I took her advice and ordered the 3 Dots and a Dash, and yeah, that cocktail is a little vacation in a glass. Balanced, boozy, just sweet enough, and it didn't taste like a syrup bomb. Such a great place! We came just for the Sippin' Santa pop up bar for Christmas and were not disappointed a bit. The restaurant is COMPLETELY Christmas-ified and wonderful! We sat in the Tiki Bar area in the back for our dinner. First we ordered some drinks. The Kris Kringle Colada and the Sippin' Santa. Very tasty strong, and served in super cute cups as you can see in my pictures. We ordered kalua pork nachos to go with this. Very unusual plate of nachos. They said this is how Hawaiians make them - not sure about that - they had a ton of veggies on them which tbh we kind of picked around. I like veggies as much as the next person but not sure about them on nachos. However, the pork pork and sauces on the chips were delicious and very spicy! Definitely a unique flavor, not your typical nachos. For my entree I got the Fire Dancing Plate which comes with shredded chicken and shrimp on top of rice which I absolutely loved. Stopped in for lunch at this restaurant. The server (Jacob) is on top of his game. Greeted us promptly and made recommendations that were absolutely on point. Had a Ahi Tuna Poke for an app. The entree was equally as delicious. He recommended the Tetaki seared tuna salad with a wasabi aioli. We also had a vegan salad with a blueberry orange dressing that was delicious. The atmosphere is a very chill vibe which brings you right to the Hawaiian Islands. If you're looking for a cool place to stop in for an island getaway without the flights from Florida then this is definitely a must in downtown Dunedin. We enjoyed our visit to this funky restaurant that is a bit off of main street in downtown Dunedin. They have a small parking lot to the right where we luckily found a spot. The decorations inside are very numerous and unique with different colors, carvings, a skeleton wearing a Hawaiian shirt, a guest book and much more! Take some time and walk around the multiple rooms and explore! Outside in the back is a neat tiki bar that had a real live ukulele Hawaiian entertainer! Many people were outside enjoying the music, atmosphere and drinks. The food is a combination of pure authentic Hawaiian with some non-standard creative dishes. The mixed plate with kalua pork and chicken was definitely tasty as were my pork sliders and meatballs. We got everything to go and had fun eating leftovers for a few days. I also liked the Kona coffee brownie for dessert. It's dense, tasty and generous. I still have more to consume three days later! With the lush vegetation, vintage Polynesian-inspired decor, the tropical menu and the staff's warm and friendly vibe, it truly felt like we were far away on vacation... and that was before we started sampling the inventive craft cocktails. Opened in 2016, the restaurant is in a little green house, in downtown Dunedin, with a patio out front and the tiki bar out back. Inside, there's a lobby/front room area with a deep mid-century Polynesian vibe and a 20-seat private dining room. Out back, there's a large bar area, separate long counter seating and several tables with umbrellas. We were seated right away... and the four-legged member of our party was happily fawned over. They brought water to our good boy several times and there's even a dog menu! The rest of us ordered chicken sliders, a burger, one of the stacks and the coconut lime soup. Everyone loved everything! We also thoroughly enjoyed tropical drinks and a couple of champagne flights. They didn't mind us lingering three hours at the table. What a fun, chill and unique afternoon! I can't wait to go back and keep working my way through both the food and extensive drink menus... and take in some live music. (there's a little stage in the tiki bar area) There's parking available along nearby streets plus a small lot. Service was warm, friendly and easy-going and everything was just so comfy. This was a very bad and disappointing experience. The food was lackluster and uninspired. I was charged $3.50 for en extra fried egg and $2 for a cup of extra steak sauce that arrived half way through my meal. I wasn't told about the up-charge and frankly the sauce tasted like A1. My friends and I met here on a Saturday for lunch. This is a great little off the beaten path local spot. There is tons of seating outside (in the front and in the back) and some inside, although we didn't venture inside except to use the restrooms. The seating out back, along with the bar out back, is amazing. There is a ton of seating, lots of shade and a little stage for live music, however we were not there when there was live music. The food was really good. We ordered the meatballs for the table because you can't go wrong with meatballs and they were delicious. The hubs had a burger and fries and I had the pork stack. I will say that I expected mine to be more flavorful. It was a little bland for my tastes. The drinks were the star here. I had two, Pele's Revenge and the Spicy Coconut Lime Colada. Both of them were right up my alley. Service was great, there when we needed and also ok to let us sit and hang out without much interruption. Also, this is a pet friendly place. I love The Honu. It's the perfect Hawaiian vibe and one can't not be happy here. They have amazing food and drinks and once you step in the door once you are their automatic friend and family! We have been here a few times and even came when they first opened. They have events, music and luau's which are a blast. I can't wait for the next one next year for their five anniversary. So... we were totally excited to check this place out since it kept popping up on my feed. It keeps showing how amazing the backyard is and my kids were excited to 'go back to Hawaii' in Florida. When we got there we found out that the backyard is a bar and only open to adults. Fail, my son was so upset, he was 5 at the time. He actually told the waitress that the whole reason we came was to sit in the patio. So we were taken to the front of the restaurant and sat in that area that has about 4 tables. It's absolutely adorable inside. The drinks are killer and it's a perfect spot for a pre-drink or night cap. The place has a real tropical feel, you are greeted warmly as soon as you step foot in. The food and drinks are great, I've had everything from their spam musubi to their green curry, and have never been disappointed in a drink. I came here for the first time on a Friday night with a girlfriend. The restaurant was pretty busy, but spacious. There was no wait and we were immediately sat. There was live Hawaiian music playing and the ambiance is gives this restaurant personality and charm. We enjoyed their commitment to the theme. The service was friendly and prompt. The server was pleasant and knowledgeable about the menu. We noticed they had an extensive cocktail menu and plenty of rum options. Instead we opted for mock tails. I had their pain killer and it was DELICIOUS! The tiki mug was so cute and they sell them! The food itself is fresh and yummy. I had the fire plate which was sweet and spicy chicken and shrimp over sushi rice with pineapple, red onions, jalapeño, and bell peppers. This plate was delicious. The perfect balance of sweet and spice. I will note that this restaurant is a bit on the pricier side. My dish was $22 and was on the smaller side. I was expecting larger portions considering the prices but the flavor made up for it. Next time I'd opt to getting an appetizer or dessert with my entree. After walking around downtown Dunedin after dinner I noticed I was still a little hungry. My girlfriend ordered their peanut chicken curry plate and she enjoyed it! She said the curry sauce was incredibly creamy but she mentioned her portion size being small as well. Overall, I would come back. As I mentioned, I would order a bit more or come for lunch. The food is good and they have decent vegan and GF options. My salad was good BUT the chicken was pretty bland and it had minimal greens. It was a salad after all, and it had very very little in the way of the "lettuce mix" department. Charging 2.00 for an extra 2 ounce side of salad dressing is beyond. At least have your servers make your patrons aware of this overpriced cost. .75-1.00 seems standard these days but 2.00. C'mon! I gave HONU 5 stars because I like the place, vibe, and support my local community but owners, you can do a little better in the salad department. read more

My reason for the review is over our experience with the owner, Kim. We spent at least $400 and had one single issue with a meal which we thought we had replaced with another meal, but they intended to charge us for both. Kim was extremely rude and accused the member of our party of eating all the meat in a salad he returned. He had only taken one bite. The way she talked to our party was so condescending, and at the end, in the snarkiest way possible, she said, "I'll be so happy to take this off for you." Then she stomped off angrily. We were baffled by how Kim handled the situation. We spent hundreds, tipped well, were extremely polite...even apologetic for the inconvenience. Who runs a business like this?? If you want the "short review" version - Food is very "meh"... drinks are mostly water... and you'll get nickel & dime'd to death. Here's the deets... First, I've tried REALLY hard to like this place because it's a great concept and the ambiance has a funky vibe. Been there 5 times and each time, we've been really disappointed for several reasons. Last night, we attended a party there and were hoping things would be different. It ended up being the final straw... For the food and drinks... While the food has been mediocre - to inedible each time we've dined here (yesterday's "slaw of the day" was very bitter, with nothing to balance out the wasabi taste), their tropical drinks (the pride of their drink menu) are loaded with ice - and to make them worse, they use small "pellet ice" that melts what seems like 10 times as fast as regular ice and after your first couple of sips, your drink tastes like flavored water. But it's the overall "business" of Honu's service that's been an even bigger turn-off, and the reason we'll never go back... After being disappointed with their main dishes each time before, I felt like we had a good gameplan for ordering at the party. For an appetizer, you really can't screw up "chips & salsa" and their "trio app" was delicious - especially their pineapple salsa. The problem? There were only enough chips for about 2/3 of the appetizer. We asked for - and received - more chips to finish the apps. When the bill finally came, we discovered we were charged $4.50 for the small basket of extra chips. These are STORE BOUGHT chips and it really appeared that the small first serving was a decoy for having to add on another basket at a ridiculous price. I can go to any Mexican restaurant and get even better chips refilled over and over for free. For the main dish, a few of us tried to play it safe and ordered the fish sandwich. It came out with barely any of their Citrus Jalapeno Aioli on it, so we asked for a side of it... which is when we were told it would cost an extra $2! Flipping over the bun to show our server that there was barely any on what was served, we were given the side of sauce for free (although the first side that came out was the wrong sauce, so we had to wait even longer for the replacement before being able to begin eating our meal). The final let-down of the night was when the bill came and we discovered that we were charged $1 more for a few of our drinks than what they were advertised for on their menu. When we pointed it out to the server, she said that "We just haven't updated our menus yet to reflect the new price... but I'll adjust the bill for you." Huh? You change your actual drink price BEFORE you change the price you're showing on the menus? Overall, it almost seems like it's their BUSINESS PLAN to serve you - drinks you have to chug down before they turn to water... dishes that are lacking enough key ingredients to make your meal more enjoyable (or even finish it)... and then charge you through the nose for fixing it... and then see who notices the extra charges on the bill. Nope. This was the very LAST time we're dining there. Ever. P.S. - Oh... and if you ignore my advice and decide to give Honu a try, bring some bug spray. It's common knowledge of those who frequent here that you're gonna get eaten alive in the back dining area! read more

First off I would like to give them credit where its due, the atmosphere is fantastic, they have great entertainment and the service is on point! Our server was friendly, helpful, fast and just lovely all around. I did not try the drinks but drinks + entertainment + beautiful atmosphere might be a win. Now for the bad, my husband and I noticed the ingredients not being quality right off the bat. My husband being a chef, uses only quality ingredients and from the rice to tortias, the quality seriously lacked. Also, this did not feel like authentic Polynesian food at all! We started with the musubi, which we were pretty excited about only to be seriously dissapointed. All you taste is sticky mushy rice, with the fishy flavor of the seaweed and none of the actual spam!
