This is one of your classic East County establishments. On any given night you'll find the same cats sitting in the same seats with the same drinks in their hands, bleary looking yet cheerful as the night gets older and so do they. The clientele is actually pretty nice from my past experiences. All in all as long as you don't act a fool or stare anyone down (guys know what I'm talking about) then good times all around. The cats in this joint WILL notice if you have a snobby air which will get you stared at. There is the usual assortment of bar flies, cougar packs, and occasional EC rowdies but you'll also get the diamonds in the rough with some pretty hot twenty somethings coming in with their girlfriends from time to time. Friday nights are usually the best as they have karaoke ran by a guy who is the WORST MC of all time. My girl and I get some laughs heckling the guy when he's talking too long lol The drinks are amazing, and like everyone else has said, cheap and very very stiff. One of the main reasons my friends and I stop off at the HH first before dipping over to anywhere else because the booze to mixer ratio is ridiculous. Not very many beers on tap but they'll have the usual classics you'd expect from a dive bar. The bartenders are all very nice and helpful as Cookie, Zach and Gino will have you cracking up after a few. It's gonna have the basic staples of a dive bar in Anytown, USA: slightly aged smell, cracked bar stools held together with tape in some places, tables running off quarters, a sweet little jukebox that has some pretty good pieces on it, and darts that never fly straight. Years ago it looked like a real dive, now it's almost like an upscale sports bar. Plenty of TVs, well lit and they've took out the kitchen to give more floor space. I've found that bars in the EC area are all pretty much the same when it comes to entertainment value as they all have darts, pool, etc. but the HH is an experience on to itself. I spent over 15 years going to the Hearth House. A few years ago, I would have given this place 5 stars - even with the mediocre, unhealthy deep fried food. Not anymore. Despite its "dive bar" status, the place used to have a unique, charming atmosphere with good natured bartenders who treated each other and customers like family. That all changed when the new owner took over. She remodeled the place and it looks nice, but she also remodeled the charm right out of it with her encouragement of back-biting and a lack of loyalty amongst the bartenders. First she tried to shove out a bartender, Gene, who was a fixture of the bar, A wonderful man, he worked there for an eternity and almost everyone who works there now has their job because of him. He got cancer, she got her way and after all of those years of working there (and taking care of her father), according to Gene, she gave him a pathetic severence and never went to see him when he was dying. But she sure as hell didn't hesitate to capitalize on his death and hold a party in his honor [a month after he died]. I don't think Christine is bitter - I think she just saw the place for what it is now rather than what it used to be. As far as I'm concerned, while I still like two of the bartenders, I agree with Gene's family, I hope the place runs out of business so that cowardly, cold-hearted witch and her dis-loyal, ass-kissing employees get what they deserve. read more

You live in La Mesa and need a place to grab a drink after midnight. The choices are pretty glum. Nestled in between a 711 and a liquor store is a quaint little dive bar not for the faint at heart by any means. Bikers, old scruffy men who patronize this place and it's pool tables, skeezy drug using cougar wannabe type ladies, locals who do their best to look like locals.... this place is like school on Saturdays, no class. Funny thing is, I've been here more than once. The drinks can be nice and stiff, although the bartender got your order wrong, just drink the wrong drink and realize it after the fact and get the right drink for free. You have got to get into character when drinking in a joint like this. There were some guys smokin' fat doobies in the back parking lot smoking area. The jukebox was blaring "Cream" by Prince. The tweakers were getting their dart game on and the underage chicks with their thongs pulled out from over their jeans were freak dancing in the middle of it all. I checked out the Hearth house recently, and wow, the new upgrades are amazing! The place looks so good now--super inviting and just a great vibe overall. The highlight was the bartender. I didn't grab her name but she's got long dark blonde hair and lots of tattoos, and she's seriously awesome. She's super friendly, quick with a drink, and just makes you feel like you're in the right place. The cocktails were on point, and the whole experience was just top-notch. A friend and me were looking for a bar close to our places and we stumbled upon this place. Actually, we found this place and then stumbled out of it several hours later. Glad we found this gem near our places - the bartenders are way cool and very fast and friendly, the prices aren't bad, and the atmosphere is chill and friendly. We had a great time as evidenced by how long we stayed and how tough it was to walk a straight line when we left. Don't drive here. Meanwhile I ordered another drink drink. I decided to give burger away cause I feared cook hocked a loogee on my burger. When cook found out I gave burger away he threatened me, so I left w/o 2nd drink or burger.. Very knowledgeable come in and visit when she's working, but you do need a card to play games or pool. I wasn't really sure but she explained everything very well. Great personality.
