I used to love their pizzas! Did they recently change ownership? I ordered veggie pizzas last night. First time ever, the delivery didn't show up at designated time; I called Red Tomato Pizza 20 minutes after ETA and was told " He's on his way". He was half hour late and made no apologies. The veggie pizzas were nothing like what they had on the past Halloweens. This is the third time I am going to this restaurant. The food is simply excellent. I have had the pizza several times and everyone in my family loves the pizza. We got the pasta with chicken and an Italian sub today. It was delicious. I highly recommend this restaurant if you are looking for an authentic Italian food at a reasonable price that everyone in the family would ask to go back over and over again. The service was excellent and the staff were friendly. The food arrived on time and as ordered. The atmosphere is friendly and parking is easy. Tried the pizza here when it first opened and was not completely taken with the experience. I have not tried it since. However, went by the other day for dinner with my father and we had a couple of pasta dishes. OMG, these are huge bowls, lots of meat, tasty garlic bread, and a very fresh tasting and nice salad that came with the combo meal. All that for I think $11.99 per combo meal! They even have a daily special, which usually comes in a dollar or so cheaper. Great value for money, I would come back for the pasta, and perhaps give that pizza a second chance. read more

3.5 stars. Really torn between "Yah! I'm a fan" and "A-OK". The Margarita Gourmet Pizza was somewhat of a let down. I usually think fresh beautiful bold colors...green, white, and red of the Italian flag. What the pizza actually looked like was really not so appetizing. The pizza could have really used more of a basil kick, but otherwise not a bad tasting pizza. Another point of confusion is that we've been here a few times already and even though we've ordered the same thing, we've not gotten a salad the first time, the second time we got a small salad, and the third time we got a large salad. I guess in the end it evens out, but would be nice to know why the inconsistency. The star of the show in my opinion were the calzones / stomboli. The Meat Classic was definitely loaded with meat and probably lodged in my heart somewhere. But MMMM-MMMmmm. That was good. HEAVY and FILLING but don't eat it all in one sitting. Quick, accurate delivery, but the food misses in a few key spots. The pizza dough tastes like cardboard. I'm not sure if they make it there or get it shipped in frozen. It definitely tastes like a pre-made frozen dough. It hasn't been worked enough to develop the right consistency and it has absolutely no taste whatsoever. None. Just a bit of salt would go a long way! Other than that, the cheese is good and the sauce tastes fine. Make sure to get some flavorful toppings or else you'll be disappointed. The wings also taste like they've been shipped in frozen. They're fried, which is a huge plus for delivery wings, but they're also breaded which is a love/hate thing for people. If you like breaded wings, you'll like these. If not, at least you'll appreciate the fried crispiness. It's a fine place for delivery or a quick bite. Nice little neighborhood joint that will fill you up with plenty of leftovers to spare. I would suggest coming here for lunch and taking the leftovers for dinner--I'm no sissy eater, and if you can finish a whole meal in one sitting, you're a much more ambitous person than I am. Combo meal comes with a salad and garlic bread. The salad was pretty standard but a good size, and let's face it, a salad before a large Italian meal always makes you feel a little less guilty. The garlic bread could have used a little more garlic so don't be shy with the garlic powder on the table. When you order a pizza, you know what size you're getting. My eyes widened, however, when I saw my order of gnocchi with meat sauce approaching me in what looked like a large boat. The meat sauce was fairly standard but pleasant, and the gnocchi may have been just a tad overdone, and didn't put up any resistance to my bite. The opinion on the Italian sausage platter (which also comes in a big boat with a massive portion of pasta) was that it was good, but not spicy enough. The winner was the Roma pizza--the crust was thin, and the fresh mozzerella was the winning ingredient--I think it was the only pizza on the menu that I saw using fresh mozzerella. It's an "Americanized" Italian place, but I don't think it's putting up any pretense of being an authentic Neapolitan or Sicilian pizzeria or anything like that. We ordered the cheesesteak and pasta with red clam sauce. The pasta comes with the biggest salad ever but just doesn't taste that great. I also ordered the pasta with red clam sauce and got white. I didn't say anything, I just went with it because I was so hungry. The sauce was bland and watery with a overwhelming amount of pasta, much too large for one person, even two people and a small amount of diced up clams that seemed like they came out of a can honestly. I would rather have a smaller pasta dish that tastes delicious than a mountain of pasta with a mediocre sauce. It also came with 4 mussels which is odd because it's a clam dish so I didn't really understand that and I didn't eat any of them. I ate about 10% of the dish and left. The cheesesteak was really bland, added salt and pepper, still not good. We paid $25 for both dishes and although the portions were very large, I didn't leave feeling like I got my money's worth. The reviews here are mostly about the pizza so I'll give this place another try and get the pizza but I was very disappointed with my first experience. read more

I order from here a number of times. The pizza is very good, nice think tasty crust, fresh ingredients including more gourmet options and the best sausage around. My rating has to do with their tomato sauce. It's filled with unpalatable tomato skins. When I get my pizza, I always have to go through each slice and pull the skins out. Some people may like tomato skins in their pizza or marinara, and that's fine, but in this particular case, the skins aren't easy to chew and get stick in one's mouth and teeth. It's really rather gross. It's sort of disappointing really, cause otherwise it would be 5 star pizza. I wish they would do something about this. If this was addressed and changed, I would order weekly from them instead of once in a blue moon. read more

NOTE: review is on delivery only; I imagine that our concerns (e.g., soggy food) would have been addressed each time if we were dining in, but don't know for sure. We have ordered here many times-- about 60% of the time the food is solid (my husband particularly loves the veggie calzone), but the other 40% of the time it is virtually inedible. Tonight, the calzone was soggy, and the inside wasn't cooked. The veggie pasta had a few veggies passed over it, and had very little sauce. I came down to McLean on an overnight business trip and had the bad fortune of looking up Red Tomato Pizzeria on Yelp and ordering a pizza and some onion rings. An hour and a half after I ordered my stuff still hadn't shown up. I called up Red Tomato Pizzeria and the parade of lies began. 1) Your order has already been delivered -- That was a lie 2) Your order never showed up from Eat24 -- That was a lie, especially since I'm sitting here looking at the receipt. There was no talk about refunding my money. There was also no talk about getting me my food. This place is an example of the very worst Yelp has to offer. If you're here on business you'd better think twice before doing business with these people. Maybe I should just count myself as lucky that my food never showed up. Bonus suckage: The phone went dead multiple times when calling. Maybe they hung up, maybe their phone system sucks, maybe phones are too complicated for them. Decent little place that's a file run alternative to big chain pizza choices. The place appears to be a family run business which has its appeal as you'll always be greeted by the same familiar faces whenever you stop by. They have a limited selection of bottles beer (Yuengling or Bud) as well as some wine. The menu selection is much more than just pizza. They have hot and cold sandwiches (steak n cheese, cold hoagies, calzones, etc). We once saw a lady picking up a ton of food which makes me wonder if these guys cater. Anyway, the food is decent, and the price is just right...especially when the monkeys are crowing for some 'Za! A small pie is perfect for two four year olds and we usually steal the half-moon booth to the left of the register. While on a business trip to McLean, VA, I found this place on GrubHub and decided to give it a shot. I ordered pasta with steamed vegetables. First of all, the vegetables were overcooked, and I'm pretty sure they used frozen mixed vegetables, while there's nothing wrong with that per se, it did not taste good. I've eaten here twice in the past week. I know it's a questionable choice on my part, but I am happy to have found something that has quick service, reasonable prices ($3.5 for a gigantic piece), and cheesy pizza. Both times I've come in for a quick slice, they offered the freshest pizza from the oven, disregarding the "cold" slices ready for eating. I appreciate this effort, so thank you. I would love them to have a veggie option sliced, but they only provide sausage, pepperoni, or (my choice by default), cheese. There is an ample amount of cheese on the pizza, they offer to sprinkle with Parmesan and have oregano and red pepper flakes available too. The Corona bottles on the tables hold their salt and pepper, a cute touch but also an easy way of advertising the beer menu. I can't say this is the best tasting pizza in my life (been to Napoli, sorry), but it does indeed "hit the spot" if you want something quick and easy. The service is relaxed, they have TVs in there if you've got to wait, and it seems many seats are filled at the oddest of times (at 3pm when I'm desperately trying to compensate for skipping lunch). I pre-tipped over 20% (something I recommend not doing) I placed my order at 8:20pm and it's now 9:45pm. they are 2.3 miles away from my apartment. I was underwhelmed by my first Red Tomato experience. When I order a pizza, I expect it to have a good amount of cheese. I need at least 1/2 inch layer, I don't care how many other toppings are on it, and I want the cheese to pull away in long strings when biting into a slice. I ordered a Roma and while the toppings were tasty, there was barely any cheese on it. This would be catastrophic for a regular Roma pizza, but even worse considering... I ordered extra cheese. And extra sauce. And paid $4 extra for it. I at least expected blobs of fresh mozzarella. Instead they were paper-thin splaterings - exactly like what a popped bubble gum bubble would look like if it flattened out on its side. It was like fresh mozzarella film. The dough (I got hand-tossed) was unremarkable - it could have been the same pizza dough on any standard pizza you'd get from anywhere. Pizza without ample cheese is like.... like.... Red Tomato is one of the newer additions to the McLean pizza scene that is already overloaded with (not very good) options. It definitely ranks in the top 3 out of 9 or so places that we have in McLean. To get to the point, I really only come here for pizza, not much of the other stuff is really worth your time or money. The pizza has a pretty nice crust: it has enough crispiness to it and a good amount of pull as well. So as to not mess with my favorite part of their pizza, the crust, I enforce upon myself a two-topping maximum rule when I come here. Generally I either end up with just a plain cheese pizza or pepperoni and black olive, nothing too extravagant ever. When I adhere to my own rules I really enjoy Red Tomato, but I've had some rather lacklustre experiences with some of their additional options. They have the same general menu as most pizza places in terms of extras: various iceberg salads, chicken/pasta dishes, mozzarella sticks, and panini, which would be fine, but there's really nothing much special or particularly well done about any of them. One little extra positive about the place is that they are probably the only place in town that actually sells pizza by the slice. Parking is fairly plentiful and service is very good. Overall, would give the place 3.5 stars if I could, but... stick to the pizza here. read more

Once again, I wish I had read the Yelp reviews before ordering. What do all the 20 previous reviews say? "Don't order the salad!" What do I do? I order the Antipasta salad. As a previous reviewer observed, the salad is mostly iceberg with pinwheels of mild cheese and meats served a la those Costco pinwheels that were a popular party appetizers a decade ago. Completely missing were the promised slices of red tomatoes. Almost absent was the promised fresh mozzarella that was to "top" the salad. I found a small slice buried in the iceberg lettuce. Two kalamata olives at most. Bland airplane food. Seriously (I know you're laughing), it tasted like a tiny airplane salad. So did the greek dressing, come to think of it. But my more intelligent son ordered a cheese pizza that he was very happy with. I took a bite and liked the crust. Daughter ordered Penne with tomato sauce and thought it bland, could not finish it and put it in the refrigerator. All agreed the garlic bread was bland too. I think the french fries might have had a fighting chance had we not had the food delivered to our home. By then,. there were lifeless. So, now, having read the reviews, we'll go back and try one of the "gourmet" pizzas or Calzones and Stromboli. But do what all the other Yelpers have posted and stay away from everything else.
