If you are at Kaiser waiting for someone you love, and you are scared, I recommend walking the block over to the happy heart. George and Irene took very good care of me during a time I felt the weight of the world on me. I was there for around 30 minutes. George listened to me, and gave me some very helpful strategies to manage my stress, I ended up with a beautiful bracelet, set of "worry stones" and a happier heart. It cost less than a therapy appointment and was better than fretting in a Kaiser waiting area. read more

They've got a good collection and it's fun to come in and look. But I'm not impressed by the random threatening signs about damaging merchandise. And I'm immediately turned off by the sign at the front door that says house rules, only one student at a time. Mixed in with some of the interesting geology are a few random toys being marketed as geology. For example the polished magnetite chunks that every kid loves, and I have a few on my refrigerator, are being sold for $5 each. You can buy a bag of them at fisherman's wharf for $7. While this is an interesting store it's a store that you don't feel especially comfortable walking around in. They're also a couple of ivory tusks that, frankly, our politically incorrect in the San Francisco Bay area. read more

This shop is just a very short walk from the Kaiser complex. I had an extra half hour and went for a stroll before my appointment. I had been by this establishment before and decided it would be FUN re-exploring this shop. If you are are rock hound, crystal lover, or want to see glimpse into the past--The Happy Heart is fun to check out. Besides rocks and crystals they have shells, and Tibetan singing bowls (in fact their is a huge a huge one there). There are small figures carved out of jade hiding in the store. And large statues that are waiting for appreciating eyes. There are fragrant surprises like White Sage and Palo Santo cones. They have several varieties of fossils, too. If you just want to take a break and feast your senses--you can do that in this store without any pressure to buy. And if you are looking to treat your self or someone you love--there are lots of options from very inexpensive to pricey. read more

This has been one of my favorite stores to get crystals/gems since moving to the Bay Area. I was waiting for my appointment at Kaiser and found this store across the street. Metered street parking can be found in front of their store. Pros: -friendly staff that helped answer my questions -descriptions of items and their benefits are clearly posted -I saw some customers get jewelry made right in front of them after picking out items they liked. How cool! -they also have jewelry, palo santo, sage and more!!! I love coming to this store as it....well...makes u happy! They used to have one in Oakland chinatown but has since closed and so I frequent the "mother store" on Piedmont Ave...(i believe the daughter runs a store on Lakeshore Ave) full of pretty crystals that have some healing or energy/feng shui properties which I find intriguing and want to know more. Today's visit is to find some crystals for a friend who has been going through some work stress. I thought why not stop at Happy Heart as they have beautiful stuff and the staff there is very helpful...so I got some citrine and smokey quartz that have properties of calmness and balance aside from it being pretty. The mother, Irene and younger gentleman are always helpful so I don't have to search for things and if u buy a pendant, they will put on a red or green string that adjusts with a bead added to it. Fun to peruse and find that unique gift! Located on the first block to the right heading up Piedmont Ave...And you'll know ur getting close by the smell of the incense coming from the store. read more

Not only is George kind, ethical but extremely knowledgeable and accurately recommends "tools" for your unique situation. I believe people have own magnetic field which can be impacted momentarily by energy in the environment, like redwood or old house. When you enter a gem shop like The Happy Heart, either you may feel an attraction or a repulsion. Some stones are said to absorb, then reflect, good or bad, energy of the environment or previous visitors. So, you see rave reviews or harsh criticism - v personal experience (probably a magnetic reaction) after a trip to a ROCK shop. Secondly, the layout of the shop and its zodiac or mythological objects are different for Tibetan Buddhism, European astrology or Hinduism practitioners. One may not find this place customary. I happen to be interested in Chinese feng shui and I'm able to treasure hunt in this shop with a happy heart and find the owner George genuine and knowledgeable. Great selection on stones and Buda statues. Just don't expect to use a credit card. Every time I have gone in it "sorry the credit card machine is not working today because no internet." This is one of the first boutiques we visited after we moved up from Orange County. I was born in Vietnam, but a war orphan, and adopted into the WASPiest suburban family that you can imagine in Southern California, and I speak Spanish, fluently. I guess that would make me, uh... "Chinkano". Whatever. The Asian esthetic appeals to me... and I have a bruise on my hip because my current furniture arrangement upstairs has too many sharp cornered pieces in a smallish intersection - so I bashed myself in the exact same spot - twice - yesterday. I don't like the kookiness of the Feng Shui philosophy, but I can't argue that there is an art to arranging furniture so as to avoid personal injury. But I digress. I wanted to kind of feng shui our new loft, and so we popped into this little shop before grabbing a bite to eat on Piedmont Ave. Blech! Not the food - the vibe of this store - it's utterly pretentious and I won't ever go back. Yes, you can buy some nice little trinkets, from individually strung amythest quartz crystal pendants to strands of beads... and I will confess: I did just that. What was so revolting was the pretentiousness of the people in the shop - both the proprietors and the customers. Ms. Ayden B makes the point that "Crystals belong to everyone" - and I wouldn't necessarily disagree - but I'm not going to cough up $750 for a geode that occured in nature and just happens to be part of Happy Heart's inventory. The people behind the counter had some very striking (if not eccentric) stone pendants going on... which was kind of charming, but in the process of shopping for my humble pendant and a votive candle holder ($42), I had to endure their endless banter about "expansive chi" and "more power" as they debated what stone beads to use in a custom piece. Another thing that really weirded me out was a woman holding a stone artifact, having her own little singing/meditation ritual, kneeling and bowing on the floor... during my shopping experience. Awkward...! Then... she handed the stone off to another woman behind the counter and asserted that she "could definitely feel more energy" in that particular piece of rock. Yes, yes... there are some very modestly priced items - most would easily fit in the palm of my hand... and the crystal orbs are beautiful, but they get expensive very fast. I think I'll keep looking... perhaps closer to Chinatown, where they're not so commercial and arrogant. read more

I came to this store on the recommendation of a friend. I normally shop at the Sacred Well, which is only two blocks from my home. The larger stones here are definitely overpriced, but they have a good variety of smaller stones at decent prices. However, for some reason the man who worked there, whom I assume is the owner, followed me around and watched me like a hawk as if I came in to do a caper. It was weird, as 1) I came in with my teenage son and his girlfriend and 2) he didn't watch them once or anyone else in the store. At one point I was sifting through a bucket of colored stones for a project, and he kept badgering me to reposition the bucket into his clear view, until he just stood still hovering over me with his arms crossed staring at me. It was extremely uncomfortable, and pretty sick. Listen dude in the store: if I was going to pull a caper, I think I would concentrate on a store that sold diamonds instead of buckets filled with 5 for a dollar stones. And guess what? People don't want to come back and buy your merchandise if they have plenty of money to spend and they're treated like a thief. Just a tip. Looks like I'll be sticking to crystal fairs and The Sacred Well, which is always a pleasant shopping experience where the people are friendly, and no one ever watches over me like I'm about to pull a heist. read more

Where should I start. I have been going to this place for years. I have spent my whole fortune there (many paychecks), hehehe... I love their jade, wasn't interested at first, only crystals for me and then one day, George (Owner) took out these pieces and I was hooked. I actually bought five pieces at one time, all the pieces of jade were from one stone, you can tell by the beautiful color and details. The other important part for me is always the carver. I visited this place yesterday (Sunday) and it was not busy at all. It was a pleasure to browse and admire the big collection of stones and crystals. This was my first experience visiting a store like this but the lady who helped me with my purchase was very friendly and informative. She was able to answer all of my questions and also took the time to show me different variations of the same stones. Some of the stones or jewlery have descriptions of what the stone symbolizes or helps with, which was helpful to a newbie like me. One thing that I wish was more clear are the prices. Some crystals have a set price but others are prices per ounce but the label is so small, it is easy to miss it. Of course I would fall in love with a pricey one. Either way, they have a great collection and the staff is friendly and willing to help you pick the right thing for you. If you have time to browse and learn a thing or two then I reccomend you swing by. read more

While finding this tucked away store is pretty cool and their inventory is extremely diverse from crystals to statues and necklaces, the price for them can be found wayyy cheaper at other stores. The store itself is filled to the brim with crystals, figurines, and bracelets, yet everything in there feels old, dusty, and not very clean. The story is cramped and dimly lit, and many things on display are either not allowed to be touched or questionably perched and crammed shelfs where they are hard to access. Also, while a positive is that the workers are very nice, a negative is that they're not very helpful. When I went, there was a genial old man who keep trying to sell us things but was actually very uninformed of many of those items in the store when I asked what their history, purpose, and backgrounds were. read more

We went there to get some nice rock crystals as Xmas gifts, specifically clear white transparent quartz. They have quite a lot of selections and sizes; but definitely way TOO EXPENSIVE for the price versus quality they have. It's like the Chinese Beverly Hills of Rock Crystals. We shopped a lot in Asian countries and other rock crystals place in US and this place is definitely overpriced. read more

These people made me sick. Literally. They had suggested a meditation and whilst I was in the trance of that meditation they sold me stones that I brought home. And that night I got very very sick. My wife also got sick, in the same way. It was clear that it was these stones. Neither my wife nor I have never experienced anything like this. The owners don't stand by their stuff. Once you bought it, there are no refunds.But they don't tell you that. They are dishonest. They don't inform you that you cannot return items. Somehow you're energy is now on the stones. But they give you stones to handle that who knows how many people have touched before you. They claim they "clean" the stones with "powerful Tibetan sage." Well, why couldn't they "clean" the stones I returned? It's all hogwash. Beware. Enter at your own risk. Better to stay away. These people can make you sick and will rip you off in the process. I should have known. There is a fowl smell in the store when you walk in. No. If you want a great experience with healing arts and stones, visit the Sacred Well on Grand Avenue. And if you want a Rock experience, visit the Rock Shop in Vacaville. Now those are treasures. read more

I adore this place and the people. They are knowledgeable, helpful, friendly, and will take time with you. They have an GREAT selection and some BEAUTIFUL pieces. They're prices are fair on average - a tad bit pricey in comparison to some others, but you can most likely get a good amount of the stones you desire in one spot. This store is amazing-serene ambiance with sounds of nature and birds...and while the stones may seem pricey, it's the knowledge and experience that the owners impart with the sale that will earn them repeat business. I am new to meditation and was seeking help with "opening up" to other communication, remembering and interpreting dreams, and grounding myself in the process. They guided me through a fifteen minute meditation as I sat with three stones (selenite, amber fossil, jet) in each palm. I normally love crystal stores, but this place needs a serious overhaul. A lot of inventory seems to have been sitting in the same places for a very, very, long time, and the atmosphere has a stale, museum-like feel. There was an older couple that seemed nice, but as we were looking around a younger man came in with a horribly sour scowl, and a seriously stank vibe. Maybe their son? At any rate, he made the environment much more unpleasant, so we quickly made our exit. Someone once said to me that the name of this store is a total misnomer, and now I can clearly see why. George seems to be dedicated to his area, but you have to be really open minded to be able to absorb his approach.
