The location had tough parking (tight spots too). But the restaurant itself was cute and very Italian-like. The server seemed cold at first but he eventually started joking with us and he was pretty nice. The bruschetta was underwhelming - i definitely could have made it at home. The mozzarella was good though - different style than other spots. The pizza was standard (good), the fettuccine Alfredo almost had no flavor - had to add pepper and I never do.. the garlic pasta was also average. We didn't love the chocolate cake but the gelato was great! Not sure if come back - I have too many go-to Italian restaurants closer to home. read more

I first heard of The Italian Oven around the time that the owner of Esposito's restaurant in Fairfax was being forced to close her restaurant. This was due to the landlord telling her she had two weeks to close her place, as he intended to put a car wash in its spot. I kept an eye on this story. That's how I discovered that Maria Esposito ended up working at her cousin's restaurant, The Italian Oven. Thus, the place had been on my radar, and finally, we got there. We were here on a Saturday for an early dinner. The place was almost empty at the time, so we were told to pick whichever table we wanted. We chose a booth that was by a window. The place does have an Italian restaurant ambiance, complete with checkered green and white tablecloths. Our server was prompt in getting to us. We gave him our drink orders. I had water while my husband had a Heineken Zero. At that time, we placed our appetizer order, which was fried zucchini. Their menu is overwhelming. It was tough trying to figure out what to try. Finally, I decided to try their spaghetti aglio e olio, and my husband had spaghetti with Italian sausage. We both chose to have side salads. The salads had a nice creamy, garlicky dressing. However, they also had an overabundance of button mushrooms, as well as pickled beets. I'm no fan of either of these items, so my husband gladly took them from my salad. As for the zucchini, we got spoiled after all those years of having it at Esposito's. The Italian Oven's version was a close second to Esposito's. My spaghetti aglio e olio was well seasoned. We had not been to this restaurant in about a year because we found it at best just ok. The usual parmesana preparations we tend to favor were acceptable. This time they were worse. The tomato sauce was watery and lacked the essential marinara taste anyone would expect. The gnocchi was soft and lacked the flavor found in most other places. That the restaurant had many empty tables on a Sunday evening might suggest patrons are going elsewhere for these same reasons. The pricing is good, compared with many other Italian restaurants in the area, but the weaknesses here would seem to lie in the chef or maybe management for not itself sampling the cuisine to see the obvious problems. Service was also good though our waiter was a bit aggressive in urging us to buy sparkling water (we did not) and their mediocre Gelato (which we did). read more

I recently had spine surgery so I haven't been able to visit physically yet but I was able to order online via Yelp. It came piping hot (I live half a mile away). The vongole and carbonara had great flavor and freshness. I enjoyed my chicken cacciatore. It was a bit too greasy for my taste but I liked the seasoning! Best pizza I have ever had. And I grew up in NYC. The crust is amazing. I got eggplant and garlic. Omg! My bf got ham green pepper and onions. So good. My wife is gluten free and we are never able to find spaghetti. She got the spaghetti bolognese and it was one of the best pasta dishes we have had. We came here because our favorite Italian restaurant got shut down by the evil City of Fairfax needing a new car wash vs a great family owned restaurant. Maria, the owner took some of her staff to the Italian Oven, and they continue to be great hosts and serve wonderful eggplant. Nice airy atmosphere with some live music at times. My wife and I had drove to McClain from N.C, and we were staying across the street at a hotel. It was a combination of a business and our Anniversary getaway. It was 5:30 and we were ready for dinner. The front desk suggested this little Italian Restaurant. So grateful they did. It was the perfect evening from the moment we walked in and the genuine greeting we received. As we sat we felt like we had back taken back in time to a small Trattoria in a little village. Our server, Salim greeted us and set the tone for our dinner walking us through the menu. We ordered oysters on the mussels, so fresh and the broth was incredible. I had the gumbo and she had the Cesar Salad. Both were fresh and such incredible favors with fresh baked bread. We our entrée I had the Pasta Beef Bolognese and to be honest, I do not remember what she had. What a difference in-house made pasta with fresh ingredients makes! Now, when we sat down, we had looked at the dessert menu and my wife tried to order the Banana Foster's Flambé but I had seen it was available on Sundays. Salim was so kind to go back and see, since it was our anniversary, if they could make an exception. At the end of the meal, the owner, Salvatore Esposito, rolled out the cart and made our dessert t the table, it was the crowning touch to our Anniversary dinner! We will never forget this special dinner and the hospitality and love we felt at The Italian Oven from all the staff and the owner. I stayed 3 days in McLean and the hotel manager reccomened this restaurant. It's a small family run business with intimate tables and the most incredible wait staff. Homemade crusty bread is complimentary. We tried the zucchini and calamari appetizer and ground it tasty but not as crisp as I would hope. The entrees were amazing. I highly suggest the manicotti, fettuccine Alfredo with grilled chicken, and pizza. All were FANTASTIC! My kids literally clamored for this pizza all 3 nights of our stay. The salad doesn't come with a meal which is customary in the South where I'm from, but the homemade creamy Italian made it worth the extra cost. Finally, the homemade desserts were out of this world delicious. I heartily endorse this restaurant if you are seeking good Italian. Makes for an excellent date. read more

I ordered a small margherita pizza and it was honestly one of the best pizzas I have ever had. The cheese didnt fall off, but it had good pull, the crust was crunchy but tender and the sauce was delicious. Some small restaurants can tend to get annoyed when you order just one thing, but the owner was very polite and I got my food in about 5 minutes, which is so impressive. Delicious crispy fried eggplant parm sub with fresh house-made bread. The bread is a bit thick and very filling. It's nice that a complimentary large 6 inch loaf is included with the order. The crispy battered fries are quite tasty! The sausage lasagna was very greasy and swimming in oil. After a couple of bites, my hubby through in the towel and sadly tossed it all out. For what it is, a neighborhood Italian restaurant, it gets four stars, but for a person who enjoys Italian like Thompson Italian/ Sfoglina/ Red Hen, this place might not be what you're looking for. This place gives you checkered green tablecloths, free bread with individually wrapped butter, and large portions. They make their own bread and pasta. Their pizza oven is the same one from the 80's and my group ordered a large margherita to share, and it was worth it. I would recommend the pizza, an easy crowd favorite! I ordered the minestrone and the pumpkin ravioli (off their specials). My dishes were fine, but not standouts. The cannoli was delicious, I'd recommend that for dessert. Covid precautions: The servers are not masked, because they are all vaccinated. The tables are close together. Very nice night with friends that we'd go to Esposito's (RIP) with. Nicer atmosphere, great service and very good food. I had a small personal margarita pizza. Others had lamb, chicken and salmon dishes, enjoyed by all. Only issue was parking, there was none since there was a party downstairs. Parked at the bank next door, was told it was okay but there's many signs saying bank only parking but it turned out ok, maybe because the bank was closed. The Paglia e Fieno pasta dish is DELISH!!! It's green and white noodles with mushroom cream sauce and pieces of ham. My husband and I always want different dishes but at The Italian Oven we both love this dish and ordered it. We got our meal to go with a Caesar Salad that has fresh shaved parmigiana cheese and bread. They gave us a generous half a loaf and it was the freshest bread. They forgot to include butter or olive oil, but the bread was so good and moist we didn't miss it. My husband kept dipping his bread in the pasta sauce! This is a must try it meal! read more

Service was good except having to repeatedly fend off leading question sales tactics from the server (e.g., being asked which wine I wanted when I never asked for wine). The staff here is incredibly friendly and attentive. It seemed like a very local place, the type of place you need to know about. I have been very impressed with the Italian oven restaurant. I started going to it when the present manager, Maria Esposito took over after her Restaurant in Fairfax closed. The food at the Italian oven is delicious. The homemade Italian bread is outstanding. And the service is excellent. As is the ambience. I especially enjoy their eggplant Parmesan because they peel the black skin off the eggplant which I find bitter and stringy. I also like that they cut the eggplant very very thin. My only complaint is that they rarely have flounder on the menu.. They most often have Branzino and mahi-mahi. I don't understand why they can't have flounder on the menu regularly. Because they do an excellent flounder à la français. But if that's all I have to complain about then you should try them! read more

Not impressed with this spot. It's definitely a pizza place that's trying to be an Italian restaurant but the food was awful. We came in with a large group, 10-15 people and no one liked their meal. The waiter put all of the wine bottles that they owned on the table and told us to pick one and he could tell us about it. The red bottle we ordered was $50ish and awful. They gave complimentary bread. The waiter tried to upsell us on every bit of the ordering process asking if we wanted a salad for app or pasta as a side which was annoying. When my veal dish came out I was disappointed. The veal pieces were so small and the plate was mainly filled with sauce and mushrooms. For $22-24 per entree, I was expecting more, especially since I'm used to paying this price in NYC for much better quality food! Not all of the meals came out at the same time, which was awkward for those who were hungry and didn't want their food to get cold. Others got the manicotti, chicken parm, eggplant parm and pumpkin ravioli. It was an incredibly expensive meal and we all left feeling disappointed and underwhelmed. Incredible service and food. The ambiance was great too. We got to meet one of the owners who talked to us about the history of the restaurant and its name. A humorous and easy to talk to person who enjoys talking with his customers. The food was all incredible, especially bread/dough they use for their pizza. Wonderfully chewy yet light. Their pastas are solid as well. Nice chew and the chicken they add is seasoned well.
