Solid coffee + breakfast sandwich spot! Walked in on a weekend morning and ordered the Broken Yolk Egg & Cheese Sandwich, and got it between two waffles because I was really feeling it that morning. It was so delicious, I even went back the next morning to get it again, but that time with the housemade English Muffin - even better! I also appreciate all the cheeky pro-equal rights signage! This would be a 5 star BUT there is room for improvement. First the sound proofing absolutely horrendous it is so hard to think in there because of all the reverberations in sound. This is a very easily fixed problem. Secondly the amount of outlets is sub par at best come with all your devices fully charged unless you will be scrambling to find a place with an outlet. Hope these things change soon because would love to come change this review to a 5 star!! read more

I popped in here for breakfast and coffee on my final day in town during a conference. I wanted something more substantial than a pastry and their menu piqued my interest while browsing Yelp the evening before. We were some of the first through the door, apparently, and were greeted warmly by the staff who were putting the finishing touches on the pastry case for the day. I had the avocado toast and a cup of coffee. I appreciated being able to serve my own coffee and that it was both hot and fresh. The avocado toast was good -- well-toasted bread with an abundance of mashed avocado, topped with sea salt and pepper. Several other conference attendees filtered in and out during my time, each raving about their coffee and breakfast sandwiches or pastries. It seems like you can't go wrong here. read more

Been to the Inkwell more than a few times over my 4 years at IU; overall, it's pretty much just alright. This visit, I had a very subpar oat milk cortado and the weekly breakfast sandwich, my girlfriend and her sister weren't super thrilled with their chais - they're mostly foam. Honestly, skip the coffee - go to Hopscotch for that. But, head to Inkwell for pretty decent breakfast sandwiches/lunch items. I really like a place that serves coffee that you can drink when you order it. Especially when I get the coffee for consumption in house. Unlike places that think a coffee needs to be scalding hot at all times, the drip coffee I ordered here was ready to drink. Hot? Sure, but no emergency room visit was needed. And coffee like this you can also taste the flavor. Not only could I taste the coffee, but when I ordered a blueberry scone, I could taste the sweetness in the pastry as well as the blueberries. Although it was mid morning, there was still a variety of pastries left on the table next to the order counter. The coffee house is set up with a bank of tables on the right side, the coffee bar on the left. Towards the back, there looked like a brighter room that was very quiet that I assume was a work room. The kitchen and restrooms are down a hall on the left of the work room. I guess I am getting old...I can remember when people sat in coffee shops and it was a social club. People would discuss thoughts, philosophy, world issues. Now, people have their laptops and some stay all day without making eye contact or saying anything. The staff seemed to echo the sense with minimal efficient direction. The guy at the coffee bar didn't make eye contact with a single person the entire time I was there (let alone say a word.) I got a vanilla decaf latte plus eggs and waffles. I was starving so I didn't get a photo of the waffles before I scarfed them down. My latte had a strange taste, it might have been the vanilla syrup and I didn't end up finishing it. Next time I will just get regular coffee. If you're looking for a good alternative to Starbucks and want local - Inkwell is a great option in downtown Bloomington. Located right on the square, with plenty of comfortable space to sit, study, meet, or just hang out. The space is very nice, and while the menu is limited to classic coffee beverages (no pink drink here) the coffee is good and it's reasonably priced. Staff is always pleasant. Workers unenthusiastic and have an attitude. I got the grilled cheese and English muffin, disgusting. The grilled cheese was very oily and the bread was burnt. The English muffin was dry and flaky. I also got the matcha latte. It was terrible and had no flavor so it tasted like straight matcha not for me. Do not come here. read more

I'm a huge fan of this local coffee place, with friendly and welcoming baristas, ample space to spread out with your work (and outlets!), and most importantly, tasty coffee and yummy pastries, which seem to rotate daily and with the seasons. The cappuccino is on point. Pop tarts, carrot muffins, mini-bundt cakes, and scones are regularly on offer. And they have a very very good chicken salad sandwich. It's all-white meat (regrettably) but has a delicious flavor and is quite moist. Not chunks of chicken but pulled chicken on a warm toasty baguette with arugula and grapes and a tangy Dijon mayo. Such a gem in downtown Bloomington! First, the coffee is really high quality for a reasonable price. Second, every food item I've tried has been excellent. They do not skimp out on avocado for the avocado toast! Inkwell also easily has one of the best cafe layouts in town. The design of the space is really modern, open, and gives off industrial-loft vibes. I'm really digging the Inkwell's vibe: chill, spacious, and still a little hip (though never to the point of sacrificing good customer service). I swung by for a little brunch between classes and got their broken yolk egg sandwich on an English muffin with sriracha mayo. History has taught me not to get too excited about a basic egg sandwich, but this was exceptional. The eggs were silky, the muffin crisp and toasty, and the mayo a perfect medium to bind the textures together. They also make homemade pop-tarts, sometimes with Nutella - how can you resist a fresh take on pop-tarts? (And why hasn't pop-tarts worked out a hazelnut flavor yet? Get on it!) They're delicious, and so is the coffee. This isn't the cheapest deal in Bloomington, but if you want to indulge a little, it's worth it to head over to Inkwell. I finally visited this place after 4 years of driving by and saying I want to try that place! It is amazing! They have a bigger selection than I had expected! The cookies are delicious as are all of their other pastry items. Another unique coffee shop in Bloomington! I was really excited to check it out. Even better, they serve a breakfast menu. This place has not been open long and I didn't even see a sign on the building, just a stand outside. It's quite big inside and the design of the chairs, lights and walls are a wood industrial mix. I quite liked it! I grabbed an Americano. They didn't have any sugar free syrups but they had Splenda. They have a nice variety of pastries and I got to try a piece of one of their cookies and it tasted ah-mazing. I had already ordered the cinnamon sugar toast (a childhood favorite) so I didn't buy one but I definitely have my eye on one next time! The menu was filled with some really good sounding breakfast/brunch options. The Americano was really good and the cinnamon sugar toast was interesting. It was made with sourdough bread which was a really interesting flavor. I wasn't sure I liked it but the more I ate the more I liked it! It was a great way to start my morning and it is right on the square downtown so it's convenient to get to. I can't wait to try more!! ETA: added a lunch menu in October! read more

Can never have enough coffee shops in town! I tried out The Inkwell for brunch with a close friend: we both had eggs over easy, bacon, and toast then split a waffle order. I loved the waffles and will certainly be getting them again soon! I also ordered a cappuccino. While they didn't have any flavored syrups available, I do think it is pretty neat that they will be making their own (available soon). I think the atmosphere gives off a great vibe, though we did notice a few kinks that will probably work themselves out as they "mature" as a business. Located in the former NoCo location, this local coffee and pastry shop is a welcome addition to downtown Bloomington. This space is too good to not have something awesome in it. Drip coffee, full coffee bar, tea, baked goodies, free wifi. Our lattes were delish and who can pass up an artisinal pop tart??? The mkocha was not sweet, but a savory cocoa flavor that will be delightful in winter. Word is they will be adding a full menu in October. Can't wait! read more

AMAZING study space. The atmosphere, noise level, and decorations are great for a new coffeehouse. Lacks a little personality, though. The staff is haughty and fake, but they take care of you relatively quickly and don't engage you too much (if you like that). UPDATE: Since I left my initial review, the front of house staff has turned over. They're much friendlier and do care to engage you in fun conversation at the register. Smiling faces every time I go now! The prices are high--had to pay $8.64 for 6 pieces of bacon. However, the food is good. I love the granola parfait. Service is quick. Coffee selection is limited and doesn't taste extraordinary by any means. Good if you're downtown and need a place to set up a laptop and bang out some work. read more

Visiting my boyfriend in Bloomington and we wanted to try Inkwell because 1. we love trying new coffee places and 2. the attractive, modern interior + menu design. The coffee did not disappoint, but that's coming from someone who has never had a heart shaped latte, so I was ecstatic I enjoyed my mocha cappuccino. It was the right amount of sweet to bitter for me, but they have many more drinks to try. For food, I ordered the chicken salad sandwich, which seemed like one of the most popular menu items as everyone around me was getting the same. Unfortunately, it was more on the bland side compared to other chicken salad sandwiches I've had, and I personally would have enjoyed a softer bread such as a croissant, however, that's personal preference.
