We came here looking to try something new, and I expected a gastropub. I was surprised to find this hidden gem instead. It's a whiskey-focused cocktail bar with a tasty, Southern-inspired menu. The space is very Instagrammable, especially with the oak tree behind the bar. The whole place feels stylish and cozy, with a clear design theme. It's upscale but still casual, which was great since I was underdressed and no one minded. Our server Hayden was outstanding--friendly, knowledgeable, and welcoming. The concept of the place seems to be centered around a Whiskey bar with shareable plates. The cocktails tend towards new classics and classically inspired whiskey cocktails, all very tasty, well made, and well balanced. They've joined the trend of clipping things to the side of your glass like a little plane for a Paper Plane cocktail, but I won't hold it against them. The food is very delicious. We had the bacon-wrapped dates, which shouldn't be missed, a salad with shrimp, and a hamburger. My only nit is that some of the dishes are more shareable than others, so it would be good if the menu reflected that. I expected slider or pre-sectioned burgers, since everything else was shareable, but again, a minor nit to an otherwise excellent experience. Another nit is I know they are trying to promote the restaurant next door (Lalo's), but I just wasn't in the mood for the tour the first time I turned them down. We made reservations for a party of four, but were seated at a half circle table by the patio entrance that really wasn't suited for four people. It would have been much better for a party of two. Our hostess was very sweet and welcoming. Unfortunately, our server seemed rushed and uninterested. When I asked if they had any spicy cocktails, his response was, "I'm not a bartender." The cocktails themselves were very good. The menu is limited, which is fine if the food is exceptional, but that wasn't our experience. The lobster mac and cheese needed more seasoning and lobster. The wrong appetizer was brought to our table (candied bacon instead of fig wrapped bacon but the server did not correct his error), and the fried deviled eggs were not good. My husband's Sloppy Joes were bland, and the buns were mostly air. I ordered the apple cranberry salad, but it was almost entirely kale, which I was not aware oThe dressing also tasted off, and I couldn't finish it. The service felt rushed. Our check was brought out just minutes after our food arrived. We later decided to order another round of drinks, but had to open a second tab because the first had already been closed. Our server seemed irritated by the request. The most disappointing part was that we chose this restaurant to celebrate our friends before they moved away, and it wasn't the experience we had hoped for. The positives were the beautiful atmosphere, cute interior, friendly hostess, and great cocktails. We tried Social Oak in Eagle on a Friday night for a night out. It's right next to Crave, which is always busy, so parking can be a bit of a challenge. We went early, before sunset, and I'll say this, the vibe feels very different in daylight. From the photos, it clearly transforms into something much more elegant at night. During the day it's more low-key, almost understated, which made some of the pricing feel a little harder to square in that moment. Yet they do have less expensive options. Service was excellent. Our server was fantastic, turns out she came from Coyne, one of our favorite spots in Eagle, and she did a great job walking us through the menu and the "Southern-inspired" concept. That said, the menu itself was a little confusing. It was described in a way that sounded like shareables, but then also like full entrees. I found myself unsure how to approach ordering, especially with the dry-aged steaks displayed up front. They look impressive, but I wasn't totally clear on how you actually order one. Food-wise, everything we had was very good. The jumbo tiger prawns to start were excellent. I had the Nashville hot chicken salad, really solid, and my wife had the eggplant tacos, which she enjoyed. Drinks were a highlight: the Prohibition Old Fashioned was great and came with a nice tableside presentation, and my wife loved the Outer Banks cocktail. One odd note: they have an extensive bourbon/whiskey selection (around 50), but only one vodka... Tito's. Not my favorite, so that felt like a miss for me. Seems like an easy fix to round that out a bit with a couple more options. We finished with churros, which were outstanding. The crowd skewed pretty young, seemed mostly 30-somethings. We and one other Gen X couple stood out a bit. It's definitely a trendy spot, and everything feels very intentional, which I appreciated. I'm just not entirely sure how the menu concept lands long-term. Overall, I'd recommend it, worth trying for sure. If I went again, I'd probably lean toward going after dark when the atmosphere matches the price point a bit more. read more

I was really impressed with my visit to Social Oak. The space is smaller than it looks in photos, but it's super well designed and still feels comfortable. We shared the fried deviled eggs, a burger, and a salad, and honestly I'd recommend all of them and would order them again. There weren't any vodka drinks on the cocktail menu, but our server suggested a great alternative that ended up being really good. Only thing to note is it's not really a place to hang out for a long time. I discovered Social Oak through Instagram and was really excited to try it out. I made a reservation for the day after their soft opening and ran into a few issues while booking, eventually landing on the first available evening slot at 9:45 PM. I arrived on time and was promptly greeted and seated, which I appreciated. The atmosphere was beautiful, and you can tell a lot of thought went into the concept of the restaurant and bar. That said, I felt a bit underwhelmed by the menu overall and found the prices slightly high for the offerings. I ordered two mixed drinks -- they were tasty, but nothing particularly memorable. I also ordered the crack chix sandwich, which was absolutely delicious and the highlight of my visit. It came out about 10 minutes after ordering, which was perfect since I was starving, and I would definitely order it again. As I was finishing up, I did feel a bit rushed, as it seemed like the staff was trying to close up and I may have been in the way, which took away slightly from the experience. That said, I understand they're newly opened, and I'm willing to give them another chance. Never paid more than $25. Never seen whiskey prices like this. So funny! I have 350 bottles at my house. I hate seeing people gouge people on whiskey. Our server was AMAZING! I wish I would have gotten his name. He was younger with dark hair and dark eyes. He was extremely knowledgeable about the drinks and very accommodating with a few changes I wanted for my drink. He gave excellent recommendations after asking good questions. The booths were very cozy. The burger and Junebug were great. I did deduct one star because we ordered the Outer Banks which was supposed to come with citrus foam, which we were excited about. The drink came out without the couple inches of citrus foam (the drinks are small so if the details matter ) We were told the machine to create the foam was broken, but still charged full price for the drink when citrus was a main part of the drink. Genuinely did not think the menu was that extensive. I have a gluten allergy and there truly is not any gluten friendly meals. The drinks we had were not great and their patio is not shaded. I was surprised at how good the food is in this bar. They had a couple things on the menu that just are not standard bar fair but really delicious and we really enjoyed it. The atmosphere clean and new. It's well appointed with booths as well as a bar. You can sit at. They have a lot of what I would call fancy whiskey. But they did not have gentlemen Jack. Which is my favorite. And I was there with two other guys and I didn't hear what they were ordering, but they didn't have their standard order or their standard whiskeys. For each of us they have a whiskey they recommend recommended. But looking at the shelf with a whiskey, it seemed to be. There are many whiskeys that I see all over that I didn't see here. The bartender did a good job when he asked him about the whiskeys he told us that the owner wanted to have a lot of "fine whiskeys" rather than popular whiskeys. Over the last 40 yrs, I have had the opportunity to dine in over 200 fine dining establishments from the east coast to the west coast and in all those meals I have NEVER had a worse dining experience than the one I had recently at Social Oak. I generally don't do extensive reviews but am giving one here so as to hopefully save someone else from a similar experience. Atmosphere: Decent décor. A little loud and despite the small size, was not full on a Friday night at prime time. Now, I know why. Bar: Appears to be a meeting place for desperate boomers meeting their online dating app connections. Very limited wine and beer list. Don't know how you can call yourself a bar when you only have 3 beers available. Ordered a $200 bottle of wine which was clearly not maintained in a climate controlled refrigerator as it had to be around 85 deg in temp and was ruined. They're likely storing them in a case in a back room somewhere. More on the wine later. Menu: Very limited options. Plenty of appetizers but that's about it. Maybe some are good. Didn't try them. Here's where it gets really bad. They claim to be a prime steakhouse. I've eaten at some of the finest steakhouses in the country and this one doesn't even come close. They had 2 steak options on the menu. The first was a Prime "tomahawk" ribeye. Their "Market price" was $85/lb and the smallest steak they have is 3 lbs(1 lb of which is likely bone.) That equates to over $250 for a steak!! Sorry but no steak is worth $250 and I've never paid anything close to that at some of the finest steakhouses in the country. Needless to say, I did not order it so I can't say how well it was cooked. The second steak offering was a Wagyu strip steak at $20/oz. Since there really aren't any other true entree offerings(other than salad or mac & cheese), I chose this option. Ordered 6 oz size. Fully 1/3 of that 6 oz was fat cap. Not marbling, mind you, but 2 inches of sliced FAT with no muscle fiber meat in it whatsoever. My dog loved it but I basically paid $120 for 4 oz of wagyu which was AVERAGE at best. None of the items offered come with sides. They are all a la carte and there ARE NO SIDES ON THE MENU. Explain that one to me. Wife and I split a salad so we would have something else to eat besides meat which was again average at best. Service: First time in my life that I haven't left a tip. Both waiter and manager were cocky and rude. Example: When I said there was 2" of fat cap on the wagyu steak, the waiter responded with "that's called marbling, sir." Uh, no it's not, punk. Finally, when it was time to end our terrible meal and experience, I asked for the cork so that we could take the remainder of our unfinished bottle of wine home. They explained that their liquor license doesn't allow that. AYFKM!!??? I have NEVER eaten at a restaurant that didn't allow us to take the wine we didn't consume home, nor is there a liquor license that doesn't allow this. This is purely THEIR POLICY which is likely directed by some clueless attorney. Instead, they were essentially encouraging irresponsible drinking and driving by not allowing customers to take home the balance of the expensive bottle of wine purchased. To be clear, Idaho law does NOT prevent this as long as it is corked and stored in the trunk or behind the back seat. Finally, when the bill came, they tack on a 3% "Merchant Fee" to the entire bill. I have no idea what this is. I assume it is a fee for the CC use(like most people would ever pay cash for a $500 meal.) I have NEVER eaten at a restaurant that tacked this on and even other retail establishments who do always have signs making you aware of it when entering or paying. You couldn't pay me to return to this place and judging by the comments I've gotten from others since that night, I doubt any of them will either. If I could give it ZERO stars, I would. I give them 1-2 yrs before they're out of business. Added after false response by business owner: Perhaps you should question your dishonest employees who no doubt lied to your face about the interaction. YOU WEREN'T THERE. So, don't take their dishonest word for it. I did not "curse out" anyone. read more
