First it was ToGos because it was nearby my work. Then last week was Portos pastrami. Then I saw the Hat last Friday so I knew I was destined to finally try the Hat today for the first time. First of all I appreciated the fact that even though they were extremely busy, they called our number fairly quick. First look, the pastrami looked humongous and the turkey sandwich looked lean. And that damn chilli cheese fries looked like a heart attack indeed. That was just way too much. Perhaps it was meant to be shared for like ten people. I get it. Liked the pastrami since it wasn't too salty but salty enough. Liked it dipped so it didn't feel so dry. Turkey sandwich was ok but not enough turkey, it was all bread and lettuce. I find myself here after a shopping spree at Brea Mall and it's the only time I'll ever go here since every location of The Hat is far from where I live. If you're near The Hat and you're not blessed to live near one, always take the opportunity to get a pastrami sandwich or pastrami chili cheese fries from them. The last time I went I saw a few teenagers each eating their own order of pastrami fries. The Pastrami Dip comes with pastrami, mustard and pickles. You can also add Swiss, American, or cheddar cheese to your sandwich for an extra charge! The chili cheese fries are deliciously filling and come in an awfully large portion size; make sure to eat with caution or bring a friend or two to share with. I have tried the 'Roast Beef with au jus' and it is also quite tasty. If you are debating between The Hat's pastrami or roast beef, I would definitely try the pastrami first. As The Hat is located somewhat near Brea Mall, Cal State Fullerton, etc., I rarely see this drive-thru or inside/outside dining area empty. The workers are friendly and efficient in getting out the food as quickly as possible. Service & Wait Time I don't ever recall waiting in line for minutes to order my food. The workers are very efficient and friendly. The hat is an institution in the San Gabriel Valley, and it holds true in the OC as well. Their pastrami is decadent, and as about as good as it gets, possibly even better than some downtown eateries, who shall remain nameless. As for price, you get a lot for your money, with heaping servings of french fries and onion rings that can feed four grown men easily. My only regret is that it's no secret that you get your money's worth here at "The Hat", so finding a table is a problem. This is the largest of the restaurants I've been to, and the smallest is at the corner of Garfield & Valley. Try the burger with pastrami loaded so high that you have to unlock your jaw, or cut it in half to get some corner action going on. The New Year's diet continues. I made a conscious decision to get off the freeway at Imperial Hwy so I could hit up Wendy's. Not a bad choice with their healthy chick sandwich. Hey, the diet is ruined so why bother going half way and deleting the Fried stuff? I'll hit the gym on Saturday. The sammy was as great as I remembered it. Lots of juice in the roll, pickle and mustard. The pastrami is not the worlds best but it was tasty and salty and just plain decadent. The rings were, by far, the best onion rings I have ever had. For $3, they filled a brown bag. Really, a whole stinking bag of rings. I was able to stop the insanity and throw away about 3/4 of them. If you order anything other than a pastrami dip or the chili cheese fries you are sinning here. The Hat has been around forever, they know what they are doing, trust them. The pastrami is not the greatest in the world, but it sure is tasty. I prefer mine just the way it is made: hot pastrami, bread is dipped, mustard and pickles. It is the only way you should eat a pastrami sandwich! Now the chili cheese fries are another story. They are ginormous, greasy and taste so good. There is not way you could eat an order by yourself, unless you were really hungry, but there are great to be shared by more than one person. If you do not eat them quick enough though, the bottom ones will become greasy. For better chili cheese fries... order a pastrami sandwich, what ever pastrami doesn't fit in the roll, put it on top of the fries. read more
