Both times the place has been packed but got lucky and only had to wait 5-10 minutes for a table to open up. 10/10 would come again. The location of this place is a bit of a walk from the train. It's almost 2 avenues from the 6 line. If it's too hot or cold, you might not want to make the trek but I think it's worth it. The place itself is a very traditional bar and restaurant. They had decorated it for Christmas with the birch trees around the columns and a bunch of other holiday decorations. It felt very warm and inviting. Happy hour was great! $5 draft beers, $8 wine and $10 cocktail. I had the Allagash draft, which is always good. Happy hour also included $1 oysters, which is the main reason why we went there. They were blue point oysters and so good! Large and juicy, they were worth the walk in the freezing cold and snow. We got 4 doezn between 5 people because why wouldn't you? We also ordered some of their hot food. I liked the fact that it wasn't an extensive menu so you don't get decision fatigue. We ordered the nachos, slider and the grilled cheese. The nachos were a large serving so it was good plate to share. With cheese, guac, tomatoes, olives and really crispy chips. So good! The sliders were okay. They were what you expect sliders to be. I wasn't particularly impressed by them but they weren't bad. I didn't try the grilled cheese but it was very big and came with a side bowl of olives. I saw a sign for happy hour so I walked in to pass the time. It was early, the night was young, and the venue, a calm before the storm. No expectations. Played it safe, grabbed some red wine and sipped. And then I moved to the cocktails, not many available for happy hour but the ones that were, all excellent. I'll probably get flamed for this review, given the 4.5 star rating--but I don't care. Our experience here sucked harder than a newly charged Dyson. It was cold and rainy, so all the windows were closed. Inside, the music was BLASTING. Like, jackhammers in your ears blasting. It was also terrible music, but that's beside the point. It was club-level loud in an enclosed space that barely fit 30 people. The three of us were seated right next to each other and still couldn't hear each other. We asked for them to turn the music down, which they begrudgingly agreed to do for about 15 min, then proceeded to crank it right back up even louder. Did I mention that we never had a consistent server and had to wait ~20 min just to place our order? At some point, I think the manager himself came over to ask how we were doing. We told him what had happened, that there was no way we would stay for another round--even though we wanted to, as the drinks were pretty good--if we couldn't hear each other. He looked me straight in the eye and said, "It's a bar." Actually, no. It's not. It's a restaurant, with restaurant seating. No bar seating whatsoever except for a few stools along the walls (3 of which were occupied by us). 95% of the space was low tables and chairs for parties of 2-4 max. Maybe in pre-COVID times, this place was laid out like a bar. But not now. Also, a man telling three women, "It's a bar"--like we're too stupid to understand how bars work--has to be the epitome of mansplaining. We paid our bills as quickly as we could (considering no one checked in on us for 20-30 min at a time, and most servers ignored our many attempts to flag them down), and got the hell out of there to a place with music at a reasonable volume. Did I mention we're all young and of sound hearing? Headless Widow must be doing so well during the pandemic if the staff would rather blast crappy music to drive off paying customers than keep said music down to a reasonable level. Now that many business are back on their feet since Covid, I've visited many bars and I still see bar tenders using their bare hands to garnish drinks. I just take it as it is and pray I'll be okay. I recently did a food and drinks tour with my bestie in NYC. We stumbled upon the Headless Widow while we were waiting for the "Please Don't Tell" speakeasy. I regret that I rushed back to "Please Don't Tell" when my waitlist was up. If I knew then what I know now, I wouldn't have come back. We had the pleasure of meeting Joseph and Eddie. They were both super welcoming and kind. Eddie is a cocktail magician. He made three different drinks based on our personalities, and they were all spot on. Each drink was made to perfection--I'm still thinking about it to this day. I love the ambience and coziness of this bar. It has dim lights with candles and dry flowers at each table. NYC certainly has its share of bars with macabre names. I keep wondering if this is so that those bars will catch my attention when I'm doing a Yelp search. If that's the case, it's working. We were a larger party who came hoping to get seated fairly quickly on a busy Saturday evening, and to our delight, not only were they able to seat us quickly, it was in an outside "building" which we were able to occupy by ourselves. Service was reasonably fast, given the situation, and the drinks were interesting. It was actually kind of fun and entertaining being where we were, because of all the plexiglass doors and windows that had to be opened and closed for us to give and receive our orders, certainly not typical for being seated anywhere else inside or outside. Relatively new bar conveniently located in East village. Came by for happy hour and the place was very cutely decorated with tons of Halloween decorations. They had some pumpkins and hay that gave the place a fresh smell. We were seated immediately on a rainy Wednesday night (had tried two other bars beforehand that were both packed) and our server was quick to take our order. We were told this place has been around for about 3 months. They have happy hour until 8pm which included $10 cocktails, wine, and jumbo shrimp/half dozen oysters came with a free beer. We started with some oysters which were pretty fresh and came with some nice sauces. My boyfriend got the sliders which were honestly so delicious. The patties were a perfect medium rare and each one came with a different topping - cheese, mushrooms and bacon. Cocktails were quite yummy. I ordered a cocktail and oysters with a beer at the same time and our waiter was kind enough for me to finish my cocktail before bringing out the beer.
