Immediately saw that the kitchen and servers weren't on the same page since there were orders piling up in the kitchen, and nobody was delivering anything. 3 servers were working. One was hustling in her section, our server was working as well (although very frustrated with the kitchen), and the third (young one) wasn't doing a g.d. thing. I ordered eggs over easy (I got scrambled), with an English muffin and bacon. My wife ordered scrambled and well done bacon (got almost raw bacon.) The eggs had no taste, the toast and muffin were pale (and maybe went into a toaster for a minute), and the potatoes were bland. I ate about 20% of my food, my wife 5%. It was that bad. This is a local breakfast and lunch place, which was recommended by locals. We decided to give it a try as we had a large party and were informed that everything on the menu was great. It was in fact a very busy restaurant and their was a wait to be seated. After putting a couple a tables together, they were able to accommodate us fairly quickly. So this is the only "quick" thing that happened. Overall service is at a slow pace and barely on the acceptable side. Yes, they were many choices on the menu, and everyone was able to find something they liked. Overall quality was good and their French toast was on the better side of normal Diner French toast. My husband and I went on a Sunday morning around 9:30. The place was packed! We walked in and didn't see a hostess stand so we were a little confused, but the owner was in the front with a clipboard taking down names for the wait list. We were short on time, so we sat at the countertop area. We were seated quickly and the owner was super friendly. I had a hot chocolate, banana stuffed French toast, and a side of bacon. As you can tell from my order I have a huge sweet tooth. I'm not a huge French toast fan, but it was SO GOOD! Ive been driving by this restaurant for quite some time and felt like I should swing in to give it a try. Walking in I was less than impressed with almost every table being dirty. It looked as if the servers went on strike and refused to clear everything except the check after the customers left. I was not greeted but rather had to approach the staff by the bar before being greeted and then told to sit "wherever". After finding a seat, things did get better with some discussion about the King Kong challenge with the server. This challenge consist of consuming a 7lb omelette with every available topping on the menu, as well as, toast and home fries in a hour or less. The challenger must completely clean the plate for a chance at fame, a picture on the wall, and a t-shirt or cough up 30 dollars. After much debate I settled in with the menu item named the Orangutan which is a chicken salad wrap with pesto, spinach, tomato, and bacon. I wasn't amazed by the wrap but it was good enough for me to finish it entirely. The fries that come with this dish were in my opinion no different than wet soggy noodles with under cooked potato particles stuffed inside. Overall, pretty disappoibted with lunch but then again I've only ever heard about the good breakfast/brunch menu that this restaurant offers. The Hungry Monkey is a good, traditional brunch spot in Newport. I visited this weekend with a few friends - we got there in the middle of brunch prime time, but were seated immediately. They have a large menu and I opted for the Irish Style Benedict, which has hash in place of the more traditional Canadian Bacon - it was definitely tasty with the right amount of hash to avoid making it too heavy. The home fries were also good - well spiced and not over cooked or greasy like many breakfast spots. Both friends opted for the breakfast burrito, which they both enjoyed. I have been to the Hungry Monkey on four other occasions so this review is not a one off. The four other occasions the service had been slow, because my family and I had gone on the weekend during the busy tourist season we kind of expected that. The food is nothing great and actually tastes like standard run of the mill diner food. You do pay on average $1-2 dollars more for the hipster type vibe of the place and also trips around the world for the weird monkey stuffed animal that dominates the walls of this place. My family and I went on a slow Tuesday for breakfast, for it being so slow we thought it would be quick. We ordered our food from one of the two waitresses, she took our order and during the order we got the bored "uh huh" while ordering. After waiting for 30 minutes with NO refills for me, my wife and two kids, the waitress only brought half of our order. Which she got completely wrong, my wife is a vegetarian and the put bacon all over the eggs which obviously she couldn't eat! After another literally 15 minutes I asked for our bill, she brought over the full bill, thinking we already had eaten, what?!? we ended up leaving (with my hungry daughter in tears) after being there for an hour we headed to another place to eat. I'm probably not doing our experience justice but it was absolutely atrocious! We will never return, which is sad because at one point we had some decent memories here. read more

We walked to the Corner Corner and were told it would be a 45 minute wait there. Okay, not waiting 45 minutes for breakfast, so we'll go to this place next door called the Hungry Monkey! As soon as we walked in, we should have known we were in for trouble. The hostess was helping bus tables and would come back to the hostess stand to make a phone call and then walk away again. We were standing at the hostess stand for probably 5 minutes and she never once acknowledged our existence. We finally asked another waitress if we could just sit at the counter. After sitting at the counter, it took them 20 minutes (!) to bring us menus. We had found the menu online and told them we did not need physical menus and were ready to order. We ordered one hot coffee, one iced coffee, a pumpkin muffin, a side of bacon, and a California Benedict. It took them 10+ minutes just to bring us our coffees. We then waited 45 or so minutes for our food to come out, with no attention from the wait staff to refill our coffees or ask if we needed anything else. When we received the food, the muffin and bacon were fine, but the hollandaise sauce on the Benedict was curdled and the potatoes were undercooked. I am sympathetic to staffing shortages at restaurants. I understand that these are hard times. However, waiting over an hour for food without being told to expect to wait that long, without an apology, and without any attention from the staff is unacceptable. We would have been happy with the mediocre food if it had been delivered quickly. Overall, we had a very annoying and disappointing experience and wished we had just waited the 45 minutes to be seated at the Corner Cafe. read more

We were visiting Newport from Seattle. It was a pleasant surprise to find this breakfast place with delicious home food. My husband ordered a Cali style benedic and my was spider monkey. Both were well cooked and the ingredients were fresh. You can see that they put alot of love and attention to their home fries!. Crunchy outside and soft inside...yuumy!. Poached eggs were perfect. Strongly encourage everyone to stay away from this place. We tried to go for breakfast on Wednesday morning at 10 AM... It was not crowded at all. Five of us total. Two of the children simply ordered cereal with milk. The other three orders were very straightforward eggs. We waited 45 minutes during which no one even checked on our table to see if we needed drinks etc. After 45 minutes the youngest in our party were literally in tears for food. We asked if there's anyway they could simply pour the cereal into a bowl with milk and the waitress was dead serious and said that would be about another 30 minutes. She let us know if we wanted to leave there would be no charge for the coffee and three waters she had given us. I'm just disappointed that we waited so long and wasted so much time. Not even an apology. We could see the boxes of cereal so I'm not sure if we might've been on some type of candid camera or frankly if there were drugs involved. The experience was that bad. I was very pleased not only with the eggs but also the sides - which were plentiful; I couldn't finish my breakfast. The staff is excellent. Saturday morning, walking on Broadway, looking to grab breakfast with the wife. We have been to most of the places on the street and like usual at 10 am, Corner Cafe has about 10-12 people waiting outside. We see that they have one or two open tables at Hungry Monkey and decide to check it out. We were seated pretty quickly, and the first thing we noticed is this place was on "Man Vs. Food" which was one of my favorite food network shows. So bonus points on being on the show, just I didn't feel like trying a 15 egg omelet challenge. Wife ordered the Irish Eggs Benedict, which was corned beef hash added to the normal dish with a side of homefries. I got a breakfast burrito and a cup of coffee. Coffee was decent, hot, fast service, no complaints on it. Good black coffee. Wife loved the fact that the eggs Benedict had a runny yolk, too many places in Newport over cook the eggs and you get a solid yolk vice runny which ruins an overeasy or Benedict. You could definitely tell everything was home made, her complaint was that the corned beef hash was rather bland. Usually corned beef is rather rich and that with the yolk would have been awesome. It seemed like it just lacked seasoning. My breakfast burrito was huge. It was a Spicy Breakfast Burrito, so I was really looking forward to it. Unfortunately, once I bit into it, the words "unrealized potential" popped in my head. The burrito has a solid core of well made scrambled eggs. Usually, in a breakfast burrito you see the eggs cooked and then the cheese, salsa, and meats are quick cooked in and mixed so you get a homogenous mixture. Unfortunately, everything was in layers and there was that same "not seasoned" taste. Considering it was a Spicy Burrito, I was sad I wasn't greater by a stronger taste. The salsa was rather mild, I felt that pepper would have been nice on it. I just added some myself. The service was great, the atmosphere is nice, I just feel like everything here is made from scratch and made to please everyone and therefore pleases no one. The lack of seasoning is even more evident in the home fries. They are great cooked soft potatoes. The crust on them has a really nice texture. Unfortunately, all you taste is potato, no slight seasoning, just potato. Anything would be nice, thyme, oregano, something. After having breakfast, I realized that I should probably come back again to have their French toast, since looking at it, it seems they specialize in that over egg dishes. I really thing this place could be a lot better if they decided to spice the foods a bit more. You can find better brunch elsewhere in Newport. Service is extremely slow, we were asked to wait outside for our table, and the food is mediocre at best. We waited about 20 minutes from when we ordered to when we received our food. I had the breakfast burrito (Spicy Monkey) and the food quality was very subpar for a place that prides itself on brunch. I feel like I could have made the meal for a quarter of the price. The scrambled eggs in the burrito were gummy and over cooked, the sausage lacked any real texture and tasted artificial, and the salsa tasted it like it came straight from a jar. The raisin toast that was part of the omelette was an extra 50 cents, and there was nowhere on the menu that stated it. I'm 99% sure the raisin toast came from the Sunmaid raisin toast package. The side of yogurt that we ordered came to an additional $4 and it tasted like someone took a grocery store carton of yogurt and dumped it in a bowl to serve to us.
