Well...this is truly disappointing. Thanksgiving dinner buffet at $38 a person...cold food, no drink refills, and a rather dreary atmosphere. I have been coming to Hartfeld for thanksgiving for probably 10 years. It's always been amazing. Not sure what happened here today. No music playing, very small selection of food. In previous years the buffet was festive and took up the entire enclosed patio area. This year there were 6-8 "S" shaped tables with 2-3 foods on each. The carving station was in the corner and was very small. I have to say that it almost looks and feels like they forgot that today was thanksgiving and rushed to throw something together. I won't say that I won't come back, but I'm going to call first and not assume that this is the go to place for thanksgiving anymore. Very disappointed. read more

There are two dishes I can ALWAYS count on at the Hartefeld: 1. Crab & Avocado Crostini appetizer -- perfectly crisp artesian bread with lump crab, avocado, and a bit of cocktail sauce that brings it all together very nicely. I often get this as my meal. 2. The "Filet & Wedge" -- a wedge of iceberg lettuce, a sliced filet mignon, bacon, tomatoes, blue cheese crumbles and a creamy blue cheese dressing. OMG! Divine! Yummy! read more

I am tempted to give this place less than five stars, but the food is so delicious that it makes up for its spotty customer service. I'll start with the negative, just so I can get it out of the way. The service is pretty bad. Our waitress was pretty inattentive. She also messed up our order. Now for the good parts. The food was amazing. We got the half-price appetizers. All of it- the wings, the quesadillas, the shrimp, and especially the nachos- oh the delicious nachos! They are so good. We also got dessert. We got a huge brownie sundae. Out of this world delicious. My other favorite part of Hartefeld is the atmosphere. In the summer you can sit outside and look at the beautiful golf course. In the winter, they have a nice bar area and a cozy sit-down spot in the den. I would definitely recommend this restaurant to anyone in the DE/PA area. read more

Right on the border where Delaware meets Pennsylvania at Avondale, Hartefeld is a Country club, restaurant + golf club housed in a historic former stone manor. It holds a sizeable banquet room and outdoor bar area to host weddings and special events. The grounds are beautifully kept and the indoor décor is old money blue blood-esque. For members and the public alike, you can dine in their restaurant, bar area and a roomy patio space that overlooks the golf course. A few years ago, they used to have a deliciously cozy, well-executed menu (back then, the restaurant was also part of the 1492 hospitality group that included the lovely Columbus Inn in downtown Wilmington, DE - now sadly long closed)- contemporary american options (crab crusted swordfish, filet mignon, massive salads) mixed in with bar favorites (whimpy burgers, nachos, wings). Now, it seems like the kitchen has taken a turn for the worse. They've changed the menu (and the chefs, obviously) to focus more on bar-type foods - and the result is generic and disappointing. Even their once noteworthy Sunday brunch has been downsized-both in quality and value. Perhaps the outcropping of McMansions that now surround its once empty rolling hills and countryside has something to do with it... perhaps because the 1492 restaurant group dissolved to focus more on golfing properties than their culinary pursuits... whatever the reason, this place is now only worth it for après-golf libations and munchies. read more

My Mom had a gift certificate to Hartefeld, so she brought my husband and I here for dinner Tuesday night, which is also all you can eat pasta night. We did not go for that option, but loved the cozy ambience of the dining room. We started with the duck spring rolls and the fried calamari. The fried calamari tasted like nothing. The duck spring rolls were very good and I do not even really like duck! I had the butternut squash soup and a salad. The soup was very rich, so rich that I could not eat a lot of my Cobb salad. My husband had the Whimpie Burgers (one of his favorite offerings of Delaware) and my Mom had a caprese salad. For dessert, we shared the peanut butter bomb. The food was good, not great. We also did not technically order any entrees. I would go back - I think Hartefeld is a nice option for Hockessin/Pike Creek residents looking for something a little different! read more

The Grille and Pub is located at Hartefeld National golf course. This used to be a private club, but recently became public. They have a really nice dining room with a lot of upscale choices on the menu. The service is also extremely friendly. I also enjoy dinning in the bar area. The drink prices are very fair, and the bar menu has a nice selection of soups and various appetizers. The chicken quesadillas are excellent. They also have recently added a large outside patio where you can sit and have drinks, or full dinners. On the weekends they have live entertainment outside as well. This is a great place to visit if you have never been. Even if you are not a member, you will start to feel like one, as the staff will not treat you any differently. read more

This is a laid back and family friendly high quality bar and grille. The restaurant serves a lot of community members and is friendly toward the kiddies. Excellent children's menu (my little Mr. Picky loves the fries, chocolate milk, and kid's Sundae. But who am I kidding so do I) The wings are great. The ahi poke stack is phenomenal. Pair it with the Joel Gott Sauvignon. You won't be disappointed. Service is occasionally sketchy, that's true, especially during peak months. My family and I made reservations for the brunch buffet with Santa this past weekend. It was a complete disappointment. We have done this same brunch multiple times and the kids really enjoyed it. Unfortunately, this time was horrible. The website and restaurant clearly stated the brunch was 10:00 to 2:00. We made our reservation for 1:00. When we got there it looked like most of the food had been sitting for hours, they did not replenish any of the food on the buffet. They actually ran out of some things because we had to ask for if they would be putting more out. We basically were eating the scraps for $40+ a person. The service was horrible. You couldn't get your water refilled. There were no Christmas activities for the children. Apparently, they had Christmas cookie decorating but of course just stopped putting more decorations and cookies out for the children who were not there early enough. Santa actually left while we were eating! it was a complete shit show. There were at least two managers and I can not believe this was acceptable for them. One manager actually went around the table interrogating our children to see how old they were. I guess to make sure anyone over 4 did not get a free meal. Which all the kids should have gotten a free meal in my opinion considering the nasty conditions of the children's buffet (ketchup all over the table, clumpy crusty mac and cheese). I understand it was brunch but don't advertise it is to 2:00 if you are going to shut it down before 1:00. If you are willing to pay this type of money for a nice brunch, I suggest you skip Hartefeld and go to the other similar clubs in the area. My family and I will never eat here again which is unfortunate because we used to enjoy the grill and pub. read more

This restaurant and bar has so much potential, but they always fall short!! I moved into the neighborhood over seven years ago and things have really changed. The quality of the food has significantly gone downhill as the prices continue to rise. My biggest complaint is that most of the staff is not friendly, arrogant at times and tend to cater to the older, male golf members. I guess this would be acceptable if the restaurant/bar was private, but it is not. A simple smile and a friendly greeting would go a long, long way!!! This is heavily directed to the bar staff. My neighbors and I agree that we'd rather drive into Kennett or Hockessin for a drink or dinner than to be treated like second class citizens at a place within walking distance. I think this says a lot. I believe it is a huge loss for Hartefeld National because there are over 350 homes in the neighborhood !!!! read more

We frequent the pub but lately the servers and bartenders seem annoyed and very clueless on basic operations. You are given several menus depending on where you sit Our filet and tuna steak was rushed to us as if they wanted to get us out of there and to make matters worse both were extremely undercooked. Service is terrible. The oldest server on the floor is a teenager. We sat for 30 minutes before we were even offered water. The only reason I give it the 3 stars was the food. It was better than average, although my wife's steak was served lukewarm. I had the crab cakes, they were tasty buy served in a buttery corn chowder soup that was a little heavy and unnecessarily unhealthy for my taste. Watch the happy hour prices. We arrived at happy hour and we were charged full price for our drinks. Decent atmosphere and cool old building. It is cold in the winter so dress warm. We celebrated a birthday and Anniversary Saturday night at Hartefeld, The Grille & Pub. The appetizer (nachos) were delicious along with our entrees! The Executive Chef was hospitable and our food and service was exceptional! (The servers were attentive and did not rush us) Afterwards, the treat, was the superb entertainment of the Hard Rock Candy band! This was a missed opportunity by many as the bar area was sparse and the music made for an excellent evening. The fire pits, on the terrace, were perfect for the cooler evening and we enjoyed after dinner relaxing by them. It made for a memorable celebration! The reasons I did not rate a 5 star: The coffee served with dessert was mildly warm and the fire pit area had a couple of empty bottles of beer (left by a lazy patron not cleaning up) of which we almost knocked over. Nonetheless, we look forward to returning! OH! I almost forgot to mention the large screen TV which broadcasted the Preakness! It was exciting to share the event with the other dinner guests and staff! read more
