We were first in line on this particular day. You order at the window outside, pay, and get a number to take to your table. We were prepared to place our order when they opened. I got the San Luis Sunrise waffle and my wife got the Monte Cristo waffle. They have indoor and outdoor seating. Outdoor seating includes a covered patio as well as tables under umbrellas. There is a glass partition on the patio where you can look out to the ocean while being protected from the wind if there is any. It was a calm sunny day when we were here and we sat in a sunny spot next to the glass where we could see surfers enjoying extended rides on glassy 2-foot waves. In all honesty, I was a little disappointed with my San Luis Sunrise. The bacon was a little too salty and the waffle was a little dry. They do put a sauce on the waffle, but I think I would have preferred a less cooked egg with a little bit of a runny yolk. The sauce didn't do that much for me. In hindsight, I wish I would have added butter and syrup. That being said, the overall flavor was still good and nothing was left on my plate when I was done. This meal is described under the savory options, so now I know what to expect. My wife ordered the Monte Christo and it was as good as I remembered with havarti cheese, a slab of Canadian bacon, and jam on top. Yum! Nothing invigorates like breakfast on the beach. Although this place is more like breakfast on the patio facing the parking lot between you and the beach. But it was still a pretty good time. The food was pretty tasty, maybe not $18 tasty, but I did enjoy the different flavor of the blue corn waffle. The margarita was pretty standard, but the Bloody Mary really stood out. The mix is very tasty and the accoutrements were fun and complimented the drink well. They must charge extra to afford the rent at a place so close to the beach, because it was definitely the most expensive place we ate during our entire time in town. The staff were great though. Helpful and jovial, they provided prompt service and even cleaned our table right away after a bird decided it was actually a bathroom. Luckily this was before any food came out. We had thought about stopping at the Hidden Kitchen many times before, but we always passed it by because it seemed like it had too limited a menu. Based on the line and reviews, we decided to take a chance this time, and we're glad we did! Here is what we noticed: - Food was excellent! We got the Santa Lucia blue corn tacos and the Cayucos cowboy waffle and split both. The portion sizes are very big. It's hard to adequately describe the food because it's so unique and delicious. - The back patio is really comfortable to sit at, but there's also indoor seating. - You place your order at the window outside the front of the building, get a number, and then seat yourself. The one annoying thing is that their credit card machine asked for tips starting at 20% when you actually get your own water and coffee, bus your own dirty dishes, and seat yourself. I know that those machines enable you to provide a custom or no tip amount, but it's not as easy...It's one of my pet peeves to have the default amount start so high when the only service that's provided is their bringing your food to your table. - Prices are a bit higher like everywhere else, but warranted given the quality of the food. - We thought that with the line and number of people in the restaurant that it would take a while for us to get our food, but that wasn't the case. Despite being a local and having ample opportunity to visit Cayucos and walk the beaches, and relax and eat, I often lack the time! I have heard that Hidden Kitchen can have a long wait time, and have only ever eaten there once before. Well, a few weeks ago for my birthday we decided we had the time. It might have been a Thursday, but it was also a holiday so there were plenty of people there for brunch. The wait was not bad, at all! We had enough time to grab a coffee from cute niche mugs of our choosing (fun!), and sit in the sunshine and enjoy the birds on the patio. And then the food arrived!
