Love the vibes in this cocktail bar! Last night was my second time coming here and the cocktails are top notch. My friend and I both had an espresso martini to start. It was a good espresso martini for sure! We then tried their signature cocktails. I had the high tea and I loved it! It was tart and refreshing. My friend got the Mary Poppins. It had a peppery kick, so if you like more savory drinks, you will love this. Both had the cutest presentation! I would definitely come back here for cocktails. Great drinks that are properly crafted, amazing vibes (slightly noisy and packed during peak but lighting allows you to enjoy lose yourself in the vibes) The bartenders and the staff are fairly attentive and your drinks are made fairly promptly after you order. The menu itself has a good variety of drink options as well as some food. I didn't try any as the kitchen was closed by then, but definitely will be back to snack on a plethora of small bites. Think chic cocktail spot that still offers a reasonably priced full bar if cocktails are not your jam. The ambience allows you to feel like you're in a laid back bar with good music without feeling like you're in a typical sports bar or dive bar (nothing wrong with them but this place hits the right notes when you want a nice drink without the pretentiousness a cocktail spot may have but still elevated and enjoyable rather than out of place like cocktails at a sports bar) Definitely a nice date spot but be forewarned, definitely tight squeeze and loud during peak. It's a very non-assuming bar from the outside, but it's very cute and cozy on the inside (and feels kinda rustic, but in a charming way) The bar tenders are also really sweet and were really helpful with the recommendations! For me, that's The Headless Widow in the East Village. Not that I mind my recent visit there with friends... but I would say the ambiance-candlelit and mood lighting-just seems right for a date night. (I'm writing that down to remember for myself). I had the Smokey and the Bandit (mezcal and strawberry) and the Gingerman (normally vodka, but I switched it out with whiskey and ginger). I also had a sip of my friend's drink called the High Tea, but I can't recall the ingredients. Beyond drinks, we got calamari, fried oysters, and a plate of nachos. Real fancy, I know. I won't even try to say which drink is my favorite, because each new one served was an absolute taste sensation, and seemingly even better than the last. Do yourself a favor and try to avoid your old favorites (though they're also bound to be beautifully done), and let the bartender (especially Eddy) serve you up something just right. As food goes, each thing I've had was sublime, and even with the small'ish menu they have a pretty full range of nosh - seems like I tend to go for soft pretzels and nachos, or ceviche and mussels. (Pretty sure they have fare for the steak and pasta tastes too.) I should mention that the ambience is lovely, dark and intimate, lit by candles and dim sconces... reminiscent of an old port tavern. Definitely great for a classy ladies night or a romantic date, but It can get a little loud due to its popularity and minimal spacing between tables/stools. He guided me to the bar and I was met with bartender Keith. Aside from the delicious and *unique* drink, the service really made the experience memorable. I'm sorry I didn't get to them sooner I was looking for a unique drink so I was between their Willy Wonka and their Hot Toddy. He helped me choose the Willy Wonka and MAN!! We were grabbing drinks while waiting for an event to start nearby. Ended up parking close to this spot and decided to walk in after deciding against a dive bar. Immediately upon entry we were greeted by a particular waiter--- whose name he didn't throw and I didn't catch. Water is served and the service was attentive all the way through. Four stars only because the ceiling had some very visible water damage and bubbles that looked ready to pop any minute. Otherwise, the place looks cozy and has a intimate atmosphere. The drinks are delicious, especially crafted and made me want to try everything on the menu. Particularly I've had the Typsy scale, smokey and the Bandit and the Guillotini. This review honestly breaks my heart to write. The Headless Widow has always been one of our favorite bars in NYC. We are regulars, we've recommended it to friends and family countless times, and it has consistently been one of our top suggestions when people ask where to go. We love the ambience, the drinks, and the overall vibe of the place -- which is exactly why last night's experience was so shocking and disappointing. When my husband and I walked in, there were tables open. The bar itself seemed mostly full, but the small wooden tables by the window with barstools were almost completely empty. We told the server who greeted us that we were hoping to sit either at the bar or at one of those window barstools. He told us we could stand at the bar to order, which we agreed to. While grabbing menus from the bar, we noticed that only one woman was sitting at the window barstools -- all the other stools were empty. I spoke to her, and she kindly told us she was about to leave anyway because her friends were running late and she had another reservation. She said we were welcome to take her spot. I sat down, and my husband stayed by the bar to look at the menu. Almost immediately, the same server came over and told us we couldn't sit there and that we had to stand at the bar. At this point, the woman who had been sitting there stepped in and explained to him that she was leaving and that we had spoken to her. She even seemed confused herself, saying she didn't understand why it was an issue since she was getting up and no one else was sitting there. At that point, I told my husband that I no longer felt welcome, and we decided to leave. It completely ruined our night and left a really bitter taste -- not just because of the situation, but because this was a place we genuinely loved and felt connected to. It's sad to walk away from an establishment you've supported for years, but feeling unwelcome and disrespected is not something we're willing to overlook. I hope management takes this seriously and provides better training to their staff so guests are treated with basic respect and kindness. Josh was our bartender, well he's a mixologist by passion and a bartender by trade. He took amazing care of us all afternoon, and mixed me great concoctions and my wife a tasty Pimm's Cup. Food was good too. I loved the shrimp and the pretzel lasted until the next day's breakfast. The Headless Widow would be a great bar to meet friends and hang out. With that reputation for those two happy hour drinks we decided to try other things - I got the high tea and it's GORGEOUS, and that cocktail combination was magical. The spritz of rose water at the end was just the cherry top. I felt so classy drinking at this place! Yes the cocktails are absolutely a dream but what really makes this experience top of line is the amazing hospitality we experienced from our server and the staff in general. We came on a Friday night, and the restaurant was sort of packed and we didn't get help for a while. We ordered some mussels & the wagyu burger and those were delicious. Mussels were flavorful, lots of sauce on the bottom of the plate!!! The wagyu burger was the best burger I've had in a long time. It was juicy & had perfect ratio of lettuce and the other condiments.
