We finally checked out the new Half Shell location in Germantown, Tennessee and it's definitely a whole new vibe from the old Winchester location in Memphis! The atmosphere was nice, the service was great, and Tyler gave us some really good recommendations throughout the night. The Voodoo Salmon was the star for me -- the sauce was so good! I just wasn't a fan of the shrimp being placed underneath the salmon. My husband ordered the Catfish Pauline Blackened and it was good, but not something we'd rush back for. We skipped dessert this time , but we did try the Margarita and Mai Tai cocktails. Overall, the food was solid and we'd rate the restaurant a 7/10. I will never go back to Half Shell On Poplar. My husband and I walked in on 8/29/26 at 8:30pm sat at the bar and the bartender says we are closing at 9 tonight but they close at 10 according to the website. We walked passed the hostess and they did not say they were closing early. Many white people inside.Not welcoming all. read more

Service and food was very mediocre. Took a while for our server to come to the table. She was very pleasant and attentive after that. Food was average. Fish tacos lacked flavor and could have been a bit hotter. The baked potato was warm at best and could have been cooked longer. Their menu has changed a lot. Not as many choices as I remember. Plenty of seating. Dining area was clean and well lit. Waitress was prompt and got us drinks. Food was just okay. We have been to the one in east memphis and the one that used to be on Winchester. Food was better at both places. I had the blackened red snapper filet, tasted like a Sysco filet. Cajun chicken pasta was the better choice. Shrimp and grits had a small ice cream scoop worth of grits. Why? Were they almost out? Grits have to be the cheapest thing on the plate. Gumbo had a reddish gravy imo didn't taste like gumbo.. Waitress very nice and attentive. Food lacking. I ordered a salad and asked for only lettuce and tomatoes and they covered it in cheese and bacon bits. Over half of the lettuce was brown and wilted. I ordered Italian spinach. The waitress told me it was spicy so I was looking forward to that. Barely seasoned and it was the consistency of chopped spinach like you buy in the frozen food section. Most restaurants that I have ever eaten spinach use fresh whole. Taste was not good at hall. Salmon did have a good taste. read more

Look, I've been here a few times and I genuinely enjoyed the food. However, when I went this time around I had a roach crawl on my foot while in flip flops when using the bathroom. I was so mortified I couldn't even start to eat my food that had just arrived when I got back to the table. Roaches are nocturnal and for one to come out during the day means there are A LOT of them. It ran into the walls after shaking it off and the men's bathroom is directly next to the kitchen . When speaking to the manager I was not please with the answer "with the change in weather they come from the warehouse and we've sprayed for them." I get that spring brings bugs even in cleaner places, but the issue is known by staff and it seems like they've already "attempted" to resolve it. Well its not working. The crab cake portions were a lot smaller this time, the couple bites of my girlfriend's food she tried weren't as good as previous visits, and the food was cold. They took back our food and offered a desert to go as a compromise instead of comping our RIDICULOUS $30 bill that only included an appetizer, a mixed drink, and a soda. Safe to say I wont be going back and I will be telling everyone to avoid The Half Shell as well. read more

Senior management/ownership needs to really look at what they've created here. Starting with the name. I have been a patron of the Mendenhall Half Shell for over 20 years, where food and atmosphere excels. Went to try the G'town store and menu is lacking of go to dishes (i.e. Memphis style Fried Shrimp) and what we got off the lacking menu was poor flavor, service was horrendous and prices not worth the value. If you are going to keep this place open...which i doubt seriously you will make it. You should change the name to "The Quarter Shell" as it is no where close to the quality of "The Half Shell" on Mendenhall. I will not eat at G'town store again! read more

On Saturday August 16 a group of 16 ladies ate brunch/lunch at the new Half Shell Restaurant in Germantown. It was wonderful! We were in the big room away from couples and families and we had a ball. First of all we met Daisy, our waitress and she was smiling and doing for us the entire time. Took our orders. Brought the food out nice and hot exactly as ordered. Shrimp and grits were so good. My Monte Cristo was very tasty. Each one of our group enjoyed the food and the fun. No one was disappointed. If you have a group you'd like to entertain call Dorothy and she will set you up. It was just ok for me. The gumbo was not real New Orleans gumbo with a dark roux. This was orangey colored kind of like etoufee. It looks different in person than in the picture. It was salty too. They oysters were big. The Bienville was better than the Rockerfeller which was very bland. There was like no salt at all in the spinach filling. I don't know if I would come back. read more

Our party of 4 went to The Half Shell Germantown this previous Sunday afternoon for my wife's birthday. There was a large party in the back room but only 3 tables filled in the main area. It took 15 minutes to be waited on. It took another 10 minutes to get our drinks. We ordered our food with 2 of us getting house salads. It took 20 more minutes to get the salads. It took another 15-20 minutes to get our entrees with only 3 coming together. The 4th entree, being catfish, didn't come until the 3 of us with entrees were finished eating. I can understand this slow response if the place was crowded but with only 3 tables filled in the main area it is just poor service. The food was good but we will not be back to this location. The Mendenhall location will get our business from now on. read more

I have been going to Half Shell on Mendenhall for many years. I have always enjoyed the food and atmosphere. The Half Shell in Germantown has no atmosphere, the food was the worst I have ever eaten. I got a salad and crap bisque. The salad greens were warm and the crab bisque was awful. We ordered a dozen oysters Rockefeller. They brought them out 6 at a time? The oysters were tiny and the spinach topping was tasteless. On top of that they were market price which turned out to e $48 for 12 sad oysters. i will not be going to that location again. read more

They have made a massive mistake trying to reimagine a local staple like the Half Shell. I have been going to the original and former Winchester location for nearly 20 years and recently tried their new restaurant. The modern renovation is nice, but the concept is far too open and lacks any charm whatsoever. The food was fine, but nothing remotely close to what you expect at the Half Shell so be prepared to leave disappointed. The new menu lacks many long-time favorites and the pricing structure for grilled fish and other dishes is very misleading and difficult to decipher. It is quite expensive compared to how it's always been. While I appreciate the fact that they don't have freezers and everything is supposedly made fresh, keeping the name and totally upending the menu that one expects when dining at an established and well-liked restaurant was a terrible idea. Other patrons clearly feel the same based on other reviews and social media comments I've seen. My suggestion is to either change back to the original menu or switch the name and create a brand new concept unrelated to the Half Shell. Also, if you even so much as think about changing the original to this awful new style, then you may as well just shut it down because that will NEVER work. read more

This restaurant is so good! We tried it tonight to celebrate. The server was incredible. Haven't gotten service like that in awhile! The food was very fresh, and had good flavor. My crab cake flavor was a bit too flavorful, but that's such a silly complaint! Parking is easy!!! Immediately seated(which I love). The place is decorated wonderfully. I love the jellyfish lights. I ordered shrimp & grits - which I love. Shrimp was large & cooked perfectly. Delicious cream sauce over wonderful Gouda cheese grits. Very rich & I Couldn't eat it all so finished the rest for dinner! My friend had a shrimp po-boy with grilled shrimp. She said it was delicious & ate it all! I Ordered key lime pie, cause I love it also! Server was so accommodating- brought it in a "to go" container since I said I wasn't sure I could eat it all. It was very good & I finished the rest at home with rest of my shrimp & grits. My only concern was that it's rather pricey. Pie was $10 & total bill was $38; with tip ( well deserved), $47 for lunch!
