The Hat has good fries and they give you a nice amount. Large is good for 2-3 to share! We used to love the pastrami's, but the last couple of times the bread wasn't the freshest and they were stingy with the mustard. And, they REFUSE TO GRILL ONIONS FOR THEIR BURGERS! Who does that? The food at the Simi Valley location is usually good and you get fairly good size portions. If you order the fries or onion rings you'll get enough to feed possibly two people. However if you use the drive thru good luck. They haven't fixed the broken speaker for years. You can never hear or understand what they are saying when you order. They can repeat the order or ask you a question but you'll never know what they are saying because the speaker is so messed up. I think this makes their restaurant look cheap and tacky. It also makes ordering difficult. How many more years will go by before they have it repaired?! My other issues is the workers. They are very business like but not too friendly. I don't understand what the problem is. I've been at the counter ordering food many times and it would be nice to talk to someone who was even the tiniest bit friendly. They need to get some customer service skills. They also never give you an actual receipt that shows the amount they charged for each item. I always just hope that what they say I need to pay is correct because although every other restaurant I've ever gone to in my life gives you a printed receipt that shows the price of each item you purchased, this place must feel like it's not necessary. This is in simple terms, a fast food pastrami sandwich, which includes the same fast food quality in the sides as well. For example what I ordered: The Pastrami Dip with everything: this includes lettuce, tomato, onion, pickles, and mustard. They pile the pastrami on the sandwich. What holds this sandwich back from being much better to me is the bread. This is a very cheap, standard white roll bread. Flavorless and texturally like dry air. It's just meant to hold the meat in place which in any really good sandwich is not the case. To me the texture and flavor of the bread is the first thing I notice. So while all the other ingredients seemed "ok", it was lackluster at best. Chili Cheese Fries: visually the fries covered in chili and melted cheese looks fabulous. But one bite and I realized the chili tasted like pasty refried beans. The cheese definitely helped the situation. The fries were soggy to be expected to an extent due to the chili on top. But it was again, lackluster. I won't go as far as saying it was bad food, because it wasn't. It was ok food. It was fast food, or slightly better than fast food. They just celebrated 70 years of business last year and has many locations. They are most well known for their pastrami sandwiches. They come on a delicious french roll but you can ask for it on sourdough if you prefer it that way. My partner isn't a fan of pastrami so he got the tuna and was very happy with the amount of tuna he received and the size. All of their sandwiches are definitely big enough for two people to share. My husband had never been to The Hat. I went for the first time, about 32 years ago, when I lived in Pasadena. Their wet fries became an instant favorite & my love affair has lasted thru the years. Yesterday he & I went to this location for his very first taste. We ordered a ton of food so he could try different things...yes, we had tons of leftovers. But I also got a side of gravy. They were really good & topped with lots of cheese. Buuuuut The Hat will always be all about the wet fries for me. So glad I got a side of gravy to dunk the fries that didn't have chili. Yesterday I tried their roast beef au jus for the first time and it was super delicious! My husband loved the pastrami dip.
