The recently reopened Homeplace's country food was delicious this evening! Our favorites were the fried chicken, the pinto beans, mashed potatoes with gravy, and homemade biscuits with apple butter. Jayde was an excellent server and the views outside were beautiful. It helped to shorten our place in line by registering on "Toast" on the Homeplace website.

Went on a hike at McAfee Knob, came here to eat after the fact and its All you can eat for $15, how do you say no? YOU DON'T. With a group of four's stomach to fill, we chose fried chicken (the obvious choice) and roast beef as our main meats. The fried chicken is top tier compared to their other meats...I just know it. You know that church singer, Shirley Caesar, who sang "I got beans, greens, potatoes, tomatoes, chicken, turkeys, lambs, rams, you name ittt"? yeah. That's pretty much how we all felt when we got our sides. Bottom Line: they have done this consistently since the restaurant opened, they have mastered the art of frying chicken day in and day out. It's home cooking at a price you can't beat, seriously.

Came in with some friends after traversing McAfee Knob and we were very hungry hikers. We all decided to share 3 meats. I loved all of it, it is all home cooked. What else can I say? I very much enjoyed the country ham, and the fact that it was very salty. The fried chicken and roast beef were also cooked to perfection. The peas were very creamy, as was the fresh coleslaw. I also enjoyed the green beans. The lemonade was freshly made, you can clearly tell. Also, being a musician and dulcimer player, I loved the mountain dulcimer hanging on the wall!

One day after hiking everyone in my hiking group wanted to go to home place, so we went! Going into home place at first glance, it really did feel homey. The decoration and the way everyone treated each other made it feel like one big home. We sat down and got both lemonade and iced tea and decided to go with the three meat option. Then a ton of food started to come out. Our table which used to be empty, was now filled with fried chicken, roast beef, country ham, mashed potatoes, gravy, cole slaw, green beans, pinto beans, biscuits, and apple butter. I couldn't wait to try everything! I first started with the biscuits and apple butter. The biscuits were warm and buttery. While The apple butter was slightly sweet and had a nice body to spread on to the biscuits. Then, I went for the fried chicken which was cooked perfectly! Even the chicken breast (my least favorite part of the chicken) was moist. The roast beef was nice and tender. The country ham was a little too salty for me, but I could see how some folks would enjoy it. The mashed potatoes & gravy were nice and creamy. The cole slaw, green beans, and pinto beans were a great way to diffuse all the richness from the entire meal. After our meal, they had a dessert option as well. So, I got the vanilla ice cream with blue berry cobbler and it was an amazing finisher to the meal. Overall, I would definitely come back to home place. The service was incredible and the food tasted great. If you go, I highly recommend asking them what type of cobbler they have for the day. Since, warm cobbler with cold ice cream is a match made in heaven.

All this for $14/person! All you can eat!

**3.5 Stars** I feel like Home Place is more hyped up than it's supposed to be. It's definitely worth going to if you're in the area, but it's not mind-blowing or anything. It's not what i'd say is cheap or an amazingly good deal, especially since I'd only eat like 4-5 items out of the 9 offered. It's better to come right when they open, otherwise you'll have to wait a while to get in. On Saturdays, they open at 3pm! You get to choose 2 meats for $13/person and 3 meats for $14/person. All sides and drinks are included. The lemonade and iced tea are divine! Especially when combined to make an Arnold Palmer. Fried chicken was not so special. Ham was salty. But the roast beef is where it's at! We kept devouring platter after platter of these tender, moist slices of cow. Nice and peppery on the outside of the roast! Notable sides include the most amazing biscuits with apple/pumpkin butter, creamy mashed potatoes, and the best coleslaw i've ever had (nice texture and it's got a little kick to it). The other sides were just meh. And our meal ended on a nice peach cobbler with ice cream. It took us about 30 min of waiting in line to pay and get out. They really need another register...

I've been coming to this amazing southern restuarant at least once a semester since my freshman year of college! (It's been 6+ yrs). FOOD (5/5): I'm not a pork/beef person but my heart is 100% for their fried chicken and all the side dishes. My favorites are coleslaw and green beans. Their buttermilk biscuits go really well with their apple sauce -- amazing. I often have to stop myself from having more than one because I want to have enough room for the fried chicken. SERVICE (5/5): I've never had bad experience here. All the hostesses were really nice and welcoming. ATMOSPHERE (5/5): It's a buffet type of restaurant but whenever I eat here, it feels like I'm visiting my grandma's place when she's hosting a feast for strangers in her house. PRICE (4/5): the price went up and they're now charging for the cobbler, but that doesn't stop me from coming at least once a semester. $20 (tips included) is still a pretty good deal for good unlimited homemade food like this. COME IF: you need to come DON'T COME IF: you don't like fried food and southern style dishes and don't to pay $20 for a single meal that would keep you full for the rest of the day TIPS for short wait time -- I'm super hesitated to share this because I want to keep it to myself but I'm just going to share: *Go on Thursdays if you only care about the chicken and don't mind pulled pork *Sundays are usually less crowded. I went after church and I got the table right away. *If you have more than six ppl, break into smaller groups, and you would get the table faster

CHICKEN. CHICKEN. CHICKEN. I got to say this place is a must try if you're in the Blacksburg area. It is a little out of way, probably around a 40 minute drive, but it is WORTH IT. Every time I have been there, there would be a huge line of hungry people, and did I mention it was ALL YOU CAN EAT. The food is to die for, the comfort southern style food is amazing. Definitely get the fried chicken, they also come with a bunch of sides (mash potatoes, corn, coleslaw, etc). Lastly, their service is impeccable with the sweetest ladies that are very attentive. Pro tip: they offer sweet tea and lemonade and if you mix both of them, you can make yourself your own "Arnold Palmer".

They offer a nationally acclaimed menu that's been featured on NPR, Southern Living Magazine and even the ACC Network. They offer their own parking lot in the rear A huge rarity in a college area. It was clean and maintained. It was a treat to meet the owner in front of the tavern tending to landscaping needs. The historic homes facade presents beautifully. There is also outdoor seating. Our party of seven enjoyed a Sunday brunch while knowing little about the establishment. We were promptly greeted with a smile and menus and seated on the front room. Each of the four interior rooms has a fireplace and nostalgic photos adorn the walls. They also have a small bar with a focus on bourbon. The menu had one hit after another with authentic Southern cooking. The description calls it a "Traditional Regional Farmers Menu."No question the fried chicken is the hero. Five out of seven got the fried chicken. Others the chili and meatloaf. A plate of biscuits and cornbread were placed on the table after drinks placed. The history of the tavern on the menu is worthy of your time. The owner, originally from Blacksburg moved from California to restore for his own home. Later opening the restaurant. His goal to keep the structure original and true to purpose as a tavern. The owner himself comes from a family of tavern proprietors. I digress too long! The FOOD ALREADY!!! Well as you have probably already guessed it was impressive and exceeded my expectations. Every main, every side was a home run. From the mash potatoes & gravy to the macaroni & cheese, backed apples and green beans, to the rarely found succotash. All fabulous! Only starter was ham biscuits which were good. Mains of chili and meatloaf strong. But it was the fried chicken that brings local and tourist alike in the door. The chicken was cooked up to perfection and deliciously moist The breading was exceptional as well with no dripping grease and a medium crispy finish. The only desert ordered was the brownie & ice-cream. So yummy! The owner Daniel checked in on us before departing which made our experience even more special. The Blacksburg Tavern is a Southwestern Virginia gem that's a must to dine at. Checkout was efficient and prices affordable for large quality dishes. I will return later this year and hope to catch live music. Highly recommend.

I was caught off guard when my friend walked up the stairs to the house because from initial appearance, I wouldn't have thought this was the restaurant! Upon walking in, the host greeted us and told us his name was Dan and that he was the owner of the restaurant! It was really cool to see that the owner is truly passionate about his restaurant and will show up to put in the work, even during the later hours. In terms of the food, I went with the Hungry Hokie which was a mashed potato bowl with with bits of meatloaf and chicken, green beans, macaroni and cheese. It also came with a biscuit or cornbread, I opted in with the cornbread. The food was absolutely hearty and had pretty good flavor! The one wish that I had was that it came in a bigger portion as it didn't fully fill me up. If I was in town again, I'd definitely consider going back to try the other items on the menu!

After having been selected as number 4 of Yelp's Top 50 most prolific Elites of 2025, a year when I also was awarded the Yelp Triad Squad Photographer of the Year Award at their Yelpies 2025 Award Ceremony, an event that honored the highest-performing Yelp Elites, and where last year I was awarded the Yelp Triad Squad Yelper of the Year Award, I decided that this year, as an All-Star Yelp Elite, I not only wanted to be the first to discover new restaurants and bring them to the attention of the public, but also to return to those special ones, that have made a difference in my life and highlight them, for the benefit of the public, so they too can have an opportunity to appreciate the qualities of a one-of-a-kind fine dining experience. And Bernard's Gastropub & Eatery in Downtown Roanoke, is a perfect example. Bernard's was born out of the love of two culinary aficionados turned professionals that in someway have managed to create a restaurant with an environment that transmits this intimate love to the hearts of their customers through the attention to detail in its extraordinary customer service and amazing culinary masterpieces. Today, I felt like dining at this restaurant, which I admire for its consistency in always far exceeding my high expectations of what a fine-dining restaurant should be all about. Not knowing if they would have a table for me at this late time on a Saturday early evening, I drove in my pearl white Lexus to the nearest private parking lot and gave them a call to inquire as if they could give me a reservation for the next ten minutes. A gentleman, who later I found out was named Matthew, and would be my server, answered the phone with a very polite and welcoming voice; answering my question of what was the special dish of the day and to come on down, that my reservation was assured. As soon as I arrived to the small, very elegant foyer in front of the Host's station, he came out to greet me and instantly recognized who I was. My only request was that he give me a low table because at my age seating at a high table was a bit uncomfortable. He went back to see what he could find and ended setting me up with what I consider one of the best tables of the house, and I was so appreciative of his last minute accommodation. The menu was already setup on my table. He poured water from a special bottle into my water glass and asked if I wanted something else to drink. I asked for a Mocktail and since he also was a bartender, he prepared me one of the best mocktails I've ever had. To dine, I started out with their Mussels Carbonara appetizer, which came in a bacon parmesan cream sauce that was simply amazing, and served with toast points. As my main entrée I had the Dinner Special of the Night, the Seafood Trio. It had a delicious, giant size crab cake in the middle, scallops, and shrimps, with parmesan risotto sautéed heirloom tomato, spinach, and nice size asparagus, with a burre blanc sauce. I invite you to view my photographs accompanying this review to get a better sense of the high-quality of their food and magnificent ambiance of the place. Everything was so delicious that only one word could ever describe them: priceless! For dessert I had their very famous Butterscotch Banana Pudding, which the chef makes at the moment ordered. It looked spectacular and tasted amazingly delicious: a culinary work of art. What a great way for the Gran Finale of an extraordinary dining experience!

It highly went beyond the highest of my expectations, and delivered an extraordinary dining experience. After making an appointment for five o'clock and mentioning that I would be celebrating my birthday there on that day, I wondered how it would be, for everytime I have dined there, their attention to detail has been superb, and their cuisine has been exquisite. The day finally arrived and I was standing by the door at five minutes to the hour. Inside I could see through their large front windows the movement of all the staff getting ready for the opening of the restaurant. At exactly five o'clock, the hostess approached and opened the door for me to enter. She warmly greeted me and apologized for not being able to give me the table I requested because they needed it to unite with other tables for a large group they would be having. But they had prepared another one in front of the open kitchen for me, where I would be able to observe the Chef and other cooks preparing my food. It was definitely to my satisfaction, and when she took me there I was very impressed with the small detail on the table of a Happy Birthday card from the restaurant signed by everyone there and suspended by a little stand. Things like that are priceless in my eyes. Shortly afterwards, my friendly and efficient server Ivy, came by, wished me a Happy Birthday and took my order. To drink I had my favorite Mocktail there, the Butterfly Kisses. As appetizer I ordered the Oyster Wraps. And for my main entrée, the Hanger Steak, my favorite item in their menu and that of all the other restaurants around the area. My server did an excellent job of bringing out my ordered items in a well-paced manner. I noticed the small but significant detail that the chef had of serving me a slightly larger amount of Hanger Steak than the usual, and this meant more to me than any of the other complimentary desserts which are given in most other restaurants on your birthday. The Hanger Steak was so delicious. I invite you to view my photographs accompanying this review to get a better sense of the place and the high-quality of their food. Also to read my former review where I explain what a Hanger Steak is all about. For the Grand Finale of my Birthday meal I had their Panna Cotta dessert deliver with a burning birthday candle on top, another wonderful detail that many restaurants leave out now-a-days yet is so meaningful to many of us. This was truly a memorable dining experience. One that I will always remember and cherish dearly.

My friend and I walked in at 9 o'clock EXACTLY on a Thursday night to have a drink. The sign on the door said they were open until 10:00. There were 4 or 5 tables seated, enjoying dinner and cocktails. 5 or 6 people at the bar. There was no one to start with at the actual hostess stand and servers saw us standing at the door but did not approach us even though there was an hour left on their operating time. So we walked directly to the bar and sat down. We had just eaten at Fork in the Alley so all we wanted was one drink and we figured an hour was plenty of time to get that done. The first thing the bartender said to us was "The kitchen is closed." Not "hello" or "Hey what can I get you?" but the kitchen is closed. I said "oh I'm sorry I thought you closed at 10:00." He said "well, that's up for debate we were actually discussing that right now. We're basically closed but you can have a drink because it's not like the rest of these people are going anywhere." What do you mean that's up for discussion? Your hours say you're open till 10 o'clock, it's 9 o'clock I have an hour to eat and have drinks! The other bartender, or perhaps he was only a bar back, gave us a very disapproving look. I get it, I work in the food service industry. I'm a server at a 4 diamond restaurant, and I hate when people walk in minutes before we close and want to sit down. But if we post that we're open until 10 and you walk in at 9:45 I'm going to serve you and treat you like anyone else that walked in at 6:00 because it's your tips that pay my bills and put food on my table. It's definitely not the hourly wage I get from my employer! And as a server I never walk into a restaurant with less than 30 minutes to close. And it's more like an hour if I'm looking to eat a meal. I know you want to go home. When it's the end of the night and I'm at work, so do I! But there's an hour left and I wanted one drink. That's it! We continued to get disappointed looks from a few other employees even though we weren't the last people in the place. I told my friend (it's 9:45 at this point) that we obviously need to go since servers are standing around looking at us like we've got the plague. We paid our bill and promptly left. Two couples still at the bar. It's 9:59 right now as I'm writing this at home (you're still technically open btw) but I left feeling like I had stayed hours past your closing time. It's a real shame because we really enjoyed our drinks! They were super yummy! And I'm always getting asked by guests where's a good place for a late night cocktail and I used to recommend The River and Rail right along with Lucky's because we had a shuttle that would take guests out, but after tonight I won't be doing that anymore. Because there's nothing worse than feeling unwelcome at a restaurant that is still open.
