It has been a LONG time since then and I saw the red and yellow sign and I knew I just had to try it again and see if it was as good as I remember and honestly it was even better! Now they treat it as an assembly line so it's a much quicker pace. You can choose a small or large platter with either chicken, gyro or falafel. You get your typical rice, lettuce, tomatoes and pita bread but can also add fix ins such as green peppers, onions, olives and jalapeños. They also have the white sauce pre packaged now!!!! It's been about 10 years since I stood on the famous line on 53rd and 6th for some chicken and rice, smothered in white sauce. Back in the day, I'd round up a group of friends and drive into the city (or hop on the subway) just to get dinner. I have such fond memories of never being able to finish a plate and feeling absolute bliss after eating. When I heard this place opened, of course, I had to pick up some food and put it to the test. I crossed my fingers that it was as good as I remembered. And it actually was. The meat and rice was exactly what I remembered. It was like I went back into time. The only thing that would have made this a 5 star review was that they neglected to give me my white sauce. This may seem small but it's really what ties it together. I didn't even think to check before I left because the two bags were tied up like a booby trap and I could barely open it up to make sure all the food was there. I have been eating Halal Guys for over a decade. It was a pilgrimage when I went into NYC, it was a rare treat after going out in college, and it was a decadent lunch out of my midtown office. Halal Guys at 53rd and 6th is longest-running and best-known halal food cart business in New York. It can't be stated enough how far the Halal Guys reach extends. It's rare that 1 singularly perfected dish can unite the Manhattan construction workers, the J.P. Morgan investment bankers, the out-of-town tourists, the Parsons fashion students, and all the city's Uber drivers - let alone from a near 24/7 food cart. It's a classic NYC stable and the line is reliably ever-replenishing. Halal Guys is in the process of leveraging their brand and extending their empire via a franchise platform. Their aspiration is to become the Chipotle of Middle Eastern food. Whether they can retain their original NYC food cart magic, still remains unproven. I attended the Halal Guys Yonkers grand opening and while it may not retain the same street food cart magic, I thought it was a fairly reliable homage to my old memory. Their operations were clean, service was fast, portions were plentiful, and the packaged prepared sauces were familiar. The proteins remain muted in flavor. The falafel remains tough and dry. But overall, I thought this was a fair representation of the franchise brand. Great place for takeout. The entrees are big enough for you to share with someone else. The white sauce makes the average quality falafel and beef taste much better. Poor management leads to worse service. I've been having issues picking up orders I placed in advance. Yesterday, I ordered on Grubhub in advance and an employee wouldn't release my $15 order, even after I told her my name/initial and showed my receipt, unless I showed her a "confirmation" page which does not exist on the Grubhub app. Poor training and a total waste of my time. Simple rice, lettuce, tomato and the meat. I'm big into ingredients so I don't use their white sauce anymore and have made my own along with hot sauce. Things like soybean oil steer me away although I used to down the platters in it when I was younger driving to the city to get 53rd! Their baklava was nice and tasty as well. I have ordered from here twice for takeout. I've had the chicken platter and also the spicy beef gyro platter. I'm not a fan of the chicken, no real flavor. The beef is better, but nothing spicy about it unless you add the hot sauce yourself. I like spicy, but the hot sauce is def. a lot and can overpower the dish so use it wisely. The portions are ok, but def way too much rice and lettuce for my liking. Forget about the pita bread, stiff and cold every time. The place is kept clean and the staff seems friendly. I say! I was initially unsure of what to expect from an establishment which grew from a humble Manhattan food cart. After experiencing their fare I must say, the hype is well-deserved! Their bread-and butter (or pita and hummus if you will) are their gyros or platters. They offer either chicken or beef and your choice of mix ins (toppings). I said to myself, "let me give them another chance" and boy, I was disappointed in the portion of food. I ordered the regular size with no lettuce or tomato & this is what I got. To be fair, my whole family has dined there and we all agree. We loved Halal guys. We went to them for many years the original location on sixth Avenue in Manhattan. When we heard they were opening up different locations all over the city. We were very excited when a location opened up near me. We went there, and it was not the same, it was actually terrible, the meat was under seasoned (someone needs to sample the food). The beef was very dry. The folks who work there are obnoxious and rude (they do not want to be there). It's very sad to say but we will not be going back there again. We thought they may have had one off day and we went a few more times , And it was all the same. Unfortunately the food is not as good as the one on sixth Avenue or the first day this location opened. maybe in a couple years we'll go back. We hope they take these reviews serious and have some kind of quality assurance in regards to their meals, and workers, but for now we will be staying away and giving another Halal restaurant my business($). "It does not feel good to go back "This is the third time I stopped by this new halal guys place. The only thing I don't like is the food was not enough.especially I ordered a large size . If u think u paid for more and u get more food. This was not the case. And I knew I am not the only problem. There was 2 other customer behind me was buying food. But the kicker for me was when I was placing my order and asked for LESS rice and lovely server was abided by what ask and his superior said (right in front of my face), "we don't do what customers asks us to do.
