Great dive type bar right downtown. Came here with a group of guys from work and we had a good time. Played some foosball on the table which was nice. They had some free music going on with a nice variety: a folk type band and then some blues music later. Beer selection was pretty stellar and the overall feel of the place fit my requests. I was at the House Pub last night with my friends and we were upstairs in the lounge area. The bartender who was working was extremely rude and condescending. We were drinking like normal bar-goers and laughing like normal people, and he was treating us like we were children. We weren't bothering anyone, nor were we being obnoxious. I felt like we were being babysat. I've lived in St. Charles my entire life, and I've been going to the bars for six years. But I have never felt so offended and uncomfortable during any of those six years at any of the bars. I will never go back to your bar. Which is a shame because you have a great selection of beer, but and incredibly rude staff. I'll be at McNally's. read more

Once we did, the credit machine wasn't working so my boyfriend had to pick up the tab in cash. I constantly felt in the way of someone trying to watch the show. The beer selection is amazing but it's impossible to choose one off the crappy chalkboard menu. Seriously, do something about that. I can't even order a beer or talk to my friends without shouting at the top of my lungs because it is just too darn loud in there. The staff really knows their beer and the 25 taps rotate regularly, often featuring beers with a very limited release in Chicago land or even nationally. Just be aware that they serve no food, but are welcome to bring food in or even have it delivered to the pub. Unless you're looking for Miller or Bud on tap you won't be disappointed. read more

Granted, the Taphouse Grill has an impressive list as well, but there is a low-key, unassuming nature about the House Pub that makes you realize people are here to enjoy craft beer, not to impress a date or brag about how much they think they know about beer. This place is legit. They practically always have bands playing. If they don't, it's most likely because it's an Open Mic Night, which is always a fun change every now and then. The selection of alcohol is definitely wide. I didn't really know what I wanted, and the bouncer(?) helped me out since the bartender was preoccupied at the time. I told him a vague idea of what I wanted, and he pointed me toward a specific drink on the board (can't remember the exact name). Told him I'd rather get something on the cheaper end, and I ended up paying $4 for one of the daily specials. It wasn't the best drink I've ever had (though, I haven't had many), but it was definitely good for the price I had gotten it for. The people there all seemed really friendly. In addition to the band playing on the main floor, there was also a solo musician playing in the upstairs lounge. There were couches. And a fireplace. And another bar. It was really nice! read more

Walked in and no one was there at 5pm on a Saturday and it turned out to be awesome. The bartender was extremely friendly and they had a ton of great beer options. This is the first time yelp has steered me wrong. We went on a Wednesday night, didn't expect it to be packed but thought it would be a decent place to grab a few drinks at least. It smelled horrible, not sure it it was mold in the place or all the hipsters that hadn't bathed in a while. Couldn't find the martini bar upstairs, we did find a bathroom upstairs with some old leather couches in a little waiting area outside the bathrooms. Then there was the squealing on the mic , the multicolored hair girl with the Ukulele was the last straw. We were in and out in 5 minutes, unbearable. Two stars were given because of the beer selection. -------------EDIT-------------- The personal response from management here is a really nice touch and I'm willing to give the place a second chance. I really ragged on them in this review and they still took the time to respond and explain themselves. The sewage problem is really unfortunate and the downtown area was crawling with bugs, so it would have taken a lot to turn my night around at that point. I'd add another half star to the review if I could because of the management here, I wish all businesses would take the time to respond like this to someone who had a bad experience and blasted them on the Internet. Yelp doesn't allow half stars and the 3 star reads A-OK, which wasn't the experience I had but they've convinced me to give them another shot when I'm in the area. read more

Read a lot of awesome reviews about this place so I wanted to check it out. They have a ton of different kinds of beers but I thought it was kind of crampy. Not because there were too many people but rather the bar is really narrow so there isn't a lot of room to walk without bumping into people. Atmosphere was good and so was beer but it was kind of pricey and I am from the loop. I would go back again but next time bring a little extra $$. read more

i love this place for so many reasons. 1. they have a huge beer list, and being the beer snob that I am, its nice to have more to choose from than the standard domestic crap 2. there is olmost always live music, and its local artists, a few times i have walked in a saw friends playing 3. the bartenders and owner are awesome. great service. 4. on thursdays they have jazz upstairs in the lounge, which is a huge room, stuffed with couches everywhere. i am always happy and relaxed when i visit the house pub. read more

I never really go to the bars in St Charles, so the fact that I've been here a few times makes it the STC bar I've been to the most often. My friends and I just like it... it isn't too crowded, there are different areas you can sit in, and they have a ton of beers so you know you'll find a favorite or be able to try something new. I really liked their beer selection because I am a big beer snob. They have a lot of good, classic choices as well as some originals you don't see too many places. They had a live band and didn't even charge a cover. They also had free popcorn. Good beer, free popcorn and a no cover live band? Staff is friendly, beer selection excellent, and they know their beer (hear that, Geneva Ale House?).
