Not only do I know these owners personally for years, they have been carrying my homemade dog treats (Lucy Snacks) as well, since opening their doors. They, and also the entire staff are extreme pet lovers, and are welcoming and ready to answer any and all your questions, big or small. Whether I am there to drop off more treats to sell or purchase supplies for my dogs, I'm always asked "How are the dogs doing?" :) I have an elderly Lab with health issues and went from prescription only food to food I can purchase there at the store, which has kept my girl in good shape for 4 plus years. I used to be a regular customer, but they've lost me now. One of the sales clerks recommended a K9 tooth brush and k9 toothpaste they sell for my dog. He assured me they work well. I bought it and tried it on my dog, but the toothpaste smelled rancid and the toothbrush wouldn't even fit on my dog's teeth. (Medium size female yellow lab.). When I tried to return it (a lousy 10 bucks plus tax) the manager informed me they don't take anything back except for open dog food, (because they can get a credit for that.) I was shocked that a seemingly reputable small business wouldn't cater better to their customers. That's not even the worst part. My complaint is that I asked for the owner to call me to discuss the situation but I never received a callback. I stopped back five days later, and the manager just reiterated that she spoke with the owner and they weren't going to take back the inferior products. This store has always been a little overpriced, but for the most part it has had some friendly clerks. I even let them use my dog's pictures in some of their ads a couple of years ago when they sold a Gasparilla Bandanna. But now that I now know they won't stand behind any of their products and they won't give any refunds under any circumstances, I can't support them anymore. I will shop at places like Amazon, Pet Smart or the like who takes returns. Be Aware! read more

The owners of this store are quite nice, as well as the store. It's located in an area where there is not much around so they may be looked over. They have great supplies for your pet. Yesterday was my first visit and all I can say is...IMPRESSIVE! My husband and I care for a large colony of ferel cats (catch/release/feed) and have 21 inside and we were looking for a new pet store. Well we do not have to look any further! The staff were welcoming, knowledgeable and kind and most importantly for us the pricing is very comparable to the big box stores especially with the manufacturer couponing, discounts, etc. All I can say is I am so grateful to have found your place and The Hound's Meow has gained new customers for life! I regularly visit The Hound's Meow to stock up on treats and other toys/supplies. The size is small compared to some chain stores but that's to be expected in a small business - despite the size the selection of items doesn't suffer and there is more then enough treats/toys/food to be satisfied. All of the employee's that I've ever encountered have been very friendly and willing to help. I've even received my fair share of free samples while shopping which both my dog and I love! Honestly there really doesn't seem to be a down side to the store outside of the fact that I seem to have the bad luck to almost always miss discount days! I do wish they would remove their small selection of prong/choke collars from the store but at least they offer very little aversive tools compared to many other retailers. read more

I grew up in a very small town in Massachusetts and since moving to Florida I felt like I was really missing the community feeling you get from a small town. All the store owners in my old town knew you and your kids by name and always made you feel special. I haven't found too many shops like this since moving but I can honestly say the hounds meow is one of these places. The store is owned by a husband and wife who bring their 2 dogs to work with them and they are 2 of the nicest people i have met. Always willing to answer all of my crazy questions and even steered me away from a more expensive product to a higher quality lower cost one. We recently added a new puppy to our family and she was having terrible stomach problems. We spent a ton of money at the vet trying to figure out the issue. We had almost lost hope when we stopped into the hounds meow and the owners suggested we tried changing the food to one that did not contain chicken. Apparently a small percentage of dogs can be allergic to chicken. We took their advice and changed to a lamb and seafood based diet and sure enough no more stomach problems!! I can't thank the owners enough for helping and 100% recommend their store to anyone who will listen. read more

I've enjoyed shopping at Hound's Meow since the couple opened their shop. It's the most enjoyable atmosphere; it is clear the owners take pride in their work and offer exemplary customer service. I know of no other shop, let alone pet store, where the customer service is as outstanding. Additionally, the pet supplies they offer stand far above the local competition's offerings. Rather than going to big chains like Petsmart or Petco, I love supporting local businesses like this place! For being small they have a BUNCH of a variety of various things. From toys, to food, treats, and etc. They also carry Puppia harnesses, high quality dog food (at an awesome price), and food for raw diets for dogs if anyone is interested in such since most big chains don't carry those things. Stopped here after seeing it online while looking for our new dog's collar. We had been to many of the national stores and received no help on trying to fit the collar on a small dog (yorkie). As soon as we walked in this store the young lady showed us to the collars and then took the time to sit on the floor with our dog and try on and adjust several different collars until we found one that worked. By far my favorite pet store in Tampa now. They also have a good selection of many items. Don't think you are walking into a national store. They don't have racks of each item but they do have plenty of items I hadn't seen in the other stores too. Prices are comparable but I would have paid more for the service. Great store! I began going here about a year ago. Mainly, I wanted to support local business and provide my cats with the best nutritional options. Hounds meow has a great selection of foods for my 3 cats. Because a good diet for my pets is important to me, I read all of the labels thoroughly. They carry the foods that I have researched and decided are the best for my pets. I am very disappointed. I shopped at this store frequently as I have two JRT's and was always very pleased. I also enjoyed knowing that I was helping a local business and not shopping at a big box store. Unfortunately, I purchased a harness and leash set for my little girl JRT on 12/18/15 for Christmas, and after Christmas realized it was too small. My father passed away on 1/3/16 and I had to go NY for his funeral. I was a bit out of sorts after his death and did not think of exchanging the harness which still had all tags on it etc, until 1/30/16 ( 2 weeks past the 30 day return policy) and was informed by the cashier she could not accommodate me, but she would have the owner call me on Monday (2/1/16). I explained to the gentleman who called me the situation and that I would just like to exchange for the correct size..... he said he could not do this since people could" hold on to things for 6 months" and then try to exchange. I again explained I was only 2 weeks out of the return policy and had a death in the family... he again refused to accept the exchange. I let him know that this was unfortunate since I did enjoy shopping there, but I will not frequent this store any longer. I guess I thought if you shopped local, there would be a bit of compassion and understanding when it came to "store policy". As of right now I cannot see the benefit of shopping locally and spending a bit extra. I will be going to the "big box store"s going forward. very disappointed. read more

I love this place! They are always so helpful and friendly. Whenever I bring my Great Dane in there they always give him a treat and even help me carry his huge bags of dog food out to my car. They carry a great variety of premium dog and cat foods (including Fromm which I could never find big bags of) and on top of that it's independent. I love shopping local here! read more

BUYER BEWARE - - - We were thrilled last week when we discovered that the brand of dog harness we'd been looking for was available nearby. We went in, and the salesman assured us the model we were looking at would work (though it was different from one we already have); we were a bit skeptical, but bought it anyway. Today, one week later, we had to take it back because - after trying it a few times - we found our dog can back out of it even when it's on its snuggest fit - not a safe situation, obviously. I was told that because the item had been used, they could not take it back under any condition - not for refund, full credit, partial credit, nothing. They Said they were sorry, but their tone really was Not. Very Unsympathetic, actually. Obviously, we'll take our business elsewhere (probably online, though I prefer to buy locally).
