I had the garlic steak sandwich with grilled mushrooms and onions. It was amazing. Best steak I've eaten at a restaurant. Usually it is never seared enough. This was a flavorful, tender steak. And there was so much of it on the sandwich! My boyfriend had the burger with American cheese and it was huge and juicy. I tried it and loved it. Delicious outdoor dining on the patio. We had great service and wonderful food. We started with wings. They were huge and tasty, I was worried we wouldn't be able to finish all of them. Then onto a salad with blue cheese dressing. This too was a hit. Also bread on table was delicious. Meal was a mixed seafood in red spicy sauce over pasta. Perfect combination of fish, sauce, and pasta. Lastly we ended with a key lime pie dessert. Not a fan. It seemed like it was trying to be an ice cream pie type dessert, but the flavor and texture were wrong. Great meal as always, love this place. The food is delicious (especially the scallops wrapped in bacon) and the service excellent. The owners greet everyone and Francisco, his wife and family could not be warmer. This historic restaurant is under new ownership and new chef. Same comfy feel, similar menu but food is surprisingly good. We always came here because we liked the history but now the food is good too. Come back and give it a try! I had the shrimp with garlic and tomatoes and spinach. Had a lovely time on their outdoor patio! I loved their French onion soup, though it's better shared as it is a lot at once. The lamb was good and their buffalo ranch mashed potatoes a fun and yummy twist. Their house made salad dressing was so good I used it for my bread too! The Hoffman House is still of my favorite places around. The building alone is beautiful for anyone with an appreciation of early American history. This restaurant was such a great find, a truly a gem tucked in Kingston. We stopped in as we were staying at the Best Western down the road for some snowboarding at Hunter Mountain. The hostess sat us right in front of this beautiful grand fireplace. Apparently this restaurant was converted from a home built in the 1700s. Hoffman House is very old school. So the menu could use an update, but my goodness...the food and service is just so, so good that I really can't find it in me to complain or give them anything less than 4 stars. Even though the cranky foodie inside wants me to. So I will keep going there, for both special occasions, or a martini and some appetizers at the bar or just because I'm in the mood. Because those old school recipes are still around for a reason. They're good. And while I love experimental cuisine, it's very difficult to find someone who is this successful with the food of my past, which will always hold a special place in my heart. read more

A cut above, Hoffman House is worth searching out. Don't let the stone building built in the 1600's fool you. The food is solid. One of the top 5 meals of the year. We had the French onion soup, the amazing Rangoon app special and two pasta dishes and everything was unbelievable. The service was outstanding and we had 3 separate people come over to make sure we enjoyed everything and to see if they could help. I love downtown Kingston. There are some terrific restaurants here. Problem is, you show up and they're closed. Or serving hours have changed. Or parking is just not going to happen. Hoffman House has avoided all the above. Add to the fact, really well done standards plus interesting specials makes this a downtown destination. Billy at the bar makes a great martini and is quick with a story as he is a well crafted cocktail. Plus Washington slept here. Even if he didn't it's a happy thought considering who our president is today. Cheers! read more

The restaurant is inside an old Dutch home; the description on the menu reads that it was built at least before the late 1670s. Food was great, I had the Fisherman's Platter. The double baked potatoes were very good and creamy. Portion sizes were on the large side so we didn't have any room for dessert unfortunately. Where do I begin?!?! Stopped over in this cute town and decided to have dinner at the Hoffman House. And boy was I delighted...the food was AMAZING! I started off with the french onion soup and it was packed with so much flavor and so filling. I could of had it as my meal. The dinner salad is perfect along with the yummy dressing. I ordered the Pasta Poulet and couldn't of been more pleased. So tasty and robust. The ambiance was numero uno next to the fireplace on a chilly and snowy night. It was an evening full of wonderful food, drinks and company. I look forward to returning in the spring/summer to dine on the patio. If you get a chance please make a stop at the Hoffman House...you truly will not be disappointed! read more

I love the Hoffman house. The atmosphere is warm and inviting, especially in winter. I've sat near the fireplace many times. I usually get the garlic steak with some bacon wrapped scallops as an appetizer, but anything I've had there has usually been tasty and good. The wait staff is helpful and informed. The variety of breads they offer you up front are a nice prelude to a good dinner. They don't rush you here and I like that. It isn't cheap, but you get what you pay for. The salad is even good. In the summer you can sit outside and their menu offers a great variety. I go here for special dinners like birthdays and find it worth the cost. You don't have to dress fancy either.I would recommend it to anyone who wants to savor their food, enjoy the ambiance and good conversation with their dinner mates. read more

We stood in the doorway a solid 5 minutes - no one acknowledged us or asked if we needed help, a table, etc. And at least 3 of the waitstaff walked right by us...talk about poor customer service. The average age at 7pm was 70; by the time we left at 830, a younger crowd was starting to arrive. The menu is meh - nothing exciting. The calamari needed seasoning. Again - burgers were great and cooked to order. We had the feeling that since we didn't hold a senior citizen discount card, that we shouldn't be there...we felt very uncomfortable and very unwanted. I've been here a few times for lunch and the sandwhiches and vibes were much different...not Hurrying back for dinner any time soon. read more

Great atmosphere, very cool place, having grown up in an 1808 Federal-style farmhouse in MD, I really felt a home in this very authentic, 1679 building...the old doors, the crooked floors, the big fireplaces and the beams just reminded me (and my brother) of 'The Farm'. We met my brother there for lunch as it's equidistant from our respective homes - I wanted something different, so I googled, "Historic restaurant Kingston NY" and this popped up. Since it was a Saturday, I made reservations which I'm glad I did as the place was pretty much full by the time we left. Service was a little slow, but we were not in a hurry and it wasn't an issue. The three of us had soup, two French onion and one Manhattan clam chowder. The French onion was very good, the clam chowder was OK - a little salty and a little lacking on the clams, but OK. My wife ordered the French Onion steak sandwich, my brother ordered the Napoleon roast beef sandwich and I had the daily quesadilla (chicken, caramelized onions, Colby Jack cheese). First impression - portions are huge, My quesadilla came with heaping sides of refried beans and rice along with sour cream and a guacamole sauce. Probably the thickest quesadilla I've ever had - the tortilla appears homemade, layered, crispy, crunchy, really good...overall, I was very pleased. My wife and I share meals, so I did have some of her sandwich. The steak was very good, the cheese and onions we great, but the roll was REALLY big and overwhelmed the flavor of the meat. She ended up taking off the roll and eating the steak with a fork. I didn't try my brother's sandwich, but he reported it was very good. We all took home a generous portion of our sandwiches (I mentioned the portion size...). On the way home, my wife mentioned that that would be a great place to meet my brother a couple of times a year as we don't get to see him too much, and by the time we got home, my brother had called me and suggested the same. I would definitely recommend the Hoffman House if you are in the area - one of the things I noticed was the servers and the owners greeting a lot of people as friends, so it is definitely a favorite of the locals. read more

My father was in town and he wanted a martini and shrimp cocktail. a local restaurant was booked so I searched on Yelp and learned taht finding shrimp cocktail as an appetizer was difficult. Hoffman House was the only restaurant within many miles that had it. So, off we went after making reservations. Like many past reviewers pointed out. Hoffman House is an old-school restaurant. Read the history of the place which is the first page of the menu. i found it very interesting. Anyway, my dad got a martini, but he told me he wanted more olives. I searched for our server, but couldn't find her. Two minutes later, she arrived with extra olives for my dad. She said, " I heard him." That was very impressive. The rest of dinner was perfect, to say the least. The food was delicious, fresh and plentiful. We all took leftovers home. Our water glasses were constantly filled. The service was spot on and not overbearing. I left Hoffman House with one complaint though. The empty martini glasses were never removed from the table. I thought that was strange for such a classy place. I mean, after we paid the bill and got up to leave, the glasses were still on the table. But this was not enough to reduce my rating. My wife wants to go back to Hoffman House and that says allot. My wife has a refined palate. I will look forward to it. There was much to try on their menu. read more

This spot was amazing last year when we tried! Great atmosphere, food, everything. We came last year on the last night when ownership was changing to the head chef. Fast forward a year, it was a hot mess inside. The server, hostess, etc. barely spoke English and we had no clue what they were saying. The server was trying so hard but there was another waitress who took our order already and he was always 5 minutes late with coming back after her. Atmosphere was weird and the management never said anything when two ladies were getting seriously disrupting and disturbing playing youtube music from their table. The pork loin special for Halloween was really bad and had no taste and was so dry. This was a flop, but will come back in another year to give it another try. read more

Have been here several times over the past 10 years. Has definitely gone downhill. Was there for dinner, two couples, recently. Food was fair and all dinners were served barely warm. One of us had a drink on the rocks, and they had the audacity to charge an extra two dollars for the "rocks" or ice. In all my years, I have never seen a restaurant charge extra for the ice ..... incredible. The prices overall are reasonable, but I do not plan to return here anytime soon. read more

Sadly, I think our New Year's Eve dinner will be our last meal here - both the service and food were incredibly disappointing. Our waitress was very nice, but she seemed busy with other tables in other rooms and barely attended to us - we spent long gaps fo time sitting by ourselves wondering if we were forgotten about it. It took forever to get bread (came with our apps)...and then everything come out in rapid fire. I had 2 cosmos and both times asked for them to be shaken very good - both times the drinks were stirred, which is not how you make a cosmo. Blech. The food was universally tasteless, the lobster tails tasted frozen, and the seafood risotto was especially not enjoyable - simply the wrong mix of flavors, and watery not creamy. All of this was very disheartening, as we have eaten here many times before and generally had a good experience. I'm willing to overlook the occasional bad night, but last night was one too many for the Hoffman House. read more

We had the clams casino appy, little on small side but very tasty. I had the New York strip steak with blue cheese and shallots. Best steak I've had in years, hands down. We usually avoid restaurants on holidays. I don't like the limited menu, the crowds, and feeling rushed. However I hadn't planned a "special" dinner for Valentines Day so we ordered out. Great decision. We were greeted right away by the friendly staff and then the owner. My wife had the prime rib which was huge and cooked to perfection. My peppercorn crusted tuna with wasabi drizzle was outstanding and also cooked to perfection (minimally grilled). I also had the chipotle chicken pineapple quesadilla that was very flavorful and the green sauce, not sure what was in it, was outstanding. I loved the historic ambiance and the spirit of the Hoffman House. I had a delicious roasted duck and also tried the grilled lamb chops. This place is awesome. This is the classic neighborhood tavern/restaurant. This is where you take your first date and where you take your wife for your 25th anniversary. In summer the patio is delightful. In winter, get a table near one of the three fireplaces. At any rate, enjoy the classic menu or the daily specials that change every day.
