I had a wonderful weekend in Iron Mountain, and one of the highlights was my tasty lunch at Holiday Kitchen. We started the meal with some delicious homemade bread and ranch -hot out of the oven and melted in my mouth! I had a chicken wrap which was uniquely made with crumbled cheese on the tortilla -it was very different and delicious! The warm, friendly host staff kept my water and tea coming and the locals smiled at me as I walked in and out. A very friendly, comfortable and homey vibe -I felt like I was at lunch with a room full of family! I would definitely return here -there are many different sandwiches including the "grinder" that I looked tasty. I would reccomend this place to anyone who wants a delicious, affordable, warm meal! A MUST if you are passing through this area of the UP! Northern hospitality! read more

My husband and I went there for breakfast and the waitress look at us like we was a bother and we sat down and order the waitress didn't want to say anything, and then we got our food it was Luke warm and gross and it seems we wasted money for nothing. Not really fond of this place. When we first moved here 15 years ago we went for breakfast at least 2 or 3 times a week and also for Friday fish fry. The food was good, however, on four different occasions we experienced a little something extra in the food which was disgusting and after complaining to the manager/owner he got angry with us rather than apologizing and fixing the problem. Good Friday fish fry--all you can eat--with the usual cod, perch, shrimp, and walleye-- and clams!

AVOID ... Travelling on past glories. I have eaten here two dozen times over the past 5 years. The last two times have had problems with the food -- cold food that was supposed to be hot and a "chicken wrap" that lacked chicken!! Will not be back. read more

We have always come here for the soup, salad and bread, but not after today. Holiday Kitchen has an absolutely ridiculous policy which does not allow children to share meals/portions. I had three children 5 and under with me and the owner wanted me to buy three separate $4.99 kids' meals to feed them. And when I asked THE OWNER of it was permissible for the children to share a $7.99 appetizer, she repeated her restaurant policy - No splitting meals. These were young kids, not grown adults! This place has lost my family's business for good. read more

When I walked into the Holiday Kitchen in Iron Mountain MI, I was very impressed with the variety of items on the menu - from basic comfort food (burgers, sandwiches) to ethnic foods (burritos, pasta, Asian stir frys, ravioli) to attempts at healthy and gourmet foods (steaks, fish and a variety of salads). Was happy to see that most dishes come in two sizes- hate wasting food or paying for more food than I can eat- when on the road it is not always possible to take a doggie bag. The bread was very good- crisp warm and fresh. The soups are home made daily and there is always a choice of four or five different ones every day. Crinkle fries- crispy and plenty- yeaa! A little disappointed in the house salad- was just lettuce, cheese and croutons-could have used a few chunks of vegetables like a tomato some carrots or maybe a slice of cucumber or cabbage. The desert menu was also extensive- get the Heath bar cake- unless you are watching your calories- you will not be disappointed! I recommend- service fast and friendly- will return when back through town. read more

Where did all the cars in the parking lot come from? We got the last parking place in their lot . Figuring it might be a meeting or something, I went in to see if there was seating. Yes, and the number of cars in the lot out numbered the diners. We were visiting from out of town and had along my 91 year old aunt who uses a wheelchair. We had to lift her , in the wheelchair, over the curb from the lot onto the entry level sidewalk. I did not see a handicap approach and there was no sign on the front of the building , indicating where the handicap entry is. First off, I tried to order the roast beef plate lunch to share with my aunt. Oh no, that can't be done. We each ordered a plate lunch as did the third person in our group. The food left us with no particular satisfaction. The beef gravy was too salty. The gravy was sloshed over the open face bread, to the edges of the plate. The only thing that came with the beef and bread was a small bowl of mashed unpeeled red potatoes with more gravy. The bowl had gravy up to the edges and was served on the same plate as the beef. Yes, the beef was tender. The only nice thing about our visit was that we were not rushed. We visited with my aunt and she enjoyed being out for lunch. Lest I forget, the first serving of our plate lunches were cold. All three of them. We sent them back and were served hotter food. read more

We frequently go here for breakfast and lunch, but probably not anymore. The food is usually good, but the atmosphere is not. Very dated decor, blinds on big windows are always closed. Hostess is stone faced, no greeting, just throws menus on a table when she seats you without a word. Had steak and eggs recently, which we have ordered before and it is usually good. Steak today had a big cord running through it and at least one third wasn't edible. Brought it to the waitresses attention and her comment was well, you never know what you are going to get when you open up a steak. Really? No offer to compensate, or replace, even though they know we come in frequently. Also they are very rigid with their menu, no substitutions!! If a sandwich comes with fries and you don't want them you will be charged anyway! Menu hasn't changed In years, just like decor. read more

Stopped in for the fish fry and left disappointed. Overall the place is okay as well as the service, nothing stands out. Fish fry is disappointing. Meals came out in a timely matter of, but the meals came out with just one piece of fish. Being an all you can eat it would be nice to have at least two pieces on the plate rather than asking for more and again receiving only one piece. Waiting around for your food to show back up one piece at a time is treating your customers poorly. I can only imagine that there is some gaming going on, e.g. hoping you don't order more, hoping you fill up on the bread rather than the fish. Hey folks your prices overall are on the high end, provide the protein. I am pretty disappointed overall. We have dined here often and we're surprised and disappointed. We will start looking for another place to put in the fish fry line up as this restaurant seems to want to short the customer. Unfortunately I will think twice about going back. read more

The Holiday Kitchen in Iron Mountain is a reliable breakfast destination. I make a point of stopping here most every time I'm in the U.P. The waitservice is usually attentive and pleasant, and the food is served fast and hot. I've never been through in the afternoon or evening, so I've never tried the lunch or dinner here. But the breakfasts are pretty good. I usually get the skillets with the cubed hash browns (especially delicious) and ham, egg, peppers and onions, all topped with a couple of slices of American cheese. It isn't gourmet by any means, it's standard breakfast food at a diner. If I'm not too hungry I'll go with two eggs over easy, always done up properly, with the hash browns and toast. I love the marble rye toast here. I'm not so big on the coffee - it comes off as weak and pretty flavorless. It's the only major drawback to the place. The clientele in the mornings is almost entirely made up of the elderly coffee klatch crowd, but there's nothing wrong with that. Last time I entertained myself with eavesdropping on two old friends arguing over the better fishing spots, then arguing over the "check" - not much since the two only had coffee. I would rate the place 3 to 3.5 stars because it is always good but not really great. I'm sure there's plenty of other places similar in the area, but this was the first place I ever stopped and for that reason I'll keep stopping. read more

My Mom and I were staying overnight in Iron Mountain for a business meeting that I was attending on 03/14/12. We were told by some locals that this was the best food in town and to try the cheese soup. We went in and ordered two bowls of soup to start then my mom ordered the "special" which was pot roast. The waitress asked what I wanted and I said we are eating large bowls of soup that is a lot of food, we are sharing the meal as the desserts all sounded good too. She told us that we were NOT ALLOWED to share meals. Excuse me? I am NOT allowed to eat off my Mom's plate?? What are you going to do come out and slap my hand? She proceeded to say it is just not allowed here and it is a strict policy and basically if I eat off her plate we are both charged. Mind you, this is NOT a buffet, I am purchasing a meal, which by the way can be purchased as takeout. So I said fine, bring us one meal, she will eat what she wants and we will take the rest to the hotel and I will eat later. She said fine and left to place the order. She brought our soups out and then a few minutes later the Manager comes to our table and proceeds to tell us that we are NOT allowed to share a meal, it is against policy. I told him that we only wanted one meal, it was too much food and being in a hotel we could not take leftovers. He told us in no uncertain terms that this was not allowed. I guess I could have just said forget it and leave but we really did not feel like finding somewhere else to eat. He then "offered" to make us two "lighter portion plates" which they offer on select items for $8.95 each instead of the one meal charge at $10.95. At that point I was angry and said "whatever, this is really ridiculous" we share meals all of the time whenever we go out as restaurant portions are just too big most of the time. He then knew I was angry and "offered" to allow the soup that we were currently eating to be the "salad" that comes with the meals normally. Again, we just said whatever. In the end, he was pretty dumb as the "as ordered" meal was $10.95 and $8 for the soups -- total $18.95 and the "new" price when we agreed to his small plates came to $17.90 because he swapped the salad for the soup that we had already been eating. Yes, he lost a dollar on the deal, so perhaps we came out ahead but had we not already been eating the soup and ready to walk we would have to pay the full for two meals. My anger is that I really can not see how a restaurant can dictate who is allowed to eat off of my plate, in a buffet, yes, the rule should always apply, but a purchased meal that I can order to go??? That is by far one of the strangest things I have EVER encountered and as I result I will NEVER eat there again. I am sorry I left the waitress a tip, I really can not believe that she even went back and TOLD the Manager that we only ordered one meal and that he bothered to come out and tell us NO. This is just so wrong in so many ways. It was such a waste of food as we could not finish what we had and of course then were too full to order the dessert, so he lost yet another $8-10 on us since we then could not eat dessert and of course the waitress lost out too as I am always a 20-25% tipper and I left only 15% which may be normal but for me is very low and an indication of poor service. read more
