I love The Halal Guys and always made sure to stop by their cart at LEAST once a day whenever I was in NYC. The chicken and rice looks plain and it looks like nothing special--but as soon as it hits your tongue, you realize what a fool you are for judging a book by its cover. However, this particular halal guys really disappoints. The chicken is almost never fully cooked, and it's always in big chunks that I always end up having to shred with two forks myself. They also lack the vegetables available at most other stores; they only have lettuce and tomato. In terms of service, everyone here still provides very prompt and friendly service. The cashiers and the managers have been pretty nice. That doesn't make up for the fact that the dining space is small (although most people take it to go anyway), AND they don't participate in the rewards program anymore! read more

Delicious fast gyro wraps and platters. They only offer beef gyro meat, chicken, combination or falafel as protein. Only lettuce and tomatoes are offered as vegetables. They have 3 sauces: white, spicy, and barbeque. I like how they keep it simple... And sometimes simplicity is best! If you prefer more complex flavors in your Mediterranean/ middle eastern then Cava, Roti, pita pouch would suit you. I wish this chain would establish itself in Maryland. read more

I can't compare to the original New York location but I am going to compare to the Baltimore halal cart down the street from my place. After missing the chance to experience the one and only halal guys in New York, I was excited they were opening locations right near the D.C. area. I ordered the regular chicken and gyro combo platter which cost me around $9 bucks. I didn't know that the spicy sauce was gonna burn so I asked for more when they only put a small amount. I should have referred to Yelp! The chicken was dry and couldn't hold up on its own. It needed to be slathered in the white sauce that came on top of the platter. The gyro was bearable and the rice sufficient. Where's the flavor? I was expecting a party in my mouth. Do I wanna come back for this praised chain? I don't think so. Now the cart down the street, I definitely will continue to go to that. For only $7, you have a platter full of meat plus a drink included and it packs a punch full of flavor. Awesome comfort food that closely follows the NYC formula. Interestingly, it is more expensive and the portion is smaller in nova than from the cart in NY. I'm willing to accept it as the price of convenience. Overall, the food is very good and it really hits the spot for comfort food. It's definitely not fancy as the business originated from a food cart, so I think we need to readjust our expectations. Overall though, I'm a big fan and will continue to frequent this location. Ohhh Halal Guys. You made me stop dead in my tracks and scream when I finally found your food truck in NYC. And when I found out you were coming to VA of all places, i almost shed a tear and of course told every person I knew. I stood in line for an hour and a half on opening day at the Springfield location, and for about 40 minutes the next day at this Merrifield one. This girl was excited. While I will agree that there is a tiny little something missing in the chain/VA Halal guys food, it still completely satisfies my Halal Guys craving. The food comes out FAST, and they don't skimp on the meat or sauces. This was really what worried me the most about the stores opening. And if you've never been, load up on the white sauce. This is what makes the meal. This location is the closest to me, so I will definitely be back. And the store owner is always so friendly - this is a definite plus. read more

I don't normally give bad reviews and I try to take a lot of things into consideration, but my experience today was just too horrible and unacceptable. I went in to get 2 combos for takeout, and all the food ordering went fine. When I got to pay, I wanted to charge a portion on my corporate card, since we had an event and the company gave us an allowance. So I asked the cashier (pretty sure this guy was the owner/manager) to put a certain amount on the corporate card and I would pay the balance with my own credit card. He didn't understand at first but after I explained a little more, he said fine. However, after the payment went through, I realized he charged me the full amount regardless. I thought he just made a mistake but then he started to mansplain to me how credit cards work and that I had enough money on the card to cover the full amount and didn't need to split it, which was not the case at all. It was a corporate credit card, so any transaction amount would have gone through, it's just that I had a limit for today. His attitude was terrible, didn't take me seriously, and refused to reverse the charge. I've been to this location plenty of times before and whenever this guy is not there, my experience is pretty great. I think I'll start avoiding this place or even just go to the one in tysons from here on out. read more

My husband is obsessed with Halal Guys and we always go out of our way to make a stop to the cart on 53rd and 6th whenever we're in NYC. We've been eagerly waiting for the opening of the brick and motor store down the street from our place and have stopped by several times since their opening. We've never dined in but there's limited seating (a few tables and seats along the window). Their menu is consists of bowls and gyro sandwiches (chicken, gyro, falafel, or a combo of chicken and gyro), as well as fries, hummus, and baklava. While going down the line to order, be sure to let them know at the time of your order for any modifications you'd want to make (i.e., spicy sauce on the side, no tomatoes, etc.). I feel like this location tastes a lot cleaner and blander than the cart. I'll probably need a few months so until I get that "dirty cart taste". read more

I really liked this place! I think the service is what made me give them a 5/5. Everyone on the food line was so nice and helpful! I believe the owner was the cashier and he was so nice when it took me so long to get my change in order to pay! :) We came in around 7:30 and it was not too busy. We were able to order quickly. The interior is nice and clean. Granted they just opened, but still, I'm glad they keep it in good shape! I got the combo platter with chicken and beef gyro. I preferred the chicken. The seasoning was better I think and less greasy. I ended up getting only lettuce and no rice. I'm glad I did that because it was a lot of food! I got the special white sauce and red sauce. The white sauce was soooo yummy!!! When I come back, I'm going to get a bunch of that, it was just heaven! I also LOVED LOVED LOVED the red sauce. It's the first 'spicy' sauce that I actually thought was spicy. I could have even gotten more. I was so pleased! But I will warn you, if you have any weaknesses towards spice, DON'T GET IT! or get it on the side. One thing I really liked was the fact that the meat tasted really good even without the sauce. After much huzzah, the world famous NYC-based Halal Guys are here! And even better, there are not one but TWO locations already opened in the metropolitan D.C. area. Every time I go to NYC, I usually get Halal Guys' renowned chicken and rice platter. It's so incredible that this business was once just a food cart and has now expanded to restaurant chains around the country and internationally. Thank goodness they decided to open up multiple restaurants in this area! Like I mentioned, I usually order the chicken and yellow rice platter and so that's what I got during the VIP opening period. A platter of chicken and rice with the simple and ubiquitous salad of lettuce and tomatoes, topped with pita bread. Of course, I had to have their famous white sauce and (some) hot sauce ladled over the entire dish to get that signature Halal Guys taste. Though I feared the move to D.C. might have messed up the overall taste profile, I'm happy to report that while eating my platter I felt like I was transported to the Big Apple. Everything tasted great and it's a huge portion of chicken, rice, lettuce and tomatoes, and pita. I was stuffed after eating my platter. You can bet I'll be back in line for more chicken and rice. In a much anticipated wait, Halal Guys has finally opened its doors to hungry foodies in the DMV. Famous for their humble cart on West 53rd and 6th Ave in NYC, Halal Guys has been racking up lines since the early 90's, and now, will continue racking up the lines right here in my neighborhood. Before I dive into my foodie experience, let's give a shoutout to the amazing social media marketing team who's been promoting the soft opening, VIP week, and upcoming grand opening like no other marketing team before. The hype is real, guys. We came a little early during VIP week (passes given out via e-mail after signing up on their website). Beating the dinner rush, there was barely any line, and we were on our way to our food in minutes. It was as if I was right there, in the corner of West 53rd and 6th Ave again, nostalgia of weekend NYC trips, all rushing back. The piles of meat cooking in the background, the yellow shirts shuffling around the line, and the quick pouring of food into the famous aluminum container wrapped in the yellow plastic bag. This is the EXACT experience that you would get from the cart, and they were able to deliver the same exact experience here at a brick-and-mortar location. The food was just as phenomenal as always. It's simple, good food. Beef that's been marinated in whatever secret spice and recipe they have in store, and the delicious yellow rice to go with it. Of course, don't forget the white and red sauce. Pop the white sauce for a ranchy and yoghurty flavor to accompany the fire burning red sauce. Oh yes, it's THAT spicy (so be careful!) You can also request to get the sauces in the side. To top it all off, the friendliest staff working both outside and inside the shop. We were greeted with so much hype that I got pretty giddy when stepping in. Everyone behind the cooking line was so friendly and helpful while working with cart-speed! IT'S FINALLY HERE! The world famous chicken and rice! As a huge fan of the original Halal Guys in NYC, I was beyond ecstatic to hear that they were opening in DC! I attended their first day of pre-opening in Vienna and was pleasantly surprised - there was no wait! The employees worked in an assembly line format and were very fast and efficient. The restaurant is small and clean with a few tables and chairs for seating. The managers were all very friendly and welcoming. Chicken and Rice Platter - Delicious! While the portions do not match up to the carts in NYC, the overall taste and flavors are there. The chicken is well-seasoned and pairs nicely with the rice, tomatoes, chopped salad, and pita bread. The game changers in this dish, however, are their SAUCES. Add heaps of white sauce with a hint of red (caution: VERY SPICY) and this platter will change you for the rest of your life. It's been awhile since I had Halal Guys from the original NYC street cart, but this tastes just as good. An added bonus is not having to venture far out to get the glorious chicken and rice! You can choose between a small platter or a large platter. It comes with veggies (lettuce and tomato), rice, and your choice of protein (beef, chicken or both). You pay extra for more protein, sauce, and falafel. The combination of all the flavors are delicious when marinated with their signature sauce. It looks like the same consistency as tzatziki sauce, but I am unsure what its ingredients are. You can also get some their hot sauce, but take caution that a little goes a long way. The service is always on point; we ordered and were out the door in less than 5 minutes. The staff are friendly and super efficient. No long waits here. Huge money saver if you don't want to make your own lunch. (Combo platter $8) -This location is much more brighter and livelier than the Springfield location. NEGATIVES -The Merrifield location is very stingy compared to the NYC version. Even the Springfield location gives you more for your money. -NYC food cart is a dollar cheaper. -The iceberg lettuce and tomatoes suck. I know it's original, but I rather pass on the McChicken lettuce and the Taco Bell tomatoes. -They charge extra for white sauce, but it's free to put on more while you are there. Why would anyone buy the sauce if we could ask for more there? It seems there are a bit more negatives than positives, but what ultimately swayed my decision from 3 star to 4 star is whether I'd come back. Oh how halal guys takes anyone back to Nyc nightlife. I'm super surprised that they franchised Down in the nova area ~ plus I love two blocks away from this location! I learned from Yelp that they were having their soft opening this weekend so I decided to go over and take a gander at the new place. I had registered for vip online but my ticket wasn't till sept 2.... So gotta at least try !! And it worked !! Staff was all super friendly and they don't even have a menu up yet so you gotta just know what they have and what you want. Per my usual I got the gyro on rice platter , occasionally I'll get the combo but being the red meat eater that I am I prefer the gyro. Meat is seasoned well and patter size is the same as I remember. They were super generous with the lettuce and tomato even though I said I didn't want tomato... But whatever! I must say there has been ALOT of hype around this establishment since it has finally opened in the DMV area. The restaurant is located in the same shopping center connected to the Dun Loring Metro Station. As of now (9/11) there is still a line to get your food. It was at like 2 hours I heard before, but as of now its no more than a 10 minute wait. As far as the food goes, I would say it is worth the hype!! Maybe not worth a 2 hour wait, but it is definitely all that and a bag of chips. It's a very simple combination for the platters as I ordered the Combination Platter that comes with Gyro (beef and chicken). The basmati rice is absolutely delicious, and then you add the soft, juicy, succulent meat, and mix in the amazing white sauce on top and we have ourselves a roller coaster ride for your taste buds. Maybe the metro driver should have a tip jar or my doctor as well... Owner, please pay your staff a decent wage so they are not demanding a tip from me to stand in line and get my own food. My food was not free - I paid the price on the sign, I was not being "served", I stood in line and you handed it to me. If you need to change your menu prices to reflect labor costs, have the courage to do that, but don't have your employees give me the stink eye for not tipping you at a counter fast food restaurant. The meat was dry and I could tell that it had been sitting out for awhile because it had that dried look on the top of the meat but the regular look on the bottom. The Halal Guys is amazing. Even if you don't know what Halal food is, you will definitely like their food. The menu is small but you can't go wrong with anything on there. I have passed by tons of established restaurants in Midtown just to get a $7 plate from their truck. Speaking of their original location on 53rd & 6th, this location does not compare at all to their Midtown food truck or even to their carry out on 14th & 2nd. I usually get chicken because the gyro tends to be greasier and this location gave me way less protein than the NY locations. If your entire menu only has 2 kinds of proteins, why would you skim on the either of those main entrees? The service side was just as poor. There were 4 people on the line and they kept on getting confused. I waited 45 min outside only to see that there was one cashier working on one out of two registers. Then I had to ask her for a receipt only to hear that the printer is broken. (The other register is still inactive.) She tells me to write my email on a paper plate and that she'd email it to me. That was 3 days ago and I still haven't received a receipt in my mailbox. This is illegal and frowned upon by the BBB. If you are looking for the true Halal Guys experience do not come here. I might visit again in 2017 but these guys clearly need the rest of this year to get it together. read more

Here are some pro tips for enjoying your Halal Guys experience here at Dunn Loring: -Get the extra protein option or else you will seriously contemplate getting in line again for another platter because portion size isn't as large as in NY. Better yet, just order 2 platters the first time around. -Plan ahead on where you will be eating your platter because there's no chance in hell you will find seating inside; I suggest the benches near the metro station entrance or bring your own folding chair to dine outside -As you go through the assembly line, opt for the sauce packets instead of having the worker drizzle the red/white sauce for you - you can always add sauce yourself from their squeeze bottles lying around the tables and counter near the soda fountain. I got lucky in getting a VIP ticket for early for their soft opening. It also happened to be a rainy day so the line wasn't too long. The location is a bit weird in that it's across from the metro kiss and ride but depending on which way you walk it's hard to get to. I think the line movement was actually pretty efficient it was organized and they got people in and out without fuss even though the line was still long. The staff was still learning so they would get confused with orders but they we're still efficient enough that things were prepped in a timely manner and you didn't feel rushed. The BF and I both got combo platters although he wanted a sandwich and ended up with platter because they couldn't understand his order. We decided to just park ourselves there to eat and the place isn't really meant for sit down its more to go but we found a seat at a hightop table. Taste wise for my first halal guys experience not bad. I mean the basic breakdown is Meat,Rice,Lettuce and Tomato, and a pita topped with white sauce and hot sauce. The BF noticed that the white said that is given to you is a bit more watered down then the sauce in the packet. We both agreed that the sauce in the packet is better flavor wise. The hot sauce 2 thin lines of that stuff is spicy but oh so good especially balanced out with the white sauce. The chicken was a bit dry but with the sauce it worked out okay but it was still dry. The beef gyro meat is nicely seasoned and really stuck out to me. The Infamous Halal Guys, making its way into DMV with much hype. Is it the same as the NYC Halal guys? I was in NYC just two weeks ago, so I can say that yes, yes it is just like the NYC Halal guys, the brick and mortar Halal guys that is. The cart still beats the brick and mortar, just for the overall experience and the ability to walk down and eat in Times Square itself. For the food itself though, it is definitely good and a good value. The hot sauce is legendary. The reason why I have not given it more stars is because I feel that there is better "chicken and rice" to be had now, there's much more competition. Tons of chicken schwarma places around here now where you can get it cut off a vertical spit. The beef gyro here is also good, but I like the whole meat variety more. The quality here is not as good as other places, but the taste is still really good. I will definitely come here again, but there recently has been a surge of chicken schawarma places and meat cooked on vertical spit which beats this place. I will say though, that the workers here are very friendly, and keeps with the friendly halal guy workers in NYC feel. read more

Chicken and rice in the DMV area! I've been hooked to chicken and rice ever since I tried it in NYC a long time ago. I used to go to school in NYC so during the holidays I would bring back like 7-10 trays each time. So happy to have Halal guys nearby and it means no more bringing back Halal guys whenever I'm in NYC. I got the combo of the chicken and gyro with no salad. Add in A LOT of the white sauce and a small line of red sauce. Beware of the hot sauce. It is super hot and will not be enjoyable to eat if you put too much. The chicken and gyro tasted the same as in NYC. The white sauce is creamy and mellows out the spiciness in the red sauce. The grand opening day is Sept. 3 and I think the hours are from 11am to 1am. I'll say it, it's good but NY is still better. Am I still going to come here because I can't get to the NY one whenever I want? Probably. 1. I always order the combo but why is it beef here? Where's the lamb?! Obviously it tastes completely different! Please bring in the lamb. 2. Since when are there tomatoes in my chicken and rice? Or at least there used to not be in the original. I chose to order without it. 3. Parking is crappy. enough said. 4. Limited white and red sauce so they charge if you want extra to go but not if eating there. Worth buying? probably. Annoying? yes. 5. Overall the food was still good but there were things that were just disappointing. The meat was different as I stated above, the bread wasn't as good (don't know why), the lettuce was just large chunks so I was sitting there cutting it up with a knife as I was eating. read more

Finally, a location that is not 4 hours away!!! It tastes exactly like the NYC location. Well, I feel like they give you a bit more at NYC, I don't feel as full, others agree. Orangey rice - colored that bright orangey hue just right! Beef - perfectly oily, perfectly crisp. It's o-so perfect! No idea how they can make it so nice and crispy - oh that's right - they must fry it in all the delicious oil! Yummmmmm The sauce is of course legit! Do not, I repeat, do NOT mess with that hot sauce! I had 2 passes, after eating a quarter of it, I added a few more sprinkles. NEVER AGAIN!!! I painfully finished it... Had this delivered and it didn't disappoint. We got the falafel platter and a side of hummus as well as additional pita. It was delivered within their window, and their delivery driver was very nice! Portions are on the bigger side, so some could definitely be kept for leftovers, or if you're ordering other items (appetizers, etc), you could probably share an entree if you've got other things you're eyeing. I'd recommend here! Lots of good options and I think most people can find something they'd like if you're looking for a quick grab. read more

I assume its not fair that I come into this place expecting the same experience as one I got from the food truck at New York. The chicken lacked the flavors in comparison to the food truck . The white and red sauce tasted similar to the food truck . Service Ok . Overall not bad for a quick bite if you are in the area. read more

3.5 stars The breakdown: FOOD: Being a fan of ny street food, I was extremely excited for halal guys to open in va. I've tried my fair share of chicken and rice and was interested to see how this popular NYC street would do here in Northern Virginia. Well, all I can say is that chicken and rice definitely tastes better in the big apple. While I did/do enjoy the chicken and gyro platter option (with extra yogurt sauce and a sliver of hot sauce), I do find the dish to be somewhat more bland than what I'm used to. Luckily, a little extra sauce really makes a difference for me. Not to mention, the platter is a great serving size...for two meals! SERVICE: So far, so good. Service has been quick and friendly. They don't pressure you into getting the member card like at other establishments. INTERIOR: It could be better. They lack indoor seating, so if you want to eat there, you have to be patient because customers seem to like to take their sweet time (not eating) holding up tables. OVERALL EXPERIENCE: I've been back a few times because sometimes that craving just hits ya. Are the New York establishments better? Probably. But I'm happy this one even exists. read more

Okay so I'm not sure why a few folks expect this storefront to taste 100% exactly like the cart in NY...I knew that wouldn't be the case even before it opened. No, it's not the same because it's clear that a food stand is much different from a full kitchen! And my guess is that the restaurant chains have more food regulations and rules in comparison to the stands. Anyway, with that being said the food is great! I've tried both a gyro and of course their famous bowls. If you love to get lost in the sauce like I do then you better have them sauce it up and ask for a sauce packet on the side. In a nutshell, it's second best to the NY stand. And to me that's more than excellent because I can now have them more than once or twice a year. If this will be your first time trying it, I'm confident that you'll like the food from the Vienna location. My suggestion is to eat there at the restaurant if possible because it's honestly tastier when it's hot off the stove (Same case with the NY spot). read more

You know what, the parking pissed me off once but I must have been hangry. Seriously, there is no $10 meal that satisfies me more. How the hell does this place only have 3.5 stars? Who the heck eats Halal Guys and thinks they aren't worth a perfect score? Like, it's $10, it takes amazing, it fills you up.....and I dare say....it is better than pizza. read more

I'm so glad to have this place in my backyard. I had the combo platter which included both chicken and steak and it was amazing. The chicken was more juicier than the steak. The white sauce was a great addition to the meats giving it that extra flavor. On top of that, the hot sauce gives the meats an extra kick. You get A LOT of food for a small price compared to other locations. The service could have been better. We did go 3 days after grand opening and there was an extremely long line going around the corner. The staff in the kitchen were very uncoordinated and a couple of them didn't know what was going on which kept the line from moving at times. When I asked for beef I was ignored just for the fact that they were out of beef. I didn't mind waiting a couple minutes for it. I think once all the crazy business calms down, the service would get better hopefully which is the only reason I give this review 4 stars. Overall if you are in this area definitely check it out cause the quality of the food will overcome the challenging service and you won't regret it! read more

I thought this place was okay. I don't understand what the hype is all about. I ordered the chicken and gyro. I gotta say the meat was nicely cooked. The food seemed fresh, except the lettuce. My boyfriend noticed the lettuce smelled different, maybe pesticides was sprayed? not sure what it was. I think they need to put more sauce on the dish, but you can always arrange that yourself. They provide sauce bottles beside the napkins/spoons/knives are. Uhm, I think thats all I gotta say. I wouldn't eat here all the time. Just once in a while. This place was aiigghhtt. read more

I love the NYC Halal Guys truck, and every time there would always eat there at least once. But, frankly the franchise opening at Merrifields was a bit let down. The line here was unnecessary, these were due to slow service of staff, the food was also cold ... The only thing that probably same as the original was the white and red sauce, but even that they were too stingy to put on the food ... !! A great let down ... read more
