chicken and oil. My boyfriend got the tomahawk pork chop, which he enjoyed. Had to order sauce on the side, which he didn't care for. We got mashed potatoes for a side. Although they did bring us corn, green beans, and maybe rice...which all didn't look to hot anyway. The potatoes were good. For the amount of money this place charges it should be better. Overall wouldn't return. read more
