Here are the cliff notes in case you don't want to read through the wall of text: Looking for used bikes, go to another dealer and just flat out avoid their service department. I frequented last year looking for a used bike and while on a stop there heard of a trade in for a 21 svartpilen which i had my eye on for a while. This is more of a shame on me moment, as if i had checked online prices maybe i wouldn't have picked up a 2k mile used bike at grand over the new msrp. They got me and I suppose I deserve it, lesson learned. Shortly after picking up the bike i noticed some gremlins popping up. Error codes, stalling, the whole shebang. When i first took the bike back they couldn't figure it out. After some research I narrowed it down to a faulty clutch sensor and replaced the part: no more problems and running great. Just wish the team there took the time to check the bike either before they took the trade or made the sale. As for the bike: love it. Probably wouldn't have written this review if it wasn't for a friend who said they were looking to go here for a used bike. (also cause the whole situation is a little embarrassing for me) But, if I could do it all over again, I wouldn't give them the business and urge those looking for a bike to do the same. read more

I posted a review last month, shortly after purchasing a new Wolf V-150 scooter. I've had so much fun with this thing, I recently purchased another V-150 as my airport vehicle. I rode it Wednesday evening into dark, had an issue with an intermittent headlight, called Tony the owner and explained the problem, he told me to drop it off when convenient. If you want to get gouged for labor costs on a simple job, go to Top Gear Powersports. They act all friendly with their dog there to soften the blows when the bill comes. I found this place since it was one of the only places open on a Sunday! Even though I was 20 miles out, it was a great ride out there. I needed a jacket, and Mike was extremely helpful in pointing out some of the benefits of the jackets and was very knowledgeful about the different brands. Once I settled on the one I liked, as I was getting on my bike with the new jacket and noticed that one of the air vent zippers was either misaligned or damaged in some way that it wouldn't zip. Mike didn't have another of that size, so he had me wear it home and return it the next weekend after getting his dealer to send a replacement. Its great to know that there are good businesses out there who take care of their customers, I'll go back anytime for more apparel or accessories. read more

Bought a older bike from these guys 2021. Anthony the manage assured me that nothing was wrong with the bike and that he inspected it himself. Bike stopped working 150 miles later, completely no power. Had things going on so I didn't reach out to get bike serviced for about 6 months. Once I did, Anthony arranged for the bike to be picked up from house to get fix at there shop. After a week or so, Anthony let me know what was wrong with the bike and that they can fix it. I told him ok, but I wasn't to happy because the bike only worked for 150 miles if that, and I still had to pay to get it fixed. I paid roughly 3400 for the bike and once I got it fixed, I paid an addition 600. I wrote a review on google expressing what happened and Anthony texted my phone himself asking me why would I write a bad review on his company. I went into the shop to talk about it face to face where we had a little argument, but they still had my bike being that I hadn't paid for repairs yet. I picked bike up the next day and rode it home, which I live 0.7 miles away from the shop. Couple weeks after, the bike was completely dead again. I called, they told me to get a new battery. I put a new battery in the bike, and it's still dead. No power at all. I called today to let the shop know that they got over on me for about 4100 altogether. Anthony got on the phone and said "Sorry you feel this way, but IT IS WHAT IT IS! Horrible service! I Would NEVER recommend this place! Maybe if I wasn't black, the treatment may have been completely different ! BEWARE they will steal your money!!!!! RUN! read more

I was looking for a smaller bike to re-learn how to ride and Anthony could not have been nicer and more knowledgeable about the bike that I would ultimately purchase. He was friendly and explained in detail about the Benelli TNT135. I had a bad experience with a much bigger bike and did not have the confidence that you really need to ride a motorcycle and actually have fun. I just got back from riding my bike and I had a HUGE smile on my face!!! I felt very comfortable on it and had a lot more confidence than my first experience. When I went to pick the bike up, Anthony's co-worker, (who I believe is also named Anthony : ) went over and explained about the bike, servicing and maintenance. Tony, the owner of the shop also mentioned the recommended service to keep the bike running well. I can honestly say that this business, owner and employees are fantastic!!! This is my new favorite motorcycle gear shop. First off, there is actually women's gear here so I can try before I buy. Besides jackets/pants/gloves, there is also a good selection of helmets (and different brands), luggage, and accessories too. Second, the service here is amazing. I came in for a helmet lock (which was not in stock but was ordered and in the store ready for pickup within 2 days) and the salesperson, Tony, was really nice and asked about my bike and talked with me for awhile. When I went to pick up my lock, Mike (the salesperson there that day) had notes about exhaust systems that Tony and I had briefly talked about and even had a catalog earmarked for me to check out. If that's not amazing service, I don't know what is. When I am ready for new gear, or that new exhaust system, I will definitely be ordering from Top Gear. Definitely check it out. read more

Top Gear Powersports is the new kid on the block for us motorcycle riders in the area who are hungry for gear. They opened in Fall 2012, and it's nice that they're around. There aren't a lot of brick-and-mortar shops around here that offer gear, and it's really important to be able to try gear on for proper fitment. With the rise of online shopping, it's very easy to order stuff -- but brick-and-mortar shops have an advantage in that you can actually try things on in person before you buy them. Top Gear has a little bit of everything. Rather than just catering to sport or touring or cruiser or ATV or off-road enthusiasts, it has a little something for everyone. They also carry a lot of Spectro oils and various other fluids, including Engine Ice coolant and even mineral oil (if you have a KTM, for example). Prices are consistent with other shops' pricing for those fluids. Top Gear also has several different colors of bungee nets to strap stuff to your pillion seat, as well as various bike and gear locks. Now here's where they can improve: offering more niche items to differentiate themselves from the few other shops there are in this market. Shops like MCC and the D-Store will succeed, because they're offering this area something that no one else in the area is. Top Gear isn't -- so far. It's a young shop, so my hope is that they'll become something great. As I said, there aren't many shops around that offer motorcycle gear in the first place (and there are even fewer since Chicago Cycle closed up shop), but two others that do are DGY and the newly-opened Cycle Gear in Schaumburg. I mention these two particularly because their gear selection and Top Gear's overlap. All three shops carry lots of stuff in the Parts Unlimited catalog. Nothing wrong with that, but if three different stores in the area offer it, what's going to make you choose one over another? You'll probably choose based simply on geography, assuming pricing is similar across the board and all the shop employees are reasonably nice. I really want to see Top Gear succeed. To do that, I really hope they'll consider carrying boutique items that you can't find anywhere else around here. Stuff like Suomy helmets, for example. Until the D-Store arrived, where could you find AGV lids to try on? Nowhere. You had to order that stuff online. Vemar (especially the Powerpuff Girls lids) would appeal to female riders. Held gear is wonderful, but you can't find that in stores around here, either. RS Taichi is another high-end brand that you can't find in stores. Dainese gear is now pretty well covered by both the D-Store and MCC -- which both saw a niche and sought to fill it. Even stuff like the DOT-approved Atelier Ruby helmets from Paris. (OK, maybe that would be a tougher sell given their price -- but maybe not. If they're the only game in town for this stuff, customers who are interested will have no choice but to go to Top Gear to try it and buy it.) So that's one step. Another step will of course be getting the word out that this shop exists, and that it carries all this wonderful specialty stuff. Top Gear already has a web presence, and offers its wares for sale online. That's a good and important step. They also have a Facebook presence that one of the employees tells me is something they're trying to expand. When I asked if they were on Yelp, he said he didn't know, and that someone else (who I later realized was a friend of mine) had asked the same thing. Try as I might, I couldn't find it -- so I listed it. As I said, I really want to see these guys succeed (after all, they're right by my house). Their shop is tiny, and their sign is easy to miss from the road as you go by if you're not looking for it. I live in the area, and I'm interested in and frequently riding my motorcycle, and I still wouldn't have known about it if a fellow rider friend hadn't told me about it. Even then, we drove and rode past it several times before realizing exactly where it was. So more people need to know about this place, and this Yelp listing and review will hopefully help. I've found out about a bunch of stuff I never would have known about because of Yelp. Establishing themselves in the local motorcycling community would also help. Maybe they could host bike nights or encourage local riders' groups to begin group rides there. I know right now is the off-season, but that's exactly the right time to start this stuff. Motorcyclists get frustrated when they can't ride for long periods of time. Maybe arranging a showing of motorcycle races at the shop and advertising it would help build their community presence. (Hint: the WSBK season starts at the end of February. Unfortunately, it looks like Speed will no longer be carrying it in 2013...grrr. But if Speed will still be showing AMA races, that's something they could show, and that people would come watch!) C'mon, Top Gear. I'm cheering for you. This place really deserves the high ratings that we are all giving it. I am just starting out in the world of motorcycles and stopped by last night to get myself a helmet (and ended up getting some additional starting gear as well). Tony was super helpful in helping me select the right helmet for my head and answered all of my questions. I felt the prices were more than fair (actually the helmet and jacket were less than I was expecting them to be). In the world of internet shopping it might be possible to find the same gear for cheaper than I paid for it (again, the prices were fair and I paid less than I was expecting to) but there is nothing like the ability to really feel things out, try things on, and have a face to face person to answer your questions and guide you to the right gear. That goes double for the thing protecting my brain. If there is one thing I am willing to pay extra for, it would be outstanding customer service and Top Gear certainly provided that. They will be my first stop whenever I need more gear. read more

My spouse and I were out shopping for our first full set of motorcycle gear. After trying one or the other shop in the Chicagoland area and not making any headway online, we headed over to Top Gear Powersports. Apart from being greeted by their great dog Tucker, Anthony, the owners son took amazing care of us. He explained in detail and with patience the differences with the helmets and had us try on different helmets from different manufacturers. He consulted very well regarding fit, safety aspects and always gave us the additional information we needed to be able to make a valid decision. He did the same for our jackets and gloves we bought! We were taking quite a bit of time, but he did not mind and stuck with us and handled other customers coming in either when we were debating which jacket to buy or was able to pass them on to his father who was also there. We were never rushed, felt really relaxed and confident about it and he also gave some good advice regarding the purchase of our first bikes. We really enjoyed the buying experience and would definitely come here again and recommend it to any friends!
