Solid 4 stars. Totally hit the spot for the gyro I've been craving! Thursday night headed over around 7pm, got there at a great time because the line definitely started after I got there. Service was quick, but you can tell they're still working out the kinks. We ordered the beef gyro sandwich with white sauce and hummus with a combo (beef and chicken) platter. Also ordered a side of falafel. There was a lot of food. Came out to $28 for the combo platter with hummus, gyro sandwich with hummus, side of falafel, piece of baklava and one soft drink. First time trying the Halal guys and it was beyond good! The chicken was fresh and people working were nice. They helped me with ordering and gave great suggestions. I'm going to keep this short and sweet. This place is better than the one in the city right outside the Hilton on 53rd. Meat is juicier, more to choose from, add-ons are simple yet impactful and the pita bread is way more spot on. I only gave it one star less because it's unfair that I have to compare this to the outdoor one in the city. It should be 4.5 stars. Also this place is fucking clean. Like seriously. From OC California flew in for a work trip. Randomly drove by this place on the way to a job and decided to stop in. My husband and I both had chicken and lamb gyro sandwiches. They were delicious! Great and healthy food at a very reasonable price. I have been there 3 or 4 times during the lockdown and they are fast whether you order online or at the restaurant. I generally order the Combo Platter which is sautéed shredded chicken and beef with yellow rice and salad. I generally get some taboulleh and everything is smothered with a white Middle Eastern sauce and can come with a hot sauce (that is indeed hot and I'm a hot sauce lover). I'm usually not giving 5 stars during the pandemic cause I want to feel their sit down experience. But they are structured like a food truck so the cheap, good and fast won't change. Bottom line is that this is a much better alternative to the Golden Arches right across the street. read more

I've heard good things about this place so finally decided to try it out. Ordered combo platter and a combo gyro. Platter was good, but way too much food. I am told the small platter is way too small but it isn't cost effective as its only $1 less than the regular. Lettuce and tomatoes were fresh and rice was fluffy. I thought the meat lacked flavor. The gyro was ok, but it didn't wow me. They were very generous with sauces, thank you for that by the way because its off putting to costumers to pay for. Two ounce container of sauce. Overall it's a good place for middle eastern "fast food" but there are way too many food options in the area. Maybe I came on an off day, I will give The Halal Guys another shot. read more

Let's paint a picture. It's 4am in NYC and you are STARVING and you get to Hahal guys in 53rd and knock down the most delicious thing on this planet. There's nothing more satisfying than fulfilling the ultimate craving of Halal Guys. At Union you get the same great taste and nostalgia but at 6pm on a Thursday. The platter is loaded up with meat and rice, the hot sauce gets you hiccuping if you add too much, the white sauce can make you tear it's so good. Great to have in the area. read more

Notice how the franchise stores usually have around 3 stars and the original on 53rd and 6th has 4 1/2? THERE ARE MANY REASONS WHY. I came here for the first (and last) time yesterday. First of all, they filled HALF the platter with lettuce. Then the employee filled the other half with small amounts of rice and chicken. In NYC, the halal guys give you a tiny portion of lettuce, but so much chicken and rice that they can barely close the lid. It's enough for two people! Also, the franchise is super cheap with white sauce. They charge you 50 cents per packet if you dine in, while in NYC you can put as much as you'd like because it's self-serve. I mean if you're going to make the Halal Guys a franchise, do it right! Overall, the franchise is a disappointment so far. It doesn't taste as good, you get less for your money, and you get limited portions of the best part, white sauce. I guess it'll continue to be a "once in a while" kind of treat when I'm on my way home from NYC. Sigh. read more

To top it off there was a miscommunication between him and the cashier, so I got charged extra and didn't get what I paid for. Halal Guys is absolutely delicious. I always like to get the bowl with chicken and rice. Warning: their hot sauce is very hot!!!! Their food is delicious and you don't have to wait long. It's very quick and the staff is very efficient. There are many tables inside so, you can definitely sit there and eat. I was so exited to see that this place was open in Union. It's soo surreal to me because I remember all the drunken nights(OK really mornings) in my early 20's that led to the Carts in the City, the long line was always a challenge we didn't mind . There were times after a late night studio session me and my friend Sosh Bacardi would look at each other and say in a VERY obnoxious voice "CHICKEN and RICE" and drive all the way from South Plainfield to NYC randomly. Sooooo with that kinda history with Halal Guys of course I was Super Pumped to see that Yellow Sign in Union NJ !!! Though I no longer eat Chicken I still have been twice since opening to Buy a Veggie plate. Rice/Salad and I buy extra pita (I add my own fish at home ). The place may have a LONG line but it will move fast ! They pride themselves on good vibes and so far so good. Very Clean and Smells delish inside. You can also buy extra "White Sauce" and Hot sauce to keep in your fridge when you want to wake up a meal you have cooked. If I could give no stars I would. So not worth the hype. I would rather go in the city , at least they have manners there. I just want people to stop lying and following the trends, or maybe you guys just really don't know good food. It's so annoying trust me you're wasting your money. The rice was so HARD the falafel was so freaking dry and hard I could have hit someone over the head with it. It seems like they hired people right off the street to come work here. The owners aren't any better. One was outside smoking and came right back inside and went to work by the food didn't wash his hands FREAKING GROSS. The amount of salad and rice you get compared to meat is pure COMEDY. The portions are way smaller here compared to the city. I give a solid 2 years before they're gone. In conclusion .. I got a falafel platter today for lunch. Although it tasted good, there was chicken between the pita wedges that I had to scrape off. I discovered that they actually store their pita on top of a pile of chicken. So all the pita has bits of chicken stuck to the bottom. If you're vegetarian or otherwise non-meat inclined, be ware of meat cross contamination in your dish. read more
