This is one of the weirdest speakeasy-style bars I've been to in Seattle, located on Boren, which is outside of the nightlife zone of cap hill. It's not exactly hidden, it's one of those places which you won't think of walking into based on the non-descriptive sign. Went there for a friend's birthday on a weekday evening. It was surprisingly occupied for a weekday. The inside is not too huge, and is decorated with classic old furniture and chandeliers, and paintings on the wall you can actually buy. It is a cross between hipster and classy. The ambiance is more dark, sit down and soft-spoken, good for dates. They also have a vending machine with art pieces, which make for good conversation topics. The drinks are too good. We all got cocktails, and I tried the random thought, which is a scotch whisky based drink, and andy warhol, which is like a cosmopolitan, with a polaroid picture of yourself and your friends. I thought it was just a joke, till the bartender came out with the camera. I saw the bartender creating the drinks, and could see him putting the time and effort in each of our drinks. They also turned out to be excellent. If I was only rating based on cocktails, this was a five-star without a second thought. We got the mezze sampler to eat, which was ok, nothing special. The service was decent. Attentive, but not too friendly or warm. No complains though. I loved the place, and would definitely go often if it was in a better location, and more accessible. Totally recommend the hideout if it's the only place you're planning to go to for the night, or want to start-off here, and then hike up the hill to the pine/pike area. read more

Another one of my favorite bars in Seattle. Best mixologists and some of the most inventive drinks in Seattle. Not to mention the art on the walls (and the art vending machine in the back of the bar) is awesome. Friendly people, and not the den of obnoxious hipsterdom it might seem at first glance. i don't even want to write this review to let others know about this hidden gem but if it wasn't for yelp, i wouldn't have know about it. i've passed this place a million times since it's close to seattle u and the hospitals. such a nice intimate spot for after work drinks, girls night out, and especially for a date. the bartender really knows his stuff and i was in awe watching him do his magic and explain about these special cherries he has to get. i miss getting a nice cocktail that i can take my time to drink and appreciate and sit in a nice atmosphere. this place has all of that. i love the decor with chandelirs and lots of art read more

I'm kind of a barfly for craft cocktail places; specifically ones that can make an authentic sazerac. I was trained in mixology from the head bartender at The Hunt Club, so while not an experienced professional, I have quite an interest in nice boozy hangouts! I brought an artsy girl here once a few years back and she loved it. I've been back 3-4 times recently and even though they're much more known and well reviewed, it is friendly, warm and watching Kristin make drinks while wooing patrons is great entertainment. This is a good spot to grab a drink with friends or take a date--it's a little off the beaten path, so maybe not ideal for bar-hoppers... but once you sit down at the Hideout, you probably won't want to leave anytime soon. It's a small but open space that is full of art and coctail enthusiasts. I've yet to discover my favorite drink on their menu, but I don't mind working my way down the delicious list! i'm almost hesitant to write a review because i don't want the place to get so popular that it would lose its 'hideout' mystique ... the less people know, the better for me? it's an excellent bar experience. it's absolutely not a dive. it's got both an artsy cocktail-bar feel and neighborhood-bar feel at the same time. i'm neither an art nor cocktail aficionado, but i feel completely welcome here. it never feels intimidating. sara made me possibly the best cocktail i've ever had. i told her that, as primarily a beer drinker, i don't have cocktails very often, so i asked if she could recommend something i might like. sure enough, the drink she made for me was amazing. and alex is so welcoming that she gives the place immediate warmth and familiarity, making you feel that, yes, this is your refuge behind the dark velvet curtains. and she's a great mixologist on her own right, of course. do pay the hideout a visit. try not to pass the word too much, though! read more

I've been going to the Hideout off and on since 2008. It's great to sit and chat with friends on the comfy couch, in the dimly lit space. I don't usually order off the menu because I want to see what the Bartender is going to be create with my flavor profile. My friends have ordered off the menu and all our drinks came back perfectly strong with great depth of flavor. It's nice to find a spot that is a hideout away from the mainstream trendies that are up on the hill. read more

It's dark, it's arty, there are chandeliers and all their cocktails use fresh-squeezed juice. I never thought I'd like absinthe and gin together but the Corpse Reviver No. 2 made me a believer. If you're not looking for it, you won't find it. Black curtains over the windows keeps this place hidden in plain sight on the corner of Madison and Boren; a scripted H on the doors and a neon cocktails sign is all that indicate what lies inside. Local artist bar with a unique flair! All over the walls, art surrounds you that is available for purchase. I used the art dispenser while I was here and got a mini book. They have a drink called the Andy Warhol... It comes with a Polaroid! The DJ was great too! We danced the night away. read more

I had no idea this place existed until I met up with a few friends from school here. What a fantastic (albeit REALLY hard to find in the dark) little spot nestled in First Hill. It was a perfect place for a mid-week drink late at night. The crowd had a nice chill vibe about them and the big collection of art on the walls will keep you plenty busy if you feel like checking out of the conversation. I wish I had paid attention to what this place looked like from the outside because I have a feeling I'm going to have a hard time finding it again. But it'll be worth the search. read more

Awesome local art all over the walls, a badass bartender who ran the whole bar herself, and drinks that will knock you on your ass. These people are serious about mixology and it shows. The Hideout is a fantastic intimate place. I cannot possibly agree with this last poster, who appears to have some kind of chip on her shoulder (not to mention is inarticulate). I had a great experience there and Justin, who was as friendly and thoughtful as can be, offered the perfect cocktails for the evening, all done beautifully. My partner owns a restaurant/bar and was incredibly impressed with his knowledge and demeanor and the efficiency with which the place is run. I highly recommend this place for a evening with friends or a date -- the atmosphere is cool without being pretentious and the crowd seems friendly (perhaps save for the likes of Angi, who perhaps should stick to Belltown. I think Amber digs diva folk like you, no?). The only reason I am not giving 5 stars is the food options were not the greatest, but that's being nit picky I think. read more

Love the Hideout. And right now is a great time because they have some lovely porn on the walls. I'm difficult to please having been in the bar business for the better part of 2 decades. Sometimes the crowd is too young for my taste being an old curmudgeon (I'm 39). If you too suffer from generation gapitis and detest every girl that ends all of her statements with the inflection of a question; then go early in the evening when its mostly neighborhood regs. Justin the bartender/manager is the perfect combo of amenable with a light crusty coating that makes him fun to conversate with. Oh yeah...he can make a (great) drink, direct traffic behind the bar, notice an empty glass, acknowledge a new patron and never miss a beat in your conversation. It is truly a dying art. Have a seat at the bar and enjoy a single malt or a margarita with Damiana and cinnamon (delicious) and enjoy the artwork without asking too many inane questions. If you are a connoisseur of Vodka Redbulls and feel insulted when you have to go an evening without a Bud Light then this is not the place for you. If you follow some basic bar courtesies such as not inquiring: "what's good here?" , "did you paint all these paintings yourself?" , "do you make a good ______?" then you should have a lovely time. read more

I like this place. It is totally a Hideout and I would have never knew such an awesome bar existed by where I lived until one of my friend's had a party here on a Thursday. Drinks were nice and stiff. Loved the art covered walls and the darkness of it. You can come as you are here. It can get a bit crowded. Played hip hop music at a moderate level. You can have nice conversations here without screaming over the music. I will be back. I feel funny adding an update to a review that was already positive, but I've gotta give a shout-out to the talented bartenders that work here. Busy as the place was on Saturday night, the classy gentleman of a bartender was working genuine sorcery. I don't know how bartenders keep their cool and focus in such a loud and bustling environment, but he was holding it down and serving drinks crafted like works of art. I had one of the best drinks I've ever had, the aptly named Strangers with Candy. I didn't want it to end. Turned my whole night around before it could go south. My favorite bar in all of Seattle. Impeccably made drinks (the juice is even squeezed fresh for cocktails which require it), interesting rotating art, a great mix of people, even a house zine! The bartenders are personable, and remember your drinks. it's a beautiful, cozy, attentive place that we found our new apartment as close to as we could.
