Best meal we've had in Charleston. Their version of seafood paella was really perfect. The fried fish was crispy perfect. The head on shrimp were fresh and delicious. The clams were sweet. The Carolina gold rice was chewy and flavorful. The portion was perfect for two people. We had a corn pudding as an appetizer which was more like a mousse with sage, but really delicious. The tomato and peach salad was pretty bland; will probably be excellent in a month. The service was good and the atmosphere was hip but not too pretentious. read more

The eggplant was absolutely unique, the okra was fresh and a wonderful take on southern food, the pasta was made in-house, the peaches with goat cheese was definitely something to write home about. Great little find on our trip to Charleston! I was excited to try this place as I really appreciate "farm to table" style restaurants. Our server was super sweet (so sorry I can't recall his name right now) very friendly and gave great suggestions. The menu is seasonal and changes daily based on what they can get fresh in that day. We started with the roasted peaches. Iv never had fresher or juicer peaches. The shashito peppers goat cheese and granola was a wonder surprising touch to the dish. We wanted to do a bit of "surf and turf" so we opted for the whole snapper and the lamb sausage to all share. The presentation of the snapper alone was jaw dropping! The fennel and olive garnishes with salads verde really complimented the snapper and did not over power the taste of the extremely fresh fish. The lamb sausage was really great as well. The only negative is they are currently only doing outdoor seating and there was a bit of an issue with the flies once our food arrived. Understand this is the be expected when dining outside so if this is something that could bother you wait until they open indoor dinning again, but do give this place a try! read more

Outstanding dining experience! They have a small menu that changes daily. Everything is fresh and perfectly portioned, and our service was fantastic. We started with fried oysters that were topped with housemade bread and butter pickles--so freaking good. They serve a couple of slices of freshly baked bread (still warm) with some of the best butter I've tasted. For the main: I had tilefish with pickled shrimp, leeks and sun chokes. My husband had a pork chopped sourced from Keegan Filion (local) farm, and it was one of the best pork chops I've ever tasted. We went here this past weekend and I had high expectations given the reviews and the fact the chef was a James Beard nominee. There were four of us and we ordered a variety of dishes. Some were executed nicely, others not so much. My biggest problem with our dining experience is the limited menu options. If you don't want a meat entree and instead wanted several apps for dinner, you're left with eating several small salads or veggie side dishes. I had ordered the warm shrimp salad and roasted carrots/radishes--shrimp salad was ok but too heavy. Roasted carrots/radishes were overly cooked and heavily seasoned. My friend ordered the pork chop and said it was dry, my fiancé ordered the short rib and liked it but the accompanying veggies were under cooked. I think the concept of this place is interesting but based on our experience I don't think I would dine here or recommend. I would rate this place 3.5 stars. read more

The food was fabulous! We thoroughly enjoyed the maitake mushrooms, charred broccoli and pea angliotti! They were all unique and super tasty! We also really liked the fried oysters and wooden roasted shrimps. But maitake was certainly our fav! And the bread, right out off the oven, steamy!!! I love this place. The food and service gets an A+ from me. I am a vegetarian and they had plenty of options. I ordered from the produce list and every thing was amazing. They have a very creative way of cooking and combining the vegetables. We ordered the Winter Roots, Cabbage, Maitake, Agnolotti and the bread all excellent options. Our waitress Blanca was great! She was so sweet and welcoming and very attentive. She was very knowledgeable about the menu. We had such a positive experience here we wish we had more time so we could've come back. A very interesting place. Walked past this restaurant for years when I lived down there, and it was the only place with an open reservation time when we went, so why not? A very interesting menu heavy on the mushrooms, which we were very into at the time. Our waiter was absolutely incredible and may have been the best part of the meal, with great recommendations and nudges on food and wine choices. Again, I like the menu - lots of different choices of well-written and well thought-out and unique ingredients. I've never had caviar on a hash brown square anywhere else in Charleston. But the food sort of left us wanting for the price point. Caviar was probably my favorite dish. The cabbage was just sort of flat which is a real shame. And the gnocchi were pillowy but not memorable beyond that. The decorations leave you even more wanting...they need some serious sprucing up on the inside. Basically the only decoration is a cabinet of canned and jarred goods, but these should be all around the restaurant, especially with a name like The Grocery. Needs much more character! Overall, better in concept than it is in practice, I hate I didn't enjoy this place. read more

Five of us went to dinner on a weekday. Joey was our server. He knew his menu and was able to explain in detail the primary flavors associated with each entree. He made great suggestions. We each had a different meal. We were provided water, bread and our adult beverages while we waited for the main course. All the meals arrived in good time. Each was more delicious than the other. I had the short ribs which came with broccolini and potatoes. Desert. You must leave room for desert. The 5 of us split three, and I was not polite about who was getting more than me. The strawberry ice cream was the best I have ever had. I think Joey said it was home made. The other two deserts were equally delicious. A really delicious simple spot with a fun very brunch- appropriate playlist on Saturday morning. Also very accommodating to two gals from with dietary restrictions. The pan roasted shrimp on dirty rice my friend had was super flavorful with a great looking salsa verde. I opted for the breakfast plate sans sausage. A warm melt in your mouth biscuit served with sunny side up eggs wasn't the most colorful meal but, YOLO. I was in the South! I was pretty excited to come here for dinner and it did not disappoint. Started off with the steak tartare for appetizers. It was definitely not what I had expected; it looked more like the texture of ground beef than the usual super thin slices that I was used it. It still tasted pretty delicious though I had actually preferred my friends cornmeal dusted fried oysters. I had the duck breast as my entree, which was served with grilled peach slices and corn pudding. The duck was cooked well, but I loved the peach and pudding which was a unique touch! I topped dinner off with the frozen lemon menringue pie, which was probably the perfect amount of food. All in all, a great experience! They have limited free parking in a lot next door after 6pm, which is convenient in the city. read more

First I started with an appetizer the corn suflee it might be called something else it was amazing on a scale of 1-10 it would receive an 8 the reason being I love texture in my mouth but not purée. It need some crunch the flavor was amazing and at this point I'm waiting on my second appetizer which showed up after the main course was served. it was good but it was to late! Then their was the cocktails now for me, every Resturant that advertises cocktails needs to be familiar with classic cocktails. My favorite is the side car if your a bartender you should perfect this simple cocktail it is an amazing drink to serve and to be able to perfect. Then my main dish was the red snapper and I'm expecting one hell of a meal because I ordered the most expensive thing on the menu my husband had the steak he always orders that I'm waiting for this amazing dish it was an epic fail. Why because if your waitress states you been in business 10 years. I would think you would put your most amazing dishes on display. First the snapper was fried different so I'm excited then it only was flavorful on the outside. I have this big fish with no flavor and they give me a green mustard I'm thinking this must be the flavor no it was not! The dish was served with potatoes and onions. I would have preferred a gravy or sauce that enhances the food mixed with the potatoes and onions. I told the waitress this was my first time at the restaurant and I go around rate Restaurants she completely missed that this restaurant was not a favorite of mine it was not a complete failure. Just off King Street on Cannon Street is one of Charleston's newest restaurants, The Grocery. If I am capturing this correctly The Grocery is designed to reflect grocery stores of long ago. Where people came to chat, set a spell, break bread together, share stories, food and visit. We did just that. Joined by another couple all four of us were a tad nervous when we entered the restaurant and there were just a few tables seated. Ut-oh, we thought, this could have been a bad choice. An empty restaurant is never a good sign. Boy, were we mistaken. I have to say that our server was one of the most knowledgeable that we've come across here in the Low Country. She had a casual, easy going style while suggesting menu items, but certainly didn't push us, which was nice. After she explained The Grocery's concept we started to review the menu to see what we would "share" at the table. The menu is divided into "snacks", "bites", "tastes", "plates", "table", and "side" options. As you go through the options they escalate in price. We decided to choose a few things from the "snacks" ($4-$13) and "bites" ($9-$13). Our server explained that the portions would be on the small side, which good to know. When our appetizers arrived it was nice to see that a lot of thought was put into what they would be served in. No white plate ware at this place. The plating on crocks, old fashioned coke bottles and casserole dishes did not go unnoticed. It actually was a great touch. We were all hungry and ordered several appetizers. The Charred Onion Dip with Kettle Chips was outstanding - a great flavor, but not over powering. The homemade kettle chips were also terrific. The Fried Oysters were also a plus. Placed back in their shells with a spicy deviled egg sauce and topped with sweet house made pickles was a great compliment. The 'Piggy Plate' though, stole the show. On a small 'pig shaped' cutting board arrived some of the best items of the evening. House made 'City Ham', pork cheeks, mortadella, and pates along with sweet and sour pickles, pickled radishes, crostini and hearty grain mustard were to die for. This is an item I would highly recommend since we almost fought over the last pieces. Unfortunately the 'Crispy Pimento Cheese' was overcooked, small cheese balls that were mostly breading and not-much cheese. I would pass on this bite. They had zero flavor at best. Our entrees were selected from the "tastes" section of the menu. Again the presentation was impressive. I had the Pappardelle, Pancetta, Parsley and Poached Egg dish which was served in a small crock like dish and looked beautiful. For some reason I thought that the egg would be incorporated into the dish but it wasn't and it sat on top of the pasta. Our server told us that it was "their take on a carbonara" and to mix the egg into the pasta. Being not my cup of tea I passed on this option. Although flavorful the dish was over seasoned with pepper and the pasta was overcooked. The Tile Fish special dish of the evening was perfectly cooked and served with brussel sprouts. Although the server informed us that the "tastes" section of the menu would be "about 4 ounces" that's a lot smaller than you'd think. Our entrees, though tasty, were also tiny for the price. The Beef Short Ribs were fall-off-the bone tender, though miniscule. The bone marrow served on the side did not receive any positive reviews, but that's just a matter of personal taste. Lastly, the 'suggestion' of Lamb Shoulder with Chick Peas and Sautéed Greens was flavorful, but again, very small (mostly shoulder and not a lot of lamb). There was also a piece of house made sausage on the plate that was very good, but didn't seem to be a good match for the dish. I guess you could say that about all of our dishes. The accompanying items to our entrees made us wonder how they "fit" with the main items on the plate. Not that they didn't taste good, they just didn't seem to fit with the entrees. We also shared a Cauliflower Casserole and Roasted Root Vegetables as side dishes that were ample for the table - pricey, but ample ($8.00 each). All in all I liked The Grocery a bunch. I do, however feel that their "Tastes" section of the menu are overpriced. The Tile Fish special was smaller than a deck of cards and my pasta was about of a cup. My advice would be to stick with the "Snacks" and "Bites". BTW our concerns when we first arrived and the restaurant was empty were quickly squashed. The Grocery stole my heart the second I walked in for a Sunday brunch. The atmosphere and decor are inviting and not overwhelming. It's tasteful and simple, with plenty of open space so the place feels surprisingly large and roomy. I got a vanilla berry stuffed french toast which was superbly done- not overwhelmingly sweet or heavy, but pleasantly refreshing, with lots of fresh fruit and just enough thick strawberry syrup...(I hesitate to call it syrup, it was more of a preserve?) to give it enough sweet without overwhelming the toast, vanilla stuffing, or fresh berries. It wasn't heavy and didn't leave me feeling stuffed and gross, but pleasantly full. Everything was super fresh, no artificial syrups, and the french toast wasn't drowning in butter or whipped cream or anything. It was really phenomenal, high quality breakfast. My dining companion got green eggs and ham, which she also gave a high review. Then as we finished our meals, to our surprise, we were asked if we wanted churros. Churros? For brunch? Well, why not? Excellent life choice. Amazing. I'm not a churro expert but they came with three phenomenal sweet dipping sauces, and I highly recommend them. Churros don't really come to mind when I think of enticing dessert foods, or well, they didn't until now. The Grocery has firmly put them on my radar and they are not to be passed up. If they ask if you want churros, the answer is yes. All around great service, great food, great atmosphere. read more

Can't say enough about our wonderful experience at this spot. We actually visited twice to sample all the great vegetable forward options as my wife is a vegetarian. I did also sample some of the seafood and nonvegitarian pasta dishes. Sat at the bar and had wonderful service from our bartender Scottie. The Chef came out and greeted us on both occasions and gave us great tips on other great food places in Charleston. If you are looking for more of a "farm to table" restaurant with great wines and some vegetarian options to break up the more typical Charleston area cuisine (don't get me wrong, love shrimp n grits, she crab soup...) then give this place a try. read more

"Hello. Here for dinner. Just me." After looking in a half-full table area, and mostly empty bar area, she asked me to sit at the bar. -1 star. Sat at the bar, which was relatively quiet. Bartender was nice and talented. I couldve eaten a cow but decided to go slow. Squid with negro spaghetti was fabulous. +1. The bar got crowded, I had to shift over a seat. -1. Then I realize I left my wallet in my room. Gave my phone to the bar to hold. Thank you for your patience! +1. Told the hostess same. Negative vibes and no words. -1. This past week has been restaurant week and a couple that my boyfriend and I are friends with made a reservation for 4 at The Grocery and asked us if we wanted to go. Of course we said yes as we could not pass up an opportunity to try a new restaurant. We had a reservation at 8:30 and got there a little early so we were pointed to the bar for some drinks while we wait for our table. We each got a speacality drink. My boyfriend and my friend got the bicyclette, her boyfriend go the forgive and fernet and I got the dirty green tomato martini. I am not a huge martini fan but I absolutely loved this drink. We were seated around 8:45 (15 minutes after our reservation but it was not a problem because we all understood that it was a busy Friday night and restaurant week can make a restaurant very busy during the slow season) and we immediately knew what we were going to order. I ordered the chowder of fist for my appetizer, the slow roasted beef short rib as my entree, and for dessert I got the key lime ice cream. The appetizers came out and they were all delicious. The thing that I really like about The Grocery is that after we had finished our appetizers, the entrees did not come out immediately. It came out in a timely manner and gave us time to digest and converse with our friends. Usually during restaurant week they pump the food out and send you on your way but not here. Heres the short version: LOOOOVED IT!! LOVED IT LOVED IT LOVED IT LOVED IT! AND LOVED IT SOME MORE! Now for the details: I made a reservation for 2 on Open table for 8pm. I showed up at 7:15 with a party of 4 and, no problem, we were sat immediately. Our server Lauren and her follower "Aqua Ninja" were impeccable. They were all the things you think of when you think great table service. I liked how the bar was on one end and the tables were on the other. It gives the bar patrons plenty of room to amble and be a little loud without effecting the dining tables. The food: Hoooly Moley! The variety, flavors, plating, and creativity were all outstanding! We shared the Old MacDonald for openers which was 8 different house made meats with bread, pickled veggies, and really great mustard. Then came the Bone Marrow Brulee and Sweet Potato Tortellini. I would have liked to see more tortellini, but they were billed as "small plates". Both items were superb and super creative. Then we had a blue crab and pasta dish, roasted cauliflower dish, and a roasted beet dish. Our guests had the duck breast and the wagyu steak and we all shared. Every dish was a rock star on its own and together they were incredible. I was worried that the "small plates" might leave us hungry but by the end of it we were very full and very satisfied! We were also there for a birthday and were presented with a Moscato dessert wine for a toast and complimentary ice cream for the birthday girl. Considering we each had fancy cocktails, a table appetizer, 4 small plates, and the Moscato dessert wine on our check we stayed just under a hundred bucks which I thought was more than fair for the experience. I hope to be back sometime soon as this was a great dining experience and shouldnt be reserved just for fancy nights out. read more
