While visiting Newport, RI for work - my co-worker and I had a delightful breakfast at this café. I decided on the Irish style eggs benedict - which substituted corned beef hash for Canadian bacon - it was deliciously rich and left me satisfied. It was served with the house fries that I heard so many good things about on Yelp - and they lived up to the hype - great seasoning and crisp on the outside - soft and warn in the inside! Food was just okay, the selection is nothing great. And the service was lacking. I ordered a Ruben burger cooked "medium". It came grey and colorless. While the burger tasted okay, I also ordered chilli cheese fries. The home made fries were cold and soggy and tasted off-putting - kinda like dirt or dust and I had to ask for the chilli and cheese because they forgot to add them. When the chilli came it was not the kind of chilli you'd want on fries: two or three big chunks of steak and some beans here and there but mostly broth - definitely not anything you could smother on fries. The place wasn't terribly busy but the waitress didn't seem to have time for the three of us, she never checked on us or even refilled waters. Overall it took roughly two hours. read more

I had the stuffed French toast. The first few bites was delicious. It's basically a French toast sandwich with fruits and cream. If you like sweet this is a good choice. The place doesn't have AC so I don't recommend you come in on a hot day. Overall a normal simple breakfast place with a mascot. I really want to like this place. It seems so fun and likable, but I just can't get past the food and the hit-or-miss service. The menu makes everything seem delicious, but the descriptions are much better than the actual food. Love love this place!!! My brother moved to Newport last year and this was my first place I ate at. It is amazing here. They have great coffee and I always get the southern style biscuits. It is a heart attack on a plate, but it taste sooo good! Everything on the menu is truly delicious. read more

My husband and I have been to this place twice (we only visit Newport about once a year at most). We absolutely love it! The food is great, the portions are great, and the service is fantastic. It's not a fancy, white-table-cloth kind of place, just an interesting room, a great specials board and excellent food. If you like a sweet breakfast, try the stuffed french toast. Personally, I prefer a traditional eggs/meat/potatoes/toast kind of breakfast, and The Hungry Monkey delivers well. We haven't been here for lunch yet, but the menu and specials look great. Great food, my husband and I both ordered French toast with strawberries, his had the cream cheese stuffing. The waitress was extremely friendly and took great care of us. The food came out quickly too. It's a nice place, but very open and since it's winter it was pretty cold inside, and the heat was not circulating too well. My husband and I decided to head to the Hungry Monkey for brunch on a Sunday morning. We were told that there was a 20 min wait, which is understandable. After waiting for 20 minutes, table we were seated. We quickly put our food orders in, it then took an hour for our food to reach us. The waitstaff was great! However the kitchen staff appeared to have no sense of urgency (we had a clear view of the kitchen from where we sat). Several points there were 3 waitresses waiting in the kitchen for the orders. The Hungry Monkey either needs to add more kitchen staff or find replacements for the staff they currently have. I have never waiting so long for eggs. Quick, friendly service followed up with a great looking plate of food. I was incredibly disappointed when I took my first bite. My plate of pancakes and sausage links just tasted... average. Walked over to this establishment after finding out I had to wait over 30 minutes plus for seat at Corner Café. Sat at counter and waitress served me a coffee right away. I think we hit the Hungry Monkey on an off day. Went there last Sunday and the AC was busted on an extremely hot day. The Iced Coffee had run out so they gave me hot coffee over ice which was just O.K. The menu however is extremely vast and very creative. The decor is casual and fun with monkey's all over the place, cushions on long benches which span the perimeter of the restaurant. The food is such a great value. When our dishes arrived we were pleased. My husband ordered the Portuguese Benedict - said the cheese sauce wasn't as heavy as hollandaise and the eggs were cooked to perfection. I ordered 2 eggs, hash browns, and bacon. The taters were a bit oily for my taste but overall a decent meal. Try the Portuguese Bolo bread under sides - it's like a sweet roll with out the frosting - yummy! We'd definitely go back to try it when there is air, and iced coffee. read more

No water, no coffee refills, no service. Two plates came out first and 5 minutes later two more plates came out. Forgot our toast, forgot our home fries. Horrible Food. I ordered an egg sandwich on english muffin, which was almost inedible. Poached Egg on Hash. It wasn't even good hash, it was a potato mixture with a little meat. I was in the mood for something savory so I ordered a wrap called the Orangutan and I enjoyed every bite, including the homemade fries! If you're laid back, you might enjoy this place, but I prefer a quieter, more peaceful environment. This is my go-to place for breakfast! The atmosphere is so fun and the place is small, which gives it a cozy feel. If you go on a Sunday morning after church, expect a wait. I have never had to wait more than 20 minutes and I think it is well worth the wait. The staff is great! they are all locals from Newport, most living right down the street. They are very committed to their neighborhood which always makes me smile. The servers are fun and cheery, even when they are super busy and you can see the stress streaming down their face. Sometimes the service seems slow, but do not be fooled and think these guys are just fooling around. Most often it is just a two man show and with the prices so low, you can imagine all the hungry men that go in their and order everything that sounds good! The food is amazing! I have never had anything bad to say about anything I have ordered and I have had almost the entire menu! I am debating on taking on their challenge omelet consisting of 12 eggs and EVERYTHING they have to offer to put in an omelet! The only reason why I take away a star from this review is because their cups that they use for water often taste like dish washing fluid. Anything I order to drink from there I make sure comes in a bottle. This is easy to do since most of their juices (except orange) comes in a bottle all for your own. I went here for brunch. The food was good! I really wanted the sweet bread French toast but it must have been popular because they were out. I got the gorilla plate instead. Eggs were ok, home fries were great, and the pancakes were nice and fluffy. I wish they had more combo options though. The atmosphere was nice, and the theme was cute.
