An old friend recommended this place, so I knew I was in good hands before even trying. The entrance was packed with people waiting. A great sign. Since it was just me, I was able to be seated immediately at the sushi bar. Good enough for me! Oh, the things I've seen at the sushi bar in my past. I cannot comment further. The staff is super friendly. You don't order from the sushi chefs, a quick learn. In no time, a lovely server, Melody (maybe Melanie), delightful regardless of my dereliction, came to take my order. I was resolute in my decision. I'd seen a Mai Tai on someone else's table. When do you ever order those?! Then it was the pork taco as my boy suggested. I asked her only if one was enough. She confirmed. The Mai Tai is everything you want when you order one--boozy masked by fruity sweetness. It's not sailor strength. It's, you can handle a two, maybe three strength. Depends, how good are you? The taco was massive! Certainly I could've packed away two if I wasn't trying to watch it, and have two drinks. It's all about balance. For my taste, it did need a little Sriracha, which the sushi chef pretended to get a dish, until I just called for the bottle. To be honest, I kept salivating over the sushi creations at the bar; the eel looked succulent, the tuna sumptuous, and the additional Sriracha, well... Beyond that, I learned that Pono means, "to be lawful, acceptable, beautiful, & correct. Doing what is right. To be good." Not only are the Hawaiian classics and sushi solid, they roll out amazing specials daily- Go For The Specials! When they say Chef, they mean Chef. The dishes (specials especially) are inspired, flavors layered- you can tell there is an attention to detail that's hard to find on the coast. Our first time here after the recomendation of a friend. Not impressed at all. My gf had shrimp tacos. $9 per taco? It was good but not that good. I had a combo meal, teriyaki chicken and korean beef. The beef was barely existent - a single strip of a short rib, complete with bones and hardly any meat. The chicken was a small piece of a thigh, all highly salty and no other flavor. $23?? Yikes, these were way over priced for what they gave us. Service was meh at best. "Best of Florence"? Yikes. The food was acceptable: fish was fresh, combinations inventive, and portions large. As many other reviewers have mentioned, order well in advance, either through lack of staff or poor organization, it takes them quite a while to put an order together... in our case almost 2 hours from call-in at 4:30 on a Friday afternoon. read more

I had made reservations for the Hukilau about a week prior to the dinner date. Upon arrival, they couldn't find our reservation. We did get a table, at least. We ordered drinks and ordered dinner. After an hour and a half, I noticed that three other tables, that had come in after us, were eating. I figured they forgot our order, so I saw Christian and asked him about it. He told me to talk to someone standing next to him. When I asked him about our dinner, I was expecting a response, such as "I will check on it". What I got from him was "well sometimes that's just the way the cookie crumbles", which led me to believe that he must be the owners son. He added that our food was being served now, and that I should go eat, which I did. I had just sat down when our server came back, furious, and said that she had told me that the food would be out shortly. I figured the young man must have told our server that I'd asked about dinner, and had done it in a way that obviously set her off. I didn't hear her if she had said that dinner would be out shortly, and it could be because the restaurant was so noisy that I had a hard time the group at our table, and we all had to repeat ourselves often. She chewed us out and said that the other table was having appetizers, and she said it with a loud voice, a snarl, and with attitude. I was too taken aback and shaken up by her attitude to even answer, but I didn't think all three tables were having appetizers. The young man made some comment to me about "you should know that since you use to be a server". I barely responded because I was shocked at how the two servers had become so nasty over a simple, reasonable question. The young man asked what he could do for us, and my friend said he could cover our drinks. The young man replied "but you ordered them", and my friends said "yes, but you asked what you could do". It went downhill from there, and our friend finally asked them to leave so we could just eat our dinner. The female server, who said she was the owner's daughter, said that she would NOT leave, and told my friend that she could leave, to which my friend threw out an expletive, and we were asked to leave, and the server added "and no to-go containers for you" in a nasty, almost hissing tone. My friends said they were upset because of the way the two servers had treated me, so that was the impetus for their response. The friends added that they had not been back in years, because the last time it took 2 hours to get their food. Me and my husband had not been back since April of this year. At that time, we brought some out-of-town friends with us for lunch and my friend got food poisoning from a burger she ate there. We had all eaten the same things, other than the burger, in the prior 24 hours, at least. I use to love this place, the owners, and the food, and we have been customers since the time that they had the food truck. After this experience, combined with the last one, we will never go back. read more

My father was visiting from Thailand with his wife.. and we took them to the coast. Then... this incredible restaurant blessed our lives!!! My father is a retired Corp. Exec. Chef and we had several restaurants growing up. And he was shocked and excited about the complex and stunning dishes, large portions and more importantly, the hospitality! He said it was the best food he's had since he arrived in Seattle a few weeks ago. We had the Hawaiian fish and chips, three-cheese burger, shrimp tacos, tostadas, salmon sashimi, a special , and lots o yummy noises! The condiments are incredible, the sides and everything on the plates were licked clean and I have two picky kids! We live in Eugene and will be back! Oh My Delicious! My mouth died and went to Hawaii! In florence for our 25th anniversary trip and stopped in here twice. Both visits by far exceeded our expectations. The mood is casual with a complete island feel. Servers are friendly and quick to offer suggestions and make sure your drinks stay full and your needs are met. Their chowder is a blend of Manhattan and New Enland with an Island twist. Oh my perfection!! I got the special (Thai Salmon Fettuccine) and hubby got the Peanut Mango Chicken. Both dishes were blended perfectly enticing your tastebuds to want more! The salmon was perfection and the Thai mint sauce was unbelievable. The Chicken was crispy and the flavor profile was deliciously blended to enhance the Pacific Fusion experience. So I've not been living out this way for very long and what great "sign" as a welcome for me than having fantastic sushi on the central coast!!! This particular restaurant has just changed from a food truck to a brick and mortar building and I am SO HAPPY about that!! I've had a hard time trying to follow where the truck is located and now the place won't be moving around!! We ordered a bunch of sushi at the sushi bar and the 2 guys behind the bar were just sweet, charming and put out amazing food for us. We had most of our usuals which is mostly nigiri. Their nigiri cuts are like steaks I swear. Not a one bite deal here. I almost needed a knife and fork for some of the sushi. ;) Their menu is loaded with lots of Hawaiian choices and not everything is sushi of course. They've got spam even too to go with the Hawaiian feel to the place. Speaking of the place, it is a very fun looking restaurant. I actually expected some parrot heads to show up as it's got that feel to it. It's not terribly big but just quaint enough. The prices were also very reasonable even though we did order a bunch of sushi. This means we can visit them more often and it will be part of our usual stops. read more

This was probably the worst experince I have ever had at a resturant. I am utterly shocked that people flock to this place and give it 5 star reviews. We were seated at 11:30 am, opening, and proceeded to watch events unfold. During the hour that we sat there, without food, I watched a server use the knife for cutting lemons and other bar produce to unclog the register reel. After using the knife on the register he placed it back on the cutting board for produce. We watched a "sushi chef" use his arms to wipe sweat from his forehead and then wipe his arms with a kitchen towel, then use the same towel to wipe his prep area and knife. We sat there for almost an hour watching this all, and still our order wasn't prepared. I will acknowledge the kindness of the manager in allowing us to cancel our order, but the food quality and cleanliness of preparation is most definitely not acceptable, unless you want food contamination. read more
