I used to tell everyone this was the best chowder in Brookings. Now they raised the price from $10 to $11 and it's not even filled to the brim of the cup anymore. Went to eat on a Thursday night @6 pm. They were busy and the food was ready in 35 minutes. Not a long wait to enjoy freshly cooked seafood. As always, the food was fantastic. We ordered a clam strip dinner and a shrimp dinner. Cooked to perfection and not greasy. Their coleslaw is the bomb. This place is always busy but so worth the wait. Do not go here!!!! Ordered fish and chips took one bite of it and canned it. Flys all over landing on food, shrimp sitting out on the counter. Fish and chips were the worst fish and chips I've ever tasted. Barely any breading, dry, and 100% is not fresh fish. Waited 30 minutes for it just to taste it and throw it away. Do not waist time going here. You should instead stop at the Irish pub. That is the freshest fish and chips I have ever tasted. I went here on Friday night (5/26/23), and had a nice seafood dinner. I ordered a seafood basket consisting of fried halibut, shrimp, squid, clam strips, and an oyster. The shrimp and oyster were my favorites. I ordered it with tater tots, which is an alternative side that I prefer over French fries. I also ordered a cup of clam chowder which was decent. However, I wish it had more clams and potatoes. The service was par, and the food is ordered at the front counter. The dining room is more worn out. It has that feel of eating at a fisherman's harbor. The food is good, but I'd recommend spending a little bit more money to have Spinner's in Gold Beach. I like checking out the souvenir-ey and candy-filled shop next door and always score some home made fudge there while I wait. I needed to stop and pick up some lunch before we hit the road and this is definitely a winner. They have tons of picnic tables outside you can sit at or there's open dining in the main building now to. The fish and clam chowder are awesome. My husband ordered way to much food, but we wanted to try everything. The prices are reasonable compared to many of the locations we've been traveling to along the coastline. The fish is cooked perfectly with light batter and the clam chowder is well seasoned. Hush puppies were nice a crispy, same with the fries and tatter tots. I would highly recommend stopping there to grab lunch or dinner, it's well worth it. Years ago we drove through the area, and I remembered "the little fish place down the hill from 101" and how good the food was. Today on our way home, we happened to be passing through the area just at lunch time, and I suggested to the Hubby that we try to find it again... so glad we did... We shared the combo of the day: fish, shrimp, oysters, clams and calamari all piled on top of a mess of fries... a fried mass of seafood goodness... the fish was nice and flaky, the shrimp juicy and fat, calamari thick, and oysters plump.... The only reason I removed a point was that the clams were a little dry and chewy, and it's called the Clam Shack so I had some higher expectations... Otherwise, service was friendly and we enjoyed sitting outside in the sunshine. Although it was the middle of the lunch rush, service was fairly quick. The food was good. The fish and chips were cooked well and were not greasy. That's a positive. The atmosphere has a typical beach vibe. What was disappointing was the attitude of the counter person. She was anything but pleasant and gave the impression of being annoyed by simple questions about the menu. Even after attempts to engage in pleasantries she refused to interact or even make eye contact. It stood out enough for me to comment on it and give the restaurant a poor rating. I understand people can have rough days but the front counter person sets the tone for the entire experience. Once that is damaged it's hard to overcome first impressions. I appreciate their hustle and the simple, straight forward menu but the fish and chips was flavorless, no salt no seasoning, the tarter sauce tasted like plain Mayo, the crab cakes were battered and generic, similar to frozen food. We always check reviews while traveling anymore. The Hungry Clam popped as a good choice, with the best Clam Chowder around. My wife loves Clam Chowder, me, not a big fan. We gave it a shot, I had a cheeseburger and fries, along with fried pickles. There's seating inside or plastic picnic tables outside, if you don't mind seagulls trying to eat with you. There's plenty of parking and a cute souvenir shop next door with dessert (ice cream, fresh fudge, and handmade chocolates). I went for lunch during the week and there was no wait. Stopped here with my family on our round about way home from Klamath Falls. I was looking forward to some fresh delicious fish and chips. I was so disappointed! The fish was really bland and was not battered at all. We also ordered the halibut bites which were very obviously a frozen product as well as the chicken strips. I just don't understand how small establishments like this with a treasure trove of very fresh seafood right out the back door resort to serving frozen processed food and charge an arm and a leg for it?!?! The ambiance is pretty local, almost diner-ish but I beg you not to let that hinder your food cravings. Prices are fair for fresh seafood. First, I would give 5 stars to the woman with the sparkly mask who took our order and juggled nearly everything by herself in a very busy restaurant. She was amazing. As for the food, I would give it 0 stars. I ordered the clam strip basket with hushpuppies and W ordered the crab cake basket. This is a place where you order at the counter, so I warned him that he should order something else, but he wanted crab cakes and I couldn't stop him from ordering them. My clams were so breaded that I could barely detect them. The breading wasn't spiced and it was just like eating little greasy bread pieces. I LOVE tater tots, but I don't eat them often because they are evil little greasy things. These tater tots were the worst I've ever had. The taste was so weird. I can't even explain it. The slaw was drenched in mayo. Everything was practically inedible. As we were waiting forever for our food, I told W that they were probably defrosting the crab cakes. As usual, I was right. These perfectly round flat crab cakes coated with tons of bread crumbs and possible deep fried (didn't even resemble a real crab cake) were super crunchy on the outside and super gooey on the inside. The middle was like a chowder with maybe a few strings of crab. Inedible. We ended up throwing 90% of our food in the trash. Never again. read more
