Been looking for an authentic British pub, but the reviews are concerning and deterring me :( UPDATE: After seeing the google reviews (not sure if yelp people are just grumpier ") but decided to give this place a try! Overall was solid! For those complaining about the food if you don't know, UK food tends to be very bland but this all had some good flavor. You can tell the owners listen because portion sizes were pretty good! Waking through Georgetown square looking for a drink after dinner, this place immediately caught our attention. Looked very cozy, charming and fitting addition to the square. Unfortunately upon entering we noticed a big red sticker of a failed health inspection in the front door. Being that we were only there for drinks we gave it the benefit of the doubt and went in. Couple of issues entailed, my friend ordered two beers off the tap. And they were completely flat. Ho hum, just another hiccup, it happens, went to try another off their tap and as well, it was flat. I tried their old fashion, which was only described as a bit disappointing, I've had better old fashions for much cheaper. Our bartender was very polite and attentive in asking us if we wanted another drink, which we did, but unfortunately just not there. I do hope the big red sticker is a wake up call and Management invests the necessary time and resources to pay more attention to having good beer on tap. They Need to focus on expanding and perfecting their cocktail menu. 14 dollars for a subpar cocktail in Georgetown is just too much. I would love to come back here and have a better experience, I could see this as the type of place where I would become a regular, as now though, that's a couple steps away. read more

Visited the Grumpy George just before Christmas with group of friends. It was a busy Friday night, but we managed to get seated pretty quickly. The place was dimly lit and cozy. There were several high top tables and a good amount of bar seating. Our group of four found ourselves a tad snug at our high top, but the shared experience added to the convivial vibe. Old Fashioneds were the drink of the night. They have a few varieties. We tried the original and sweeter versions - all were great! Ordered three fish and chips and one bangers and mash. Unfortunately, they were out of mashed potatoes for the bangers and mash, a minor setback that didn't overshadow the overall solid quality of the food. Considering it is a new spot, it's understandable they might be working out some details. Service is friendly, food and drinks are solid. I look forward to another visit. read more

Tried this brand new pub in downtown Georgetown last night 11/14/23) and it was amazing. The restaurant had great atmosphere and the staff were hustling the entire time with smiles and kind words. The food was over the top amazing. We had the Guinness pie and the Cornish pasties with the sticky toffee dessert. Pie crusts were flaky, meat was tender, veggies were tender but not mushy. Service was a bit slow but they get grace because the business is new, literally opened just one week and the place full so issues will happen. The menu was decent adequate with new items coming soon. The one thing I'd like to see is more brews. The beer menu was fine but when the business is a pub, I like to see a wide selection especially local brews. If something has to go get rid of the Bud-Coors products. read more

I looked over the beer menus, lots to choose from, and I picked a pint. Shortly after, I ordered "bangers & Mash. I went with the Cumberland sausage, creamy mashed potatoes and onion gravy with carrots. The beer took a little longer than it should have but I'm guessing they're still working out their game plan. Love the green of the Irish Pub! Been here twice in the past week. I date my girl friends to determine if a place is worthy enough to take my husband. Pleasantly surprised! Greeted the moment we walked in, no wait during the week about 5. Rebecca Creek Old Fashioned was excellent & I make an amazing old fashioned, so I was impressed! The shrimp appetizer was lightly breaded & crunchy, served with a tasty dipping sauce. We split the fish & chips. Wow! Excellent, flaky 7-8" piece of fish and crispy steak fries. The smashed peas was a traditional flare! Finished the early evening with their amazing bread pudding & ice cream. Tastes a lot like a gourmet spiced cake with some fresh vanilla bean ice cream & a nice Carmel sauce. Gordon Ramsey may have made suggestions but I have to give it to the owners & staff for keeping it going! The interior decor is fantastic & like I said, from the green bar stools to the green bar lights, it's a snazzy Irish pub, in the heart of Georgetown! If only I had gotten some photos. Was desperate to try this place out because I had heard that it was a British pub/restaurant fare. The beer selection here is on point if you're looking for a good quality Irish/English beers. The food is straight up, traditional English with all of the staples, fish and chips, shepherds pie, and some good fried seafood. We were greeted at the door and had really wonderful service. Absolutely loved our waiter. The ambience of the restaurant was mellow yet was absolutely a dive bar atmosphere family friendly but not a whole Lotta kid items here if you're looking for something to get for the Kiddos. Overall for great spot for some great beer. My only complaint was everything is obviously deeply fried and there's no salad or lighter options if you're looking for something healthy. Their grumpy burger is freaking delicious but I'm frustrated that there's no onion lettuce or tomatoes to go with a burger just meat, cheese and bun. If you're into that this is your spot but if you like a little bit of green or something crisp to go with your burger this place will not be for you. read more

Willing to give another chance in a few months. Posting this as someone who spent three years in England... best years of my life. Kitchen definitely needs to sort itself out. Food took forever to come to the table and when it did I could tell that mine had sat a while; both the chips and fish were lukewarm. The pastie on the other hand was steaming hot, just like from the kiosks at Kings Cross in London. Wife and I ordered beer; Newcastle Ale was served in a bottle, not a pint glass. Oh well. Service could also improve: Only saw the server twice - to take the order and deliver the beer. No refill of water, no checking on us until after the meal was finished. Food took SO long to come out the GM comp'ed us 10% off the bill (without us even asking). But we were so disappointed with the service that we didn't stay for dessert. Went for date night last night. It was packed by 6:30 so I'd get a reservation if you can. The best part hands down was the food. I had the fish and chips, it was light and delicious. Sadly, this restaurant has gone downhill. It used to be our favorite restaurant on the Square. There were three of us dining last night. We shared an appetizer, and each had 2 glasses of wine/beer, and an entree each. The total was over $180! They must have really increased the price of their drinks? I don't recall seeing prices on the bar menu. The dinner menu is very limited... not much to choose from anymore. Smaller portions (only one sad piece of crumbly fish was included with the Fish and Chips!) and reduced quality (the steak was tiny and overcooked). The entire restaurant smelled of fish. Service was really slow, only two people to serve and tend bar. Food and service used to be awesome. Really disappointed. I doubt we'll be going back. read more

But my recent dining experiences have been very disappointing, just like before. They're constantly running out of food, which I don't get because there's only a few items on their menu to begin with, and I usually eat between 5 and 6 PM. How can you run out of food so quickly?! Went back tonight to the Grumpy George to see what changes chef Gordon Ramsey had made last week ... The changes in ambience were great. I liked it before but now even better. Warm lighting with moody dark paint and now comfy seating made for a very pleasant evening . The menu is basically the same but now pared down a bit which meant that the food arrived promptly and was well cooked. Service was attentive. Terrible. They went back to the old recipe before Gordon Ramsey. I had to send my fish & chips back last night. Absolutely tasteless and the quality of fish was very bad. Mushy peas inedible. Tartar sauce was just mayo and some dill. Scotch egg has no taste. First visit was this past friday evening. First the good: -- outstanding service. -- Outstanding food tastes. Scotch Egg, Curry chips, Fish and Chips, Salad, Brussel Sprouts, Polenta and shrimp. All of it very well done, very well presented and VERY tasty. -- the selection of English beers was good. Now the not so good: -- Prices are out of line with what one would think of as "pub food". One could likely overlook the prices *IF* the atmosphere was more of a fine dining experience, but it is not. It is loud, echoing and the evening guitarist adds to the "This is a pub, not fine dining". $12 for a single scotch egg is crazy and $22 for what is arguably a small portion of fish, a small cup of chips, a REALLY small cup of baked beans (like, 2 tablespoons) is out of line. There are other pubs close by that charge the same but deliver larger servings. -- As mentioned, the place is loud in that the way it is built out it promotes echoing. Echo reducing material would help tremendously, along the lines of what Tony and Luigi's did when they remodeled. This is not fine dining -- adjust your prices to reflect the environment. Until then .... I'll be there for the beer and that is it. read more

A completely unbiased opinion from a Brit! My husband and I had a fantastic dinner at the new British pub/restaurant The Grumpy George on the square. Husband said it was the best fish and chips he's ever had! High praise from someone who's sampled them many times in England. I had the Cumberland Sausage with mashed potatoes, onion gravy and glazed carrots. Absolutely delicious! For dessert we shared a Sticky Toffee Pudding with honey whiskey ice cream to die for! They have British beer on tap and specialty cocktails. It's a unique addition to the Downtown area. Authentic too! The owner is British. Go check them out! read more

They've stepped up their game! They have some new items and the service is still great. We went on Friday night. We were seated quickly, our drink order was handled within three minutes, and appetizer order placed within another three more minutes. The Rueben eggrolls are my new favorite. I had the fish cakes which were seasoned perfectly. They still have beer from Barking Armadillo on tap. The place was packed, but the manager on duty ran a well-oiled machine. She came by to check on us at least twice. This was in addition to our server normally doing his job. So glad to see this place knocking it out of the park. We will be back. read more

Went to dinner with friends recently, I ordered fish and chips and the fish had a weird smell and tasted very bad, I sent it back and ordered bangers and mash. That meal came out cold but I ate it anyway. The manager Carol then came out and told me the cook checked the fish and I was wrong the fish was fine!!! Ummm no Carol it wasn't! I have never been talked down to in a restaurant by a manager non the less! Our other friend had crispy mashed potatoes on her Shepards pie! We visited for the first time yesterday. I had read several of the reviews (positive and negative) and we decided to give the place a try. We arrived on Saturday (one day before St. Patrick's Day) at 4 pm. We were seated promptly. Looked like a fun atmosphere, especially a table of about 10 or 12 near us. They were actually the loudest table we have ever experienced, and the acoustics made it even louder, but they seemed to be having fun. The table next to us were two couples who apparently frequent the place often. They gave us some tips. I had the Guinness & Steak Pie with sides of roasted potatoes and Brussel Sprouts. The Guinness & Steak pie was delicious. Meat was tender, the sauce/gravy was super delicious. Every bite was yummy. Recommended, although it looks like this is the Saturday special. The roasted potatoes were super delicious, and the Brussel Sprouts were big and tasty, but a bit tough. My wife wanted to try the Bangers & Mash, but it was not available, so she had the Reuben Eggrolls as Ashley said they were very popular. These were very tasty and we will likely have them again. (I saw a picture of a Reuben sandwich on Yelp that looks fantastic, but we did not see that selection on the menu). She also ordered the house salad which was "salty" and the croutons were hard and chewy. Too chewy and too hard. We ate one each, and left the rest on the plate. We also shared the Sticky Toffee Pudding (recommended by both tables next to us) and it was very good. The owner paid close attention to the two couples next to us, visiting their table 3 times, but never once acknowledged our presence. Nice beer selection. I initially ordered a Guinness, served in a Guinness glass (just like I have at home!). Then, one of the guys next to use had a Black & Tan (which was not on the menu), and it looked well made. I think they mixed Guinness & Harp. So good. All in all, a mixture of good and not-so-good. But, we will return. Mostly, good beer and super tasty food. Continued: Went back a 2nd time.
