I love the consistency with food and drink quality of this place. We come here at least twice a year because we live in Orlando. The Honu has a tiki bar as well which is outdoors. I think there's live music on the weekends. We usually get the stacker one with khalua pork and one with ahí tuna. It's simply delicious. I've been here a few times to the tiki bar out back but I had never actually been inside. How absolutely cute and adorable! The inside is a perfect romantic date place. The food is good and they have decent vegan and GF options. My salad was good BUT the chicken was pretty bland and it had minimal greens. It was a salad after all, and it had very very little in the way of the "lettuce mix" department. Charging 2.00 for an extra 2 ounce side of salad dressing is beyond. At least have your servers make your patrons aware of this overpriced cost. .75-1.00 seems standard these days but 2.00. C'mon! First off I would like to give them credit where its due, the atmosphere is fantastic, they have great entertainment and the service is on point! Our server was friendly, helpful, fast and just lovely all around. I did not try the drinks but drinks + entertainment + beautiful atmosphere might be a win. Now for the bad, my husband and I noticed the ingredients not being quality right off the bat. My husband being a chef, uses only quality ingredients and from the rice to tortias, the quality seriously lacked. Also, this did not feel like authentic Polynesian food at all! We started with the musubi, which we were pretty excited about only to be seriously dissapointed. All you taste is sticky mushy rice, with the fishy flavor of the seaweed and none of the actual spam! My reason for the review is over our experience with the owner, Kim. We spent at least $400 and had one single issue with a meal which we thought we had replaced with another meal, but they intended to charge us for both. Kim was extremely rude and accused the member of our party of eating all the meat in a salad he returned. He had only taken one bite. The way she talked to our party was so condescending, and at the end, in the snarkiest way possible, she said, "I'll be so happy to take this off for you." Then she stomped off angrily. We were baffled by how Kim handled the situation. We spent hundreds, tipped well, were extremely polite...even apologetic for the inconvenience. Who runs a business like this?? I was eyeing this spot before I came into town but it didn't make my final itinerary. Funny enough, we saw the lights and heard the music while passing and ended up here anyways. I ordered the pork sliders appetizer and my boyfriend got the nachos. Pork sliders- 9/10 very good pork. I also liked all the different ways they came Nachos- 6/10. They are not traditional. They had carrots, zucchini, snap peas on them and some of the chips at the bottom were very soggy. Our server was nice and the tiki drink menu is extensive. I took my friend here for her birthday after seeing a clip about them on the news... it was so not good unfortunately :(. The rice was wayyy over cooked- like mashed potato rice - I was shocked that this was the case at a place with rice accompanying most of their dishes! The soup- coconut lime- flavors were way off , under seasoned and a clump of overcooked mashed potato rice in the middle - yuck! My mock tail- pomegranate mojito was also underwhelming- didn't have that fresh pop of flavor you expect with mojitos. The staff was not very friendly or attentive... The only good things were the tuna was definitely fresh and they have outdoor seating (but plastic picnic tables in the front- so not great.) If you want the "short review" version - Food is very "meh"... drinks are mostly water... and you'll get nickel & dime'd to death. Here's the deets... First, I've tried REALLY hard to like this place because it's a great concept and the ambiance has a funky vibe. Been there 5 times and each time, we've been really disappointed for several reasons. Last night, we attended a party there and were hoping things would be different. It ended up being the final straw... For the food and drinks... While the food has been mediocre - to inedible each time we've dined here (yesterday's "slaw of the day" was very bitter, with nothing to balance out the wasabi taste), their tropical drinks (the pride of their drink menu) are loaded with ice - and to make them worse, they use small "pellet ice" that melts what seems like 10 times as fast as regular ice and after your first couple of sips, your drink tastes like flavored water. But it's the overall "business" of Honu's service that's been an even bigger turn-off, and the reason we'll never go back... After being disappointed with their main dishes each time before, I felt like we had a good gameplan for ordering at the party. For an appetizer, you really can't screw up "chips & salsa" and their "trio app" was delicious - especially their pineapple salsa. The problem? There were only enough chips for about 2/3 of the appetizer. We asked for - and received - more chips to finish the apps. When the bill finally came, we discovered we were charged $4.50 for the small basket of extra chips. These are STORE BOUGHT chips and it really appeared that the small first serving was a decoy for having to add on another basket at a ridiculous price. I can go to any Mexican restaurant and get even better chips refilled over and over for free. For the main dish, a few of us tried to play it safe and ordered the fish sandwich. It came out with barely any of their Citrus Jalapeno Aioli on it, so we asked for a side of it... which is when we were told it would cost an extra $2! Flipping over the bun to show our server that there was barely any on what was served, we were given the side of sauce for free (although the first side that came out was the wrong sauce, so we had to wait even longer for the replacement before being able to begin eating our meal). The final let-down of the night was when the bill came and we discovered that we were charged $1 more for a few of our drinks than what they were advertised for on their menu. When we pointed it out to the server, she said that "We just haven't updated our menus yet to reflect the new price... but I'll adjust the bill for you." Huh? You change your actual drink price BEFORE you change the price you're showing on the menus? Overall, it almost seems like it's their BUSINESS PLAN to serve you - drinks you have to chug down before they turn to water... dishes that are lacking enough key ingredients to make your meal more enjoyable (or even finish it)... and then charge you through the nose for fixing it... and then see who notices the extra charges on the bill. Nope. This was the very LAST time we're dining there. Ever. P.S. - Oh... and if you ignore my advice and decide to give Honu a try, bring some bug spray. It's common knowledge of those who frequent here that you're gonna get eaten alive in the back dining area! read more

The Honu is an amazing restaurant in downtown Dunedin. They serve island-style dishes but very creative. Everything was so nice and fresh. They have a front patio, indoor dining rooms and the coolest "Polynesian tiki bar" and tables in the back. They frequently have live music as well. We started with the Poke Trio with ahi poke, shrimp poke & lomi lomi salmon. I had the Hoisin salmon with black rice and my friend had the fire dancing plate, a little spicy but so delicious. They have wonderful craft cocktails inspired by Polynesia as well as a local craft beer list and wines. They have expanded the parking so now have a lot in the back and there's nearby street parking. We enjoyed dinner in the Tiki Bar complete with live music. The atmosphere is casual and comfortable. Our seating was close to the stage which made dinner conversation a bit difficult. If I could have changed something about the dining experience a lower speaker volume would be it. The staff was friendly and attentive. The prices were average range. The menu had both Hawaiian and traditional Americana offerings as well as a full bar selection. So I come into town to visit my best friend and we get hungry. I fire up the ol' Yelp app and look for nearby great eats. I find this place, and we come here after a morning of walking around Downtown Dunedin, which is absolutely beautiful, by the way. Go check out the marina to see freaking manatees. The outdoor seating is absolutely incredible. There's a little fenced in area with four tables right in front of the singing stage. There was a live singer this day, and she was good. We sat at one of the two picnic tables outside of the little fenced in area, you'll see in the pictures, which was fine, but there really is a lot more space out there for more seating, which would be idea for the live music they have so frequently. The inside it pretty kool, too. The restaurant is converted from an old house, and it feels like it, too, which makes the bar with seats an interesting sight to behold. As kool as the inside is, it's a waste when there's music going on. The bathrooms were nice, too. They're both turtle themed. I like turtles. Check the pics. On to the important stuff. Our waitress was super nice. They charge for refills on soda, because you get cans of it, so beware. We started out with the Veggie Nachos (seasonal veggies, cheddar/jack cheese, salsa, pepper pico & cilantro lime sauce) and the Musubi (sauteed Spam (yes we said SPAM) & sushi rice wrapped in seafood). The nachos were good. They spent a little too much time in the heat and they could have been assembled better. There were too many chips on the bottom with no toppings leftover. And the musubi was a lot of fun! It was delicious and a good use of Spam, but for the price, I would expect there to be two of these things on the plate. They'd still make a profit. For our entrees we got the Huli Huli Chicken (on Hawaiian roll, shredded chicken, Spanish onion, romaine lettuce, tomato & jalapeno citrus aioli) and the Loco Moco (spinach, tomato, sushi rice, turkey burger, poached egg, topped with spinach and garlic cream sauce). My Loco Moco was pretty good. The textures were all ok. I loved the yolk running all over everything. But the flavor was just so bland. I feel like nothing was seasoned and the giant bed of spinach was really unnecessary. Put it in bowl, add some crunch on top. This dish is almost there. Just needs a little help. The best thing I had was my girlfriend's Huli Huli Chicken. The Hawaiian roll was just what you're thinking it is, delicious and soft, but it holds up well in this mess of a sandwich. Lots of acid and crunch are there, and the jalapeno citrus aioli was heaven sent. Everything blended together to make some sweet, spicy shredded up chicken. So good. Overall, I liked this place just fine. I think some of the technique in the kitchen could be spruced up a bit, but I didn't not enjoy my experience here. I'd come back. read more

We saw this place on Charley's World in December and being avid Hawaii fans (been there 9 times) we decided to go. We have eaten Hawaiian food many times so we knew what to expect. It was a big let down. We sat outside and ambience was 5 stars. Definite Hawaiian vibes with a ukulele singer after 6pm. The menu was missing some iconic Hawaiian foods. No Loco Moco. Anyway we ordered 3 dishes. Food in Hawaii is not heavily seasoned, but this was just blah. When you put Fire in a menu title- you expect some flavor. Nope. No seasonings on the table to help the blah. If a dish is to be hot temperature, make sure it is served hot. All 3 dish proteins were NOT EVEN LUKE WARM. The rice was, but was an overcooked mushy clump of scooped rice. Everything on top was cold. Cold after just coming a very short walk from the kitcken. Epic fail. Even 3 jalapeno slices of garnish lacked heat. Add to the fact it was flavorless. Disappointing. The Kahlua pork was smoky and dry, as was the huli huli chicken, which could have used more sauce on it. My husband would have asked for more sauce and even paid for more. But the server never came back at all. Everything sat on balls of clumpy white rice. My 'citrus' chicken and shrimp lacked citrus flavor and was screaming for some salt or seasoning. Fire was in the title but it was not hot-temp or taste. My daughter's grilled chicken was ok, but had flavoring from the slaw. The macaroni salad tasted like nothing but bland noodles. As a chef, you have to season food. As previous reviews state - the food is awful. Service? She came twice to take our order - once after we had just sat down and had about 30 seconds to see the menu. It was very poor service after that. After we ordered, our waitress disappeared and we ended up getting another server after waiting almost 30 minutes for our check. The prices are steep for the food you get and quality but we expected that for the atmosphere. Clearly their food cost is under 20%. It should be 30% for entrees. This was a 1 and done since we traveled 1 hr 15 minutes to get there. This would be fun for drinks ($13-15 each) but skip the food. read more

I went to Honu tonight with my wife and a dear friend. We sat out back and enjoyed the traditional Hawaiian music and singing. Other than each other's company the music was the only thing we enjoyed. The service was friendly and prompt. The food was awful. My dish was white rice and a few vegetables with some wasabi cole slaw. Actually the cole slaw made the dish edible. The rice and vegetables had NO seasoning. NONE. My wife's dish was similarly bad and bland, with four shrimp. She too was lucky enough to get the cole slaw. Our friend had an average green salad with a little chicken and bacon. I don't know how this restaurant ever got four stars from anyone. Perhaps it was an off night. I doubt it. We did not order an app as we have read in other reviews that their portions are pretty large. I had the fire dance plate with extra jalapeños and our server notified me if I like spicy that they have a pele sauce that is very spicy and delicious, so I order that as well. My husband had the panilolo sandwich, he said it was delicious. There is a saying, "Not all who wander are lost." Well, i got lost wandering around Dunedin for a work thing and stumbled on this place, as i was drawn to the decor. I had no time to really look at everything, so after i did my thing for work, i came right back, not wanting to brave the drive back hungry, and determined to check them out. It was also a gloomy, rainy day, and i was a little irritated that i had to come out this way for work. Luckily, i was able to turn my negative into something positive by using that opportunity to discover a new place! The interior is beautiful, making you feel like you are in a luau with their Tiki statues and decor. With the soft lighting and the ambiance its easy to forget youre in Florida in the rain and not in Hawaii. I was the only customer there, and the owner was training new staff, so I got alot of attention. They gave me time to peruse the menu before making a selection. I did notice they had alot of good sounding cocktails and treats, but I wasnt planning on drinking or splurging, so i looked at the healthier options, which thankfully they had alot of. They had salad, but as usual, I wasnt in the mood for it so i got the Dos Tacos with Ahi Poke and a shot of coleslaw. It was a good choice, as it really hit the spot after a stressful day that felt wasted, but my mood quickly changed. The tacos were generously filled and had ample amounts of Ahi Poke that went great with the Asian slaw. On top of Ahi, there was alot of other stuff in the tacos like some feta, some crisp tasty veggies. The tacos came out bigger than i had expected, so i was fully satiated by the time i was done with the meal. The nice young lady who was my server was very attentive and checked on me frequently to make sure I didnt need anything else. Love supporting a small business, and I love that they support other small businesses and good causes in the area. I went for dine out for life because I've always wanted to check them out and this was a great excuse to do it.
